View Full Version : New Footie season - 2018/2019
Yup it's bizzare from both sides. After all that's been said, but suc h is modern footy I guess
George Edmundson signs a 4 year contract with us. At 21 he is highly rated so a good acquisition I think at 650k.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190621/47375570220da46ae5257fb879f313bd.jpg
Never heard of him, mate.... Where's he come from?:)
Marco.
Played for Oldham. We're a few epl teams sniffing about. Raw talented cb. Thin k he will do very well.
Ah I see... Don't follow the English lower leagues. Yeah, you could have snapped up a future star! :)
Glad we (eventually) managed to complete the deal for Turnbull. Apparently there's 3-4 more new signings on their way shortly, and we'll need them to bed in, in time for our first CL qualifier against FK Sarajevo on 10th July!!
Also good to see Griffiths back in the fold: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48717856
His goals will make a huge difference to us this season... I could see him partnering Edouard up front, as I think Lennon will change the system.
Marco.
I, d expect you to go to 442 more often. Lennon always liked it.
We have pretty much done ours. 1 lad to come.. Aribo.. and maybe another cb.
Then in late August maybe a loan player.
Off to Portugal for training so a lot of sweat to come for them.

Is Rafa showing Fascist leanings?
https://i.postimg.cc/pLGj4M36/Rafa-Salute.jpg
PS - I'm only kidding ;)
looks to be leaving newcastle.
looks to be leaving newcastle.
in fact i see now he is deffo away. that ashley is a walking disaster to anyone bar himself.
Our first home game of the season is against Newcastle so hoping they will still be unsettled by then! :eyebrows:
Our second confirmed signing - Josip Drmic. Nope, I don't know much about him. Could be a good signing if his injuries are behind him? https://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/canaries-sign-josip-drmi-after-leaving-borussia-monchengladbach-1-6123656?fbclid=IwAR23V9KoNxnaQM_at-JMgFMvsoHV6U5CN3Je02M-z5I0QPpO9xL7ReRS3WM If he can emulate even half of last season's free transfer sensation Teemu Pukki, that would be amazing. Time will tell.
Aribo is apparently signed. Will be paraded in Portugal tomorrow so I'm told.
Hope he is worth the hype.
Squad filling out nicely. Another cb and maybe a striker for me.
Not fussed if Kent comes tbh, and would rather play our own on left.
Qualifiers for Europe looming already lol.
Good stuff, mate. I'm sure that Aribo is quality, in terms of his footballing ability. Much will depend though, on his temperament, as for me that's where these Portuguese boys can fall down, and also how they handle themselves in terms of the Scottish climate, living in Glasgow as a Rangers player, and playing for a club with such a demanding support.
The same of course could be said of any foreign player joining Celtic! So it looks like you'll still have Morelos for another season? Surprised no bids came in for him, or did they and Rangers turned them down? I haven't heard anything about him staying or going...
We've still got some major business to do, and more new faces have been promised before our CL qualifiers, which I'm sure will be the case. I'm happy though with Turnbull, as he will certainly add quality to our squad, and more likely the first team.
If Arsenal want Tierney though, they'll have to do better than £15m!! Doubt he'd want to leave Celtic right now though, as a diehard Celt, and with 9-in a row still to go for.
Marco.

Marco.Aribo is English. Your maybe thinking of the young lad from Benfica(I think) Balde. Still not heard of conformation of him although it was supposedly happening. Apparently very highly thought of but only 16.
Re Teirney, well I guess if a top team come calling he will go. You never know if it's your only chance.
But being a big tic he may just want to stay at home with his boyhood team. Time will tell
Also see that Turnbull is having a second scan on a knee.

Well, you've got another ex-'Celtic' sensation now, Paddy Roberts! If he's half as good for you guys, as he was for us, you'll be laughing;)
Good luck anyway, for the coming season. I'll be rooting for Norwich against every team apart from Liverpool or Man Utd!

Cheers Marco! Yes, Roberts is a good loan signing, and unlike the last couple of times we’ve gone up, I’m not too fearful. Remind me of this post in a years time!

Lol yes, I knew there was some Portuguese boy linked with you. So did anyone come in for Morelos?
Tierney's good enough to choose when he wants to leave Celtic, and not be tempted into it at the wrong time, and perhaps to the wrong club. For me, he's got unfinished business with Celtic. I also see him as more of a Man City or Utd player, than an Arsenal one.
Marco.

Celtic will probably look to renegotiate the price now, if they still want him.
Wonder if the claimed failed medical will turn out to be as spectacular as that which John Hartson apparently failed with Rangers?:eyebrows:;)
Marco.
I did wonder if he failed one at Norwich?
Morelos is still with us. No idea if someone will buy him. Happy enough to keep a 30 goal striker, as long as he's learned, and think losing out to national team wised him up no end
Cool. It's just there was all the hype last season about him being in demand at clubs all over Europe, massive transfer fees quoted in the process, then nothing...
In term of Turnbull, surely if he'd failed a medical at Norwich, that information would've been known by Celtic?
Marco.

Marco.Re morelos. Plenty time yet if it happens it happens.. His several reds won't have helped tho. Still 30 goals a season strikers do t grow on trees. He did say he won't go to a club outside the epl unless they are in euro competitions.
So it really reduces his options.
Probably a must if he's to get back into national side

You would have thought so
Re the medical. No need for Norwich to say anything. It happens a lot. Buyer beware
Not saying it happened. But it has before many times I'm told
I'm thinking in terms of the press picking up on it. You'd think that any player about to sign for a club like Celtic would be high-profile news, and so if he'd failed a medical at Norwich it would be difficult for that info to stay out of the press...
Plus, if the he's genuinely got a problem with his knee, that's going to be discovered in any subsequent medical he undergoes at another club, so I don't see any advantage in either him, his agents, or anyone else hiding it. All that's achieved is wasting everyone's time.
Marco.

Marco.Sure. Still think it will go through.
Meant to say, some issues are OK with one club but not with another.
Wonder what "issue" then Rangers had with Hartson, who went onto become a Celtic legend, and one of the best and most prolific goal scorers Scottish football has seen!:D
Marco.
Forgot now but it proved to be a non issue football wise. Was a period when our medicals were done by the tea lady[emoji23]
Sure. Still think it will go through.
We'll see, mate, I hope so, but TBH, I'm not that bothered, as Celtic have plenty more irons in the fire, and if the Turnbull deal falls through, they'll just progress with their other signing targets.
Marco.
Forgot now but it proved to be a non issue football wise. Was a period when our medicals were done by the tea lady[emoji23]
Lol, more like the Tena Lady.... It was probably because he couldn't master the required handshake and didn't play the flute well enough!:D;)
Marco.
Don't think Advokaat wanted him to be honest.
Yeah, that's a distinct possibility. What a diddy, eh!
And the man who's overspending (coupled with unrealistic expectations from the board) eventually bankrupted Rangers.... 12m for Tore André Flo, in those days! {Cough}. Can't remember how much Celtic paid for Hartson, but likely not much more than half that, for three times the player!
Marco.

Very true
So, Turnbull's defo a no-no :https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48777582
I'm glad that this knee problem has been revealed, as there's no point in signing a player that's going to be out for months before he even kicks a ball. However, what a total waste of time for everyone concerned!
Surely Motherwell and/or Turnbull himself must've known about the knee problem, so why try and hide something like that with the inevitable outcome? Crazy......
Marco.
This guy looks the biz (very good pedigree), and we need a centre half more than we need another midfielder: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48770628
It's also important to maintain a good French influence in the team, to keep big Edu and Ollie happy:)

Looks a decent player, which we had that kinda money to spend.
Looks a decent player, which we had that kinda money to spend. On my site he is 87 rated but no improvements since 2017, so a change of league might help him. Good age at 26
Yeah, I think that's exactly it. He needs a change of scenery and I think will shine in a team like Celtic, where most of the time they're attacking and where he can win trophies.
Meanwhile, reports suggest we're to put a £5m bid in for Northern Ireland internationalist Paddy McNair, as a replacement for Turnbull, whom in my opinion is a better player, and if done that will be a nice bit of business and will definitely strengthen our midfield. See here: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/paddy-mcnair-celtic-transfer-target-17267551
With Bayo and Shved impressing in training, and Griffiths scoring in 6-1 hammering of Austrian opposition in one of our pre-season friendlies, it's starting to look good:)
Marco.
Highly rated RoI youth international Luca Connell has now signed for us from Bolton, ahead of Arsenal and Southampton: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48810612

yeah saw the lad up getting the royal tour during week. could be a good one come time
Yeah, and I like the look of Paddy McNair, too... Always thought that given Celtic's history, there should be much more Irish players playing for us, as there was at one time. You can always guarantee a good work rate and determination from them, as it's in their blood.
Marco.

Paddy is a big Gers fan so I don't know if it will have a bearing on anything; may well do with the fans too, especially if he plays badly  But Broony was a gers fan once too so no reason why not, especially nowadays.
We I think are pretty much done for now. May bring in nearer close of window, but will be concentrating on the euro qualifiers and also offloading a few non starters
Well, let's face it, if you're from an Irish background then you're either one or the other!;)
If McNair's a Gers fan, with professional footballers, history dictates that it'll just make him all the more determined to beat his rivals... Doubt Broony was ever a *true* Gers fan, otherwise he wouldn't have become such an iconic figure for us and a Celtic legend. He was/is far more of a Hibs fan than he ever was a Rangers one.
Marco.
Big Tam Gemmell was a Gers fan too TBH, and it didnt stop him. Its becoming less important as time goes on thankfully. BUT its still got a ways to go with many of the general public sadly. Rangers as a club, is very much multi cultural now, and the bad old days consigned to where they belong..HISTORY.:)
Again alas, many of the fans are still living in the 17th century on a Saturday tho:doh:
I know, and it does my tits in. How I'd love to weed out all that neanderthal sectarian shite!
Anyway, it looks like we're going to be signing highly-rated Rapid Vienna left back Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.for £3m, hopefully as cover for KT, not as a replacement.. He's going to go sometime, for sure, but for me the time isn't right and neither is the proposed club, Arsenal - and neither is the current transfer bid.
Only £25m+ will get Celtic talking. Nice to have all these valuable assets, innit?;)

Have we? I haven't heard. In any case, we've got plenty of cover in that area, so no biggie... It's fullbacks we need, since Lusto's departure, and if we do some good business there before the CL qualifier deadline on Thursday, we'll be good to go!
My gut says Tierney won't want to go this season (and likely not next year either, if we're going for 10-in-a-row), unless the likes of Man Utd, Man City, or possibly Chelsea, come in (Liverpool already have Robertson). He'll want to join an EPL club that has a decent chance of winning the league, and right now that's not Arsenal.
Rumour has it that wealthy clubs in China are also set to bid big for Rogic (reportedly £12m or so). Much as I love Rogic, if that sort of cash came in, I'd take it, as he wasn't the same player last season and I think might relish a new challenge.
It's frightening (at least in Scottish terms) how much some of Celtic's best players are worth potentially, when you consider not only Tierney and Rogic, but Forrest, McGregor, Ntcham and Edouard.... Bayo also looks to be in that ilk too, and someone who I predict will be terrorising a few defences this season!:eyebrows:
In the pre-season games so far he's formed a great partnership with Griffiths (within the new 4-4-2 formation). Aside from anything else, if Griffiths stays injury free and starts enough games, he'll guarantee you 25 goals a season (possibly more), which is a luxury we didn't enjoy last season.

Of course if your previous manager sells Harry McGuire for silly money then he might come back to raid some the better Celtic players.
Yup, that's always been likely to happen, and at some point probably will. But look at all the potential PROFIT (and lovely lolly) coming in, with which to spend on top-notch replacements... Considering many of our best assets have been home grown, and so cost hee-haw!;)
Rangers need to start bringing through players like that from their academy, as nurturing home-grown talent, developing them into top players, then eventually selling them onto wealthier clubs for huge fees, is the only way either of the Old Firm can begin to compete in Europe...
Without that continual injection of cash, coupled with the occasion boost from CL group-stage qualification if/when it happens, we've got no chance!
Marco.
we need to as a club, but our fans are worlds worst for patience with players. puts me right off them tbh...so short sighted
Yup, and also shrewd buys in the transfer market, which Morelos aside, is also something else you've been badly lacking... More wasting money you don't have!
But... I think Gerrard will help address that balance, especially with Aribo, who in my opinion is top notch - and if he has a really good season with Rangers, especially in Europe, will be someone you could sell on later for a big fee:)
Marco.

I think we have potentially a few who could make biggish money in future. Katic(2m but already a Croatian cap) and Barasic (also a top international)both could, but need good season. Kamara (50k)too, who i rate the highest.
Obviously Morelos (1m)and Tavinier(300k), who potentially have already risen, probably as high as they will go in spl would both make tidy sums considering they were fairly cheap.
Hastie was free and many at Motherwell rated him higher potential than Turnbull.. The new lad Edmunson too, along with Aribo so there is potential....Alas potential isnt enough and they will need to show it, especially in the Europa where you get noticed most.

Yup, I agree also about the players you mention, especially Tav and the two Croatian players, although as you say they'll all need to be performing at the peak of their ability this season, for them to realise their potential sale value.
And yes. for the sake of our co-efficient, good luck to ALL Scottish teams in their upcoming games in Europe!
Marco.
as per usual its a hectic schedule so early on, anything can happen as we are often playing sides who are already match fit.
Its a hard job trying to get into a position where your teams dont go in early. especially when the national team are so poor and our league is way down pecking order.
Still, I hope some at least will make it to their respective group stages.
Yup, the system is badly skewed against us, and favours teams from the rich leagues. And in terms of the CL, even EPL teams (and others) who are 'champions' of fuck all, still automatically qualify for the group stages!!:rolleyes:
Marco.

can never tell how an op will go and if he will be same after. its hit n miss and at that age i'd steer clear.
Yeah, we'll see. Still feel he'll end up at Celtic... Anyway, it's confirmed, we've now signed Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo [oh how the commentators will love that one - bet they shorten it to just 'Boli':eyebrows:] : https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48861383
Done a bit of research on him, and he looks quality, as most Belgian players are. He's a cousin of Romelu and Jordan Lukaku, so in not bad company... That's us spent over £10m now this summer, and it would've been much more if we had managed to sign Turnbull, not forgetting rob Luca Connell from Bolton for a silly-low fee, due to some fortunate technicalities!
Marco.
That guy looks good. A replacement for Tierney if he goes otherwise maybe on wing.
You got any more imminent?
We are loaning out the Mcrorie brothers. Looks like sg is hoping Ross will do as well as Docherty did.

Yeah, apparently we're on the verge of signing Hatem Abd Elhamed, from Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva, for around £2million. He can play at centre-half or right back position, so could be a replacement for Lustig. Bitton, our current resident Israeli, would no doubt help him settle in. Check out this compilation on YT of him playing for Dynamo Bucharest:
https://youtu.be/NYPhVmeJFgg
Looks like he can play a bit and has an eye for goal!:)
Marco.
Ah yes I know of him. 28yold. Decent player.
Yup, he defo looks quality...
It also appears, as indeed fans had suspected, that Ntcham wants away, and the rumours are that Marseille or Lyon are ready to table a bid of £15m. Now, although I'd be sorry to see him go, as he's a quality player, that news doesn't really bother me. He's been unsettled for a while now, and not himself since Dembele left, and indeed didn't play a massive part in our success last season, either through injury or not being selected.
In the same vein, the same could largely be said for Tierney, as injuries kept him out for much of last season, so it shows that even without factoring in the quality new players we've signed this summer, we were still good enough to win the treble, without Tierney's influence, or that of Ntcham, in many of our games, and now with the new players we've signed in our ranks, we should be even stronger.
So. here's the thing... Given that we still managed to win the league last season (and the cups) pretty comfortably without either Tierney or Ntcham (or for that matter even Rogic) having had a massive influence, if both were to go for the best part of £40m, how much stronger could we get with that type of cash, if the right replacements were signed?
For me, therefore, this is a crucial and pivotal time in the future development and success of the team, and even if Tierney and/or Ntcham should go, I can't help feeling rather excited about the future, and where we could go with potentially that amount of money being spent on top-notch replacements...
Exciting times, I feel, are ahead!
Marco.
knowing celtic tho, most of it will be pocketed by the owner and no doubt lawtohimself will get a rise :D
You can never tell how new players will do, only guess and that goes for all teams. sometimes they dont fit on a personal level or style level. Celktic are the standard other sides need to match, and talking up chances isnt going to make it happen. Only way is on park but a whole squad.
ive heard many Gers fans say, if we didnt lose or draw this or that game last season we could have won league; I say if Celtic didnt do the same they might have won it by 16 points.
Only thing I will say is Gers on paper look to be better equipped. Celtic probably will be too, so we can only see how it works out. could be a great season

Looks like Lennon is starting to put his stamp on the team and squad, also good to see Gerrard trimming the squad as well still around the 30 mark though.
knowing celtic tho, most of it will be pocketed by the owner and no doubt lawtohimself will get a rise :D
Ha - in the past that's often that's been the case, but you can't fault them recently: £9m on Edouard, £7m on Julien, £3.5m on Bolingoli (same on Turnbull if he hadn't had that injury), etc... So if Ntcham goes, you can bet your boots that a large chunk of the cash will be spent on a quality midfielder to replace him.

Yeah, definitely. You don't know exactly what you're getting until it's proven on the park. However, in recent times, we've got more right than we have wrong, especially with the big-money guys (can't think of single failure there), so I'd be confident, especially with Lennon at the helm. as IMO he's got a better eye for a player than Rodgers had.

bought the oxford game today. starts at 3 pm. trying out my newer laptop i use for music into the tv via a cable. see how it performs. £10 a game isnt cheap but a lot less than a ticket, and supports the club.
Nice one. You should do more of that. Hope you get a good result:cool:

Gibraltar, isn't it? Hope you get a better result there than we did in BR's first competitive game in Europe, against Lincoln Red Imps! Expect the pitch to be the SHITEST thing you've ever seen in your life [your local public park will be better], and the temperature to be stupid-hot.
Don't worry though if you don't get the best result in that game (as long as you don't concede any more than one goal), as you'll pump them easy at Ibrox. I'd still expect you to win over there, though.

yup, same ground as there is only one suitable, so at least we get first bit. its a artificial i think so some players wont be even considered.
Aribo, Hastie Edmunson, stewart plus polster and docherty getting starts.
team looks fit if ring rusty.. new boys mostly looking impressive. 1-0(candyman) but Aribo and edmundson the standouts along with docherty and candy.
Oxford look like no mugs either.
edit. 2-0 greg stewart from a right tight angle...good goal actually.

Looking ok so far Grant
Always love it when Scottish teams spank the Englanders...:eyebrows:
I know Oxford are in the third tier of English football, but that doesn't matter. I'd support Rangers against ANY English team in Europe (or in friendlies against English opposition) - even Liverpool or Man Utd. Honestly! Anyway, hope you pump Oxford royally...

Decent first half, but there will be lots changes in the second half, scored 2 so far easily should have been 4.
4-0 now. been 2 batches of changes. Mayo and Ojo the scorers. McPake was on for a short spell and did a Cruyff type move thats worth catching
finished 5-0 defoe.. great move right at death. a good workout. A lot of decent players i think.

07-07-2019, 16:06
Yeah, good work out today, two very different systems played, 4,3,3 in the first half fast and fluid. The second half reverted to the usual with Davis acting as the quarterback
only injury i saw was mcpake who is unlikely to play, along with el buffalo who has an injury too, so plenty to choose from on tuesday. a clean sheet will do; if we get a goal all the better.

think being before season gets going, it will be potentially a banana skin, but you should be good enough to go through with room to spare. a poor performance tho could cause probs.
Teams from that part of Europe are generally pretty capable, especially at home, so I'm expecting a tough game on Tuesday. For me, as long as the result gives us a chance to finish things at Celtic Park, we'll be ok.
It'll be interesting to see what team Lenny picks.
Marco.
Indeed they can. But you've filled your rear end with some decent players so u should be too good even at 75%

0-0 is always a good result away from home in Europe
0-1 is better. Think both could win away. Most important is the clean sheets in euros. Unless your a big side like Liverpool with great firepower 0-0,0-1 or even 2-1 away
Yup, I'd go with that:)
Potentially, we'll have plenty of firepower this season too, if Edu kicks on from last season, Griffiths continues his pre-season form, and Bayo (who looks to be an exceptional talent, and deadly) fulfils his promise, coupled with service from the likes of Shved, Mikey Johnston, Forrest, etc....
We're certainly not short of goals throughout the team.
Marco.
i hear your after tommy smith of huddersfield as well. bookies have you 1/3 to win league  a bit premature but suits me sir :ner:
Haven't heard anything about that, mate. Got any links?:)
As for taking bets on who's going to win the league, not my style... We'll do a top 6 predictions forecast nearer the time. Out with of us, there are a few interesting things that have been put into the mix for this season, such as the possible influence of Kilmarnock's new Italian manager, and potentially what exciting players his contacts could bring to Scotland, not to mentioned the big money investment into Hibs, and what that could do for them.
Like I said, I think it's going to be a very interesting season!

Are you shelling out for Premier Sports to watch the match? I note that they've secured the rights for televising these games... I hope it's just the qualifiers and not the CL or Europa League proper, if either of us get there, as I refuse to pay a subscription for Sky Sports, BT Sports. Premier Sports, and Celtic TV!
Therefore, I'll be watching the Sarajevo match tonight on delayed transmission, after midnight, on the latter.

Interesting... Wouldn't have considered Ajer at right back, and bringing Bitton into central defence - we'll see how that works out... Other than that, a pretty solid line-up with plenty of goal threat. Also be interesting to see how Boli does. Potential game-changers/match winners on the bench too, if necessary:)
Good luck in Gibraltar, dudes!

Marco.
Good result for you
Yup mate, cheers, and against more than decent opposition. Nicely summed up in the BBC match report:
This was supposed to be a really tough tie but, apart from the first 15 minutes, I thought Celtic bossed the game. Scott Brown was outstanding in the middle of the park. They had players that were willing to take the ball and pass it. A fantastic strike from Mikey Johnston and the second half was a composed, disciplined performance. To win 3-1 away from home will make Neil Lennon a happy man.
Indeed! I've still to watch the game [delayed transmission after midnight on Celtic TV, so it'll be a late night!] but it seems that Mikey Johnston had a great game, which I'm really pleased about, as he's such an exciting talent. Trust me, he's the next future multi-million pound player to come through our academy - and he's not alone either!:)
This tie was always a potential banana skin, so to have come through it so positively, at this stage in the team's build up to full fitness, is very pleasing, although of course it isn't over. At home, we'll have to guard against losing away goal, which could make things awkward.

I'd be very wary of getting into a lot of debt, simply to try and stop 9-in-a-row and/or punch too far above your weight, in terms of seeking success. You've been there before, during the Murray era, with disastrous consequences, and I'd hate to see that happen again. If you try and get into a spending war with Celtic, there's only going to be one outcome.
I certainly wasn't one of the Celtic supporters who was cheering from the heavens when Rangers were declared bankrupt, especially, if it weren't for Fergus McCann, it could've so easily happened to us!

Not really spent anything thus year so not worried really.
Since the share issue was agreed then all soft loans are effectively gone so club is free of debt.

Yeah plenty of rumours flying around.
Good to see both Kilmarnock and Aberdeen getting wins in their games last night, to continue the Scottish success in Europe, although Aberdeen conceded a late away goal in their match, which could make things difficult.
However, I'd expect both to get through to the next round, along with Rangers and Celtic:cool:

Yup, he looks like quality, and I suspect will bring a genuine improvement to your team. Perhaps the new Richard Gough?
For me, it's a case of 'bring it on' (and that applies to ALL the SPL teams), in terms of signing as many quality new players as possible, to strengthen and improve the overall quality of the SPL:)
The harder it is to win games, the more kudos there'll be for the eventual champions:cool:

Meant to post this the other day, but I see that Arsenal have now upped their bid to £25m for Tierney, which would be a new Scottish record: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48979998
It all depends now if the board accept the offer, and crucially if Tierney wants to go. I suspect that both are on the cards, sooner rather than later... Not a bad profit though for someone who cost fuck all!:eyebrows: We'll see what's done with the cash, if the deal does go through.
