Tried to phone them, automated response, "will try to get problem fixed by midday 17th June" Not that helpful!

That is odd, should boot from CD, might indicate a hardware problem. How about booting from a Linux stick?
Dont have one but checked boot order and cd is first... Said to press tab for the first word. It gives command completions... About a hundred different ones?

Make one, I create one with a Windows machine. Just need a USB stick, say 4GB or bigger, the ISO file and Universal USB Installer http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

May sound obvious, but is the disc clean? I've been caught by this before.
Ive checked the legacy bitcand its enabled... It was booting before from disc. Now it wont

Can happen, I've found that booting from optical disc can be problematic.
Hum... This is odd.. Wont boot any cd. Keeps defaulting to the main ubantu drives

Optical drive failed, SATA cable come off perhaps.
A few weeks ago my desktop machine would not boot from optical drive. Why? I had disconnected the SATA cable. Silly old fool. Took me a little while to suss.
Ok ive got it to boot on disk... It had an extra page of options that were not being changed..had to do it manually

I had a problem with Linux not wanting to reinstall, but Windows would. I installed XP and then found the PC would boot and install from a Linux CD again.
Something serious alas.... Wheres me gun

You think you have problems, and you probably have, just knocked my Rogers Monitor LS3/6 / Export Monitor off a tall stand, no longer immaculate. Repairing now. Some Brummer Teak Stopper, sanding, and re-doing polyurethane finish, I think damage will be imperceptible. Filling done, do the rest tomorrow.

I am having to delete the drives and then gonna reformat them.. Try and get win 7 on for now. Will need to delete reformat to ntfs and convert to mbr i think..... Godamned power company

Guess it was stupid to have the speakers on these tall stands anyway. Now on lower stands, think they sound a bit better like this.
I hope that you will not loose any important data. I did a full backup a few hours ago.

Lost whats on the drive alas. I couldnt get it to backup successfully. It was taking forever. Got the drive deleted . Will need to use diskpart from the windows section to re format and convert. Think its shift f10 to get prompt

So are you having Window and Linux on the same HD? I decided that I would not do this for my main desktop that has masses of info on it. It has all my stuff going back to 1999.
Just ran it.. No drivers no graphics well not right no internet and its detected it as non gen. It was just to get it going first tbh but its not gonna do.

Aye. Got a bottle of Harrogate water lol.. It couldnt have connected to web as it never had password. Must have been something residual in the pc bios that caused it..win 8 originally.

A few weeks ago went through my HD's with the Seagate disk utility, it found a couple with faults, retired them. Is this desktop machine? Usually just a bit easier to swap HD's.
Sanding done, satin polyurethane finish going on now, will find out soon if my repairs are acceptable!

No its a laptop Alex...i use it as a desktop though. Pavilion G6. Always been usex with mouse and external keyboard etc. It was writing to hd when it shutdown. I dont use the battery and its always plugged in. Never had a prob b4 in all years ive done this either ..typical

Well, as they say, all hard drives will fail, it's just when. A friends recently failed when power interruption happened.
Later laptops they seem to have generally made it more difficult to get HD's out, having to dismantle to get to them.
Speaker cabinet repair looks pretty good, another light sand down when dry and more polyurethane, and I think that repairs will be virtually imperceptible.

Had a shot of the beta version of the new mint 18.. Looks like it could be good. Just tried on live dvd. Tried to put it on usb but it wouldnt boot. Dunno if its done wrong or just wont boot from the stick.

Installed it on a 16GB Micro SDHC card, desktop machine boots to this OK, everything recognised, Wi-Fi as well, but when I put my wireless password in, it rejects it. Strange.
Hi, yes I got mine to work by redoing it on the stick. I have same problem with wifi password not accepted.. it took it at second attempt via a disc. tis quick on the stick

Yes, should boot quicker from stick than optical drive. As you probably discovered, on stick you can create a persistent file, so that you can store stuff there.
Looks like a bug with the Wi Fi that they will probably sort out.

I don't usually go for Beta versions. Not sure if this one can be updated, or if long term support is provided.
yes long term til 2021. it will be upgradable i think and also from 17.3 as well. I sent in a bug report....full version wont be long.. think they said next month or 2 at most

lol, just formatted the Micro SDHC card that it was on! It looked good though, look forward to using it. I will update the 17.3 that is on my netbook to it in due course.
It's still amazes me that I can put an operating system on a Micro card, still have masses of space for files, and the card including adapter to SDHC cost just over £3 including postage.

Got a new version of win 7 today..will try it out tonight. Sealed with key or dupposed to be from amazon so if its not then i will get refunded
Ah well it installed but there are no drivers on the pc or they cant be used... Only cd player works, oh and touch pad. Nowt else. No internet, wifi or ethernet. No usb etc. Tried to get drivers from hp. Put them on a disc and tried to install but it just says instantly that there is no suitable drivers.
Ran out of patience.. Pc is fooked.
Will try a run of mint again. Bollocks to windows lol
Failing that i will be the tablet mod, or no mod at all.

Just a thought. Could you use another PC to download the latest BIOS for your particular motherboard and find a way of getting them onto the problem computer?
Thats mint running well at moment. so it(win software) doesnt come with drivers, which is pretty rediculous. its ok saying you need the right ones etc but linux seems to manage ok. usb, wifi, ethernet etc all ok without pissing about.
Not goona stress it with addons so just an external drive and mouse.

If everything works in Linux, that proves the hardware.
wifi didnt and not sure if the ethernet did.. usb didnt either so maybe there was drivers stashed or something in bio area that went phut.

There are quite a lot of drivers in Win 7, I've found it generally better than XP in that respect. Yes, Linux often works well finding drivers for most things.
My main desktop runs XP (keep this quiet!) and has USB 3.0 sockets on it. I have not tried to see if Linux recognises the USB 3.0 hardware, but I expect it will.
Ive no idea. mine has a usb 3 but think they all run usb 2. might be tweakable though if you know what your doing
minty seems to be running well at moment. Might try the usb stick tomorrow and see if it will boot with it with the mint 18
Well lappy is at least working thanks to linux and assistance here. windows wont work, so god knows why.. Probably microsofts post brexit interference ;)
On the win 10 note. My brother went away for a few days holiday. Came back and put the laptop on to download his pics and found win 10 had installed itself in their absence... Hows that for big brother... Switched the pc on and installed it, then off again as a pressie. ;)

Yes, I,m pretty sure it will have gone up leaps and bounds ... Macs will have gone up, although they are still too dear for most. Folk with apple gear really need a windows pc as there is no linux fix sadly. Something i think will break windows a fair bit , along with some other heavily used software like kindle.

I don't use a smart phone, but I believe that most are Android powered, and that is based on Linux. I bet many people don't realise this.
I was given a Mac desktop some years ago, I never even turned it on, because I knew that it was going to cost me £££ for any software I needed, and I'm a mean old b*****d.
Most is..think android has 58% of market although that takes in a number of companies.. Apples ios has 38% i think which for expensive single company is impressive.
50% of people in uk have a tablet...mostly again android and thats again cost rearing its head...lots of cheap tabs out there. May not be very good but they do a job and like the whole market are pretty much all throw away when they go wrong anyway again due to cost.
Ive 2 tablets..1 of each. 2 iphones too plus 2 androids... None new though. Several lappies but again all old..newest is 4/5 years old now i guess.,The others much older and not much use for anything bar browsing..the one i bought to convert to wim 7 ultimate is really for using itues and ripping musuc to my rpi. The others are just there lol
Way hey! Finally go this damn notebook thing to connect wirelessly to the internet! Lent it to a work colleague who tried it at home and pronounced it working fine so I then at least knew it wasn't a fault.
Took an hour on the 'phone with Virgin (who truth be told were actually very good, even calling me back as promised). Turns out the password was not valid for some reason and had to be changed.
The downside is I am now on Windows 10 like it or not, but the tracking my every move aside, it seems to be okay.

Great that it's working, if it was "upgraded" from Windows 7 to Windows 10, perhaps you can roll it back.
It is brand new so came with W10 as standard. Good to be able to ditch the tower case, monitor, keyboard and all the other mucky muck and just have this little thing sat next to me on the couch.

Ah, so probably not possible to roll it back. I hate the idea of Windows 10, but on new machines I have played with it seemed to be fine, apart from the mining of data by Microsoft. If you have a problem with the operating system later, you can always put Windows 7 or something else on. I would keep the old tower etc. just in case! If you do, the laptop will be reliable, Sod's Law.
Yes, I'm keeping the tower it ill just go into storage. Still have my last but one pc. The last one I kicked down the stairs by accident although it was already broken.
Not sure what Microsoft will mine out of my data. I only use the thing for looking at the hi-fi sites and buying or watching stuff on amazon. Not exactly gripping reading for the Feds.
Need to get an external DVD drive for it though so I can still play my wargames if the fancy takes me.

I have never really been interested in computer games, but could you not put them on a memory stick, or store them on the hard drive?
They are on disc so I would have to get them onto the hard drive. External drives are very inexpensive though.

Some seem to come with two USB plugs, so that it takes the power from two USB ports.
Ive got a couple of big self powered lg units doing nowt now if you want to try one martin. They are superb units but fairly large and heavy.. Plug n play though. You cant buy these now unless you find a second hand one.best ive used.
Thanks Grant but I can get one of Amazon for less than it would cost to ship yours to me. Not in any desperate hurry as I rarely play the games.

I was going to check today to see if it was out, but forgot!

I tried Rufus a while ago, had some problems, can't remember what they were!
Universal USB installer formats the stick drive if you want it to.
Maybe I used that for everything.. this rufus is still formatting etc... hope I dont need to do it again. Last one was quite quick. its a much bigger stick though...
I tried a normal format but is was not getting written as bootable

Installed OK, boots OK, but still has the same problem as the Beta, won't recognise Wi Fi password.
Thought they would have fixed that.... I had same trouble so what im doing may be pointless

Hmmm, that's not good, booted on both my machines, but just that Wi Fi password problem. My desktop is connected using Wi Fi as it's a long way from the router.
Perhaps try UUI to install 18, but even if it boots, you may still have the Wi Fi problem.

Well, the mug of tea did the trick, Mint 18 is now working with the Wi Fi.
There is a box in to which one enters the Wi Fi password, and there is an icon just at the end of the box, click on it and select the other option.
Then a dialogue box comes up asking for a "keyring", choose any password, confirm it, then the Wi Fi should work.
This keyring thing was in some old versions of Mint, seems to re-appeared in 18.
I'm using Mate.
Ive got mate test 4 on a key. I will try it tomorrow. it only worked on ethernet. may cure it. might reinstall the cinnamon one too using universal ... must have been good tea.;)

My use of the word "keyring" is referring to only a password that has to be entered to use Wi Fi, it's not the Wi Fi password that's supplied by the Internet Service Provider, or the actual USB memory stick.

Dont seem to be getting same. I get the wifi box and there is an icon of 2 people, but you get 3 options, none of which give that with mine. Godamned stupid idea lol.

Yes it's working on that pen, but wouldn't start on the Philips one, both done same way with universal usb. Must blue something about it that won't let it.
iPad I had to return to a new unit so lost everything. This backed up so may get info back. Seems to be working now

Yes, sometimes a particular USB stick is not suitable for booting from, even though it works fine otherwise. I don't know why.
Seems that's it... I will try and find another one for switching that will work. iPad is now working again. Software must have got corrupted somehow, so had to do a fresh new iPad install. Some stuff was lost, although it's mostly recoverable with time. Just glad it's not, or doesn't seem to be hardware this time.

Just recovered from a PC attack. My browser was hijacked. I was on Google News and clicked a link to a news item, then the page I'd reached kept opening new tabs and replicating itself continually. Cleaning tools spyware/virus scanners wouldn't function. I restarted in safe mode and did a system restore, followed by a full spyware/virus scan and file cleaning, which now all worked. Seems OK now. I really didn't feel like reinstalling Windows at the moment.

Malwarebytes are at the cutting edge of stopping these things, as are Win Patrol, especially WP for ransomware. They are stopping the lifetime licences soon so if you want one then be quick. Dont currently need it on this as Im on lynux but my other pc is protected by both and Im getting ransomware soon.

The AVG Linkscanner (not the A/V suite) catches bad stuff too.
I think the problem is the Maxthon Browser I'm using being a bit out of date and having vulnerabilities.

In fact, I used to use both Firefox and Pale Moon, but mainly Pale Moon now, because about a month ago Firefox started going very slow, pages taking ages to load.
I don't know why. Tried various things including re-install.

This would annoy me, but you seem to be happy to re-install. I have so many programs it would tale me a week!
I still do a complete clone of the c drive, but now twice a week.

In fact, I used to use both Firefox and Pale Moon, but mainly Pale Moon now, because about a month ago Firefox started going very slow, pages taking ages to load.
I don't know why. Tried various things including re-install.
Doh! I cleared the Firefox cache, seems to have improved matters, thought that I tried that before. Pale Moon is still faster though.

A few more bits of software to install and a few tweaks and it'll be as I want it! :)
W7 is nice and smooth when newly installed.

Now you have a fresh Win 7 it would be an ideal time to upgrade to Win 10 while it is still free :)

Not a chance. Windows 10 is horrible. As are W8.0 and W8.1. I have 8.1 on another PC and I'm not impressed. I've used 10 many times too. W7 is perfectly usable until 2020 (and probably after). I stuck with XP as long as I could. Vista was hopeless. W7 is very user friendly (for me anyway).

I am surprised that anyone should have problems with W8.1. Once I had set it up according to my own preference in start up screen, and I installed Classic Start Menu, I found W8.1 far more usable compared to W7. The only thing I really miss in W8.1 are the networking options from XP and W7 such as the ad hoc mode. The lack of that has made setting up my SB Touch a lot more difficult and long winded.

I'm going to hook up my W8.1 PC soon and let it upgrade itself to W10. Today is the last day of the free upgrade.
I don't like either much, but it may as well have the latest O/S.
Now then. Where's my printer installation disc? Not done that yet.
My bro got his done behind his back lol. He likes it up to a point. Things are kinda in non intuitive places, but such is the horrors of a new operating system i suppose. It was usable

Been downloading preparatory MS updates and W10 for half the day. I thought I was more or less at the install stage, but it's just started downloading more stuff! :rolleyes:
depends on how fast the BB is performing across the board, as after a while of big files the bandwidth can narrow. youve started so It'll finish I guess:)
I put W10 on 4 machines in the last 24 hours, all perfect, but I always do a 'clean' install, which is without a doubt the way to do it. You can also turn off all the privacy features some folk seem to be worried about.
I still struggle to understand why people bloat out the O\S with third party so called A\V software, you really don't need it with a properly functioning W10 install. I have not had a software or hardware issue with my personal computer's for many, many years . . . what do you guys do on your machines? ;)

Windows 10 seems to be working OK. It even retained all my third party software and files (I think). Altogether, with various preparatory downloads and W10 stuff, which played tricks on me (had to be a bit canny here and there), it took around 12 hours including the installation, which was a bloody sight slower than a fresh install. The Windows 7 reinstall I did yesterday on another PC took about an hour.
St least most of bugs should be out of it now

We shall see. I restarted it and a command prompt box came up briefly and disappeared before I could see what that was about. Restarted again a couple of times and it booted normally.

Sure enough, 18.7gb of 'windows.old' folder. No mention of that being retained in the blurb they give you on W10. On PCs with smaller hard drives that amount of space could have been critical. No doubt the fact that there'd not be enough overall drive space would have been flagged prior to trying to upgrade, but I wonder how many 'upgradees' still have this file hogging space on their computers? I'll delete it once I'm sure W10 is stable and working totally to my satisfaction.
Aye, its so you can roll back.. You,ll need to select admin privilages to delete it.
Had W10 laptop for a month now and no issues although I don't attempt anything complex. Big tower case, external speakers, keyboard etc all now banished to storage which gets rid of a lot of clutter. The old PC was so noisy, didn't realise how bad it was until I got rid. This Lenovo thing is completely silent, very quick to boot up, it seems pretty good value for £140 delivered.

Yes, very wise to back it up, sod's law if one does, everything will go OK in the upgrade.
It contains everything that was on pc b4 you upgraded including your files. If something has not been transferred you can look for it in there and manually reinstate it

My documents are not in 'windows.old' either that I can see. Not a big deal as I saved them. there wasn't a lot anyway and nothing too important.

I keep nothing on desktop apart from recycle bin and the occasional sticky note.
I'm not going to worry about it. I'll give it a few days and then delete the old file.
I did have box coming up telling me to select apps each time I booted. Seems it didn't like me choosing Chrome as default browser. I set all apps to windows defaults and changed settings so I don't keep getting app notifications. OK now.
Seems to be the week for it .... My win 7 pc wouldnt recognise my sony ereader at all. While looking as to why and thinking it just needed a sony driver, i ended up getting 219 updates from microsoft :doh: took all day then wouldnt restart saying bootmanager was missing... F@@kin' microsoft!:steam:
Anyhoo, after plugging away ive got it to boot and, hey, it reccognises the ereader.... God knows what else its added though...im frightened to look :eek:

I just downloaded a 'live' boot CD of ReactOS to try. Sounds interesting. Could be just the thing for an old PC I've got. Have a Google.

I tried to put framework I think as I needed it and it said it did it but it didnt show and didnt work as zoner wouldnt work, and it wouldnt let me do it again. now thats in. It is looking suspiciously like a win10 by sneak methods. there were what it called security updates... hundreds.. must have been damn insecure lol

Have you seen 'Never 10'? I've got it on my other W7 PC. It doesn't just stop W10 loading, it removes any parts of it.

its finish those and still got 7.... hoping thats it now... although 298 were downloaded and supposedly installed, there are only 198 there, so either 100 of them didnt install or they are hidden.

I have Peppermint 6, I think, on a very old slow Acer netbook, runs better than anything else I tried, but if it would run Mint fast enough, rather have that. It doesn't.
Decided to have a pull at me hard, em, drive :eyebrows: Its a wd scorpio blue 250gb 2.5" 9mm sata hdd. Was thinking of putting in a 500gb ssd. Toshiba 3gb ram laptop, which I like and works well on win7. thought it might speed it up, plus it could do with space as its nearly full, probably the operating system tbh.lol

Good thing is, I believe, that a hybrid works just like an ordinary HD. Using an SSD with XP is not supposed to be good unless various things are done.

Your computer, and mine, will work so fast we won't be able to keep up with them.
The 2.5" hybrid has a 5400 RPM HD, I expect that it will be faster than my existing 7200 RPM 3.5" drive, we shall see.
I often get my bread free, nice bread too. My local baker / delicatessen is a friend, lives in this road, often drops in nice bread, other foods too. Yesterday was bread plus various curries, v nice.
has a decent amount of flash memory so it should go well..
I have a bipra usb to sata adaptor powered, years ago, and never been out of box. I bought it in a sale on amazon by mistake, thinking it was something else ...must have had a skinful lol. May be useful, as I think this is what its for.

Linux is not perfect, nor is Windows, usually W7 has drivers for a lot of hardware. Linux is usually good that way too. But Linux has all sorts of other stuff, like Office etc. Nice that.
usb sockets didnt work for a start...lol... makes life difficult.... its good in a way havint this linux on a fairly fast pc with loads of headroom as it works pretty fast mostly, especially if I kick up the upstairs ethernet system.. even with the tplink sender slowing it I still get 30mb/s speeds, which is a bit faster than the wifi which is usually under 50% and often 35%. i usually forget to switch it on donstairs b4 i go up, and cant be bothered returning...lazy old git that i am.

Never had that before, strange, USB 2.0 has always worked for me without adding additional drivers. 30 mb/s is good, I'm with basic copper wire Talktalk, get close to 20 mb/s, and that's wi fi connected, as my main desktop machine is a long way from the phone master socket and router.
Ive fibre to the street, then old cabling to house. Before I had normal, and it never went above 3.2mb/s and was usually 2.7.... a struggle to say least. We are at very end of the line here before it goes on to another exchange. Also the wires to house are old. Not even sure they are copper tbh.

I suppose I'm lucky, the telephone is probably about 300 yards away, so speed should be good. When I first had Talktalk installed, some 8 years ago, speed was ridiculously slow. TT suggested that it might be because I was a long way from the exchange. I soon put them right on that one!

Don't panic. Mine arrived this morning too, had several partitions, one may have been 25 GB. You need to use something to delete partitions.

I used Seagate DiscWizard. I saved some of the stuff on the HD before deleting partitions and formatting.
Says 8MB NAND Flash on it, just checking that this is correct.

8MB Flash might be right, buffer appears to be 64 MB
Ive cleared it and have 500 gb now... Probably screwed it up. Anyway i will try and clone it... Ive got easeus but dunno if its the best available.
Dunno about flash memory or where to find it.. I didnt save the stuff on it so maybe i should have doh.

Flash memory, it's written on the label! lol. No need to do anything, just use as ordinary HD.
I prefer DiscWizard to Easus, but that's just a personal preference.
I have stuff from the new drive if you ever need it. I shall have a look to what it is.
Should it be optimised for ssd or sector by sector

Don't know, suspect sector by sector. Not cloned to mine yet.
Picked s by s. Its started, but no idea how long it will take. Usb 2 should managed it theoretically in 2 hrs, as its dojng about 250mb, but i will believe that when i see it

I have 191 GB to do, will probably take about 25 min USB 3.0 or SATA
Was initially hopeful as it did 5% in 6 mins, but its still 5% doh. Ive taken all the sleep functions off so it can just run and see later.
Let me know if , or should say when yours is up.

I tried several cloning software offerings, some seemed very slow. Usually use DiscWizard (free), sometimes R-Drive, paid for.
Mine been copying 11 minutes, says 12 Min to go, that's about what I would expect.
At the end I will then boot (try!) from the new SSHD. Will time it too, see if it;s quicker that the conventional HD. Apparently, it takes a few boots to learn what to use to the flash memory for.
Done 15% here lol. Usb3 would have been better but i dont have it. Ive copied the d partition as well, which i may not have needed tbh.

Cloning completed a while ago.
Blimey, second boot is 50% quicker than with fast(ish) 7200 RPM HD.
Typing this on the SSHS powered computer now.

Third boot is about the same time, still quick though at half the original HD boot time.
Also noticed that Firefox, Outlook 2007, etc. etc are much snappier now.

Lol... Aye. Approaching 50 now. Another 2 hrs i reckon anyways....if it works well i have another laptop i might do it on. Its a fujitu drive, not sure the size but is sata.

If the 2.5" 5400 RPM SSHD is faster than my 3.5" 7200 RPM HD, the SSHD should be much faster than 2.5" HD's
