My landline/ internet went of a few days ago for about 10 minutes, I suppose it had nothing to do with Opencircuit (Openreach) digging a hole a few houses away!

I had similar thoughts and actually went outside to see if Openreach might be working nearby. They weren't.

Doing nothing much for the last few days, too hot for me, just relaxing, watching a lot of YouTube. This afternoon noticed an unusual noise in the room, was coming from the PC. It was so hot in the room (over 30 Deg C) that the PC fans had sped up to keep the machine cool. This has never happened before. Stopped watching YouTube and soon after that the fans slowed down to normal.

Conclusion: It’s hot here and the computer fans are doing their job!

WTF is going on?

Last week my laptop woke up one morning and decided that with AoS it couldn't be arsed refreshing the pages for me. Used to be that just leaving a page and going back to it did the trick. Now I have to actually press the 'refresh' button to see what's current, or I've no idea what's read/unread. What next, my live-in arse wiper going on strike? As if life isn't already a battle :(

It dose that frequently, at least once a month. I'll go to power off, and I get options, including 'update and shut down'. I choose this, and when I turn it back on next day it makes me wait several minutes 'configuring Windows updates', whatever that means. The other day it took almost an hour. Every time it does an update something changes in the way it works.

you get pop ups coz you dont have a security program... windows main updates are different. they always screw up some folks pcs at first, and im not keen on it being mine. looks like its been ok on yours. no blue screen, wifi down etc. they have been bringing out fixes so its maybe safe now.
buy a decent security system like malwarebytes.. it'll save you a lot of troubles

I think multifunction machines are sometimes problematic in Linux, I have no problem running my ancient HP Laserjet 6L and ancient Canon scanner in Linux Mint. In fact I had and still have problems running both these devices in Windows 10.

Yes, Mint was the last Linux I tried a couple of years ago. I may try it again on a tiny 32 bit Acer Revo I have sitting doing nothing.

Mint 20 is relatively new, only trouble I had was running Wine, possibly my ignorance, but I didn't have that problem using Mint 19.3.

Mind you early on in 19.3 I had one or two other issues. I suppose it's like anything else, teething problems, sorted out after the release.

My Talktalk contract for standard copper broadband and phone was just ending, was paying £26 per month inclusive, renewal was £29 per month.

Upgrading to standard fibre was £28 per month, so I went with that.

It was done this morning, everything went off for a few minutes, then all OK.

Speed is about the max they quote for this package. 35Mbps down and 10 Mbps up.

Pretty happy, so far!

More likely Everyman, child and dog streaming stuff and the bandwidth at exchange being hit and so the throttling software comes into play and turns down what is available to you, a bit like turning down everyone’s cold water tap at the same time.

Did a reset from Microsoft (not system restore) and all seems OK now, but all documents and images are lost. Fortunately nothing critical and I have stuff saved up to about eight months ago. Been at it for hours and still have software to locate and install, plus all my regular websites. Won't do that again! :rolleyes:

I hardly ever got system restore to work, usually gave a message like "System Restore could not be completed" that's why I started doing the clone business.

There is firmware in the SSD, I am pretty sure I've updated mine at some time (Samsung SSD)

I did wonder, as the third party maintenance software I'd used had worked without problems on HDD equipped W10 PC's. I'll bet that was it.

Just accepted the big Windows update/upgrade (can't remember the number). I notice Outlook is working properly now, pages were loading a bit erratically. I'll have to check out Defender, as I've been temporarily using AVG 'cos Defender developed issues, which may have been sorted now.

Its not that important that Autoplay works. I'm not going to re-install. I'm using Bitdefender free.

I assume you have changed the action under Removable Drive to another action to see if that sticks and if so then change it back to the action you want? Sometimes just toggling an option will force a change.

Of course you can do a reset - with the option of retaining your files/documents etc. But that seems to a massive overstretch for just a small niggle. I suspect the issue you have is a global setting somewhere which is overriding the action in some way.

Got Autoplay working.

First time I used the Registry fix that's here, I did not rename the new term correctly, rectified that, and Autoplay is now working.

Buying a new monitor? I bought my monitor new in 2013, very pleased with it, it's a 24" Benq GL2450H, I have a couple of second hand Del monitors, the Benq is better, but it's probably an unfair comparison because it was bought new.

Depends where you use it, and what you use it for. We have a 49 inch TV which sometimes gets connected to a computer for flims, but it's hardly desk top and can be quite difficult to use for a computer - distance from screen etc.

I prefer larger monitors - but not huge ones. Some older 20 inch TVs might work moderately well as computer displays - though they probably wouldn't have anything like the detail of a modern high res TV or monitor. They would at least probably fit on a desk.

The computer I'm using now has a very clear 27 inch screen. I like the resolution and detail, but I'm not sure that I'd really need a bigger one - not yet, anyway.

Yes, I'd say 24-27" is good for a desktop situation.

I've just been running the Windows 11 compatibility checker on some of my Windows machines. So far only one is not compatible (not surprising as it dates from 2012!). Where they are compatible the notice says it will be a free update. Windows 11 will be rolling out later this year or early 2022 (depends on what circle you are in).

I find the inbuilt Microsoft antivirus and other security software just fine. I can't recall when I was last hit by a virus or other nasty (famous last words :eyebrows: ).

I bought one of those basic machines for my daughter with 32gb storage to do her homework. It's within the Windows 10 minimum spec but it's impossible to update the OS. Whenever you want to do that, you've got to download the latest version into a USB stick on another PC and do a reinstall from boot up. Then I've got to reload all the drivers and software to run teams, print etc which is a right pain.

To stop it running out of storage within a few weeks you've got to disable all updates, and the only way to do that is to set all networks as metered (a neat trick actually which I didn't know at first so it used to fill up quickly with small or failed updates each time I updated it).

The MS Family software is a joke, I've had times where I couldn't log in to any of the children's laptops as the "my parent is here option" never works and it wouldn't pick up permission granted from any other machine or my phone.

When you look online the MS employees try and bat questions away with silly suggestions and if you plug away they just say yeah it's not very good, try buying third party software that works.

Thanks Edward, very kind words. It will be a while yet, may be home before Christmas but not sure. What I can say is how brilliant the NHS and it's amazing staff is, I saw many things while in hospital. I was kept in isolation in the Covid department due to constant infections and the lengths all the staff went to, caring for the patients and their relatives was truly amazing.
I have my Sennheiser HD650 headphones powered by a great little amp plugged into the laptop. I've been using Spotify on it's highest quality and it all sounds pretty nice. No match for the sound and theatre of a bit of vinyl though lol.

And mine a couple of years ago. Had a badly infected appendix, emergency operation. I ask the surgeon "on a scale of badness, from 1-10 where 10 was the worst you've seen, what was mine?" The answer was "A good 9" All staff at the hospital were fantastic, I sent a thank you letter to the hospital.

Yesterday's disaster. I don't do that much digital file listening but I have about 300GB of FLAC albums on an external hard drive and a while ago I decided to back them up to a Cloud service. Yesterday I found that a routine back-up to the Cloud wasn't working and all too easily in my efforts to solve the problem I deleted the back-ups :doh:

Anyway, the main learning here was that before I started the routine back-up I had inserted a USB stick to the PC for another purpose and this somehow took the "F" drive label and my external hard drive (i.e. the one being backed-up to the Cloud) went from its normal F to a G label, so the Cloud service hadn't recognised it. I thought I'd share that as something to watch out for since when you search the internet for advice on mysterious drive label changes it suggests you might have malware :eek:

Fortunately although at face value the back-ups had been deleted from the Cloud service, and those F-labelled folder files are still listed "greyed out" and inaccessible when I select the deleted files option, it had evidently kept them somewhere because reuploading them all as G-labelled folders only took a few hours rather than the few days that they originally took :scratch: So I guess my other learning is not to despair and to be patient :rolleyes:

No. Not sure what's wrong, PolyEdit and Notepad won't print but photos do. May be printer software issue, I'll reinstall the Canon stuff.

Nope. Canon is selected as default and I only have one printer.

I've found the software disc and will reinstall software. I'll get a driver update too.

In control panel, you may have Canon as default, but when you click print, something else could be selected, for example print to pdf.

Good point, I missed this, the printer not printing a test page, with my printer, I just have to hold the power button down for about 15 sec to print a test page.

There's probably a well hidden option to not install it. I suspect if you look at the updates it comes under optional updates.

If you've got windows set to automatically download and install updates you won't get that list to choose from, I have mine set to manual just got that reason.

I could have sworn the EU made Microsoft not automatically install their browser on machines but that was probably just not pre installed or mandatory on new Windows installs, they will find any way around it they can. You will have opted in with automatic updates.

I just had my PC "C" drive fail on me which was quite surprising, as its a Samsung SSD and only about 5 years old. Luckily, I have run 2 hard drives for some time now and all documents and data etc live on another drive so very little was lost apart from time and and the cost of the drive. It has melted several SATA power connectors, and burnt out the optical drives.
The SATA power connectors stink when they get hot and start to smoke….

I was worried it had taken out the SSD that my music library is on, but it seems like I have got away with it.

This laptop's on its last legs, takes an age from switching on to being usable, it's so slow that after switch on all kinds of unsolicited nonsense crashes onto the screen, and nothing I want will respond until I've closed down these things. That would be great if possible, but I thought changing your password was only possible when first joining. Like when you get a credit/debit card.

This laptop's on its last legs, takes an age from switching on to being usable, it's so slow that after switch on all kinds of unsolicited nonsense crashes onto the screen, and nothing I want will respond until I've closed down these things. steve when you get it working, depending on what browser you use.. say google.. the dots at top right should take you yo password manager where looking up aos you can find the password. firefox is similar.

sounds like lappy is probably past it and is struggling with both new tech with low tech lappy and possibly a lot of crap in it too.

but extracting the important passwords should mean your ok.

if you have a phone/tablet you can join tapatalk and use that tho you will also need your password

Cheers, I've found that, should be straightforward, especially if I get Anita to do it :) So I can buy new laptop with confidence... gonna be something cheapy-cheap though. I don't expect it needs to be much for Ebay, Amazon, occasionally googling and chatting on here.

I agree. Unless portability is needed, I'd not consider a laptop. Particularly for my poor eyesight, as being able to use a larger monitor is a good thing.

Don't forget, you may still want the ability to play DVD or CD but not have that option in the device being considered. There are USB 'plug and play' add-on devices.

I would agree with you and Alex, but I really don't have the room for a desktop computer. There's already stuff in every part of this teeny tiny bungalow, none of which we can do without. There's a small space at the side of the sofa, that's where the laptop lives.

Well, my PC monitor packed up earlier, good job I could borrow the one from the missus computer. Found another cheap used monitor for sale on ebay 1/4 mile away from me and bought it. Hopefully sorted now!

I used to use second hand monitors, but when one failed a few years ago I bought a new Benq 24" monitor, I was surprised how much clearer things were to my ageing eyes. After that I bought a 27" Benq for another PC in the house.

When attempting to find my password for AoS, I was asked a security question (presumably to check I'm not a robot). The question was "When setting up a turntable, what does VTF mean?" I replied Vertical tracking force. It came back "You have answered the question incorrectly". I've never denied being a tech-numpty, but really? What should I have said? I tried different combinations of upper- and lower case, but it wasn't having it. So what does it really mean?

Doesn't really matter now, Mrs. P found a workaround and we're all good.

I imagine it would be easier, and ideal if I was seated at a desk or table. But I always use it while on the sofa. With the old lappy I just clicked on the right hand side of that big clicky area, but this does nothing on the new one. It has to be one of these buttons, I'll consult with the brains of the outfit when she gets up :)

I used a thumb trackball with my laptop years ago. Great to use as you could just lean back in the chair and do what was needed, but they kept wearing out.

Picked up the ebay monitor last night, the seller address was 500 yards away :). It's a 22" LG and like new condition, very clear picture, nice. OK for thirty quid I reckon. I'd have a larger one , but don't really have room.

I worked on the first release of a Windows NT development in EU in 1991-93 for one of the banking institutions with about 100 others. It was a workflow system using Windows NT Gold(pre-release of NT 3.1). The system was developed in house with Visual C++ and Visual Basic and some other stuff, we had direct access to Microsoft engineers and developers for support. The servers and desktops were not cheap, I think around £25-30K for one server without storage and we used 4 different ones, the desktop Workstations were at least £3K each. I suppose if you add inflation then today they would cost about 6 times that. I ran the test/implementation team, the system integrated with early Interactive Voice Response(IVR) which interfaced with support team end users at workstations, we document laser scanners and image storage was done on laser discs machines that looked like washing machines. It was what you could genuinely call 'Bleeding Edge Technology' at the time. As I understand it the core of the system is still in use today, although the Servers, physical IVR, scanning and storage methods have improved somewhat. I ran Windows NT at home on ridiculously expensive PC with just about enough RAM to support it, so I could keep up with it and the rapid changes. It took about 3 hours to install initially around 16 floppy disks, remember those, a year or so down from that CD-Rom came along. Windows NT back then was a tricky beast, it worked but if the HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer) on boot up did not recognise an installed piece of hardware it would either crash or install a generic Drivers/DLLs, which often would be problematic. Change installed hardware in a machine at your peril. What made it worse was that 3rd party manufactures would often change chipset versions on boards, like GPUs, Network cards and others, with no integration testing with NT having been, a recipe for disaster. This was nearly the downfall of Microsoft as it got completely away from them until they went down the recommended and supported developer and hardware list route.
