Bargains on ebay?

eBay prices can be crazy. I have been clearing out a few bits from my loft in the last month and decided to list a few for a laugh instead of binning them. Well, I wish I had also listed some other bits I binned prior to thinking of ebay .

£3100 for those Chartwells is total an utter nonsense - I have heard the Rogers equivilant. Good little 'speaker but I wouldn't pay more than a ton and a half even if they were mint. Crazy

It's a different market over there and to be honest the UK public have a reputation amongst international dealers of being tightwads when it comes to classic and good gear - at least that's what I pick up from people and history - hence a lot of great manufacturers gave up on the domestic market and did (and still do) export only.

It is a little crazy in the big scheme of things but then I'd say a lot less crazy than current high end with multi tens of grand speakers and turntables and Dacs - in that light, with a finite source, with increasing demand, with cache of history, nostalgia, with rarity for mint ones, it makes much more sense. And then this price is really £2000 when you factor in GBP depreciation.

These speakers are well capable of (quite politely) bringing the world to an end if you should so desire (and have the amplification).

I thought they looked horrid with grilles off, but I agree about the sonics if the A series was properly amplified

Of all the vintage ranges out there, I think Celestion has the most complete range of "old-goodies" from baby to top models. B&W have a very patchy range IMO and some of their former output could be dire as I recall. KEF too, although not as bad, certainly in the mid 70's, but these decoupled bass units ruined any sense of timing on plucked (or struck!) bass instruments, all in the sake of preventing midrange colouration... And as for some of the cheapies they did in the 80's (Coda III etc), they were so bland, if smooth on the other hand.

The Coda III were a favourite of mine from years back - not at all bland with a cheapo rough and ready CDP as the source. Lovely, rich, sumptuous bass.

maybe with a top notch system driving them, but give them a typical Rega or Pro-ject type of source and a Creek or similar amp and they sent you to sleepzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzz

Give me the Celeste III/IV or Concord III/IV with body-stockings any day or MS20's, Wharfedale 505's or even the rather hideous HB1's

My understanding is that it is the domestic version of the pro machine they did which are now like hen's teeth. Don't know if that is true - hopefully it will have some balls in the bass. If not, well it was pretty cheap.

There was a bigger 'SL-P1000' machine below the '1200'

I use the 'SL-P770' as a transport. Loverly looking machine, the press buttons are so nice to use, the shuttle controls so cool..

hopefully it will have some balls in the bass. If not, well it was pretty cheap.
