Mine is fairly reliable, but about 3 months ago it failed, I walked just up the road and bashed on the BT telephone exchange building. An engineer came to the door, had a good chat with him, but he was just site maintenance.

eBay ----------- got problems at checkout, won't let me complete, Confirm and pay box greyed out.
Got eBay to call me, nice lady tried several thing inc. different browsers, no luck, she said it's fault on their side, may be fixed within 24 hours.
It's a new format for the checkout.

Just had another word with eBay, they said still have a bug affecting customers and hope to have it fixed within 24 hours.

Spoke to eBay and Paypal this morning, problem is definitely with the eBay checkout. They say it's affecting around 100 customers. My account is linked directly to my bank account, not a debit or credit card, and for some reason the system is not recognising this.

yup remote desktop... its fast too on ipad. its an old pc but for some reason its the one that has pro on it, so only one that it works on.

Playing around with Linux Mint 19, Cinnamon and Mate flavours on a spare machine, very impressed, everything working well, except Wine.
Trying to install from Software Manager, no success so far. In earlier versions of Mint not had that trouble. I don't really want to use the terminal.

Turns out, other people have had problems installing Wine in Mint 19, I don't have enough knowledge to sort it out. No such problems in Mint 18.3.

Shame, otherwise Mint 19 seems excellent so far.Let me see if I can do a quick install of Mint 19 and Wine. I suspect the Wine install will be via a Terminal session but probably just a copy and paste of some simple commands and to ensure full admin privs are done.
Won't be for a while as I'm away currently away.
I use to use Mint a lot but these days I find Win10 faster and also Microsoft are purposefully being lax in letting people upgrade for free from Win 7 and Win 8.

Thank you, that is kind. I'm sure that with more knowledge and patience I could do it. But it should be easy as it was with previous Mint iterations.
I actually tried this too;
Started with a fresh installation of Mint 18.3 Mate 64 Bit.
Installed Wine from Software Manager.
Did a System Update.
Everything working, including Wine.
Did a System Snapshot using Timeshift.
Did the upgrade from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19 using these instructions: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2416
The upgrade took ages, several times the time taken for a fresh install.
However, it worked! Sort of, everything seemed OK, until I tried Wine, just doesn't start when trying to open a Windows .exe.
Back to square one!
Then, Thought that I'd try rolling back from Mint 19 (with Wine not working) to Mint 18.3 using Timeshift.
It didn't take all that long, and worked, and Wine is working too.

mine is £25 a month, but thats fibre FTS ... quick enough and i doubt i could do better here as all the lines are ancient (talktalk) not had any issues

Been there, done that! I think not.
If you open the bottle at the side of the moon facing sunlight, the amount of water that evaporates away before freezing will be high as the temperature in the sunny side is close to 125 degree Celsius. Similarly, if you open the bottle at the darker side of the moon where temperature is close to minus 150 degree Celsius, the freezing will be almost instantaneous.

Hi Edward, I've been on the Mint Forum, and it appears that quite a few people have had various problems with Mint 19. I went back to 18.3. Still be interested to see what you find.

its a synology nas... I dont know much about them so is this a decent one? I take it it just takes 2, 3.5" hdd's and is connected by a normal ethernet cable?
Yes, yes and yes in answer to those three questions Grant :)
Synolgy are arguably one of the best home NAS boxes - this one isn't particularly fast, but it's a sold reliable workhorse. Find a spot to put, plug an Ethernet cable in, two HDDs and power it up. It's web browser interface is very good and they have an app too.
Synolgy are my favourite boxes for a NAS, if you want something to plug directly into a computer Drobo are very good for that, but IMO not as good as a NAS.
QNAP are good too, lots of choice out there, but I like Synolgy.

My solid state drive (SSD) arrived, put it in my near 10 year old HP DC5800, (4GB RAM, E8600 Core 2 Duo), installed Linux Mint 18.3 Mate, boots in under 10 seconds. Runs nicely.
Pretty quick that. Good idea to pop one in

Received this afternoon, tried with 2.5" hard drives and 2.5" SSD, also with 3.5" hard drives, all work fine.
Only other comments are that when a 3.5" drive is inserted, it sticks a fair way out of the bay, with 2.5" drives, the bay swallow most of the drive, leaving just enough sticking out to make extraction easy.
Good item, does the job.
Cloning the C drive at this moment.

So I managed to get to this. Apologies for the delay.
Anyway I got wine 3.xx to work just fine under Linux Mint 19.
Like you I see that various people are having issues. WineHQ have yet to upload a fully compiled version to the various software stores so, for now, you need to install via Terminal.
The main issues are to point to the correct repository and run the correct commands. WineHQ gives all the steps required here (https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu). You need to scroll down to Mint 19x
But just to make it super easy for you pasted below are the commands you need. Just open a terminal window (ctrl-alt T) and copy each line separately, paste it into Terminal and press enter.
Here are the commands:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable
winecfg
So 8 copy/paste/enter steps in all.
Once you run winecfg it will prompt you to install wine-mono and wine-gecko. Wine-gecko may be asked twice - just go ahead. Then change any settings you want. In particular under Applications / Windows Version you may wish to choose Windows 10, but up to you. Also under Desktop Integration you may wish to have things like Pictures point to your Linux Pictures folder rather than the virtual folders Wine has created.
Test Wine with a windows app - I used irfanview as a test and it worked fine.
After that you may wish to consider installing things like playonlinux and winetricks. All in the app store.

PS: highly suggest you look carefully at the result of each step for any error messages. Usually from the error message you can work out what to change. Error messages, if any, will come mainly from the update and install commands.

As mentioned WineHQ have yet to push it out to the various public repositories. Once they do it will only be a few clicks. The process then will essentially be a batch process that involves all the commands I laid out. Either way you get it. The commands are not a hack, it is what anyway goes on in the background.
Remember also that the repositories will often lag the versions actually available. Going to the source will get you the latest and greatest. If you want to live on the edge install the develop version instead of the stable version.
I did all my testing in Hyper-V so no messing around with discs. As you say 'great fun'.

Bought a second one of these, the idea is to have two in the tower, a 2.5" drive in each, so that I can switch between operating systems by using the on/ off buttons on the drive bays.
I know I could dual boot on a single drive, but I don't like that for various reasons.

Can someone please help?
I am running XP (for various reasons) with an SSD, either a Samsung 860 Evo 500GB or a Kingston SA400S37 480GB. I gather XP does not support trim. The Samsung Magician software with Trim (later versions), don't run on XP. The versions that do, don’t seem to support the 860 Evo.
Is there any Trim software that can run on XP suitable for my SSD's?

Thank you, I had already disabled "Optimize hard disk when idle" and "Drefagmentation". The link to the German? site, I can't read German, looks good. I found the download that does a few things to the registry, and have implemented them. I looked at O&O defrag and thought that this is not wanted as it's just a defrag program. I may be wrong in this.

What a con. Google says it wants to improve the "security [and] privacy" of extensions and improve their performance. Well maybe as secondary issue, but the main issue I bet google have in their mind is to improve their revenues.

Running Windows 10 on a 1TB Sata and Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS on another ITB Sata, and using the standard boot options built in Ubuntu to boot into which ever I want to use, default is Ubuntu so a press button on and into Ubuntu. Works well as my main usage is 99.9999% Ubuntu.
Updated to Windows 1809 yesterday on my latest pc. An hp zbook. Lovely build quality and very fast. Seems to have gone smoothly.

I just wasted most of the evening trying to install a new Canon printer. Bugger wouldn't have it, tried from CD using USB, online using USB. Wireless with CD, Wireless online. In the end I did it online yet again and left the USB cable plugged in (as you're not supposed to) and bingo! The bleeder's working. Was about to box it up for return too............
Should have stuck with an HP one, always get on well with them.

Hmm. None of my photos will upload now as tinypic won't recognise the format. I bet the software that came with the new Canon printer I added yesterday has re-encoded everything.
Not happy with the printer anyway. I can't access the maintenance facilities to clean or re-align heads. I think it will be going back tomorrow, as I really can't be bothered with another re-install. I wasted about five hours repeatedly doing that already.

Well I took the Canon printer back and opted for an HP instead without any quibbling and got a fiver back 'cos it was cheaper. It's now all set up and running perfectly after doing a system restore to get rid of anything Canon related. That's a relief!

I gave up with inkjet printers years ago, just use an ancient laser mono printer, HP Laserjet 6L ProI use an hp mono laser too. Had it for years and still on its first toner. Never did get the wireless to work tho

I need to put the dunce cap on.
Had a fancy keyboard with lots of extra features connected to my PC a while back, now a more standard one. The software for the fancy one was still on the machine. I thought that I'd uninstall it.
Did that, then a reboot, couldn’t log in to Windoze because the keyboard didn’t seem to work!! Daaaaaah!!
Tried a couple of things, no go.
Did a clone of the C drive yesterday, so just cloned it back, didn't take long.

I bought a stand alone mains powered Western Digital HDD in a fancy case about fifteen years ago. It was a whopping 160gb. I said to myself back then "you're never going to need all that capacity", funny how things move on! :)
Still got it and it's hardly ever been used. I must find something to do with it actually. Guess I could bung Linux on it and use it as an alternative to boot from.
lol... my previous biggest is 1tb. the rest are all 1/2tb versions. But my music collection is only 300gb at moment, in fact less. but if i start doing vinyl rips it will soon go up.

Only recently started using Night Light facility, lowers blue light on the monitor during evening so as to reduce eye strain, seems good.

Found that my zbook has what's called a display port, so got an adaptor to hdmi and got it mirrored along with sound to my TV, with sound optically diverted to my quad vena.
Works rather well.
Got a long range logitech keyboard and mouse coming tomorrow.

Seems to have been a Maxthon browser glitch. I found outlook was OK using I.E. and it is now back to normal on Maxthon. Weird.
I read that Maxthon stores stuff in the cloud. Perhaps there was a temporary glitch pulling your Outlook credentials down?

Yes, it is a cloud browser. I suspect they may have been doing maintenance work on the site. All OK now though.
maxthon does have a cache on pc or on cloud, not sure, so it could have been full.

also imo its more of a resource hog. mine is slower so had to switch off some performane graphics etc to get back to fast .. other thsn that it seems good
So I upgraded so far two win10 instances - one a VM and the other a main machine. Upgrades worked out fine. Did not time it but did not seem unduly long as compared to other major revisions.
The screens (e.g. start screen) have been tidied up. Much neater and more organised.
The sandbox feature works brilliantly. As expected it did not work in the VM due to double virtualisation. On the main machine a sandbox instance boots up fast and runs just as fast as the main machine. Network speed is depicted at 10gb (speed connection to main machine) with network protected fully from the LAN (both ways). This can explicitly be defeated by turning on network discover and file sharing. So all good.
Only basic apps provided (Internet explorer and so forth) but fine for the purpose. I may try find a way of changing the default sandbox environment (for instance to include Chrome). Closing the sandbox instance deletes any data and apps created in that session.
I can imagine using the sandbox often.

Got a scan with Spyware Expert running, not done one for ages. I bet it finds some naughty stuff that's sneaked in, trojans and worms and the like, it usually does and it gets rid of them too.

cheers. no i didnt set it in volumio. i set it in the old router. walkthrough was easy. not sure you can do it with this one. i rebooted it and there dont seem to be any changes as expected.
Dunno why they changed it tbh. I seem to get same wifi signal upstairs now so thats a bonus.

Seems to be fine although when I restarted volumio the ip changed so it means I'm going to have to fing the ip every time I power up.

Clearly there are many utilities which do great jobs. I use Avast which gives real time protection against many types of nasties, including viruses, malware and so forth. This together with ccleaner, adwcleaner and privacy repairer seems to keep my system clean and sparkling.
Which reminds me I need to clean my windows soon. Just waiting for a dry day. :)

lol its all off another pc. there are compatibility issues and a slowness setting up and going off mostly, but im checking a few things out today.
its better than nothing and at least its reading drives, and the adaptor works. its only a 32 bit os tho, should be a 64
More effort put in and its working better now.

at least it is possible to do something i was always told you couldnt do. to speed it up i got it to try updating to latest version. it got to near end then failed and removed update, but it left in some stuff that made the system work better..
so pc is working well although currently only 32 bit. still better than nothing
Well, bouyed by my success yesterday I decided to try again, this time using a 64 Pro version off my zbook.
It worked and it took the latest version update too 1903.

My neighbour can't remember his log on for his Windows 7 laptop. He brought to me to see if I could do anything. I Googled the problem (well actually dudduckgoed it) and there are many solutions. I chose PCunlocker, http://www.pcunlocker.com/ and it worked very well, just deleted the unknown password. neighbour is pleased.
Seems like my Laptop screen is buggered (well known technical term!).
Before I rush out and buy another one looking for confirmation if you think it is the screen or the graphics card.
I've updated drivers, updated the BIOS, opened up and checked all cable seatings, cleaned things and the motherboard etc.
I think it is the screen and really can't be arsed getting a replacement screen as the laptop is now about 3 years old and was not high end anyway.
Anyone got a laptop they no longer need? :) Only use it for browsing and a Roon controller.

Yup, pretty sure not the connectors. I disconnected both connectors (motherboard and screen connectors), cleaned them up and connected again. No improvement. Also, as a confirmation that it is the screen, connected to an external monitor and all good (proving that the graphics chip is fine).

Looks like a replacement screen can be had for about £35 so not so much and may well try that.
Pity, as I was limbering up to buying a new toy. My finance director (swmbo) had already given me the green light. [emoji23]
Whilst I was farting around with the laptop I watched the Apple live stream of their new products. Nice products but I was struck how their presentation was like a new age cult meeting.

Lady up the road (age 94) rang me up a few months ago saying some lights had failed. She still had an old fusebox and helpfully there was some fusewire by the box. Two mins and I was being thanked to the stars.

My mum always said 'mend, don't spend'. So this morning I played around with the connectors and stuff, sat back and said 'spend'. The laptop is now about 3 years old and I can't be arsed dedicating more time on it. So I went out and bought a new HP Pavilion convertible thing. Yet to set it up but looking forward to using it in tablet and normal mode.

Hi all, well it's that time of year , renew internet security on my aging laptop, it runs windows xp and so windows no longer supports this. I had avast which worked fine but the renewal was too expensive so I uninstalled in prep for something new,oh dear, I can no longer connect to the internet:doh: apparently theres has been a catastrophic error and the laptop can no longer find my internet via wifi or cable,so, should I try a factory reset, if there is one on the laptop? :steam: Jim

Avast free still works on XP, that with Zone Alarm free firewall should be good.
Linux Mint Mate should suit an old laptop that was running XP.

I've been using XP regularly on one of my PC's (with precautions taken) up till a few days ago. More and more things are dropping support for XP, so pretty well I've stopped using it. For example, I cannot log onto my energy providers website with XP.
My main machine has W10 LTSC with Shutup10 and W10 debloater on it, and Linux Mint 19.3 on a second drive.

You can download W10 legally free. It will not be activated, but it will be perfectly usable. The thing is it will probably run slow on an old XP machine. Do you have the spec of the machine?

Solution is easy, get the 3yr old to sort it.
You could make a Linux Mint bootable USB stick and try running the laptop from there. Pretty easy.

all sorted thanks Alex, i managed to reset Windows xp to default settings,afterwards i was instructed to do various things and to be honest i wasnt sure what i was doing!, never the less it worked and ive installed Avast free for the time being until i decide which security to purchase, cheers:cool:
Avast is fine. You don't need to pay for antivirus. In fact, there's perfectly good free software for just about every purpose.

Well would you bloody believe it, I decided on buying TotalAV internet security £20, it will not install, I've had this before with a couple of others, I've emailed and asked for a refund and will be installing Avast free and the other things you have suggested. I don't usually use VGA as HDMI and DVI give a better picture.

Judging by the response received from the seller this is the case. However, it wasn't indicated in the sale description and VGA was quoted in the spec.

Well put, I had two ostensibly the same computers, both with add on graphics card (same models), with one the card disabled the VGA, the other didn't,

HDMI/DVI are digital, VGA is not, therefore adaptors are not trivial, cost a bit. Are you sure that none of you monitors have DVI at least, DVI has been going for many years?

Seems good value. I believe that DVI output may have a analogue output as well, so I suppose that with a correctly wired DVI to VGA cable, that may work. I hope that I'm not talking rubbish.

Been trying some anti spyware solutions. I had 10bit Malware Fighter on there briefly. No good, despite its popularity. It had something called IMF.exe running in the background using loads of processor capacity, so it was soon uninstalled. Malwarebytes is always dependable, but does slow PCs down a bit. As does the latest incarnation of Spybot. I always install One Click Spyware Expert anyway, regardless of what else I may use. It's an old utility, but free and works on all Windows installations and it digs deep, finding all sorts of bugs. Not real time though, manual scans. I'm just messing about really, my security suite from Comodo covers every need anyway.
Geoff, anti virus software unfortunately can be memory and CPU hungry, when I had a PC I found Kaspersky to be better that most, but do not know what it is like now. With respect to a computer fans spinning up and getting hot apart from heavy processes such as Video, music and high CPU usage then it can be caused with age due to the thermal heat sink paste between CPU and/or GPU processors getting old and hard stopping proper heat transfer. If a computer is used everyday for several hours in my experience the paste starts to harden at around 4-5 years.
Simple solution if you can get to then inside is to take the heat sink(s) off, usually held down with 4 bolts to motherboard and then clean the old of the CPU/GPU with kitchen roll and isopropyl alcohol and do same to the heat sink. Then get small tube of new thermal paste and run a small fillet across the top of the CPU/GPU put heat sink on top and do up screws, the pressure will squeeze the thermal paste out. This should sort things out for a few years.

I've been relying on Security Essentials for some time now and had no issues.
I did however try out the now old Threatfire, behaviour based A/V for a while, which has a very low demand on computer resources. An interesting product. I've noticed that some of the more well known A/V offerings now include a behaviour based element as well as the regular signature detection (which requires continual definitions updates).

Many years ago Zone Alarm firewall was recommended to me by the main IT guy at BAE Systems, a very nice guy, sadly inflicted with a disease that progressively eroded his brain capacity. Some time ago wondered why he did not email me much, he said that he could barely remember how too. Sadly, he's gone now.
Of all the PC protection/ scanning tools that I've tried, the one that impresses me a lot is the free ESET online scanner. It seems so thorough.

Well this went back and I got a refund.

It was cheap enough and the spec adequate for the wife to use in the living room.
But, when unpacked there was something heavy loose inside, turned out to be the DVD drive, obviously jarred free in transit.
I spoke to the seller and he suggested laying the PC so the disc drive lies clear of anything else and firing it up. I did and everything works fine including the WiFi (not tested the disc drive as it's out of line with the slot).
I'll remount the drive and keep this PC. Not worth all the aggro of sending back, it was cheap and does everything I need. Seems really quick too.
One of my old laptops is now got vertical lines and a haze all over screen. Taking it as the graphics card has maybe gone. It's old so maybe time to put it to sleep

Early this morning speed was around 3 Mbps and has remained as such all day. Talktalk say there is nothing wrong, only solution is to upgrade to fibre.

Lenovo wireless keyboard has suddenly stopped working properly.
Basically, the keys / typing works randomly, missing out letters when typed.
I've updated drivers, re-booted numerous times, even system restore point back to Sunday - problem still there.
Am I probably right in assuming the keyboard is faulty / needs replacing ?

If you have reset to factory settings the keyboard...(control panel and search keyboard and then click advanced and click at the bottom reset to factory settings ), then most likely the keyboard is shot..

Not being funny Josie but have you tried logging out of AoS on your computer if you have one, and then logging in entering your password, just incase you have got the Password wrong.
If you are not comfortable doing that then you could go to setting in AoS and edit email and password and enter a new password and then try logon to Tapatalk AoS with the new password.

Sure, no problem. I have changed my password. Logged out, logged back in on the laptop and it's fine. Then I logged out of AOS on the laptop and tried to log in on Tapatalk... again, no dice.

I had a similar problem with Tapatalk and AoS a few months ago, I think it is to do with the cache for it becoming corrupted on the device, this is were the user id and password will be stored so that when you re-open the Tapatalk app it looks for the Forums logons that you are subscribed to in Tapatalk and then tries to log you in automatically. Obviously if the cache with the userid and password has become corupted then you will not get in. By entering the Username and not email address you probably have refreshed the cache for the AoS logon in Tapatalk and presto in you get.
I hope that makes sense, all you needed was an IT Genius.:lol:
By the way are you still selling the odd vinyl I know we did speak about Kula Shaker some time ago.
