Ah, 32 bit and 64 bit probably, answering my own question.

Installed it on a memory stick. Booted my netbook from it, took ages, much longer than Mint on stick. Once booted, did not really like the look of it, and it runs horribly, irritatingly slow. Could just be my hardware, but Mint runs fine.

mmnn... I may just give it a bye then .... My hardware is worse than yours... May try it on my modern-ish i5 pc.. might be an interesting trial.
Been adding some software to the win 7 one including malwarebytes.. found 70+ malware and it was only started... must have came with the firefox download I think.. I made a mistake there, but its all been removed and cleaned..hate those parasites :steam: seems to be that everything is working on it so looks to be safe to delete the huge "old" file and regain my Hdd :)

Have you not got a free external USB hard drive to dump stuff on? I have several for these purposes. My main desktop machine is about 8 years old, but I have put a USB 3.0 card in it, very useful for transferring large amounts of stuff to a USB 3.0 external drive.

I took a download of firefox first and I never checked it out properly, and that is where it came from I think. a few odd programs appeared too. so I deleted them with wise, and then downloaded MWB premium as I have several licences... it found 73, including 3 red malwares... it terminated them lol. my fault really; should have been more careful. W updates are off now too... popped jriver on too and that side is all working fine so looks like all drivers are ok... video may be compromised as I saw something re that, but I dont really use pc's for that anyways so not bothered. Musak and browsing really, and its a back-up at moment anyways. the other 1 on linux is pretty good and running well.. the really old one struggles a bit but manages on the lxe version.. it cant really handle mint very well.

In the past I have used Peppermint for low powered machines, not quite as user friendly as Mint, but not bad:

I have it in the bedroom connected to a little Denon Ceol via the Ceol's DAC and have been using it to connect to a NAS where my music is stored and internet.
Mint was the first linux I tried and it was fine but haven't used it in maybe 2 years, Zorin is also fine, I just like trying different things.

Your Lenovo spec is far better than my netbook (1 GHZ processor 1MB RAM), found Zorin looks quite nice, but not as versatile as Mint.

Well, microsoft have been at it again, overriding update determinations and adding win 10 stuff secretly...again. Had enough of them tbh. I have determined to look in to installing a win 7 system with no updates as a back up and also putting a linux system in. dont think linux will coexist with win 8 but could be wrong..I know they use different boot systems etc.
anyone got any experiences re this. its a decent lappy with good specs.

On my Del laptop I have Win 8.1 and Mint 17.3, no problems, very rarely boot into Win 8.1 though.

not really. It gets used mostly for general tbh. a bit of everything really, but win 8.1 is being manipulated by microsoft to make you go for updates that will install win 10. I wont be forced into taking spyware :)
a 64 bit edition of mint 17.3 is being downloaded. Whether it will be happy booting from dvd I will see. I have a partition of 140 gig awaiting it.
uefi can cause problems I hear, but am ready to try and solve that if needed

Just go into 'computer' and it shows up in 'C' on W7 if I recall.
I thought it did too, but I may have had "show hidden files" ticked. Might be something to do with it.
To remove the windows files in it you need to open the disk cleanup with admin privilages, or all it shows is the other files .. Mine was up near 50 gig ..its gone now

I'm pretty sure I just deleted it from 'C' last couple of times. I've not used disk cleanup for it.

A thought crosses my mind about the spying potential of W10. Where will security minded business users stand? Will there be a Windows release for them that specifically assures no spying or intrusion?

I did my weekly clone of my main PC's hard drive a couple of days ago. This is my way of backing up. Around 200 GB, takes a bit over 30 min. Next clone I do on a different drive so that at any time I have the original and two clones.

Well, after cocking everything up last night(still dunno why) Ive got mint 17.3 running on my old(lol) once upon a time win 8.1 laptop. running well too. Not having windows will be a blow for some stuff but guess I can cope... microsoft were making win 8 so difficult to stay away from win 10 its amazing they get away with it tbh.
been setting up my applications; long road but the basics are up and running. I have the win 7 old one so may be able to use that for the windows stuff... all in, it is deffo better than poxy microsoft... I would encourage everyone to think about it ;)

That's one thing about Tiddles, although a great big cat, she rarely made a mess, and was very careful, never really damaged anything in the house. Many years ago a previous cat found to it's delight, two gigantic scratching posts, a pair of ESL63's, I was not pleased to say the least.

Great that you have an alternative to Windoze.
I just clone the HD to an external HD using Seagate Diskwizard, either by USB 3.0 or SATA connection.

Sorry, when I mentioned backup, I was referring to my main desktop machine that is Windoze. Yes, it's everything on the backup. If the internal HD was trashed, I could fit the backup in the machine and it would boot,
Don't know about Amazon video prime, I'm ignorant here, but would have thought it should be compatible with Linux. If it's a browser problem, plenty of them to choose from, Opera, Pale Moon, etc. etc.
There is antivirus for Linux, Clam, most stuff does not affect Linux, but it might catch something that did not affect you, but you might inadvertently pass on to a Windows user.

Linux does not suffer the same paranoia as the other, but if you want to back up Linux
you only need to copy and paste your Home folder to a external drive.
There is absolutely no need to back up the file system.
If and when mint provide a new version the easiest way is to upgrade
and there is ability for this in the updates folder. The upgrade takes about 5 mins
All of your previous home folder contents remain intact.
To do a back up of , go to your Home folder, click on file then properties, you will be able to see
how much space your Documents/ Downloads/Videos/Pictures etc folders occupy.
Then using an external drive open it and create a folder called say home backup , go back to your
Home folder that you need to copy Edit /select all which should highlight all of your home folder contents
then edit copy, and paste into your external drive home backup folder.
It will take a 30 mins or so to copy.
Over about 12 years , I have done about 3 such back ups.

Highly unlikely as the file systems are entirely different, including the browser software that is written for Linux
and is now so specialised there are versions of browser software specific to say Linux Mint.
Unlike the other that demands constant attention, and high monetary gifting in the form of anti virus software.
My advice would be to leave the room if contemplating turning it on. :)
Yes you can download and run Clam its in software manager, it does a good job., but invariably finds nothing.

The 63's are on stands! Didn't stop the cat though, fortunately, under the the cloth "socks" if expanded steel, so only the cloth was damaged. A new pair of "socks" were purchased from Quad, could only supply black, original were brown.

Ok, cheers all... Been exploring how you format and image micro sd cards etc for my RPI... not getting very far so far lol.... seems to be some differing opinions.. in windows you used an sd formatter, and then win disc 32 .....any pi users doing it on mint???

I know nothing about RPI... May be irrelevant, but G-parted does lots of different file formats, and not sure, but I think there is a formatting tool in Mint.

Install Wine through Program manager, just download the windows program in the normal way, say to the desktop. Right click on the windows program, and select open with Wine.

I must have another bash at working with Linux. I still have several recent bootable CDs with the install option including Mint (which I can update). Windows 7 is only good for another 4 years and having used W8.1 & W10 and not been impressed and with the invasive/intrusive nature of Microsoft's newer operating systems, I doubt I'll carry on using them. Means I'll have to learn more about finding my way around Linux.
I wonder if there are any Windows XP 'survivalists' out there? There must be ways of perpetuating its usability. I liked XP.

Certainly. Business users will not tolerate a Microsoft 'oversight', so maybe they will be offered a Windows O/S option that has (supposedly) no monitoring and information storing and analysis and use (much as Google do). The Yanks are just so obsessed with control and information. It's their national disease!!
I'm selling my W8.1 PC, as I just do not want further involvement with Microsoft (once W7 dies), let alone want to 'upgrade' to W10. Which I've used many times on my grand daughter's laptop.
I'll have a look around for an older PC of decent spec and try some Linux distros again, just as a project to teach myself how to use Linux properly.

Works great on a win 8 pc. I wiped the pc and put mint 17.3 on... No probs and secure..no microsoft screwing either

Probably why I haven't found it, I only really use on a netbook or laptop, no scroll wheel.
always use a mouse on my laptops... I hate those damned touchpads :D even managed to get kindle working on wine; a bit iffy at times but its working(had to use a couple of researched tips though.

Just installed Peppermint 6 on my ancient Acer Apire One netbook, which has only an 8GB solid state hard drive.
Everything works! eg. both memory card slots, Wi Fi, sound, and webcam, without any tweaking.
Skype installed and that works too.

On the Aspire One previously was Peppermint 3 (I thought it was 5, but was wrong), I do remember that a bit of tweaking was required to get camera and memory card slots working. obviously, Peppermint 6 is better in this case.

It's under 700 MB, so should be OK on a CD, My Aspire One does not have an optical drive, so installed it on a USB stick using Universal USB Installer.
Just a warning, Peppermint is a bit basic in look, I do prefer the look of Mint, but Peppermint is likely to run faster on an old machine.
Popped it on a dvd...im running out of them rapidly lol... theyve been lying around for years so good to get rid.... I will try it and see how it manages.... handy to have a few distros...cheers

I bought a 'plug & play' external CD/DVD drive for my little Acer. Very handy.
(it has to be 'plug & play' obviously, as the others come with drivers on disc -------- which you can't play! :D)

I have used an ordinary 5" desktop optical drive and an IDE to USB lead with the Acer, but it's a bit of a bother. I did buy a USB external optical drive, but it was unreliable. Generally put Linux on a stick to test and then install.

I think that the new processors may work with Linux, not absolutely sure though.

In synaptic or software manager, see if you have hpcups installed, as well as hplip
What model HP Printer is it ?
Normally you would find the printer will install automatically, occasionally though
it can pay to do this via Administration/ printers to see if the ppd info is listed.
if it is not listed in available printers, try model numbers that are close.
Also the generic printer file usually works with really troublesome models.
Forums too can be a great source for solving individual difficult printer types.
I have a Samsung printer and it for the first year or two required a lengthy
process of installing the manufacturers available linux file , but now
installs straight away.
There are always updates to cups ( common unix printing system ) being done
and this one area where Apple have cooperated very well with Linux.

My HP ancient HP Laserjet 6L works OK in Mint, I think installation was easy, but it was a while ago. My also ancient Canon separate scanner also worked. I have to admit that my ability to use of the terminal is very limited, I hate using it.
If you are stuck with something, perhaps install Teamviewer (or something similar) and then you could easily receive help from others if necessary.
PS. Typing this lying on bed using netbook with Mint, reason, aching leg from tripping over Dalesford D on floor, injured shin quite nastily, nothing broken, just blood and bruised. Perhaps we could start another thread on injuries caused by Hi Fi
Ive brought it downstairs to try on the mint one down here in case its something to do with it(pc upstairs) being a win 8 bios originally. Unlikely..... Was considering wiping this one and trying win 7 then put mint back as a dual boot. Could be fun.. Obviously i cant just overright with win 7 so i take it i will have to use a live iso disc of mint to use gparted to reformat disc to 1 ntfc drive ?

I think you might find, but not sure, that w7 might format the Mint installation.
Have you got G-parted on a separate disc? It's quite useful like this.

Tried w7 but it found the partition and format wrong.. I made a gparted disc on cd last night..dunno if i did it right yet but could use a live 17.3 i think too...
Gonna try the printer first just to see.. I tried backing up yesterday but it took all day and had to cancel it seen molases move faster in winter time:D

I only use SATA or USB 3.0 for backup, USB 2.0 is too slow and frustrating.
Was on usb2. Think it may have been program... Ive done huge win 8 clones in an hr. This was only 35 gig

Some programs are slow, I use Seagate Discwizard, but USB 2.0 is going to be slow.
Tried printer on this one and it comes up with same error.... Hp site says mint has all nessessary drivers etc for it to plug n play basically but it doesnt.. Tbh this is typical hp... They are bloody useless lol

What model printer is it? As Chris said, sometimes a driver from a different printer works.
I even had a problem in windows with a HP Laserjet 6L Pro, which requires a different driver to the 6L, found another printer driver that worked OK.

My HP ancient HP Laserjet 6L works OK in Mint, I think installation was easy, but it was a while ago. My also ancient Canon separate scanner also worked. I have to admit that my ability to use of the terminal is very limited, I hate using it.
If you are stuck with something, perhaps install Teamviewer (or something similar) and then you could easily receive help from others if necessary.
PS. Typing this lying on bed using netbook with Mint, reason, aching leg from tripping over Dalesford D on floor, injured shin quite nastily, nothing broken, just blood and bruised. Perhaps we could start another thread on injuries caused by Hi Fi

I guess this is the right place to post this one - 4 days ago my dog knocked a cup of coffee straight across the laptop and 20 mins later a burning smell forced a quick shutdown but restarting has been a no show. Took it apart dried everything out but still no joy. Death to laptop. So here i sit now with £300 lighter in the pocket but internet access is back :)
Note to self , never put your coffee or any drink near a computer again. One expensive cuppa :(

Hi chris. I installed that. re started and got the hp applet in it I tried to print test page. it came up that a plugin or driver was missing. it started me to install it from hp but after it started it came up with
/home/struth/.hplip/hplip-3.15.2-plugin.run file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered
...over lol.

gave that a bash but it says checkum error and it still needs a binary driver which it cant download from hp for some reason called checksum error lol catch 22 lol..works fine on the windows 7 pc i set up. maybe not a goer in lunux.. keeps saying something about colour management too... its a B&W laser, unless its re converting colour to b and w. dunno where the bloody software is; I never usually lose software

Yeah trying to sort out drivers is tedious and might just be a waste of time
Some kit just dont work with Linux I blame the manufacturers why cant they just make a printer that well erm prints what is sent to it rather than rely on software on the computer that is asking it to print to sort out its quirks
Who would make say a DAC that would only work with certain CD Players ?
The Linux market is growing I dont get why manufacturers cant make kit that will just work with it

Very nice, they are usually robust. I have a similar one here belonging to a friend's son. The BIOS is password protected and he's forgotten the password. I'll have to get round to try and sort it.
What operating system are you going to put on yours?
Probably win 7 if i can get it to boot from cd. Then maybe dual it with mint. I will have a play with it first and see how it performs with vista first though. Nice to have a spare, spare, spare lol

I read up about the password thing, it involves getting in to the laptop and shorting a couple of pins on a chip. It's not the usual BIOS reset procedure though.

Actually, looks interesting.
Tosh put in an appearance eventually.. Parcelforce at their worst.... Wifi didnt work..couldnt make it work either...vista is bad enough without it being badly installed.
It now has win 7 on and its working fine. Not a mark on it really so pleased enough for 35 quid

My cheapo (£19) desktop has arrived along with the Chromixium Linux disro on CD. The computer looks in nice nick. I'll try it out later, if I have time. Still up to my eyebrows decorating :rolleyes:.

I may soon be getting back a PC I gave to a mate a couple of years ago which will of course have its hard drive reformatted. IIRC it's a Dell Pentium 4 with about 50G hard drive, 1G RAM and 1.5GHz processor. Just looking for a bit of advice as to which windows operating system would be best for it? Too old and primitive for W10? I have a slightly older, lesser still PC running W7 OK though..... and XP is no longer supported :scratch:
Linux would probably be best but it should just about run win 7 Linux mint 17.3 is what I am running at moment. nice program if you dont NEED windows.

Quite impressed with this toshiba on ultimate... Most things work ...only probs are my zoner 1i photo app. It says it needs win platform but win platform Says it cant install so its catch 22 there...a!yways i got acdsee photo editor 6 up and running so thats something.. The disc that you have, I think, may have 64 bit version on it as well as the 32 bit. It's a long time since I installed 64 bit, with my oldish hardware, 64 always ran slow.

Sometimes I notice that when running a Windows program in Linux using Wine, the text is slightly smaller than when running in Windows. It's OK though.
Strangely, I never used the backup tool in Mint, not even seen it or looked for it.

Working this time, may have miss-typed. Not really like Belarc though.
The back up failed ..think the pc must have gone to sleep and the program stopped...dunno. Ive deleted all the back up bar one folder that wont delete.. Thats the slowest back up system there is by way.. Windows can do 500gig in an hr or so.

Were you backing up to the PC's own drive or to external drive? If external USB 2.0 drive, that will be a bottleneck, as I'm sure that you are aware.
The only PC that I back up is my main one with a USB 3.0 card in it. Also has External SATA connection, and a second internal hardrive, so backup is very easy and fast.

Usb3 to ext hdd. Same as i would do with a windows one. No point in backing up to same drive as it would be getting erased. Just these linux back up programs seem very slow. Windows own hidden back up is very good tbh as is easeus etc.

Hmm, None of my portable computers have USB 3.0, so no experience of that. It will need someone to advise, or a Google!

Just fired up my 19 quid PC for the first time. Using it to do this. All seems to work fine so far. I've booted from a Linux Mint 17 disc. Not installed any O/S at the moment. I'll try the new Linux 'Chromixium' shortly.
17.3 is pretty good Geoff. Runs much quicker on hd of course. Not had any probs so far bar with my printer but apparently these lader printers are notorious for problems.

What I have not done and think it would be good, is to have two hard drives in a machine one for Mint and one for Windows. I like to keep only one operating system on a drive. Then just choose at boot which operating system to use.
My main (and old) desktop has the two drives inside, but I just backup (clone) on to the second one. I also (as mentioned previously) backup (clone) to a USB 3.0 drive.

Internet is playing up like mad today, it's usually OK most of the time. Keeps dropping out completely. Phone line is noisy too.
All house connections are sound. Must be something outside. Maybe yesterday's rain got in 'the works'! :)
Mine was doing that last night... Seems ok now. We used to get a similar thing when it rained b4 they fitted a new street box system to accommodate the fibre to street system. Phone is much clearer too

Just swapped them around. No difference.
Had this noise problem a few times even before we had broadband. It's been on and off for years.

A neighbour kindly offered me his desktop pc from 2003, I politely refused, but said that it might be worth trying Linux on it.
On arrival, machine would not even show BIOS, changed the cmos battery and that worked. It dd not have the facility to boot from USB, so put a Mint 17.3 DVD in and machine booted, installed Mint, and to my surprise, everything works. YouTube is a bit jumpy, but so what.
Owner is collecting tonight, we'll see what he thinks of it.

Might it be worth trying VSL (Very Small Linux) or Puppy Linux on it? They are suited to old PCs.

Thanks, I've tried VSL and Puppy Linux, admittedly a little while ago, didn't really get on with them, went to Peppermint Linux, thought this better, but of course needs a bit more resources.

At last. After weeks, even months of internet service drop outs and noisy phones lines, it seems sorted. BT's Openreach engineer popped by yesterday and vetted my phone landline connections indoors and outside. The problem was external and has apparently been dealt with. I'd figured that was likely 'cos things got worse each time it rained. Fingers crossed, all will be well now. I'll find out next time there's a downpour. :)

Great that it's fixed, and I'm assuming, no charge to you.
My Talktalk internet slows down sometimes at peak times, worse than it used to be, pages not loading, or taking ages to do so. Talktalk even sent us an email admitting this, and that they are speeding things up, though I see little evidence of this.

Yes. Seems to be still OK after last night's rain.
The repeated loss of service, often when halfway through doing something on an interactive page was very frustrating.

The neighbour that I put Mint on for (very old machine), has not come back to me, so I suppose that it's working well for him. Demonstrating his machine here, he was impressed that with just the Mint installation, most things were already there to use, eg. Libre Office, Firefox, VLC Player etc.
Hi Alex.. Overall fairly pleased with it.. Some things could be better like printer integration. Wine seems bordering on pointless for most programs ive tried. Would be good if more things like itunes etc worked on it but these things are outweighed by the easy use and security linux provides. Ive got the win7 which does much of the other stuff i need.. Cannot get the platform to go on which stops a number of programs running. But on 7 ive got itunes and printer etc so between the 2 ive got 98% of what i had.. Can easily move stuff around via dropbox and even firefox itself.
I dont have microsoft screwing with my machines either, and as i mostly use the linux one no virus programs etc

So, seems useful, something you will probably find, is that it's more reliable than Windows, and does not seem to slow down as the installation gets old.

Forgot to say. No charge from BT for the remedial work. The fault was not at my end of the line. The visiting engineer was a really nice bloke too.

I had to look up the other week, Android is based on Linux, most people do not realize this.

Inevitable I suppose. The broadband is dropping out constantly and the landline is extremely noisy again. It only took a bit of rain to set it all off once more. BT's Openreach vetted everything here last week and claimed to have cured a fault on their outside equipment. Not properly evidently. Bugger!!

Yes. I've considered doing that. I've got my mini digital recorder handy right now. I have a call to make later and will try it.
Not good Geoff... I had that problem for over 10 years b4 they replaced the box on street and fitted new one in a waterproofed concrete casing. Was same problem when it rained a lot(and it does that here all the time lol)

There have been problems here for many years. They've sorted it in the past, but it comes back. Seems relatively OK right now. Couldn't use the internet at all earlier. I phoned the SP helpline and the girl at the other end was amazed how much noise was on the line.

Internet & phone now properly sorted apparently. A further investigation by Openreach found a cable break at a junction box a couple of hundred yards from the house. This had been causing the intermittent signal and noise. The problem must have existed for years as this line has played up for a long time. Seems fine now even after a fair bit of rain.

Computers are weird. My regular PC had been getting steadily slower and the fan was constantly spinning noisily. I figured it might be dusty and took the case off. There wasn't really a great deal of dust or fluff, but I blasted everything clean with a compressed air aerosol anyway and bingo! Back to normal. Quick again and very little fan noise.
Just bought one of those notebook things - like a little laptop - but can't get it to connect to my wi fi. It wants the code which is on the back of yhe router but there are all sorts of codes on the back and more than one virgin media witeless in range. I have no idea which code to use on which vm. Tried a few combos but no joy. Anyone know how you know which network to use and which code to input?

This shows their different boxes and where to fond your SSID. THE PASSWORD will likely be a mix of letters and numbers and be 10 digits
I have the ssid but it is just a number. No letters. But now the damn thing is not giving me any network options to select. Thete were about six before.
Ssid will start virgin. Then some numbers etc. Your password or code is usually a mix of letters and numbers 10 usually. If you cannot decide which your on is switch it off and rescan for sidd s. Then put your on and await it coming on. You will know which is yours then

There are two virgin options. Tried the ssid on both and it won't have it. The ssid is 8 numbers and no letters.
remember its case sensitive for pass key. some use 8. most Ive used are 10. usually a mix of .... have you ever had it changed at some point?

The number has virgin media in front but I have tried that with the number on both options and neither works. My phone works on it okay.
what is the netbook and what operating system martin?
Lenovo with windows ten.
Turned the router off and back on but now it is back to not seeing any networks at all. Is thre a way to manually scan for them?

Older netbooks like mine might have a switch to turn Wi Fi on and off. I've been caught by this before.
If its a new pc you should have a number to call... never used win 10.... sounds like it might be a security encryton error... wep1 wep2 etc.. you deffo got the right virgin(your phone will tell you which one its connected to) there should be a troubleshooter for wifi connection on the pc I would imagine... if you have a ethernet cable, then try that if pc has a socket. straight from router..it connects ok then you know its either security for driver for the wifi card
No socket for a cable. The computer is brand new. I rrstarted and got the neteork options back. Trying again.

Try clicking on the wireless symbol on the bottom taskbar (next to battery indicator). Click on network settings and make sure wifi is selected. Also check if flight mode is switched. Mine was and had to turn it off.

Flight mode is off. Wireless is connected. How do I see on my phone which network it is using?
Tried both virgin networks that come up several times now with no joy. Either the ssid is not the password or something else is wrong.
On the back of the router there is also a 'pass' which is all letters and a 'pin' which is all numbers. What are they for?
settings and wifi I think. tap on it and is should say which its connected to. different phones are slightly different but it will be fairly obvious. wont tell the pass code though
I tried that already it just shows various vm networks but not the one it is using.
They usually say wifi. then vmxxx... etc touching that usually tells you the full name.... ah well worth a shot... Still think its maybe either a encryption problem or a driver is wrong. as its new I would phone the helpline for lenovo or your provider, virgin who should get you going. As I say I have no idea if win 10 has any fancy changes up its kilt in that direction...you may be using wep1, and win 10 only accepts wep2 for instance?
there should be a connection troubleshooter in the pc somewhere. ethier in networks or connect to internet sections of contol panel etc

Try right clicking the wifi symbol and clicking on troubleshoot problems. If you've tried the ID on the router and it's not working what message comes up when you type in the ssid?
No way i'm phoning some helpline . They are the worst thing ever.
The computer wants a 'network security code' and none of the options on the back of the router are called thay. It would help if I knew I was inputting the right code.
that is the code you put in your phone. If you dont know it then You need to connect to your router from a computer that is already on your network. Often you can get into your router by going to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 on many brands of router. Some routers have a config utility like Apple's Airport. Then, you need to go into the wireless settings and note the SSID and WEP or WPA key and then go into the wireless settings and choose that SSID and click connect. If security is enabled on your network, enter your WEP or WPA key. think it will be second one 192.168.1.1.. type that into a browser, alas it will be your phone unless you have another pc
it will likely ask for an admin password found on back of router.

is it a superhub martin? if so then if you havent changed them then the username and password will be the standard ones for virgin..... admin and changeme

Sorry, been away. Decided to treat the problem with Guiness and Funkadelic at volume.
So i'll try the password instead and see what happens.
If you put 192.168.1.1 into a browser you should get your router up on screen.. entering admin as user name and changeme as password should get you access to the settings and will tell you the ssid and password for you.. enter them into the wifi setup and hopefully bingo
you will need to use another pc or something connected to your router for it to work. if the " 1.1" at end doesnt work try "0.1"
I dunno how you guys can be arsed pissing about with phones for the Internet... I *need* a proper keyboard (for my big fingers) and a decent-sized screen in front of me, or I'm simply not interested :nono:

Yes it is a lap top I am trying to connect, but the 'phone is handy if you need to access the internet whilst out and about. I refuse to carry a laptop or tablet in a man bag as it just looks tragic. And I have little girly fingers not Cumberland sausages so I don't have any trouble with the typing. :)
Anyway new information has now come to light. The SSID is the network number not the password and is the one I need to select when choosing which network to link to.
The password to be entered is the one which is all lower case letters, cunningly identified as 'Pass' on the router.
So no wonder I was getting no joy last night.
So will have another go when I get home tonight.
Failing that will have to call Virgin on Saturday. (note that is Virgin the company, not a virgin...)

Martin the SSID is your network routers 'service set identifier' or in simple terms the name of your router. You select that and then enter the routers password to access the network. If you connect directly to your router via Ethernet cable as Grant suggesrs, you can alter the SSID and password to something you might remember.

I have no idea about Virgin, but most routers have the SSID or network name on the back and that's what you look for when your phone or laptop offers you the WiFi networks available. Select yours and then type the password in. Helps if you step away from the Guinness maybe ;)

Is anyone having problems with YouTube? When I click a video all I get is the loading spinner... I've reset my router a few times and although at first this fixed it but now it's not.
I'm also having problems with Netflix through my DVD/BD player... it loads about a quarter then stops.
Any ideas would be great... It's getting silly now.
