looked like he actually meant it, too, rather than a fluke. Or at least get it into the box for the strikers to latch on to - either way, great goal!

So Dave King is stepping down from Rangers. I had a feeling he would, and for a few reasons as well as the mentioned ones.
Still he has my gratitude for rescuing my club, and putting it back on map with courage and some dignity.
Although sometimes not enough. Without him we would not be playing and Scottish football would have imploded under the weight of only one club.
It might still but thanks anyway.

Good luck tonight, chaps, against Feyenoord - get it right up, Dicky Boy! I'm sure that Defoe will do, if he gets a game...;)

Defoe is injured. So down to that nobody, whats his name..[emoji3]

Think it might be a struggle over there, but a draw would do most likely, as i fancy young boys to win ..

Are they at home against Porto. or away?

Fredo then, will fire it right up them! I think you'll win 2-1:)

Judging by the ticatape it's not going well. 1 down and could be more.
Funny but we do usually play badly last 2/3 games of group.

They will need to shake themselves.

Marco
28-11-2019, 18:54
I've been watching the game.... Feyenoord seem more up for it and are playing at a much higher tempo than Rangers. Morelos has had hardly any service. Both will need to change in the second half if Rangers are to get anything from the game.

The next goal will be crucial. I still think Rangers can get back into it. I'd really like to see both of us playing European football after Xmas.

Marco.

Marco

Marco
28-11-2019, 19:28
Yeah, him and Helander were caught upfield. Helander slipped in the box at a crucial moment though, when tracking back to defend the Rangers goal, and the Feyenoord boy dinked it into the net. Nice finish.

It's not over yet, though!

Marco.

struth
28-11-2019, 19:47
2-2 then.. Porto came back and won damn them.
So we are top by a point

Marco
28-11-2019, 19:50
Finishes 2-2.... Over the 90s mins that's probably a fair result, as Feyenoord dominated the first half and Rangers were the better team in the 2nd. However, Rangers were denied a STONEWALL penalty in the second half, with a Feyenoord player (I forget who it was) climbing all over Morelos. No idea how it wasn't given!

With Porto beating YB 1-2, it looks like it'll go down to the last game, with Rangers needing a point to qualify.

3 up now. Good. Scots teams have done better than any country this year.
Must be climbing the table again

Marco
28-11-2019, 22:20
Yeah, our results will defo have helped the co-efficient!:)

But yes, a superb 3-1 win against Rennes, who it has to be said made 8 changes to their usual starting 11, as they were already out of the competition, so not much to play for other than pride. Celtic completely outclassed them though, even with resting Edouard, so minus a recognised striker, and without really getting out of 3rd gear.

Ntcham was superb throughout, and really showed his class with a magnificent range of passing and movement, ditto Ryan Christie, who once again scored a great goal. He's really turning into a top, top player now. Playing Lewis Morgan (a winger) in an unfamiliar role as a striker was an interesting decision from Lennon, but it paid off, as he scored the opening goal, which was a cracker - and with a little more luck could've had more.

Fraser Forster was once again magnificent, and made another couple of world-class saves. If he keeps up this form, he'll soon be wearing an England shirt! Mikey Johnston came on in the second half and scored a wonder goal. He's just back from injury, but looked like he'd never been away. A truly special talent, in a team brimful of talent and attacking menace. A nice selection 'headache' for our manager to have!

Anyway, we're top and have WON our group with a game to spare, and are now SEEDED for the draw of the round of 32, which should make for a more favourable tie, including having achieved a POINTS RECORD in European group stages, for a Celtic team, which has never been done before by *any* other Celtic manager!!!:yay::yay:

I wonder if those who last season said that Lennon was a 'downgrade' from Rodgers, as Celtic manager, would still be daft enough to hold that (ill-informed) opinion?;)

What did Rodgers achieve in Europe with Celtic...??

A memorable (and also historical) night for Celtic, and with Rangers also doing well, and being a whisker away from qualification themselves, also a great night for Scottish football!

Another good performance by Celtic in Europe, looked well in control and rested a few players.

Good results today for both sets of the 'old firm'... Celtic won 1-4 at Ross County, and Hearts laid down again to Rangers;);) losing 5-0 at Ibrox!

Hopefully that'll signal the end of his job for that balloon, who thinks he's good enough to be a Hearts manager... Budge needs to stop farting about, get her mits in her purse, and hire a top-notch manager who can make Hearts properly compete for 3rd place!

Anyway, it's 'as you were' at the top of the SPL, albeit with Celtic's GD lead now cut to just one... The midweek games coming up could be interesting. Will the real Aberdeen 'turn up' at Pittodrie, and if Celtic are to beat Hamilton at home, how many goals can they expect to score without fielding a recognised striker in their starting 11?:hmm:

Oh, and good to see Liverpool stretching their lead at the top of the EPL to 11 points! Sorry, Chris...

Yes, good results for the Scottish top two and Liverpool.

Don't suppose I should complain about a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, but thought we would win it today. Onto the next one - Southampton on Wednesday, and a real 6 pointer, if you can have such a thing at this stage of the season. PL games this week are on Amazon Prime Video, so hoping to watch that one live (they're also also showing Boxing day games I believe) which is great as I cancelled my Sky Sports subscription so only get to see highlights on MOTD.

I just feel guilty celebrating a Liverpool win when I know it's at the expense of the team you support. I can be less considerate in future, if you like?;)

I also note that Iheanacho scored a 94th minute winner for Leicester, at home against Everton, and so they're now clear in second spot by three points. What BR's doing there deserves to be recognised and given due praise.. Hey, you never know, they could yet be dark horses!

Wonder what odds you'd get now from the bookies on another title success for Leicester?:hmm: Could be worth sticking £20 on!

Absolutely, but I have good reasons for my prediction, which I'll reveal later. *BUT*, much will depend on what happens midweek, and thus who goes into the cup final with the greatest desire to win, plus also the fitness of Edouard, and whether he plays. All will have a bearing on matters.

I have been repeatedly flummoxed with the lack of cutting edge, and the lack of clinical finishing that has epitomised City performances this season.
Couple that with Guardiola's reticence in changing things around at the 60 minute mark, and it makes it all the more difficult for players coming on as subs.
David Silva and Riyad Mahrez were subbed off at around 75 minutes, and the subs, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden had an enormous impact.
Had they been given another 15 minutes they might have had a hand in or scored goals themselves.

As a City supporter it's frustrating!
I am always mindful of the injury issues we have, and the teams we put out are all too often close, but no cigar.

Newcastle were a tough team to break down, and their 2 goals were superb, so all power to their elbows.

The only thing that goes in City's favour is that Liverpool won't know whether they're coming or going with all the toing and froing to Qatar and back.
Jet lag is going to hit Liverpool if nothing else does.
City have a flight out to Zagreb, but they'll be running permanently on UK time, despite the early kickoff.

Yup, remember what happened last season when you were in a similar position at this time of the year....?;)

Don't think that will happen this time, though!!

One area of concern for me, however, if I were a Rangers fan, is where are all the goals going to come from if Morelos gets injured and is out for a number of games?

I know that Kent's chipping in with a few now, and Defoe, when he plays will also contribute, but the significant difference between Rangers and Celtic is that we've got goals virtually throughout the whole team, and can still score four away from home in the league, and in Europe comfortably beat a team like Rennes, without a recognised striker...

And for me, that's why what happens in the January transfer window with both teams will be very significant, in terms of who goes on to win the league.

I think you make some valid points. Sometimes I get similarly frustrated with Neil Lennon, in terms of why he's waiting until the 71st minute of games to bring on our currently only (supposedly fit) striker, and playing a winger in his place up until that point, when instead said striker (Leigh Griffiths) could be building up his match sharpness/fitness properly (as he's been out for a long time) by playing from the start...?

Our manager has got away with that decision so far, but I doubt it will continue. Returning to City, I'm sure things will change when you get all of your 'big guns' back. You'll just have to hope that Liverpool haven't ran away with the league by then...

However, and for me this is the thing: I'm a great believer that in football success comes in cycles, and right now all the signs are there that this will be Liverpool's year, and thus an end to their title-winning drought. Balances of power in football eventually (and historically) tend to shift, and that could also be the case soon up in Scotland. Celtic can't go on winning everything forever - and indeed have no divine right to either.

That may change in the EPL though, should City pull off a remarkable comeback in the league.

But my gut says no, simply because I believe that this is Liverpool's year, and are now entering their cycle for success, just as lately it has been City's. Therefore, if Liverpool win the title this year, I believe it will be followed by a few more, *as long* as they can hold onto Klopp! He's the catalyst behind Liverpool's recent success - and the reason he's been successful is because he's been given time to do his job, which sadly is a luxury rarely afforded to other managers of the top teams in the EPL.

However, if Klopp wins the title this year with Liverpool, and given that he's already won the CL with them, he may feel that it's 'job done', and want to bail out while he's at the top, *if* the likes of Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern or PSG were to come calling for his signature in the summer. I suspect if that doesn't happen though, he'll be at the helm again next season, and almost certainly so if Liverpool don't win the league.

My point is that, right now, I don't think Rangers have enough strength in depth or, Morelos aside, goals throughout their team to win the title - unless they make good use of the January transfer window (and better than we do), *but* in one-off cup games, such as the final next Sunday, are easily good enough to beat Celtic.

Personally I'm not overly bothered but I know most fans are.
Tbh I'm more looking forward to the future. With the decent squad we have, plus we will build on it, but our youth at moment are winning all the time and by big margins, or beating mens teams.

Watched the Rangers game, and while they dominated the first 40 mins and should've been 3-4 up, when Aberdeen scored a lucky goal out of nowhere just before half-time, Rangers lost their way in the second half, and when Aberdeen equalised with a well-worked goal, they became very nervy.

Whilst Rangers should've had a penalty, when Morelos was tripped just on the line, Cosgrove missed an absolute sitter to make it 3-2 to Aberdeen, and despite Rangers huffing and puffing dominating possession, they couldn't find a winner.

I haven't watched the Celtic game yet, but it sounds like they were a bit below par, which is what you run the risk of when you make so many changes and play again without a recognised striker. The Celtic team tonight was definitely chosen with one eye towards the final on Sunday.... *But* what a way to win with a last gasp goal (once again) from Broony!!

You wonder how crucial those 3 points will be come the end of the season...?

Anyway, I'm off now to watch the game and will comment more later, including how I think tonight's results may influence the cup final on Sunday.

I agree about the lack of pace, which could be a problem against us, with the pace we have throughout the team, so do you think Gerrard will change it for the two you say on Sunday, given that Barisic looks doubtful, or stick with the same pairing he had last night?

I was out last so only seen the goals, my son watched the game and according to him we went from dominating to pish...

That's a pretty succinct summary! But for the first 40 mins Rangers were superb and blew Aberdeen away.

I thought you were going to go on and pump them like we did (4-0 going on 14-0), but for some reason (no idea why) when Aberdeen scored, especially the equaliser, your team just panicked/fell to pieces and became rather nervous, then spent the rest of the match fruitlessly chasing a winner.

You were denied a stonewall penalty, though, but got off the hook with Cosgrove's near open-goal miss, which I think would've won it for Aberdeen. Anyway, onto Sunday now, and my thoughts/predictions on that one later!

They've been all over City, and it could've easily been more. Utd are clearly more up for it so far, and you have to ask yourself why...?

For me, City will have to make a big comeback and win this match [it's a *must*], if they've got any hope whatsoever of winning the title this season, as Liverpool would NOT throw away a 14-point lead, or for that matter a 12-point one, should City come back to draw...:nono:

Marco.

struth
07-12-2019, 19:03

Can't say I'm unhappy although surprised.
Stats are all city bar shots on target.

Marco
07-12-2019, 19:45
Well, there you go.... I know there are loads of games still left to play, but for me, unless a significant percentage of Liverpool's key players suffer leg breaks, or the team receives another blow close to the seriousness of that, the title race (between them and City) is over. Who knows, Leicester may yet mount more of a challenge? I'll be looking out for their result against Villa tomorrow!

But yes, Utd blew a rather lacklustre looking City away in the first 30 mins, then lost their way/couldn't keep up their high-tempo/were pushed back by City, once they woke up [delete as appropriate, in terms of how you saw it] and spent most of the reminder of the match defending their lead. City deserved their late goal, based on largely their second-half dominance, but never really looked like equalising, let alone coming back to win.

That's the first time I've watched Man City this season, over a full 90 mins, and to me they currently look like a team who know they've blown the title and can't catch Liverpool, as the type of real urgency, grit and never-say-die attitude Liverpool have shown this season in games they're struggled to win, but someone found a way to do so, simply wasn't there from City. They certainly have their injury problems, and that's undoubtedly having an impact, but unless Pep can get their 'heads right' and focussed on the job in hand, particularly when his big guns come back, it wouldn't surprise me if Leicester [barring any injury to Vardy] finished ahead of them this season.

Are United now 'back'? Well, we'll see, but based on their recent results, especially tonight and midweek against Spurs, you could make a good case for it. In big derbies like this, it's almost always the team who 'want it' more who win, and tonight that was definitely Utd. For me though, regardless if they're 'back' or not yet, the Utd board have to show as much patience with Solskjær, as Liverpool have with Klopp (in terms of the league), as in time doing so could pay similar dividends!

Marco.

City defence seems as frail as ever when pushed.
Utd are still a long way off where the players they have should be Imo. Is the manager the right man.. Im not sure.
Giggs would maybe be better.
Chelsea seem to have skidded off the Rd as they are cleared to buy, and i think the 2 may be connected. Spurs won well today and Jose will get an initial improvement from good teams but he has flaws that usually cause team friction. Not sure he will last his contract.
If Arsenal get right man they can do top 4

So, onto today's League Cup Final at Hampden between Rangers and Celtic.

Here's what my gut tells me is FACT:

Gerrard will win trophies at Rangers - there is no doubt in my mind about that - and Celtic will eventually lose a cup final.

However, will it be today?:hmm:

Last week I would've said yes, based on my belief that in old firm derbies, especially cup finals, the team who *needs* to win it more, and wants it more, usually does - and in terms of the former, that's Rangers, coupled with the fact that it would be Gerrard's first trophy as Rangers manager - and so he will have his players massively fired up to win.

Plus, least week there was a doubt whether or not Edouard, a crucial player for Celtic, especially in cup finals where he invariably has a big say in matters, would be fit. It now seems pretty certain that he will play.

So my thoughts right now? I've changed my mind who I think will win, not just because of Edouard likely playing, but because I detect an equally insatiable/steely desire for Lennon to want to be the manager who wins Celtic 10 trophies in a row - something I hadn't really considered before, and with Celtic already having a winning mentality in finals, that could tip things in their favour.

However, it will NOT be like many Celtic fans seem to think, and be a stroll in the park. Bullshit to that! *If* Celtic win, they will have had to fight for it, and it may even be after extra time.

Anyway, if not, and it's to be Rangers day instead, then good luck to them, as they will have earned it, and it would only make us even more determined to win the league, One thing's for sure though, Rangers being better now than they have been for a long time, and pushing us in every game, has made US better both at home and in Europe, so that challenge can only be a good thing - and long may it continue!

In any case, let's hope it's a good match to watch and may the best team win:cool:

Marco.Wasn't looking at it from the bigoted anti rangers perspective but as investors will see it.
A league where only one team wins things is a lot worse than a league where 2 sides wins things.
Yes it would be better if more could, but realistically we've been here for years and it's not happened bar the occasional cup.
Look how the invincible City are struggling down south. A Team like Leicester won it not that long ago and are second. Liverpool are a mile ahead.
These changes produce interest from outwith the goldfish bowl of local fan interest who let's face it can't even agree with themselves, well bar one thing [emoji3]

James turned Angelino inside out repeatedly.

I broadly agree, but in terms of the bit in bold, it was exactly the same when Rangers were winning nine in a row, and had it largely all their way throughout most of the 90s:)

I meant it though, when I said that Rangers being much better now, especially this season, has helped Celtic, and in turn improved the co-efficient of Scottish football. No way would we have won our Europa League group, or as many games as we have done in Europe this season, had it not been for wanting to ensure that we went one better than you - and vice versa with Rangers and us, especially in the SPL.

I don't believe we'd have won that game midweek against Hamilton, for example, and now gone 11 wins in a row [and two points clear], were it not for wanting to stay at the top ahead of Rangers, and you pushing us as hard as you have been - and for me *that* is the way it should be every year...!

That way, both of our teams will prosper, as it pushes us to perform at the highest level in EVERY game, thus in turn making us better equipped to play against a superior standard of opposition in Europe.

I'd much prefer that, and take it any day, instead of it being an almost foregone conclusion that all the silverware will end up at Parkhead... Roll on 'helicopter flag-days' too, as the sheer excitement of winning one of those far exceeds winning titles every year by 10, 20 or 30 points!

Yeah, I'm disappointed for you, Chris, as that must've been a hard one to take, especially at home. However, from a Liverpool perspective, I'm pleased with the result. It's very hard trying to win every game, especially with a weakened side, with the standard of the opposition you have to face week in, week out...

The consistency you achieved last season, in that respect, was quite remarkable, but I guess the fact is that if Liverpool can go onto emulate the consistency that they achieved last year, which wasn't quite good enough to win the title, this year it will be, and certainly so if they better it.

If you dominate the game, have several excellent chances including a penalty but can’t score even against 10 men. Give away a sloppy goal although it was off side.
The game should have been won by half time, still a long way too go for Rangers. Great performance by the Celtic goalkeeper but at the end of the day the statistic that counts is goals scored.
Not sure where we go from here.

Thing is though, Celtic played much better with 10 men than they did with 11! But most importantly for Celtic, the game changed when Edouard came on, as he won the free kick that Jullien scored from, plus set up Mikey Johnston with a wonderful pass, who should've made it 2-0. So for all Rangers' dominance, they could've easily lost the game by that margin.

No doubt whatsoever that Rangers were by far the better team in the first half, and also in the second, up until Edouard came on, and were also more up for it from the beginning than Celtic were. However, the fact is Rangers played as well as they did before Edouard came on, because Celtic had no 'out ball' or someone to hit up front, so that stifled us/made us lack confidence, combined with Rangers' hard-pressing tactics.

You also have to remember that we were playing not only with a makeshift 'striker', but also a makeshift left back, although I thought that Jonny Hayes was superb throughout, and Elyounoussi was far from match fit, so this was a considerably weakened Celtic team, which was a major reason why Rangers dominated so much for the first 60 mins. If Edouard had been fit enough to play from the start, I guarantee that it would've been a different game.

And if I'd known that Edouard wouldn't have been fit enough to play from the start, then there was no way I'd have predicted a Celtic win beforehand. I got it right though, but only because Fraser Forster had an unbelievable game, making some truly world-class saves throughout [the one against Jack was sensational], and Morelos missed so many chances, showing once again, especially with the penalty miss, that he simply can't score against Celtic - and for me he'll NEVER be a true Rangers great until he does.

Plus there were worrying signs, particularly his disgraceful lunge at Jullien, dragging his studs down his shin, that Morelos was starting to lose it again, which if the referee had seen would've resulted in him being sent off, together with various other petulant outbursts, so he needs to get a grip before his temper becomes his worst enemy again!

I was pleased that Frimpong did such a good job in keeping Kent quiet, who was rather disappointing and made little impact. And I think that Frimpong's sending off was harsh, although it was a definite penalty. In time, he's definitely going to be a big player for Celtic, as he's a major talent, and just bristling with energy and joie de vivre - a really smashing lad and footballer:)

Anyway, for me, as they showed against Aberdeen in midweek, Rangers are capable of playing some great football, but still lack the ruthlessness and winning mentality needed to go to the next level, and move from being a good team capable of winning lots of games, to a great team capable of winning trophies, but I think that'll come if they continue with their good habits and doing what they do well. If they can get one trophy, then I think more will follow.

However, today they were given a dose of the same medicine that Walter Smith's Rangers teams used to regularly dish out to Celtic, where Andy Goram broke so many Celtic hearts, with despite having been outplayed by Celtic for most of the game, Rangers would sneak it 1-0, and with Goram making the main difference. Well this time it was Forster denying Rangers, and in particular Morelos, and breaking Rangers' hearts. On these performances and those he's made this season in Europe, Gareth Southgate must seriously consider him now for England!

Anyway... Sometimes you win ugly, and sometimes with style - and this Celtic team have shown time and time again that they're capable of doing both *where it really counts*, especially in cup finals. And so until Rangers develop that particular skill, they'll continue hanging onto Celtic's coat tails. In that respect, I believe that the forthcoming league game at Celtic Park, on the 29th December, will be a defining moment for both teams, in terms of where the title will end up, but for now I'll just enjoy the here and now, and the winning of yet another trophy (their 10th in a row) for this remarkable Celtic team!!

Glad that you're feeling better, mate. However, in terms of the bit in bold, yes but largely because Celtic played with no recognised striker for 60 mins of the match. It was a different ball game when Edouard came on, as he transformed Celtic, whilst not even being near fully fit.

Your statement above will hold more water if/when Rangers succeed in outplaying a full-strength Celtic team, or at least one that features a recognised striker!;)

We were missing arguably our best mid in Davis so that helped balance it a bit. But yes eduard is a potential match winner and good outlet.
I noticed when Jack got injured we didn't have a single mid to go on in place.
Considering the amount of players we have in that area I thought that odd

Marco
08-12-2019, 23:18
We were missing arguably our best mid in Davis so that helped balance it a bit.

It did, in the sense that both teams were without key players from their starting line-ups, but not in terms of why Rangers were able to dominate the first 60 mins. In that respect, we definitely missed Edouard more than you missed Davis, simply because we had no out ball, and that stifled us big time.

If Davis had played, you might've performed even better, or won, but if Edouard had played from the start, you wouldn't have been able to dominate the game so much, which was proved with the difference he made when he came on in the second half. That's my point:)

How do you think Rangers would've coped if they weren't able to play Morelos, or any recognised striker? He's your main man, the same as Edouard is ours, so that was a massive blow for us.

We need to sign another quality striker in the January transfer window, if Griffiths isn't going to be that man, and if so I believe that will be key to us winning the title. We simply *cannot* go into another old firm game, final or otherwise, without a recognised striker, and hope to do again what we did today!:nono:

Marco.

My Neighbour has not changed his opinion, and I quote “ no decent manager would leave us short on strikers “. In the build up yesterday Strachan was taking about having to decide between having to pick 2 small strikers or 2 taller strikers, changed days the only available yesterday could manage 20 minutes.

Marco
09-12-2019, 11:35
Well, Bayo was signed as cover for Edouard, and no-one knew he was going to get injured and be out for such a long time, or that Griffiths would take as long to come back from his various issues. I agree though that another striker should've been signed in the summer, but the fact that it didn't happen could've been down to a number of factors (player availability and/or costs for starters), none of which would've been Lennon's fault.
,
Brendan Rodgers left Celtic plenty of times short of defenders, especially in crucial CL qualifying games, due to not having signed enough cover in that area in the summer transfer windows. Look at the Boyata situation and holding onto Lustig for too long, when he was past his best, and signing guys like Cristian Gamboa who weren't Celtic class, all of which was largely responsible for the 7 and 8-0 thumpings we got in the CL from Barcelona and PSG, so he's not absolved from that criticism either.

I'm afraid that your friend is blinkered and has rather illogical and entrenched views, as the stats speak for themselves:

Lennon's record with Celtic in Europe is superior to BR's, both this time as manager and before, and I'm pretty sure that their win ratios in domestic football (cups and league) would be very similar, taken over the same amount of games (as Lennon hasn't been there as long in his second spell). Plus BR's first season aside, Celtic are playing better football, scoring more goals under Lennon, and are just as difficult to beat as they were under Rodgers. They've maintained the same winning/never-say-die mentality instilled in them by him, which was illustrated no better than in yesterday's cup win, and which Lennon must be given credit for.

However, do I think that Lennon could do what Rodgers has done in the EPL with Leicester, or that he could go onto manage at the very top level in England? Maybe not, but he's already proving that he's at least as good a Celtic manager as BR was, based so far on his results! Quite simply, no-one else who would've came in to replace BR as manager would've done a better job.

If Celtic go onto win the league again and/or another treble this season, I'll come back and ask you the same question, and if your neighbour still refuses to acknowledge reality, and admit he was wrong, then he really WILL need some help in surgically removing those blinkers......!!.;)

Tom English sums up yesterday's game at Hampden rather succinctly: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50711628

Most notable was this stat, which I wasn't aware of, in reference to Celtic:

They have now won 31 straight cup ties, scoring 96 goals and conceding only nine, none of them to Rangers, who've had four cracks at them over the last four seasons.

In 47 hours of cup football, Celtic have trailed for a total of 47 minutes. That's a statistic to ponder.

Indeed... And none of that success or dominance has lessened under Lennon.

Absolutely, and it's starting to become a recurring theme of late, which as well as Rangers have been playing recently, is something that would be concerning me if I were a Rangers fan. Too much reliance on Morelos to get the goals.

Aribo, who's great on the ball and can create chances, needs to be less shot-shy, and shoot when he gets a sight of goal, instead of passing it all the time. And Kent needs to start doing more in these big games and live up to his transfer fee. He's been disappointing so far, as indeed he was on Sunday at Hampden.

Anyway, I'll go Rangers 3 Young Boys 1.

I'm watching the Rangers game now (recorded it), and then will catch the Celtic one afterwards on Celtic TV, so will comment on both matches later, including the Morelos sending off... The point is though, professional footballers should be concentrating 100% on playing football, not attracting adverse attention. Scott Brown is guilty of the same, and I don't approve of that either.

Morelos was showing signs of losing it against Celtic in the cup final, and now his petulance has come back to haunt him against Motherwell. I'm not excusing the actions of idiots throwing coins, but both rival fans and players know that he's got temperament issues and can be wound up, so will do their level best to provoke him!

He needs to learn to walk away and NOT react from any such provocation, otherwise he'll be back to square one like last season with his disciplinary record, and now Rangers will be without him with some crucial games coming up in the title race, so he's let himself down badly and the fans!

However, on a football note, well done to Rangers for bouncing back after some recent bad results, which I knew they would:)

Narrow wins today for both sides of the Glasgow divide, although I believe that Celtic's 2-1 over St Mirren was a little more comfortable, with Rangers needing Morelos to come off the bench and score the winner... I wonder how crucial that goal (and the three points) will be come the end of the season?

For me, *only* if Rangers win at Celtic Park on Sunday, which for me is a 'must win', or certainly a don't lose game for Rangers. More comment later!

Not looking good for the Canaries as we slump to the foot of the table... :( too many games with the teams in the bottom half where we haven’t been able to win, and inconsistent performances. Indeed, but Liverpool have a very strong squad, and if they win their game in hand, will have a 17 point lead... That's almost SIX games they'd have to lose on the bounce for City just to catch up, whilst winning all of their games, plus Liverpool also have a superior GD, so it's as good as six games.

I'd like to see what odds you'd get on that happening! No, for me Liverpool's worst enemy will be complacency, not injuries, especially when they get nearer to the finishing line....

They will certainly drop some points [they've yet to have their slump] before the end of the season, but so will City, and Liverpool will go onto win the EPL by a record points margin. Trust the Marco-boy;)

Anyway, my prediction on tomorrow's BIG one at Celtic Park, later after brekkie!

not saying its likely but it could happen. not sure their squad is that strong compared to first 11, hence why the same 11 or so play every week. city have much better strength in depth.

A malaise is the wrong word. Last season took its toll and, this year, we have faced a succession of challenges that we have not come to terms with. Injuries have ripped the heart from our left side - Sane, Laporte, Mendy and Zinchenko have all been injured for all or for large parts of the season. The loss of Kompany is key and we are nursing KDB to try and avoid further injury difficulties.

Though it pains me to say it, and it really does, Liverpool's form has applied so much pressure that it has caught up with us. We try to win on all fronts while they do not and it does take its toll. As a fifty year supporter any trophy is a bonus but I confess that I would rather it be anyone but Liverpool.

Marco
28-12-2019, 09:44
Ah, just read your post, Granty!

I fully support your logic, but do you think a draw would be good enough and reflect title-winning form? Think about it... Including the cup final, that would be NO wins in three attempts against Celtic this season, so for me that wouldn't be title-winning form, which is why I think Rangers will win, *if* they show the greater desire. As ever in old firm games, the team who needs to win most, and above all WANTS to win most, usually does....

For me though, if Rangers have got serious notions of becoming champions, then they *have* to beat Celtic at their ground, just as Celtic have done to Rangers at Ibrox this season. It's a mentality thing, and knowing how to take things to the next level.

Rangers have been playing very well recently and not losing games, but have yet to show that they've got what it takes to become champions and trophy winners, and so take that next step - and if they win tomorrow, for me they'll have finally taken that step. It's got to happen sometime, plus they'll still be smarting and out for revenge for the cup final defeat, which is why I'm predicting that they'll shock Celtic tomorrow by winning.

And THEN we'll have a real title race on our hands.... That's my prediction:)

It is the sense of entitlement. I had friends of mine organising league winner's parties in March last year and saying the 'back where we belong' stuff. When they didn't win, it became 'six times' and 'Pep's a failure because he was only brought to City to win the CL'. It is just nonsense. Since when did winning the first domestic treble become a failure?

Marco
28-12-2019, 10:32
Ah I see... Your feelings are understandable then, as I don't sign up to all that guff, and certainly living in Wales and not being 'wrapped up' in it all in Liverpool or Manchester, I was unaware of it.

The reason I support Liverpool is simply because I was a fan of the legendary teams of the 70s and 80s, the brand of football they played and the influence of their Scots contingent - that's what made me a Liverpool fan, much the same as I became a Celtic fan after watching Jimmy Johnstone, and the type of exciting and attacking football Celtic played during that era. It was *zero* to do with religion or family tradition, as my dad, or indeed any of my family weren't big football fans, although most of my friends at school were.

And in Klopp, a manager and person I respect highly [he's a typical German in the right way], I can sense some of those good times coming back. Liverpool, much the same as Man City or Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal, ALL deserve, and indeed, are capable of winning the title, simply due to their past achievements and status in English football. Therefore, I'd love to see strong examples of ALL of those teams, challenging for the title, rather than just one or two of the top teams dominating, as it makes things exciting:)

Marco.

struth

Tbh, if all my years have given me one thing, its every football team has a contingent of morons, some i agree worse than others, but usually only due to a bigger fanbase.
Even the ex players who spout in papers show they are pretty much at the same mentality level.

oldius
28-12-2019, 10:52
No teams deserve success because of their history. As an example, Liverpool did not win the FA Cup until 1965 and the Moores' family investment. They are no more deserving of winning now because they were successful for 20 years from that point.

Marco
28-12-2019, 11:04
Sure, you can play semantics with the word "deserve"; I simply mean that they have the requisite heritage and status in English football to warrant being considered as potential title winners, much the same in that respect, as the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea.

Love them or loathe them, Liverpool fans are among the most passionate and vociferous in the world, much the same as Celtic fans [indeed there is a great affinity and connection between the two clubs, and also Glasgow and Liverpool as cities], so if Liverpool do win the title this season, I'll look forward to the city of Liverpool becoming a sea of red, and the incredible party atmosphere that will generate, just the same as when Liverpool and Celtic fans join together in stadiums singing a spine-tingling rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'!

Marco.

oldius
28-12-2019, 11:20
I never felt that City deserved success and I had to wait forty four years for it. As such, I appreciate how lucky we are to be blessed with the owners we have because success would not be ours without the investment they made.

I wasn't playing semantics: there is no basis in sport for believing that previous success makes you more deserving of success in the future and that is how sport moves on - new blood brings new challenge and progress for the event itself.

Marco
28-12-2019, 11:35
I do agree with what you're saying. Quite simply, no-one deserves anything, unless they've put in the required effort to get it.

However, I've explained what I mean by 'deserve', in that context (although there may be better words), and stand by it:)

Marco.

He did all right at Liverpool but he wasn't really supported in the transfer market like Klopp has been. Once Saurez was sold and not replaced (and he was pretty irreplaceable), it was always going to be tough.

Yeah, defo, although they look like quality additions to the squad, especially in the striking position. I never want to get into the situation again of going into a cup final against Rangers (or any other team) without being able to field a recognised striker!:nono:

We've also got a history of quality Polish strikers playing for us ('Jackie' Dziekanowski and Maciej Zurawski), so if this boy turns out to be as good, he'll have been a good signing:)

Where did Rangers go for their January break? We were in Dubai.

Marco.

Dubai as well.. think we were in same hotel actually. lol. it was said that the 2 of them passed each other but didnt stop for a chat

They're all 'nice guys' at heart [even Morelos';)], but what Christie did was totally wrong. He's still a young player though, so he'll learn from it.

Remember when Rangers used to go to Il Ciocco, in Tuscany, for their pre-season training (would've been during the David Murray era): https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/lcvbr-renaissance-tuscany-il-ciocco-resort-and-spa/?scid=bb1a189a-fec3-4d19-a255-54ba596febe2

That's just up the road from where my family comes from, and where we had our holiday home... Stayed overnight and eaten there - stunning place... Ladies wore tiaras for dinner!:)

They had full-size pitches there as part of their facilities. Dunno if they still do.

Doubt we will add, although I think we will be missing a trick not to at least bring in a top loan... its important to keep players on their toes, and getting rid of so called "dead wood" that have been doing awfully well with out bringing in another challenger can make the first team sloppy

Been going for years. They kept telling lies etc. Then had to retract etc but slso a journo got banned from Ibrox and this is their revenge.

Fair enough, but I can't comment on the matter, as I don't know the facts or really anything about it. Does it hold more water than the notion that all refs are 'masons in black'?;)

As for the BBC, I love a lot of their output, particularly dramas and nature programmes, which IMO are the best in the world, but have no views on what you're referring to, and of course I'm not a Rangers fan, so don't 'feel' the bias you're referring to.

Another great result today, following Man City's draw at home to Palace yesterday, due to a late Fernandinho own-goal, which buries any hopes City had of being champions this season, and now means that Liverpool are 16 points clear at the top of the EPL!!:yay::yay:

Having just watched the highlights, it could've easily been 5 or 6... The only way Liverpool won't win the league now is if someone kidnaps their first team!:D

The glory days are on their way back to Anfield - you better believe it...... :exactly:

Poorish game, but with several buses across their penalty box it was difficult to see the net far less score. Have to say, i'd be pissed off if my team played that way in league.

It's all about survival for the wee teams, Granty... We've been subjected to the same, and you can't blame them. Rangers are looking a bit flat though, and for me you'll have to up the gears a bit if you're going to take all three points on Sunday against a Hearts team who are starting to get their act together...

Watched the first half of the Celtic game last night, as I'd recorded it as I was out, and then went to bed. Superb goal from Edouard, made by Frimpong. Going to watch the second half in a mo, when I have breakfast:)

Really pleased that Griffo is back fit, in the team and scoring goals!

Plus he brings so much to the team with his skilful and accurate delivery from set plays. Having him now available for selection is going to make a BIG difference to our title challenge, trust me;) And if Kimala produces the goods, that'll be icing on the cake... Even accounting for injuries, we've now got a really strong squad to compete in all the remaining competitions.

However, even when the likes of Christie, Forrest and Elyounoussi come back from injury, I hope that Lenny continues playing with two strikers at grounds such as Kilmarnock, on artificial pitches, as I think that having two strikers on tight pitches like that creates more space for our wingers/wingbacks to do damage, and that's also how I think we should play in away games, against the likes of Livingston, where we've often struggled.

Plus, now we have the players to do it, it's good to switch systems and keep opposing managers guessing as to what the team lineup and tactics will be! If I was to criticise Celtic, I'd say that we're become a bit too predictable. Ok, off now to make my coffee and toast:cool:

More later....

your lucky to have midfielders who can score from distance. Gers have not had such a player for years really.

Marco
23-01-2020, 11:20
Indeed, and that's why I think you need to sign someone like that before the window closes, and possibly another backup striker, as Morelos' disciplinary record is starting to look more like last season again. How many more suspensions is he liable to pick up before the season ends? And Rangers struggle to score goals without him. For me, right now, Celtic have a much stronger squad than Rangers, and thus are better prepared for coping with injuries to key players.

You can argue about who's got the strongest starting 11, but for me there's no argument about who could put out the two strongest teams from the players available in their respective squads. And so if Gerrard doesn't add to his squad in the January transfer window, and addresses the shortfalls I've outlined above, I think that would be a mistake that could potentially cost Rangers the title.

We are closing the gap, but folk have to accept it takes time.. Money doesn't grow on trees. Too much panic about a 9 and 10 for me. Not taking anything away from Celts as its a great achievement but we were not around for most of it so we shouldnt be too bothered personally.
I accept im maybe the only one who thins that way, but im more interested in bthe growth of the club. We have someof the best young players around who are being tutored in a superb enviornment. I'd rather see some of them play.

But by making that statement you're trying to;)

I could say that you only had yourselves to blame by overspending and going bankrupt to get the 9 you achieved! Plus, even if we don't get another 9-in-a-row, or 10. A 9 and an 8 will still be better than one 9!:ner:

Seriously though, I applaud and agree with your longterm development strategy.

Poor end to the first half and beginning of the second half for Celtic, with Ross County having spurned three very good chances to score.

Defensively today, we were all over the place, which I guess not having Frimpong or Ajer available would account for. Simunovic and Julien haven't played together much, and it showed, although why Jonny Hayes gets a game ahead of Greg Taylor I've no idea, and the former was guilty of quite few misplaced passes that could've let to us losing a goal.

Also, I'd have probably played the same team as beat Killie, midweek, with both Griffiths and Edouard upfront, but somehow Eddie was left on the bench and Griffo used as a lone striker. It didn't really work, which is why big Eddie came on as substitute, scored two great goals and won the match for us. Since returning from the winter break though, we've yet to hit top gear, but crucially are still winning games and picking up the three points.

Rangers have been doing the same, although in a somewhat less emphatic manner, which they'll need to improve upon today I feel if they're to take all three points away from Tynecastle, against an improved Hearts side who have their 'big guns' back. I think it'll be a close game, but Rangers will have enough to win it.

Match prediction: Hearts 1 Rangers 2.

Granty and Robin, any views?:)

Just sitting down to watch the Rangers game. Will be interesting seeing how Hearts play now with having the likes of Souttar and Naismith back in their ranks and new signing, Boyce, up front, plus with Stendel having had some time now to assess his squad and implement his tactical system.
