Lol - it wasn't that type of game, though... In the first half, Aberdeen could've been 2-0 up! However, Lustig's goal, just before half time, effectively killed it, and Celtic cruised the second half.

Now........................................ ROLL ON THE TREBLE, TREBLE!!

Yeah, I watched the game. It was as cack as some of ours recently, up until the 0-3 win against Aberdeen! Rangers were by far the better side and should've won by more, but they looked distinctly lacklustre, compared with their other recent performances. If Hibs had shown more attacking intent, it might've been different, but they were even more disappointing than Rangers! Still, you got the win, which is ultimately what counts most.

And yes, what McGregor did was total idiocy! There was absolutely ZERO excuse for his actions....

In all seriousness, if Rangers are to mount a genuine title challenge to us next season, then never mind who they sign in the summer, they'll have to sort out their disciplinary record, which quite simply is woeful! You can't maintain consistency when you've continually got key players missing through suspension.

I wonder how much of a loss McGregor will be on Sunday against us? We'll see...

You're now going to be fielding a goalkeeper who, to my knowledge, hasn't played all season, in a game you'd dearly love to win, simply to lay down a marker for next season. That will defo weaken your team, but I still think you'll have enough to either win or draw, as even though it's an old firm game, I can't see us playing full out, as we won't want to risk any serious injuries for the cup final against Hearts.

Therefore, experience tells me in these games, when either Rangers or Celtic need to win, or one needs it more than the other, that's exactly what happens... And on top of that, you guys will be out to 'avenge' your defeat at Celtic Park, and the Brown/Morelos thing, which is why I can't see us leaving Ibrox on Sunday with anything more than a draw.

Will be interesting on Sunday, we were shocking in the second half, Hibs had their first corner in about 85 minutes if we play like that again Celtic will be easy winners. Looks like Wes will be in goal, he played in some cup games earlier in the season don't think he has played since then. That was our 12th red card of the season a very proud record not!

Now that was a great game of football, Stevie G should be showing that to his players tomorrow, well done Liverpool.

Marco
07-05-2019, 21:11
Yes, defo disappointing, but you're talking about the semi-finals of the Champions League, against a team like Barca (with Messi in their ranks), who on their day can do that to anyone!

TBH, I didn't expect Liverpool to do as well this season in Europe, as they're still at the building stage, although well into it now under Klopp. I acknowledge that the CL is important, due to the kudos and huge sums of cash gained from progressing through the rounds, and it would've been a massive thing for Liverpool to have won it, but they really should be concentrating all their efforts on winning the EPL. That's their main priority!

In that respect, the CL is a major distraction, as it's very difficult, even with the size and quality of squad Liverpool have, to compete on both fronts at the final stages of those competitions, so I just hope that Liverpool don't suffer a 'hangover' in their away game to Newcastle on Saturday, which wouldn't be an easy game at the best of times, and so gift the title to City!

However, in terms of the return match against Barca, at Anfield, look out for a big Liverpool comeback... I'm certain that they can pull it level, as they're a very different team at home - *if* they don't concede an away goal, and then who knows what might happen... If Barca score first though, it's over.

Well, what did I say: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48179167

Yup, Klopp is building some team there, which is getting markedly better every season! If they don't win the EPL this time, and I hope they do [sorry, Chris], then they'll defo be up there again next season.

However, it may be 'written in the stars' this year that Liverpool win a historic league and CL double!;)

And from a personal point of view, being a Celtic and Liverpool fan, just imagine the treble, treble, plus the above...... Now that would be a season to remember!!:D

Marco
08-05-2019, 08:47
Absolutely, but the quality of player at Liverpool is currently light years ahead, in every position, of what Rangers (or even Celtic) have. Neither team, right now, is remotely at that level.

Therefore, as well as Rangers 'playing for the jersey' and the manager (as outlined), which is fundamental, they need a significant injection of quality in virtually all areas of the team, if they're going to mount a challenge to Celtic for trophies next season, never mind reach Liverpool's level.

Maybe one day mate, for both our teams, if we ever gain access to the EPL and its HUGE financial rewards!;)

Right now we're being strangled by being two (very) big fish in a tiny pond....

Stunning result, who will they play in the final, can the spuds turn it round? I doubt it but you never know.

Indeed, Chris. For me, the semis and the final of the CL this year are indicative of the quality and influence of the EPL, which is now unquestionably the best and most competitive league in the world, and why EPL teams have featured largely in the final stages . I mean, when was the last time that Spurs had an opportunity, although slight, of reaching the final of Europe's top tournament?

However, the interesting, and also significant thing for me, is the resurgence of Ajax, who like Liverpool, have a great and very proud history in European football, but in comparison with the EPL and La Liga, or even the Bundesliga, play in a 'diddy league'... Plus, whilst by no means paupers, they operate on a virtual 'shoestring', financially, compared with the likes of PSG and Man City, or even Liverpool (interesting link here: https://www.goal.com/en-kw/lists/the-cost-of-ajaxs-squad-compared-to-madrid-juventus-europes/d2viyfge13sx1t116isvvnbn6#128c0kwmfhwy11jwcryxace0 ld), yet are on the verge of claiming the biggest prize in club football.

So........ What are they doing right, that the likes of PSG, Man City, Man Utd (although they are a team currently in transition), Real Madrid and Juventus aren't? And does their 'blueprint' for European success, give hope to the likes of Celtic and Rangers? The success of Ajax certainly highlights that you don't need to play in the best league in the world, or be the wealthiest team, to succeed in a competition now that's driven by money.

And what about your team, Arsenal, they could also learn a thing or two from Ajax... Whilst Liverpool's 'fairytale' journey to the CL final this season is remarkable, if Ajax get there too, which seems likely, and win it, that for me, would be even more remarkable!

Marco.

struth
08-05-2019, 09:12
Not addressed to me but for me the difference between say Ajax and the Old Firm is their fans and the club hierarchy dont insist on winning every game, or being above their rivals all the time. They nurture their youth, but at same time play them, and support them rather than hound them for missing a few passes etc.

IE, they have patience.

i might add Celtic are better than Rangers at this, although still have a way to go.

Marco
08-05-2019, 09:20
Agreed. Rangers will get there I think, as the signs are good with the success that the youngsters have had this season.

The question I posed, however, was addressed to everyone, so I'd appreciate feedback on it from all regular contributors, including you, and especially Chris [Strat], as for me considering that Man City have the second biggest budget to work with, their European success, particularly since they became one of the world's wealthiest clubs, has been little short of abysmal, so in that respect, what are they doing wrong...?:hmm:

I shall comment more after breakfast!:)

Marco.

P.S If Ajax win the CL next season, you can add Marc Overmars to the list of great footballers who've become great managers... I'd certainly take him for the Celtic job!;)

The league ends on Sunday 12th of May.
The FA Cup final is on the following Saturday, 18th of May.
The Champions League final is on the 1st of June.

It will be interesting to see how the Champions League finalists keep it together - 3 weeks is a long time to be kicking your heels.

What about my point, Chris, on City's lack of CL success, given that they have the second biggest [planet-sized] budget in Europe? What are Ajax doing right, that your club isn't? What are your thoughts on the matter?

Come on mate, let's get to the nitty-gritty of this rather thorny issue!

The fact is, despite City's huge wealth, they'll never be seen as one of Europe's true giants until they win the CL..... I have my theories on what the fundamental problem is.

Marco.

Cyrus

Ajax were last in the CL in 2015, being knocked out in the group stages, so their achievements might be regarded as a flash in the pan.
The question might be asked 'what are Man City doing right that Ajax aren't?'

Marco
08-05-2019, 10:16
What with having spent €682m, as opposed to €95m?;)

Or securing investment from a billionaire owner?

No way is Ajax's CL success this year a "flash in the pan"... You appear to need a small history lesson on Ajax, and their standing, based on their success to date, in European football: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFC_Ajax_in_European_football which dismisses the notion of their achievements, past or present, being a "flash in the pan".

Btw, I'm not anti-Man City, far from it, and indeed am always pleased for Chris when they win, unless it's against Liverpool or their rivals from 'the swamp':eyebrows:, but I'm curious what people's views are on their relative lack of European success, considering the huge sums of cash that they at their disposal.

Is it not being invested wisely or what?

Marco.

Cyrus
08-05-2019, 10:29
No history lesson needed at all. If we are talking about CL performances of late then Man City far eclipse Ajax. We can venture into history and look at Nottingham Forest with two European Cups if you want to talk about history, but if Forest got to the semis next season (hypothetically) you wouldn't be asking the same question.
City have their spending and recruitment strategy, Ajax have theirs - one can't learn from the other at all.

Stratmangler
08-05-2019, 10:31
What's thorny about it?
The season is long and hard.
We've had our share of player injuries. It was worse this season following on from the World Cup, and we had more players at the World Cup than any other team.
By final whistle of the FA Cup final we'll have played 50 domestic games.
Add on the 10 CL games, and that's a hell of a lot of fixtures.

We've played 58 out of 60 fixtures!
Fatigue sets in, and ultimately it's determination and sheer bloody mindedness that gets you over the line.
It was disappointing to have lost out to Spuds, especially considering that it was in the space of 11 days, and we beat them 2 out of 3 games. Somewhere in those 11 days we played Palace too.

We now have recovery time before the final game of the season (and I use the word final because that's what it will be), and we have recovery time before returning to Wembley for the FA Cup Final.

Liverpool were in and out of both the League Cup and FA Cup 1st game.
Time to lick wounds and recover.

Top teams in England will prioritize qualifying for next seasons champs league as no 1. having a good run in europe is also expected with obviously trying to win it.
but winning the epl is likely still no one goal, with champs league then fa cup behind

Sorry, totally disagree! You can *always* learn something from someone else's successes or failures, unless you're so arrogant as to think that you know it all already....

And in terms of the bit in bold, that's *exactly* how it should be, given the HUGE gulf in spending power. Therefore, budget per budget, in terms of CL performances, I'd argue that Ajax have been punching at (or above) their weight, far more than Man City.

Chris, thanks for your views. I'll comment later:)

Ok. Ajax are a club that operates on a 5 year cycle it seems. Build a team from youth, do well, team gets broken up and the cycle starts again. Their net spend is very low for this reason - get them in on the cheap (or from apprentices), sell them for a lot more.
Man City are a club where money is no object. The end. This is why their net spend is so high.

So, if Ajax adopt the City approach they have to focus much more on investment from outside the classic Ajax net, and keep players to build a squad of two world class players for each position. This still doesn't guarantee success; look at Barca, Real Madrid, Juve.

If Man City adopt the Ajax approach then they do away with big investment, re-align their wage structure and focus on their youth and scouting. This doesn't guarantee success either, and would take 10-15 years to completely change their strategy.

Ajax have their way, and accept the cycle of success at home followed by possible success in Europe (Europa + 1 season in the last 4 in the CL and doing rather well). City have their way, the way the top teams are doing it with varying levels of success. They will win the CL, and soon.

Ajax, much like Celtic [indeed the two teams are comparable in many ways, especially in terms of infrastructure, history/fan base worldwide and playing style] are ultimately a selling club, and I reckon that if Celtic played in the top Dutch league, which I'd contend is a better standard than the SPL, and the players had been coached/managed better in a tactical sense, for a longer period of time, then they may have achieved similar European success. That would also apply to Rangers.

However, my point is that the approach Ajax have adopted, given the respective budgets of both they and Man City, has been more fruitful overall in a European sense, although no way could either club realistically change and adopt the approach of the other. I do agree that City will win the CL soon, and indeed hope so, as I support all British clubs in Europe, as long as it's not at the expense of Liverpool or Man Utd.

I also have a soft spot for Wolves, especially under their current manager, and the style of football he has them playing. On their day, they're capable of beating anyone, but woefully inconsistent!

Btw, are you a Man City fan, and if not, which team do you support?

I think this is an outstanding crop of players Ajax have at moment but the best of them will leave this year and they will be back to sniffing around the group stages again.
Man city with their buying power, along with several other sides across Europe will always be in with a chance of winning it. City may manage their"Holy Grail" or they may not. Money gets you in the zone but it by itself doesn't win the big European baby

Thorny from the point of view that it's a subject you sometimes seem reluctant to discuss;)

You make some valid points, in terms of the amount of games played, recovery time, etc. However, in that respect have you got any idea how many games Celtic have played, not only this season, but for the last three, being involved to the death in ALL domestic competitions, including having to play 3 and 4 CL qualifiers, some before the season proper has kicked off? We also had a few key players on World Cup duty, although of course not as many as you.

Yes I know most of our games haven't been as demanding, although achieving such consistent success, even in Scotland, is harder than a lot of people think, but the point is, given the amount of money City have spent, they should have a strong enough squad to cope with both injuries and the amount of games that they have to play, so whilst I accept your point as being relevant, I don't consider it as a valid excuse for their relative poor success in Europe, not only under Pep, but those before him.

For me, the issue is more deep-rooted than that, and I'll touch upon it shortly:cool:

Tradition has a lot to do with it for me... its a hard thing to grasp is tradition; its an aura great Euro Clubs have most of the time. City have one of the best sides around, and one, if not the, best manager.. plenty money and a great stadia; lots of fans etc... and although they have won a euro trophy, they have yet to achieve the aura, mentality and tradition of a top Euro winning side.
It could easily happen tho, especially when or if they win the biggy once, as it could snowball...

Yes, agreed, undoubtedly, but the point is, it's a 'recipe' that works, unlike that, European-wise, of our two teams, or indeed Man City.

As to my view of the fundamental problem City have, in terms of winning the CL, their huge wealth aside, consider how big a club Man City *really* are in the eyes of most people, compared with other British clubs such as Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal - or even Celtic or Rangers - who for me all have more history of success, both domestically and in Europe, than Man City, plus a bigger worldwide fanbase (certainly before Mansour injected his billions, and City gained a considerable band of 'glory hunters', to bolster the undoubtedly loyal group of supporters, who've followed them through thick and thin, over many years), and therefore crucially, for me, those clubs have more 'emotional pull', in terms of people either wanting to support or play for them...

In that respect, and for me this is part of the problem, I wonder how many players in recent years have joined Man City, as diehard Man City fans, perhaps since boyhood, in the way of players who've come to Liverpool or Man Utd (or even Celtic or Rangers), or have signed for City simply for the money? I'd argue that those types of players will never give as much for their clubs, as those who have their club's colours running though their veins...

For me therefore, that lack of 'emotional pull' and the HEART/DESIRE (as you touched upon was evident in the Liverpool players during their amazing comeback and defeat of Barca) for players to pull on a Man City jersey, because of the club's historical lack of European success, is not the same, compared with players pulling on a Liverpool or Man Utd shirt, and why Man City have struggled to win, or even reach the semi-finals of the CL - and until that issue is successfully addressed, may continue to do so.

Essentially, I don't believe that enough of the players, currently playing for Man City, have the HEART or DETERMINATION to develop the type of mentality necessary, to consistently win the big prizes - and for the master at that, one need only look to Alex Ferguson and what he achieved with Man Utd.

Therefore, for me, money and status aside, until Man City are considered by the world's best footballers as being a truly huge club, and as 'sexy' to play for as the other two English teams mentioned, with all their historical success, not to mention that of the likes of a Real Madrid, they will struggle to win European football's top prize.

Can you see where I'm coming from?:)

Lol - that's *exactly it* (aura), and is basically what I've just said!:)

And that, including how 'sexy' the jersey is to play for/how much it *really* means to players, has a massive influence on how successful a team will be over a period of time. In that sense, City lack the "aura" of a Real Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, Man Utd (or even Celtic or Rangers), and for good reason, may always will.

Marco.

You can't build 'aura' or tradition over 5-10 years. It comes over decades and comes from nostalgia so I'll probably be dead before City are talked about in the same vein as Real Madrid etc. You lot will definitely be dead!

Marco
08-05-2019, 13:09
You can't build 'aura' or tradition over 5-10 years. It comes over decades and comes from nostalgia...

Exactly, but as you know, City have been around for much longer than 5-10 years.

We're not talking about a new football club here, but rather one that although wealthy beyond the dreams of most other clubs in Europe, are victims of their relative lack of success before the big money arrived, and so until that changes, won't have the same 'pull' or European status, as the teams that have been surrounded by said "aura" for years, due to the tradition and nostalgia you mention - and I'm not sure, from City's point of view, that simply chucking money at it is the answer.

Here's the thing... Take wages out of the equation, and if every big team in Europe paid the same money, and offered the same overall earning and football development potential for players, which teams do you think most would want to play for, and how high up do you think Man City would feature on that list?

Marco.

If a club has some decent money, as Ajax have they can then follow a blueprint of bringing players in through their youth system supported by some very clever buys around the £20 million mark. City on the other hand have mainly tried to buy success through lots of money at a series of big name managers and players.
I hope the Dutch teams become successful again, success to me is always finishing in the top 2 of your league and reaching the knockout stages of Europe.
Unless you have a big squad it’s hard to have success in a league and the Europa League.

I agree with all of the above, especially the bit in bold, in terms of PSV Eindhoven, and also the Italian clubs, who traditionally used to dominate Europe, but have fallen away in recent times, and unfortunately is the same with both of their international teams. I never want to watch another World Cup again without Holland and Italy!

The CL needs a strong Juve, and Inter and AC Milan, as well as a strong Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Marseille, Monaco and Lyon (not just PSG), as well as the big two from Spain, including all the top English teams, to maintain the highest standards possible for the competition.

Yes, in the past it was a much more even playing field, but now money can buy a certain amount of success. Personally would like to see Ajax in the final. Although not a Liverpool fan by any means, I do enjoy the type of football they play and they have only lost one league game this season I think, it would be a shame if they end up with nothing.

In many ways the EPL money has kinda ruined the Euro leagues and the big euro touneys, as England has an abnormal amount of talent playing there due to their buying power. Alas for them it backfires at international level a little with less Home players getting their chances.
The big teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Man C etc buy up most of the top talent at a young age, with very little chances of moving into to sides they are farmed out to develop and a profit made. Probably not the best way for kids to grow up being here, there or wherever.
But this is the way it is now.

It doesnt help matters that the majority of footy orginisations a corrupt or just downright unfit for purpose too.

There ain't going to be much money to expand the squad in the summer, but I genuinely believe that if they keep doing what they've been doing they will be ok in the Prem next season. Indeed, another great comeback. Having four teams in the respective European finals confirms as I said earlier, that the EPL is now unquestionably the best league in the world.

So... To today's old firm game at Ibrox. As ever lads, may the best team win! As I said before, given the prevailing circumstances, I can't see anything else other than a Rangers win or a draw. At the moment, I'm edging towards a scoring draw.

However... The most important thing is a clean, but competitive game of football, with no nasty tackles. 'score settling' from the previous encounter, and for both teams to finish with 11 players on the pitch, and no crowd trouble!

We shall see whether that transpires or not.

At least Liverpool have champs league final if they fail; city dont so really will want to win this, but of course they need to keep nerves in check..an early goal will be helpful.

As for the Old Firm game, it may be all powder puff and just blow away into mediocrity. Sure Gerrards men will be versed in staying on park. If he plays Morelos then it wont surprise me if he is targeted and he gets sent off again.

Exactly right (and as predicted), thus the team who wanted/needed to win most, did, as is almost always the case in old firm games! Well done:)

With the cup final on the horizon, Celtic made too many changes to the team, which upset their rhythm. Plus, when there's nothing *really* at stake, psychologically players take their foot off the gas... That doesn't detract though from a very good performance from Rangers.

Now, let's see what happens in the big games in England!

It's not a case of "can't get up", but if you've watched/followed these games for over 40 years, as I have, you'd know that the team with most motivation to win, usually does - and also the team who lost the last old firm meeting, usually 'avenges' the result, which is *exactly* what happened today.

Plus, with a very important cup final to play, players quite naturally won't want to risk any injuries, which was perfectly showcased with the disappointment in Lustig's face when he went off injured in the first half, and so won't play full out, whether they admit it or not. In that respect, for me the result is no surprise.

The SPL is also a lot better/more competitive than you think, which is why if you speak to some very good English players, who've played there, they'll tell you exactly that! You have to remember the paucity of money there is up in Scotland and the size of the country, compared with most other leagues in Europe, and which has a big impact on proceedings. If there was more TV money being injected into the SPL and bigger attendances at games, out with of Rangers and Celtic, things would be much different!

Anyway, yes, well done to Man City! In most other seasons, the points tally Liverpool have accrued would've been enough to have won the title, which shows how consistent City have been this year! Pleased for ya, Chris :clap:

Its the best supported league re population base. Think Gerrard mentioned something ive always said re the Scottish game. Cameras are always in poor positions, and often facing empty stands. It doesnt do the game much good.

So.... A 2-1 win today at Hearts means that we finish the season 9 points ahead of Rangers, who lost 1-2 against Kilmarnock, and who've finished third and secured a European place. A truly amazing season for Killie! Steve Clarke now looks set to be the next Scotland manager, and if so, that's fantastic news for Scotland fans:thumbsup:

Rangers close the gap on Celtic, and although finishing without a trophy, have improved significantly from where they were last season. I expect an even stronger challenge from them next season, and I'm sure that'll be the case, as we go for 9-in-a-row... However, for now, I'll just enjoy celebrating 8-in a row:

Looking forward to next season and hope we can offer a challenge.

Cheers, mate. You did this season, certainly in head-to-head encounters in the league. One thing you can safely say now, with Gerrard at the helm. is that getting regularly cuffed from Celtic, home and away, is a thing of the past.

So if you can improve your form against the other teams (and SC's left Killie now, so that might help;)), and do better in the cup, then you'll defo be up there. I'm sure that'll happen. The key thing will be the summer transfers activities of both teams, and in that respect, who does the best business... We'll certainly have the most money to spend, but it's about spending it wisely. Lennon though, has always had a keen eye for a player, better IMO than Rodgers did.

Anyway, I don't think any team will do a treble-treble again, which really is an amazing achievement, considering the 25 one-off cup games (where often anything can happen) Celtic have successfully negotiated - quite remarkable consistency! The same also goes for '9-in-rows', etc... If we get 10-in-a-row, then like the treble-treble, that will never again be achieved.

I could see one of us winning 2, perhaps 3, titles in a row, in a particularly good run, but never 9 or 10, so next season, for that reason alone, is destined to be a cracker!

Where's Granty?

The key is consistency which Rangers didn’t have this season, will be interesting to see what happens during the summer and which players come and go and how that’s going to change things.

Marco
26-05-2019, 09:35
Yup, but you also need more creativity [game changers/potential match winners] in your side, able to break teams and packed defences down, which as you know happens against Celtic and Rangers every week, and which Celtic have in abundance, and can turn draws or narrow defeats, into wins, plus more 'big game' players, who always do the biz in the big games, such as Edouard did yesterday,

He may not have scored as many goals this season as Morelos, but he invariably comes up with the big goals, in cup finals and European games, when they're needed most...

An interesting thing is everyone going on about our striking positions and how signings will need to be made, and I'm sure they will be, but let's not forget that before even a cheque has been written, we'll effectively have three new players up front next season: Bayo (who I expect to be a sensation), along with Maryan Shved, and of course Leigh Griffiths!! That alone will add considerable goal threat to our front line, before a penny is spent.

Plus the fact that Edouard will have had a good full season under his belt, which he'll have learned from, as still a young player himself, and so will be better again next season. Therefore, if we can add some quality to that frontline in the summer, we'll be more formidable in that area next season, as this season our goal-scoring tally was a little disappointing.

The big thing for us will be what happens in defence, which is where I think the main changes will be made.

We will be able to tell more once we see the make up of the various squads, hopefully we can strengthen in certain areas and as I said be much consistent. As I have said the Celtic team that finished the season under Lennon were nowhere near the Team under Brendan, from a Celtic point of view not sure that Neil Lennon was the right choice and one my neighbours a long standing season ticket holder agrees with me, but time will tell. From a Rangers point of view I think it’s a great appointment, hopefully that won’t come back and bite me on the arse.
Once we see the make up of the squads we will be able tell more.

Lol - I couldn't disagree more!! Lenny, as I've said many times before, is the *perfect* man for this particular job [a two year one to try and secure 10-in-a-row], as he's diehard Celtic man and knows what that means to the club and its supporters. After that we can go for a Benitez, Bilic or whatever, and concentrate more again on Europe. The fundamental focus next season will be on the league, league and nothing but the league!;)

I take your point about Rodgers. However, you have to remember it's BR's team and tactics that Lennon has been 'forced' to use since he came in, and which he has to be given huge credit for managing to successfully utilise to guide the team to winning the two trophies that remained.

You cannot judge any manager on a team he's inherited, so let's see what the 'Lennon Celtic' looks like, and the style that team plays, and judge him then on that basis - and let's not forget he's done it all before with Celtic, so winning titles and cups isn't exactly a new thing for him!

Time will tell Marco, it was only a couple of weeks ago they were booing him at Celtic Park, but I do agree in main it’s not his team and players so we will see what happens over the summer and next season.
I expect quite a few changes at both Rangers and Celtic.

Marco
26-05-2019, 11:23
Definitely, time will tell, Robin. However the "they" in question are simply idiots with completely unrealistic expectations, demanding that the team play swashbuckling football in every match, and as I said completely unrealistic, considering the prevailing circumstances, with a new manager having come in to try and finish the job of the departed one, using his players and tactics.

Realistically, what more could Neil Lennon have done, short of winning [in real terms] a meaningless match against Rangers at Ibrox?

He's won the league, by maintaining and adding to the 8 point lead BR left, and won the Scottish cup convincingly, beating three of the best teams in Scotland in the process, to secure the treble-treble - all under *severe* pressure, from both the fans and media. Anyone attempting to criticise what Lenny's achieved under those conditions in the short time he's been at the club seriously needs their head looked at.

So what's to stop him carrying on from where he left off next season?

In any case, I know as many Celtic fans (proper loyal ones, with some functioning grey matter between their ears) who are, like me, delighted that Lenny's got the job full time, and understand *exactly* the valid reasons for that, so you should start listening to us/them or a change, for a more reasoned and realistic summary of matters!:ner:;)

I think appointing Lennon was the easy option, for the last few years I have with several guys who are season ticket holders at Parkhead and to a man not one of them wanted him as the full time manager, theses are educated guys who have been watching their team for decades, and although they have been happy to give me abuse for the last few years about the state of my team, they are not happy about the new appointment.
There is no argument that Lennon has been successful and won a great deal in Scotland, and as I have said time will tell.
Once again the Celtic captain let himself down towards the end of the game yesterday, there was a very good reason that Brendan was playing him less and less.

Marco

It was only an 'easy option' because he was already in the job. However, that doesn't mean that it wasn't the right one.

Fair enough, the Celtic season ticket holders you know are paying their money, so they're entitled to their opinion, although perhaps next time you could ask them to outline exactly why, according to them that Lennon, given sufficient money to spend on players in the summer (as indeed will be the case), won't be capable of winning another two titles for Celtic, as he did last time he was in charge? Especially when his biggest rivals still have a rookie manager learning his trade, even though he's shown signs of ability.

It's *that* bit I don't get, as I'm not talking about progress in Europe. The Celtic fans I know (including me) would gladly swap any kind of European success whatsoever, in the next two years, for securing 10-in-a-row, which is *precisely* why Lennon is there, so tell me why, when as Celtic manager before he's been up against more proven and successful managers than Gerrard, he's not capable of doing that job?

Btw, that's not to say that Gerrard won't get the better of him (and Celtic) next season - that could well happen for a variety of reasons - but not because Lennon's fundamentally not up to the task, or doesn't have the right credentials, as history both past and recent suggests otherwise.

I missed what Brown did at the end, as I was watching the game late last night, on catch-up, on Celtic TV, and fell asleep towards the end... So what did he do?

Regardless, Broony is still a very capable captain/leader and player, and who would grace most teams in Britain, even some in the EPL. He's certainly no angel though, as indeed many others aren't. The fact is, he gets a LOT of abuse, which he largely takes on the chin.

There have been plenty of Rangers players in the past who's actions on and off the field have left a lot to be desired, and who weren't under the constant spotlight and scrutiny of social media, as Brown is and other players are today. The truth of the matter is that Scott Brown largely gets up the noses of opposition fans and players, because they're jealous that they don't have someone like him in THEIR team!;)

What would Rangers give now for another Andy Goram, Richard Gough, Ian Durrant or Barry Ferguson?

Interesting I have just been going through the Sunday papers, and I quote “ his goading of Uche Ikpeazu showed a lack of class”, I just think that any leader/captain of a team should some class.
I think the teams is Scotland should be trying to follow the Ajax example, we need to have Scottish football league and national back at a much higher level.
Until we see who comes in and goes out our respective teams, I will reserve judgement on how well we will do next season, hopefully the Rangers manager has learned from his first season.

You mean like Barry Ferguson had, behaving no better than a ned, around Glasgow, while captain of Rangers?;)

Seriously though, I get what you mean, and as you know I don't condone that type of behaviour, but how often do other players set out to goad Brown? He's only human, so can only take so much provocation without reacting. In terms of Ikpeazu, you don't know what history exists from their previous encounters on the pitch.

This, however, I full agree with:

I'd certainly settle for Celtic emulating Ajax on the pitch, as I'm sure you would with Rangers, as they are the definitive example of what can be achieved by a big club in a small league, compared with the the likes of the EPL or La Liga, but I don't think you can ever 'tame' players with a natural winning mentality/competitive streak, and who are usually a bit of a handful, and in reality you don't want to, as it would dilute their effectiveness and what makes them special.

I'll similarly reserve judgement on how well either team will do next season, until I see what happens this summer in the transfer market.

As for NF Lennon getting offered the job at Celtic; it was on cards and I guess Rangers fans will be happier with him than a Benitez type, but he is an experienced man and knows club so should be fine. Might not have the charismatic draw to new signings that Gerrard has but I think Celtic want to try and get 10 so are going safety first.
Whether it falls flat or not is irrelevant as a Benitez could have too, then everyone would be saying they should have gone with NFL. Catch22.

I will say this, the pressure on all involved will only increase, so it may be more difficult than many supporters think.... I wont say good luck tho;)

Sure, and good luck to all who enjoyed it and the supporters of the winning team... But it was of ZERO interest to me, so I couldn't give a fuck how much it was worth. There are more important things in life, and also gauges for success than money. And the only three domestic teams I'm really interested in are Celtic, Liverpool and Man Utd.

In terms of the bit in bold, what's your point, other than trying to be smart? It was taken outside a traditional Celtic supporters pub in the pouring rain in Glasgow. As I said, I deliberately selected pics of the bus itself, because I wanted to highlight the 'Treble Treble' and 'Hoops We Did it Again' bit, not where the biggest crowds were.

How many do you think are in the second and third pictures? But that doesn't suit your agenda, does it...?

Germany is a fabulous country, and most of the people I've met there have been great. They tend to love Scotland (and the Scots), especially drinking malt whisky - and BOY can the Germans drink, but you rarely see them drunk in pubs, or in the streets, and acting like idiots, as you do here with many Brits.

didnt manage to remain awake alas for all the game. was getting texts in from me app tho. Ive seen all the data etc. The game went as i thought it would. early breakthrough(although earlier than a thought lol) and as the Spurs threw more caution to wind a killer blow.
Liverpool won most of the big head to heads and are worthy champs.

our manager is ecstatic... now can he copy Klopp:D

I think it was a scrappy game partly because we played kick and run. I suspect it was a deliberate strategy. Whatever, it worked.

sure it was, especially if they got ahead early. Liverpools' use of the long ball was good and bypassed Spurs' better midfield.
Firmino wasnt fit, and neither was Kane. I had a feeling Origi would get the last say.

Well done to Liverpool for winning the Champions League.
The penalty was dubious to say the least, but at least somebody managed to score a goal that wasn't tainted with UEFA ineptitude and curious decision making.

The only bit of the game I saw (and that was this morning, when my son played it back to me) was what led up to the penalty decision, and UEFA managed to show themselves in a very poor light.
I thought they were using VAR, but it's apparent they only use it when it suits UEFA.

There's the Charity Shield, and the UEFA Supercup, and just for good measure there's the World Club Cup in Qatar during the winter break.

Well, my point is you were winning next to nothing before RA arrived, whereas Celtic have been winning trophies (including the European cup with a team of all-Scottish players, from the Celtic academy), and have been competing well in European competitions, near enough since the club's inception. Plus we play in front of 65,000 fans every other week.

You had to BUY success, we didn't.

Yes of course you need "real wonga" to compete, so what do you think Celtic [or Rangers, for that matter] could achieve, with their history and worldwide fanbase, if they had as much "real wonga" as Chelsea (or Man City, or Liverpool)??;)

Therefore, your argument about achievement is completely invalid, in the absence of a level financial playing field.

Yes the Bluebird cafe is still on the go but with new owners, same ice cream but, I had to there every Sunday when I stayed with my parents. Gourock has changed a bit in the last couple of years but still has some great houses.
I’ve been to Gleddoch several times and played golf there as well, some great views on the back nine.
As I worked for CalMac ferries until I took early retirement a few weeks ago, I have also worked in Gourock for the last 35 years and mum still lives there.

Ah, shame about the WB hotel. It was particularly good in the 70s, through to the early 80s, as they had an excellent chef. Didn't know about cars being stopped now on the ferry - do you know why that decision was taken? It'll be a hell of a long way round now to Dunoon!

One of my first hotel/corporate contacts for pictures, when I first started my business, was the Selbourne Hotel, in Dunoon. Not especially salubrious, but there were plenty of walls onto which artwork was required... At the time I didn't know it was part of large-ish chain, and the manager there was so pleased with the work I'd done, he spoke to their head office and I ended up with the contract to do all the hotels in the group, dotted around British seaside resorts!

I then used the work I'd done for them as an advert and way to get into larger hotel chains, building up a portfolio as I went along, eventually providing corporate artwork for the Forte Group, Holiday Inn, etc.. That gave the business a good kickstart and helped to grow it in the early days, and is largely the reason I was able to semi-retire early:)

Ah yes, I get the picture lol, even if it's tiny! The Bluebird Cafe... Has it been done up inside now, or is it still like something out of the 1960s? I actually rather enjoyed its 'distressed retro charm'!

If memory serves me correctly, there was also another superb cake/coffee shop somewhere else I think just outside of Gourock, perhaps just as you come into the town from Greenock, on the right hand side. Used to stop there for a bite to eat. Not sure if you know where I mean?

You can still go to Dunoon by ferry by Western Ferries, CalMac are subject to EU tendering processes and subsidies, and only receive a subsidy for a passenger service town centre to town centre.

...as part of the Celtic coaching staff: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/henrik-larsson-in-frame-celtic-16479619

Now *THAT* (if it happens) would certainly help entice top players to the club, among other things!!:eyebrows:

Read that. Good player. Don't know what his coaching is like but certainly a name

GOOD player??:eek::eek::nono::D

Arguably the best foreign player ever to grace Scottish football, and WORLD CLASS!! My favourite Celtic player of all time too, although Jinky would be in there - just a bit before my time to have seen the best of him.

However, if Larsson comes, he won't be here to play... Coaching-wise, I don't know, although his managerial record is nothing to shout about. However, for me, him and Lennon could bounce off each other well, and player wise, the name would certainly make signing for Celtic quite a bit 'sexier'.

We'll see what happens:cool:

Good player, at times unstoppable not sure about his coaching abilities.

As for best foreign player, that would be a big discussion and would also depend on the definition of foreign.

Well, I wouldn't class English as 'foreign', so that rules out Gazza, whom in my opinion was one of the few genuinely world class players to grace Scottish football.

Other than that, for me, only Laudrup could lace Larsson's boots, world-class wise. Nakamura and Moravcik also come into that category. Who else would you suggest?:)

George Best was the best, although he was passed his best(there's that name again).
Yup on natural ability gazza would pip most. Lubo would be my pick from Celts followed by larsson. Laudrup is up there too.
The guy latapy was top drawer too

I suppose Caniggia of Argentina would have get a mention too. He got 50caps when they were one of the best nations

Personally I thought Lubo was a great player and if you include Irish players, that would bring in Robbie Keen who was not too shabby at finishing.

Had the pleasure of seeing Best play, what a player but past his best up here.

As for the Rangers, Gaza truly world class, there were also a couple of Dutch boys who were not bad players.

Also Laudrup was pretty decent.

For those with good memories Dundee also had a decent Italian striker on their books for awhile.

Oh and Frank Sauze.of hibs. excuse spelling.
We were lucky at times as England were out of Europe. But yes all the Dutch lads like van bronkhorst, Newman, de boer oh and big stephan Kloss of Germany in goal. Celtic had majalby, hokijonk and Petrov. Nakamura etc.
Yeah great times in Many ways although it caused financial issues for many clubs

Souness was a fine player, although struggled with playing in Scotland, loved his time in Italy had so much time on the ball.

Well I think this players retaliation on poor Mr Souness was absolutely shocking......

Graham hardly touched the lad.........

The dirty bastard quite obviously scratched Graham's calf........

+1 Robin.

It is without doubt what is sorely lacking in today's Scottish Premiership.

Yeah, I totally agree. Dirty bassa though, but not quite in 'Warlock's' league;) Was it Sampdoria that Souness played for?

Anyway, we've got BROONY:more::D

Yes he played for Sampdoria and in his first season they won the Coppa Italia.

Decent player with a good work ethic. Should do fine

Talk is we may have won the signature of Joe Aribo. I would be surprised if we do, but always hopeful; I think he is a decent player and sensible t'boot. Also more talk on Kenty, although I will believe that when I see it.
Celtic yet to get any over the line but they are interested in a few good uns too including Rekeem Harper who I fancied for us...

Charlie Gilmour possibly heading to Norwich (https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/charlie-gilmour-set-norwich-rangers-16531394)? Could be a good signing for us.

Hardly played for Arsenal, although that's not uncommon in the Premier League, where all the big hitters are very wary of putting their youngsters into situations where they might be out of their depth and make too many errors.
If he does sign he'll be with one player I do rate, and that's Patrick Roberts, who has signed for Norwich on a loan deal.

Looks like both Turnbull and celtic have had a change of heart and the transfer is back on again.
It's an odd one as celtic are not really short of top players there, unless they are selling one.

Over the other side of cuty Rangers look to have Edmunson of Oldham. Had a medical today so hopefully passed and agreed.

Still awaiting the lad Aribo.

I thought we'd bagged him (https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/4387708/celtic-david-turnbull-complete-norwich-move-agreeing-terms/) - (he'd apparently agreed personal terms?) so not sure what's happened, but it does look like he's off to Celtic (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48712448). I don't know how good he is apart from a cursory read of the reports but onto the next one I guess! All good fun this transfer malarky!
