Great info Here: https://bte-designs.weebly.com/bte-designs-passive-preamplifiers.htmlHe uses all sorts of pots in his designs according the the customer's needs/budget so it will depend on that. I had a cheapie of his once and while it was fine for what it was, it was never going to set the world on fire

I came across this Yamaha RX 350 on a local ad this morning for £20 so i whipped round the corner to collect its a rather lovely unit and a so called sleeper of the Natural Sound series which is true i'm most impressed with in driving my Rogers LS7's - made between 1990 - 1992 40 watts - Built in Tuner which looks excellent and sounds it too - The guy has a few more bits for sale so watch this space he won't let his Celestion Ditton 66's go though Damn  who can blame him - Nice chap he was :)

Fantastic - The HIFIME DAC is an interesting bit of kit with the Pioneer feeding it the slam and scale this little thing offers is damn impressive for £50 i wasn't expecting much but it blows the Project into the weeds i wanted a go to DAC for the 505 and I've found the best match so far this is all budget kit with a high end performance pedigree i would like to hear it against the more expensive kit thought the precisions are holding their own value wise - Watch this space finally invested in storage to keep it all :)

I would be interested in your findings as the Pioneer was one of the few moving coil cartridge designs that had a replaceable stylus. Unfortunately because of that, the sound performance was compromised and the cartridge received some indifferent reviews.

Interesting guess experimentation is key think I'll be good ultimately my choice of what i choose but others opinion on them on a Facebook group they recommend Audiolab Monos , and Krell as the designers of the SL series used them for testing Yikes  reading the HI Fi news review its not recommended to drive them above 200 WPC from manufacturer

watch this space :):) the thrill is trying legendary kit such as the SL's a beautiful and revolutionary design IMHO :)

Back to the SL6's

First impressions were rather dull with the Technics 909 pre and Power but feed them a smidge of current and they came alive with believe it or not the NAD 3020 :) they are special in the dynamics fantastic :)

Set them up with the Onkyo Integra A 810 Watts is a myth current is key with these sounding good but the Nad is still winning at the moment - looking out for an Audiolab 8000A plenty of choice on the bay watch this space

Nothing wrong with the tweeters at all. This is one driver where some judicious crossover component upgrades really do make a difference.

I went to buy some speakers once, thirty odd years ago, so I can't recall what they were.

The bloke played me some awful synthy stuff, all top end, and says to me 'I think they sound pretty good.'

I spied a copy of Eagles 'Greatest Hits' and asked 'Would you put that on?' He ummed and ahhed and was really reluctant but in the end he did. Right from the off it was obvious that the bass coil was rubbing badly on both units. He was a bit embarrassed at being caught out.

dantheman91
15-01-2022, 11:25
I have only just just go round to properly inspecting and testing They were playing this morning at low level and I'm sure i heard a rattle so checked the cone and low and behold its rubbing badly these are early ones so finding a replacement is not possible one on ebay but the SI and won't fit -

A different pair altogether the collector failed to collect that pair.

I thought so it i would buy a properly checked over pair which they were caps checked and drivers described as perfect but unfortunately had i not heard the rattle and checked me being me i knew something wasn't right when i check damn lucky to find a spare they seller used to work for Celestion looking like the seller is willing to pay for the cost of the new spare driver and i send my faulty driver into Ditton works see if he can repair that one :)

Update on the duff SL6 it appears that from factory it wasn't properly finished - The surround that was supposed to be cut was glued to the chassis therefor tighter causing a bit of coil rub he's hopeful he can fix a bizzar one

Anyway the SL6's are up a running and sounding Fantastic on the Marantz PM4 , Pioneer 505 Precision , HIFI ME DAC - they do Pop , Jazz and Acoustic superbly well :) Very impressed with them on the end of a Luxman SQ 507X too :) Synergy was in the room

Well the SL6 love was very short lived as one speaker is cutting in and out out output on a receiver swapped channels and stayed with the speaker so its the speaker at fault the replacement driver was professionally soldiered in strange fault to have any thoughts?

If the sound cuts in and out, it's quite likely to be something simple, like a faulty soldered joint perhaps.

I didn't think anything ever went at yours unless it was unrepairable??

If it's that Phillips mech with the common acidic grease issue then it's a bit fiddly but not impossible, I did it on an Arcam Delta transport once I think it was.

Nowhere near as fiddly as replacing the belts on a Marantz CD94 MKii that was some job!

Jon Atkinson from Stereophile used some for years with a Krell KSA50 so they are rated as serious - or were.

I've never understood hard core fanbases developing around small two-way speakers though. They can only ever be good up to a point. Some weren't even that.

Yeah they're not budget they were high end in the normal Hifi scene of the time.

Allowing for inflation they would cost about £1200 today. Maybe not quite 'high end' price-wise (you can pay ten grand for a miniature speaker these days) but certainly no-where near a budget speaker.

Maybe because I didn't live in a big city then I was a student who browsed in Richer Sounds and Sevenoaks, but that was high end in my day

Yes it was for me too. I was only able to get the A2 when Celestion got bought out and Hyper-Fi were selling the A2 and the A3 new at a third of list price.

Not sure where I found the money for that now I think about it. I was going to get the A3 then decided it would have too much bass and that the A2 would be just as good. Wrong - as I found out later but then I didn't really know anything back then.

Is that the original SL6 with copper dome tweeter or the SL6S with hhe silver dome tweeter ? The original SL6 was by far the best sounding. I had them with the Cliff Stone dedicated Foundation stands. The Celestion stands were MDF and horrible hence Foundation making a dedicated stand. The sound quality at the time was in a league of its own for the money and as for driving them my Musical Fidelity A100 at 50watts class A did an excellent job. Now if you can find some SL600 and the stands and find a sub that works with them or if you can find the SL6O00 system then you are in for a sound that is simply stunning!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220709/be53f8f6587ef58301969e537e2503bb.jpg

I quite agree, quality rather than just brut welly, I would not have ever described them as thin sounding the midrange and high frequency was detailed and natural but a lot of speakers at the time were on the warm side which matched well with a lot of very bright and thin transistor amps, which is probably the reason that they may have been seen that way. On stands with good amplification they were certainly capable of more than the sum of thier parts.

I feel sorry for the people who sell hifi on eBay without being aware how easy it is to damage it in the post, or don't know how bad most courier services are.

Less sympathy for the business sellers who do know though if they want to get a higher price by offering postage they know the risk they are taking.

Still bad to see great kit getting damaged either way.

That Jazz-Funk album takes me back to the days when I was a mere youf and spent a lot of my evenings when living at home in London frequenting the likes of The Lyceum Ballroom in the Strand for Monday Jazz-Funk nights, and other venues at other times in Kings Road Chelsea, Putney and other places that I can't now remember:scratch:

Sadly the genre became too sanitised and formulaic and was widely dubbed "elevator music" with good reason.

my brother had an Alba all in one thing, turntable, tuner, double tape deck amp and three band EQ. He got it out the catalogue. I told him to go to Richer Sounds and get a TT, amp and speakers for the same money but he reckoned he was getting better value with the Alba since it also had the tape deck and tuner for the same money.

Needles to say sound quality was dire, the turntable was made out of recycled tic-tac boxes, the back panel was just a sheet of hardboard and the whole unit failed a couple of weeks past the warranty.

Rarely see the 11s the 9s and the 14s come up. The 14s are basically the same but save you buying a stand. They might have a bit more volume but the base is a separate chamber you can mass load so not as much in it as it looks.
