Hi Guys

Its Been a hell of a long time since i posted in the Gallery so here goes back to basics and sounding Excellent and matches well all British :)
The Sugden has the best Phono stage i think i have ever heard as you know the A28 was £30 from a private add on Facebook thus after a pot clean its in full running order now - I have a soft spot for Arcam CD players as used a 7 for years so when the 7SE came up i had to have it sounds superb the Rega is still a main part of my Vinyl front end with an RB250/Ortofon Super 10 - Upgraded Van Den Hul Bearing Oil - The Tannoy's are also going back to when i bought them in 2013 and have also been used daily and weekly since then i just love their sound for an 8 inch does everything Precise and they go super loud also i have a lot of kit around so i also swap and change regular so this is a thread that will keep being updated as and when changed cables are basic for now - Monster & Cambridge Pacific does the job..:)

An unlikely match, but I have a feeling it could be OK.

Mind you, I've no doubt a Denon PMA-350SE would match that for less than £100! Great sounding amp.

Not much point in doing the NAD/LK85 thing then. It won't be better. :D

Should be a really good match. I'm betting the Sugden will have it's work cut out to compete.

I have found the Quantum has an incredible amount power to drive the Dovedale III's so much so i have had to use a CD player with variable output sounding excellent with a Yamaha CDX 860 CD player . Ever rotating so this is what i have no put on

NAD 1030 Pre Amplifier & Sony SA H7900 Active Speakers a very odd combo but works surprisingly well this the nad pre dates from after the 3020 so about 1984 not sure anyway working very well and warming up the sony's as they have been sat a good while sound really nice with the stat tweeters and the thunderous motion active woofers just playing some massive attack and yikes i'm thinking do i really need 25 other pairs of speakers i think i done well for £17 all in for these too LOL....

dantheman91
27-04-2018, 07:43
Back to a couple of old friends then will leave this thread as is the ever rotating system is due to having a lot of gear and god knows how i got here for the love of music.

Selling off most of the collection which is sad but needs must...

Musical Fidelity E100 , Mission 770 Freedom , Rega Planar 2 , Musical Fidelity E50 Tuner "Not Pictured"

Certainly has the slam of any good basic system plays music and that is all i want it to do....its hard for me to express what i hear to put into words...

Dan,

I've just struck a deal on a few items of hi-fi and one of the components is the matching analogue tuner for this amp (TX-130L). I have no use for it, so, once I collect it all, it's yours for the cost of postage if you'd like it?

Anything good in the lot?

No worries!

The haul was the Pioneer tuner, a mid 90s Sony cassette deck, a fairly basic Kenwood A/V amplifier and.....the bit I wanted....a Yamaha CR-700 receiver.

Also mint condition Armstrong 626 came my way yesterday too could not pass at £25..time warp conditions photos later on sounded superb last night..

03-05-2018, 08:02
The Armstrong circuit designs were criticised by some, but I always thought the 5 series and 6 series sounded just fine.

I like vintage gear, had my mid-seventies Cambridge P60 on last night driving the KEF Corellis, it sounded really sublime. :)

If you like British amps of that era Dan, look out for a Lustraphone LP100. You might like that.

The other advantage with older Quad gear is that it really holds it's resale value, you're usually able to get a 'free' demo if you want it. I sold a 34 'spares/repairs' (it had lost a channel) for what I paid for it when it was fully working!

dantheman91
05-05-2018, 11:03
Hi Roy

Yep they do hold good value the 34 just had 9 logic chips & 16 caps replaced and is owned by me and the 405 my dads that has had new OP amps too though he was using a 33 but its getting on a bit now and showing signs age - still in the collection we have 2 of them but vary rarely used nowadays...

Most Quad gear does hold good value sounds very very good.

Sounding Lovely slight hiss from 303 but told its OK to use as is coming up to 8 years of ownership of them bought in December 2010 still going strong holding their value at some auctions still going for £200 + that will do lovely vintage warm sound 33 Pre is dated now but hard to find a full working one but mine is so cant grumble it still performs well though many see it as the weak link it does what it was made to do reproduction of music

Funny, that’s exactly what I did about 8 years ago. Something rare and expensive that I really wanted came and went because I didn’t have the funds. I looked at my ‘stockroom’ and realised it was full of stuff that was very nice, but that I wouldn’t really miss. Consequently I sold most of it and put the funds towards the rare ‘keepers’.

Now I only buy something if I really want it, or if it’s broken and I fancy a go at fixing it.

I have a Sony rack mount Minidisc that I love! I can’t recall how old it is? Close to 20 years maybe? I had some cheaper Sony decks, they didn’t last before they went loco. But this rack mount with XLR connections is tough! I had it in my band rack for years, but now have it in my home stereo, and use it to learn songs for the band. If I don’t own the recording, I’ve got a Bluetooth receiver connected to my auxiliary input, so I can record direct from a YouTube video to Minidisc, not great, but good enough to learn a song by. And Mini’s that I’ve made by copying from CD are amazing! Once upon a time every band member owned a Minidisc deck, and I would record every practice and pass the discs around so everyone could study them. I even had a Minidisc player indash in my car!

Are you sure Dan? I've never seen Dovedale III's with alnico magnets on the woofers. The only ones I've seen have had square ceramics, as far as I can recall.

It is possible somebody fitted earlier Dovedale drivers as replacements though. If so, it may be an idea to check impedances, as the older ones were 15 or 16 ohm and not the later 4/8 ohm.

Late afternoon session yesterday and i found the PM4 a perfect match for the MA16 very lucid and sweet sounding from a range of CD's from Peter Gabriel , Elton John and Crosby Still Nash & Young found a few things that i have never heard they are a bit bass light but with the loudness on soon cured this a fantastic listen i could live with it i am very happy the PM4 is bought for sharing now and owned by both my and my dad.....

Will run for longer in Class A later on but very tricky with a lab doing to walk around between rooms...

Trying to remember what amps I had at the time/tried them with? They were certainly a bit vague with a Quad 306 using a Quad 77 as a pre (&, I think, with the 77 itself). Can't really compare though, the Prologues are a whole different animal to the ones you've got & intended more for AV use rather than 'Hifi'.

Foams are here for the IMF's :)

Very carefully! :)

Seriously, if the cones move back and forth freely without the coils rubbing, don't worry about shimming as the rear spiders are still concentric to the magnet gap.

Just clean the old foam off the chassis and cone carefully. Probably best just scraped off with a craft knife or similar.

Bond the new surrounds evenly to the cones first as you can then move them around a bit on the chassis lip to centralise them. If you're not sure about positioning, hold them in place with a few blobs of BluTak until you're happy, then tack glue them in three equally spaced positions, allow to dry then bond the rest. Use a small art brush to apply adhesive. Most seem to use water based PVA, I prefer Aleene's Tacky Glue, also water based.

Does the O ring need to come off to glue the foam to the chassis on the out edge...?

Yes. I take it you mean the trim ring. Remove it by slipping a blade under it and separating it gently from the chassis rim. Clean it carefully for re-use. It's probably fairly fragile.

Yes this going to attempt a try at doing it but if not they will be going on a trip to Bournemouth mids are glued in dont want to wreck to cabs by trying to remove it

Yes. Get the cone edge as clean as you can. Be patient and take your time.

I'm betting the drivers are not glued in. No doubt there's some mastic like sealant gripping them. If you have any plastic window frame fitting wedges, you could try tapping a few in around the chassis and leaving them for a while. I reckon the mid drivers will loosen and lift free.

Sure are getting better and better with each listen even hearing some things i have never hear before and i own 2 sets of good Tannoys and to say they will be my reference speaker from now on is saying something i think you would need to spend thousands to have this level of quality today thats truly why i love vintage HI FI theirs is stuff you just cannot beat today and im using Technics and to think what they would be like something British excites me even more the cleanest speakers i have ever heard on Vinyl too...

Good to hear you are loving your IMFs Dan. As I think I mentioned to you (in another thread?) I also got my IMFs (ALS30) back up and running (https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?60088-IMF-ALS30&p=1035205#post1035205) and they sure are good. Nice tight sound all round with incredible bass considering their size. I'm now limbering up to do a recap which ought to bring them up a great deal.

What's the background to your IMFs and have the caps been done? (sorry if you said already).

dantheman91
02-12-2018, 22:00
Hi Edward

Will be making the remainder payment for the tisbury wednesday....

The history of my IMFs are i think they have been barely used as they are showing no signs of sound deterioration at all honestly they are top notch i dont think doing the caps on my ones would make a difference but who knows i bought them from a lady doing a house clear in a very wealthy area of bournemouth so much so i had to pay over what they were listed for just to get my hands on them due to the phone calls she had at the time but only £30 over so a stonking bargain they were a month of waiting and they have delivered superb results....will be running a Quad 405 and Tisbury ASAP...

Can not describe how happy i am.

Thank You
Daniel

Hopefully you have some solid stands as this will provide for great definition.

Hi Martin

Will be trying a mixed array in the next few days next up will be Quad.

They date from 1980 @ £351 new and worked out what they would cost in today's money comes to £1,461.86 :)

Yep not bargain basement. But IMFs are rich and full sounding, a combination of the design and the drivers used. So the tight, lean sound that is characteristic of Technics amps balances that out. At least that's my theory!

Guys on a 2MV phono stage is it fine to use Moving Magnet Cartridges or is it just for MC as thinking of buying another nytech and the phono stage says 2mv just want to know

Thanks

Firebottle
23-12-2018, 08:30
It really depends what the loading is as to the MC MM suitability. I am pretty sure the Nytech is an MM input, as I had a Nytech years ago.

2mV is quite sensitive for MM.

dantheman91
23-12-2018, 10:33
Hi Alan

Cheers for the info much appreciated ususaly if a Nytech has an MC card it would say either MC1 or MC2 so this should be OK for MM...:)

dantheman91
24-12-2018, 18:42
I bought the Nytech guys for some reason its only playing in MONO on CD tried another link plug and still the same any thoughts on what the issue could be its cost enough already no the MONO switch is not on as i stupidly tested and said it was OK i can no longer return the item.

Any thoughts?

01-01-2019, 13:15
Yes agree Quad 303's were a very nice power amp - they have a really nice stereo presentation that other Quad power amps like 405's cannot do -
although a 306 per channel is also extremely good. As for attenuation - probably no need for me to say.

Hi Geoff

They are odd and i cannot find anything on them although a friend says they were expensive when new and they are very heavy using the foundation stands they look superb - I know the american Benchmark but these are not related the are made in Bristol - 4 Ohm so amplifier specific the denon runs 4 to 16 ohm so ideal very very impressed with playback the bass for their size is truly staggering deep and tuneful and all for £70 from a friend he knew nothing of them too we drive them with a Pioneer A77X we were blown away.

Xovers are at the back outside the cabinet too..
