I'm lucky, booze makes me ill, at least most does, I'm allergic to the Sulphure Dioxide that's put in as a preservative. Champaign is OK for me!
If the performance I'm getting from the little SHDD is typical, you should be very happy.
Guess you can fix that before you use it though. Good price and 64 cache

What does appear to be a good idea, that is, if cloning from a conventional HD, defragment that first before cloning.

I did a defrag of my normal HD last night, so that was fine cloning to the SSHD today.
Partitionmagic or something similar should do.
I could not time my fist boot with the SSHD as ZoneAlarm wanted various boxes ticked and that spoilt timing it.
But, as mentioned second boot was about half the time for the conventional HD.
Its a little quicker to start id say, and once browser is open, quicker to open pages. Its a fairly old pc i guess being a vista one originally. Its deffo more usable now with lots more room and a bit of speed too. Not sure if i cocked up the ssd part or not. Guess i wont now.
Still happy its working and i achieved it myself, with a little help from my pc guru :)

ive an other pc I could use it on, or might set up a 2 disc enclosure externally, if I can get the other to work. Going to keep the old image on that disc for a while as backup
Ive backed the whole thing up to an external now with the new program, and tomorrow I will make the recovery disc too. Then give the lappy a run and see how it performs. Looks promising, and can recommend anyone bar a novice, doing this for yourselves, as its not to difficult and there are free programs for helping you available. It is an upgrade and more room tboot, for what turned out to be very little outlay.

I've never got on with backup programs, prefer to make a complete clone of the drive, but without USB 3.0 on a laptop, this is too time consuming.
Used Aomei Backupper. they do a nifty partitioner too, both free :) Took about an hr I think.

Ah yes, have tried that, and the partitioner. Still went back to Seagate DiscWizard.
I'm enjoying the speed of the Hybrid.
I wonder if a 3.5" 7200 RPM hybrid will be faster! Still, this is excellent for the money.
Opening Firefox with a zillion tabs is much quicker now.
Think you need to buy a product to get that though.... Much will depent on the pc, as to whether iths quicker or not; in your case, probably will be as you got such a bi improvement

My second Seagate 2.5" SSHD arrived this morning. Very fast delivery, 2015 manufacture, a little earlier that the first one.
However, the attached data from the drive show that it had only run for 2 hours.

I was just thinking, perhaps a new experience for me, and could be dangerous: The fastest way to clone your HD for your USB 2.0 laptop, would be to remove it and clone using your machine that has USB 3.0. I forget if it is a laptop or other, but that really doesn't matter.
The lap with usb3 is currently using linux.. It was a win 8... Dont think it would boot from a win 7 hdd or would it. Not sure

Would need 2 usb3 connections then. Think this one inly has 1. Other 2 are usb2.
Interestingly ive powered this drive up, on what will be the user lap. It already has win 7 on and lenovo recovery, so he has not wiped it. Guess when i clone it will be wiped automatically?

Ah, only one USB 3.0 socket, you would need a USB 3.0 hub, possibly a powered one.
Depends on the cloning software.
The seller mentions that there will be a win 7 installation on the drives.
I have communicated with him, seems that he converts a fair number of new Lenovo's to SSD, and so has the SSHD's for sale that come out of the new machines.

Aye, anything will be an improvement. If not i might try and put win 7 on via the linux pc from disc.. Dunno if it would work, and use it on the fancy one. Probably a bad idea, and should give up on getting any windows on it now.

Should be OK.
With DiscWizard, need to have one Seagate or Maxtor drive somewhere in the system for it to work. As mentioned, DiscWizard is a cut down version of Acronis (well known software). In fact I have Acronis and I prefer to use DiscWizard.

Excellent, that's almost exactly the same time as my desktop to boot, was around two minutes with ordinary 7200 RPM HD. My desktop has massive amount of software installed.

Not had a chance to use it yet but after a few power ups its starting up in 30 secs ...waow..
The tosh that i did first is down to 48 secs now but it has an extended period on the tosh screen for you opportunity to boot etc that most pcs dont have so probably nearer 42 secs.. Not bad as its got a host of updates that the other doesnt.
Good is my opinion and well worth the minimal cost and a few hrs. That second program was much better as was aomei partitioner.

Excellent result you had, I'm keeping tabs on what ebay seller iict has coming in. It all seems excellent value.
Not sure if I should use my second SSHD in a spare desktop, or in a netbook that I have. The netbook needs dismantling to get at the HD, don't fancy that, have done it before.
I'll give it a run tomorrow. Now onto the linux one now... I ran the "hardinfo" through terminal,and its a cool program. lots of info on the innards etc of the laptop.
That sshd with the 8 faulty sectors arrived.. Ive tested it and found none...result i think. Got a 3.5" hdd coming too, and going to set them in a box as an external set up

Just used windows own tester. Its maybe been a software bad sectors, thats been cleared when he wiped it

Silly question, perhaps.
I bought a metal mounting bracket to mount my 2.5" SSHD in my desktop.
Do I need an insulator between the underside of the drive and the bracket?
The drive mounts circuit board down, and it's almost touching the bracket.
I was thinking of covering the bracket with Kapton tape.

Mine was close too in the compaq laptop which uses a full frame as well. Its fairly close but the screws stop it touching.. I guess if room a thick bit of paper card would do. I wouldnt stick anything to the pcb

In my case it would be nice to have good thermal contact between the metal of the SSHD and the metal bracket.
Kapton tape would reduce the thermal conductivity, but not much. Sticky side of the tape would be towards the bracket, nothing sticky on the SSH circuit board.
If screws hold it firm and away, you only need a minor gap. Maybe a spacer if thers room.. The foam ones on the bay are cheap and about 2 mil thick.

The gap? appears to be about the thickness of thin paper, probably about 5 thousandths of an inch! Too close if one considers that the bracket may not be that level being a pressed item.
That shim is probably to go on top of the drive.
Probably go with the Kapton tape, it's a good electrical insulator.
Since i changed the hdd the updates have started. Lol. A case of, oh look, space...lets fill it up

Update, my desktop machine several days after the hybrid drive update is running extremely nicely, consistently fast.
Before the upgrade I de-fragmented the original standard hard drive prior to cloning to the hybrid drive.
I am quite amazed that after several days very hard use, the new drive has not become fragmented at all.

So, I don't know how the hybrid drive handles all this, but it's certainly a bonus.
Nice." I check one of the ones i copied and it came up as 0% defrag so dunno how that happened unless original was too.
That big 3.5" drive came today...think that was next day.. Its a big brute of a thing. Heavy too. Not checked it so far. Not so sure it will fit in the box i was planning on although they say it takes this size.

The ST500DM002 can't be that old, anyway I bet that when you check the data from it, virtually no hours on it.
It's standard size, and a slim one too. I have one as my backup drive in my desktop, the Hybrid now being the main drive.
I think I mentioned that I bought the ST500DM002 fairly recently, new, paid about double what you paid.
Usually a date code somewhere.
There is a date code. Dunno what it means though..seagate might have a page. Will check it later and see. How do you get the running time of drive up?

Approx 0.8" is the thickness of the "slim" drives, the older "thicker" drives are just over 1" thick
1 hr on the clock. No apm on it as its a desktop i guess. Not as quick via the usb2 of course ... Has win 7 on plus lenovo image..3 partitions, like others. Will do nicely. Measured thickness and its about 18mm, but has no case on one side.
Seems fine.. I will leave it as is for now

I've used Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 98SE, Win 2000, Win ME, Win XP, Win 7, Win 8.1, I've avoided using Vista, and I don't reckon that I will use Win 10.
Another small cock-up on win 10's march to world dominance lol. I see they interrupted the weather forecaster in the states with one of their nag screens too ... that was hilarious.

3.1 and 2000 were pretty good.
I don't like the permission settings in Win 7, seem to be a pain sometimes.
vista was ok when it came out, but it needed so much doing to it security wise that it just ground to a halt. At least 7 works. * was ok within reason, but again it had so many holes in it that it became a joke to use. 10? it seems to be getting a lot of untested updates so it looks to be going same way. xp pro was good; liked it

Although I never used Vista, I had to fix quite a few Vista machines for friends, best fix was to replace it with Win 7.

Now working and very quick to start at about 20 secs. tried the key for it and , typical it doesnt work... furious so sent the guy an email...... wait and see what he says before outing him.

I think you have Win 7 ultimate, that should be OK.
All fixed now.. Guy phoned me and sorted it. need to give him a good review now, instead of the bad one i was contemplating
This flies along now(an ex win 8). I still have its hard drive with the linux settings etc on.

I'm looking for free software (for Windows), that will give me a graphic equaliser. Yes, programs like VLC Player have one, some soundcard drivers/ software have them too.
I want one that will be effective on all sound that comes through the computer.

Thank you, used to use Download.com years ago, gave up when they started to use installers that more than often included unwanted stuff like toolbars etc.
But, I will have a search through and see if there is anything.

Changed to Majorgeeks, it's pretty safe, but not so easy to find stuff.

Just downloaded and installed, sound is distorted whatever I have tried, says something in the notes about distortion, but I can't get this to work properly. It's the right sort of application though, need to try something else.

New prog did not install properly, even Revo would not uninstall it. System Restore would not work.
Had the clone done yesterday, was easy to restore from that.
as I used the 2.5" seagate sshd drive, I decided to grab another of those barracuda 3.5" ones from same guy.. that will give me 2 of same size and speed, so will make a nice backup drive in an enclosure. both do usb3 and 7200 spindle speed so should be quick on this for back ups etc. Even on usb2 they will likely be faster than the externals Ive currently got . 14£ odd inc postage is so cheap i thought it silly not to grab another.

Certainly those 3.5" drives are good value. Trouble with the 3.5" in an external enclosure, one needs a power supply. The 2.5" drives power though the USB, more convenient.
Not sure that you will gain any speed going from 5400 RPM to 7200 RPM using USB 2.0.
I'm certainly finding benefit of the Hybrid drives. Firefox with a zillion tabs opens pretty fast now.
A few days ago I sent the ebay seller a message asking him to leave feedback for me, not done so yet, might be on holiday.
think he did for 1 but not the rest, so far. It'll mostly be used on this one with the usb3, which may well end up downstairs. I will eventually pop a flight sim on this too as on win 7 it will go well. Its got altec lansing sound too, and works well with external speakers. did well with a usb dac too. Need some back up ability before I go there though.
Getting wired ethernet upstairs has made a big difference too to pc here... Both the tv boxes are streaming better too, even though I get quite fast wifi, is seems to start slow and build up, while the wired shoots away. This ethernet switchbox for under a tenner was a great buy off amazon..Netgear

All my stuff is connected by Wi Fi, should have cables really, I might get round to that at some point.
Those TP link mains senders are great, or mine is. Gets it up to me in both wifi and wired. then a switch to give me enough ends and not have to use too long cables. Its just as fast as my normal too at 30mb/s ... very handy if you dont want to, or cant drill holes everywhere.

I was going to use them, but the Wi Fi has been working great for some years. I have had to replace a few Homeplug type units for several friends when they failed.
Ive had them for about 9 months i think. Seem good so far although getting more use now, so will get a better idea of reliability.
That old acer laptop i had i put the 1tb drive from the pavilion in it and installed win 7. Seems to be running quite well so far. Think the disc is getting worn as it didnt want to run again. Need to find another. Its been a lifesaver. So thats 3 with ultimate and one with home premium.

Possibly the later homeplug systems are more reliable, they seem to use less power, therefore less heating, so perhaps more reliable.
The ultimate disc getting worn? Try copying it to a new disc, that often works.

Found a new lite distro in Zorin 9 lite. Seems very good and runs well on my really ancient last century laptop. I tried the core version but it didnt work; think there was a problem on disc perhaps ...dunno, might do another someday. Anyhoo this 1/2 gig ram pc with an old ide small hard drive is running remarkably well now.

Thank you, not an unreasonable price, but one can get an external 1TB 2.5" external drive for about that cost.
There were cheaper options but wanted a nice one for looks sake as it will be on view once i get it all set up properly downstairs., but can go upstairs without any trouble should i need to.. Usb3 too. Was intending making one of the pcs a home server but i,m struggling with my knowledge tbh, so that looks unlikely at moment.
I tried Tonido and it worked a little but not well and kept stalling and getting lost

Alas ive had an accident with one of the hdds... I fell over and knock the case when it must have been writing :doh: its now become write protected. Its actually not write protected but seems to think it is...its gon raw and cant be fixed i think... Fortu!ately it wasnt expensive but annoying. Im getting unsteadyer by the week it seems lol

Have you treid Crystaldisk info. might tell you if what's wrong.
Perhaps get the info off it and try wiping with GParted.
Aye,it was one of the baracudas. Ive tried a few things and got what was on it with easus. Not that i wanted it tbh. Though if i did it i might be able to convert it back to ntfs from raw but it just says write protected. I used diskpart and its not write protected. Also tried scans and repairs etc but it doesnt move. Only thing i can think is its buggered. Shame but such is life..
Seeing doc for other faulty bits Alex, so will add it to the list.... I might be a write off

I've had something similar with HDD's but not this exact thing. What might be worth trying is putting it as master in a machine, booting the machine from a CD of Gparted and wiping/ formatting.
Yes, getting older things happen. I'm been putting off going to my GP with a few questions. I used to get annual MOT's, they seem to have stopped doing that.
I will hang on to it till time comes i lay hands on a machine that has a 3.5" bay and try that. If not then its a clock or grinder conversion for it lol

I have an old Philips 32" LCD TV, works as a monitor, but text looks at bit off on it. I suppose later sets will be better. Thanks, I don't have an Android phone or other device, may get one at some stage.
After having succeeded in my trial with the audio server through foobar, but not on main bubble server(same server but implemented inside foobar) i have installed it on the older acer laptop. Intalled the pc in spare room where it can run happily and serve either the upstairs stereo via the little dac, or throughout the house via the upnp server, mostly to end up on the end of the chromecast audio disc thing and into stereo. So i have that and the rpi running i must give the 2 a head to head test sometime. Maybe get the troops over some sat...
On the really old tosh from 1999. I have noticed although it started reasonably fast on zorin lite, it seems to be hesitant now, so, and with fair dos to it as its 16 years out of date, its going to be retired permanently ..... Might see if there is a need for it as spares repairs. It is in embarrassingly good nick...

I tried different browsers and even another PC, but no joy. Leading me to guess the problem was at their end. Today all is as it should be. Baffled :scratch:.

i got it(hp Printer) working on a usb cable, but not wirelessly. I like linux and will continue to use it, but I really like win 7 ultimate. got this one that wouldnt work right on anything tbh, so tried the free upgrade and got it ... gotta be worth the trying, and its really only for using at night on here and soccer manager

If your security is ok and you dont do silly things then it should be safe enough. A lot of folk dont take updates but get by fine.

When you install XP, the included Internet Explorer is so old it refuses to work. So if you don't have a suitable browser on a memory stick or similar to bung on there, you can't get online to download any other essential software.
SRIronware portable browser works. Kingsoft anti virus works. At least they did last time I tried.
I have a copy of Threatfire A/V on a stick. It was offered by PCTools which is part of Symantec I think a while back and is behaviour based, so never really needs updates. It just blocks odd PC behaviour. Not sure if a download can still be found. I used it for a couple of years with no bother.
OneClick Spyware Expert works with XP and all others up to W10. Very effective.
Cant find the laptop... Very odd. Its not where it should be or even where it shouldnt lol. I was going to fling it out but i hadnt so far....maybe it got up and left in the huff lol

If you are using Mint or Ubuntu or Debian, ( you forgot to say which ) just go to Software Centre type in hp, a package called Hplip
it provides full support for most inkjet and laser jets. Also type in a search engine which printer you have and which operating system
you will find lots of support to assist. For instance HP xxxxx on Mint 18 as search criteria
I have yet to find a printer that would not work on Linux, I have had success with Samsung and Epson - the Epson which I even got going
over a network.

Yes, a strange speed, but probably a good compromise. This suppler has still not left feedback for me, I have reminded him as well.

Ah, well good it warned you of extra heat. I tested mine over acfew days and hottest was 43oC
No major probs with win 10 so far, although tbh its only really used for browsing currently. I tried to use the chromecast with its edge browser but it doesnt work lol... also that Cortana doesnt work either, not that I wanted it to but is it too much to ask for them to actually make something that understands you? Amazons one is the only one Ive come across that does...ios one is the same and is disabled . I also tried chromecast on chrome...it doesnt work either...eek
Certainly starts quickly enough and not had anything dire happen re the updates

It's a real pain. I can't send a procedure to punch card or even to the daisywheel printer.

A while ago something similar but with the addition of an HD was at bargain price, whilst I was dithering, it more than doubled in price, didn't buy it.
Hmmm.. Well it arrived.. Initially it was not good..in fact its rubbish if you use ios. Obviously vt worked once theere but not on ios 10 ayway... It causes loads of issues and not fit for purpose tbh
On other hand on my android tablet it works reasonably well....i think but only fiddled with it so far
The ios thing is probably why its cheap now and they are probably hoping most users will be anddoid... They have kinda shot themselves in foot though because lots of folk will now avoid them like the plague

My grand daughters are today unable to use their Windows 10 HP laptop.
An error message pops up each time they try do do anything. Any ideas as to what has happened?

It has AVG anti-virus if I'm correct.
I tried starting in 'safe mode', it won't let me. Nor has 'system restore' got a functioning restore point.

I've seen those Grant.
It msconfig is not cooperating and I have no W10 disc.
It won't let me deactivate AVG or uninstall it. There's 'Wise Program Uninstaller' on there too, but that won't fire up either.
There is an avg uninstaller you can download but you might not be able to do that.
Belarc advisor if you again can get it on will find out you licence...
Otherwise a fresh install

It offers the option to reset W10 to 'as new' assuming that will function, but My daughter does not want to lose data.
I think I may let her get it sorted. At least that way, I won't get the blame for anything untoward.
often wise. She might now learn to save data off board. She will be able to get it off if needed. Ive a program for refinding lost data on drives.. works quite well too

There is, but it won't show a prior date that works.
I tried some software from a stick. It won't let that run either. I'm pretty sure it's a virus of some sort rather than something playing up. Every facility that one would use to fight a virus seems blocked.

I suppose that it's not easy to take the HD out. If you could, and connect it as a secondary to another computer, then run Malwarebytes or something similar.
can you get in and download anything geoff? if so, Malwarebytes chamelon might fix it
you might have to go into the bios and alter the boot order in ufei etc.. there are others too but if its a false positive then it might not show up

It has now decided it will not connect to the internet. MalwareBytes is already on it, but the laptop won't let it run.
To be honest, I'm done with it. As I said, I'm not carrying the can for further issues. It can go to a PC repairer. It's not doubt something the girls have done, probably an infected site or download.

That's what's on the laptop. It won't function. It could be AVG stopping it, but I can't turn AVG off or uninstall it. So I'm not getting involved further.

I have Internet Explorer on my PC. I don't use it though, but when I check the history there are always loads of temporary files to delete. Presumably IE is interacting with my other two browsers. SRWare Iron and Maxthon (which is IE based I believe).
By the way. The previously mentioned daughters laptop is back from the repairer. The W10 O/S was beyond repair and had to be replaced. The technician said it was a virus. Don't know if he identified it though. Anyway it's fixed. I didn't ask the cost.....wouldn't have been cheap.

Yes, I found something like this. Don't forget that IE is part of he operating system, or at least was, remember that fuss many years ago when there was annoyance that it was incorporated.

I seem to recall uninstalling IE some time ago when it was playing up, to reload it. Dunno if that can still be done. I'll not bother, as it works and is a back up, although I do keep a copy of SRWare Iron Portable on a stick in case I find myself with a PC that has no functioning browser. Which has happened.
Incidentally, if you install XP, the old version of IE (8, I think) that accompanies it is a dead duck, so you can't get online without an alternative.

My neighbour, a person well into his 70’s and not very computer literate, has been complaining that his new laptop (W10), bought by his son, is a bit of a pain to for him to use, and that his old desktop runs slow, even though his son has reloaded Window 7 on it. I had a look at the desktop machine and found that it was very old, not much memory.
I suggested Linux may be a good option, put Mint 18 Mate on it, seems to run pretty well. All devices were recognised. Just went to printers and the HP Photosmart printer was installed very easily.
The friend finds it great, He can easily do emails, surfing etc. on it. He’s very happy.
Mint 18 mate is very good. Quite stable too. Good of you to fix it

Intending it to replace the 2.5” 500GB 5400 RPM hybrid that it in my desktop at the moment, which was a speed improvement over the ordinary 7200 RPM drive that it replaced.
Great price for 1tb. Good to have proper neighbours

My PC has occasionally not wanted to boot properly, going as far as the 'starting windows' screen and not going further. The central moving windows icon not appearing. Then when restarting it tells me to use startup repair, which I have in the past, to no avail. Anyway, I wondered if a dead motherboard battery could be the cause, so I just changed it, told bios to use default settings and save. Then every time I turned the PC on I got a bios page telling me the computer case had been opened. After some hunting about I found how to turn that off and save settings again. Then the browser kept giving messages saying page security certs were out of date. I finally twigged and noticed the time and date saved by windows was wrong. Reset that and so far all is good again. Hope it always boots properly now. All fun and games! :)

I would have thought unlikely if you were getting as far as the Windows logo, but I'm no expert. Was caught out recently when a friend's son's newish laptop would not boot from USB. Discovered that there is something called safe boot that had to be turned off before booting to USB can work.

Well it's firing up just fine today and running with no gltches. Seems a little quieter too. Probably 'cos I blew all the dust and fluff out of the heat sink on the processor. Fingers crossed it stays good. :)
Had one that used to stall befor the windows logo and it was the type of hdd externally attached.. it was trying to boot from it as usb had been pushed forward. Only did it with this hdd, not others. Fixed it by reordering the boot..

I'm still wondering if it was the battery change or resetting bios to default that did the trick. Could be both I guess.
Down battery usuually just affects the clock initially in my experience. Trouble is if its only used on and off the thing keeps happening. More likely the bios reset, but that may have been affecting the bios
