Much, much better than Linn Kans though, eh?
Depends of you can have them well away from a wall.
The 3/5A was before it's time as the KEF midrange unot wasn't really up to full-range duties (in the 3/5A or Kan IMO) and truly wide-band tweeters didn't exist then either. Neither the scansqueak that Linn used nor the T27 in the 3/5A went down far enough and the B110 wouldn't go high enough without complaining viciously - a deep dip followed by the "quack" at 5kHz. The BBC design put in a ringing filter at the dip frequency to try to "correct" this, with some success in the early days before KEF had to fugg up the B100 design...
Thankfully for those in the real world, the current Harbeth "derivative" - the P3ESR, has NONE of these shortcomings and sounds delightfully sweet and clear - a totally different ball game altogether I think (the twenty year old original P3 was shedloads better too - I compared these with the later 3/5A, although Alan S said the original mid 70's LS3/5A was something special in his opinion)
You don't see these very often:

:lolsign:
Some Mission '730' presently running, they need some work but i'm very tempted.
Not necessarily a bargain, but could be of interest to someone if they are looking for some Harbeth SHL5's, he is taking offers?

£1,750 or best offer
not sure if this is a bargain as I don't know how much they go for, but reckoned to be a great amp nonetheless.

class A and all that...
A bit of a bidding war went on there - although against someone with zero feedback so could be dodgy or bidding by someone who had pie in the sky ideas of buying them and so felt he could bid what he wanted and walk away if too much..
Still, not too far off normal for a pair of early Chartwells..
Have to remember also that the pound had a devaluation of some 30% a few years ago - other countries will be paying the same prices as maybe they always have but it will be 30% higher when priced in £s..
I think that's certainly the case with BC1s - people in the Euro zone have always been paying around £300 for them which equated to €500.
Now they still pay €500 but in £s today that is now £440.. so the price appears to go up whereas actually the value of all your savings has gone down!
Chartwell LS3/5as used to reach ~ £2000 max a few years ago, now they reach £3000 max. Can be accounted for PURELY by GBP devaluation.
Better really to keep your savings in something that has international value, has a its footing over a few boarders - LS3/5as could be a good store of money that will keep it's value or Gold or whatever..
Add that in to coming crises maybe you'd all better start buying these up before the UK gets hit by the ratings agencies!
£3100 for those Chartwells is total an utter nonsense - I have heard the Rogers equivilant. Good little 'speaker but I wouldn't pay more than a ton and a half even if they were mint. Crazy:mental:
eBay prices can be crazy. I have been clearing out a few bits from my loft in the last month and decided to list a few for a laugh instead of binning them. Well, I wish I had also listed some other bits I binned prior to thinking of ebay .
It's a different market over there and to be honest the UK public have a reputation amongst international dealers of being tightwads when it comes to classic and good gear - at least that's what I pick up from people and history - hence a lot of great manufacturers gave up on the domestic market and did (and still do) export only.
It is a little crazy in the big scheme of things but then I'd say a lot less crazy than current high end with multi tens of grand speakers and turntables and Dacs - in that light, with a finite source, with increasing demand, with cache of history, nostalgia, with rarity for mint ones, it makes much more sense. And then this price is really £2000 when you factor in GBP depreciation.
Not a bargain as such but a fair-ish price from a long established seller:

These speakers are well capable of (quite politely) bringing the world to an end if you should so desire (and have the amplification).
I thought they looked horrid with grilles off, but I agree about the sonics if the A series was properly amplified :)
Of all the vintage ranges out there, I think Celestion has the most complete range of "old-goodies" from baby to top models. B&W have a very patchy range IMO and some of their former output could be dire as I recall. KEF too, although not as bad, certainly in the mid 70's, but these decoupled bass units ruined any sense of timing on plucked (or struck!) bass instruments, all in the sake of preventing midrange colouration... And as for some of the cheapies they did in the 80's (Coda III etc), they were so bland, if smooth on the other hand.
Just got me this:):

maybe with a top notch system driving them, but give them a typical Rega or Pro-ject type of source and a Creek or similar amp and they sent you to sleepzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzz
Give me the Celeste III/IV or Concord III/IV with body-stockings any day  or MS20's, Wharfedale 505's or even the rather hideous HB1's :D
There was a bigger 'SL-P1000' machine below the '1200'
I use the 'SL-P770' as a transport. Loverly looking machine, the press buttons are so nice to use, the shuttle controls so cool..
If you don't like it, give me first dibs will you Martin :eyebrows:
Nice one Martin!
really pissed off, I lost a radiogram earlier that only made £25 because ebay is on a go slow with my phone so my bid got froze, I had no access to pc at work.
Sorrry to hear that Jon, was their anything intresting in the radiogram?
yes a EL84 valve amp, i have contacted the seller and the other buyer had dropped out, i said i would pay more than £25 it sold for, they told me that they really thought it should of sold for more money and might relist it after getting it valued by an expert :(, so we will have to wait and see, its only 5 mins around the corner as well
But he was prepared to let it go for the finish price, whats the difference between the buyer that dropped out & you?!!! I wouldnt play games with him.It sells for what it sells for simple as that, nothings worth any of these artificially inflated price, it's worth what it sells for.. if he wants more there's such a thing as a reserve price, if he doesnt want to pay the the reserve listing fee tough sh*t. tbh i'm getting very browned orf with what things are fetching these days, time to throw in the towel with vintage gear me thinks.
It's getting ridiculous on eBay for buyers these days, I'm selling a lot just lately and frankly cannot believe what people are paying me - but that does not bode well for later on, when I want to buy something myself :( I think the number of people using eBay has increased significantly too, the number of watchers you get compared to 5 or 6 years ago is huge.
I think I bumped up the average price on Musical Fidelity A3 CDP's recently. I do very good listings, with nice photographs and people seem to pay a bit more for my gear which is mint, but now everyone lists at the price I got, even if it's ratty, at a price which is around 100 more than they went for 12 months ago! Pisses me off when they steal my well prepared text too - I now watermark my pictures as well, as they have been stolen in the past :steam:
But having said all that, I still think it's an amazing resource and I wouldn't be without it. High fees or not, what would I get at a carboot sale for my stuff and where would I find things like my Albarry PP1, which was an absolute bargain and a wonderful sounding amp. :)

Not exactly ebay, but they do seem decent vfm.
Another one of those very nice JVC Receivers goes tonight - worth a lot more than £8 - I would be dicing with death if I bought it, but must be someone out there can give it a good home...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...#ht_500wt_1156
The JRS100 was the weedy one - we sold loads of these and it was better than the increasingly grey sounding (IMO) Yamaha's and tizzy Technics equivalents..
The ones to look out for are the bigger, rarer and more powerful JRS400 and 600 models. I haven't a clue how they'd stack up today, but they were naughty looking things at the time :)
That is a lovely piece of kit.
As an aside, has anyone bought a nice old wooden radiogram and stuck modern equipment in it? Failing that, take one of those old receivers and stick a media / server PC in it. Old and the new. This is all assuming the hardware is kaput and the shell is still nice looking.
someone got a bargain
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GARRARD-30...item43a8473367
£425 is still a bit light, I reckon - usually go nearer £700 I think.
I didn't read the listing carefully enough: the cartridge was not included. That makes about £550 for the deck alone.
Garrard 301s are really getting expensive these days. I certainly wouldn't pay that amount.
I never could understand why the original grease bearing versions fetch so much. Garrard redisigned the bearing - replacing it with an oil lubricated one following requests from the BBC. Apparently, with the advent of stereo LPs, the grease bearing versions were found to have too much rumble!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=300580461151
Not sure if this is a bargain or not, but I liked the look of it.
Big wharfdales from the same seller
I spotted the Wharfedales but they're a bit too fugly for me, and I've got too many speakers already. The B&W DM1's they are selling looked nice, though.
Speaking of Wharfedale, these Linton XP2 are in extremely good shape behind the grilles. I used a set of these for years with a Pioneer receiver (RX600 ?), and sound wise they were absolutely outstanding after a cross over rebuild.
I'm going to have to bite this bullet at some point. At the time, I thought the 74-75 vintage Wharfedales (XP's especially), Leaks and small Celestions a total pile of poo compared to the KEF competition and if you wanted paper cones, then AR had it all sewn up so much better back then IMO.
I've had an itch for summat like this for some time to refurb and must scratch it before too long....
I think that you were getting confused between the LINTON 2, which was a pile of rubbish, and the far better Linton XP2.
The Linton 3XP was my first ( separates ) speaker:thumbsup:
