The tweeter looks like a grille-less version of the alloy dome used in their R852 MD and other models. Made by Elac I think, not a bad unit.

Verry nice indeed hearing those Hi Hats on 80's electronica

Rarely see the 11s the 9s and the 14s come up. The 14s are basically the same but save you buying a stand. They might have a bit more volume but the base is a separate chamber you can mass load so not as much in it as it looks.

A rarety it seems placed them on solid stands need to be raised @ ear hight to sound right impressive boxes

The tweeter looks like a grille-less version of the alloy dome used in their R852 MD and other models. Made by Elac I think, not a bad unit.It actually has a grille. The earlier Monitor 9/11/14 had the same grille as the 852MD and the later one has a finer wire based grille rather than a solid dome grill with holes in. I've owned both in the past.

They then released the MkII gold with the square plate, but there was an intermediate gold tweeter with the rectangular plate. I had the MkII but not the intermediate one. Always wanted to try it but I've moved on (upwards) now before I could get one.

I can't live with these speakers any more they are just too coloured in the bass (cabinet resonance I think). I might still be able to live with the R952MD though, that was a nice speaker.

Built with one of 3 different output voltage I think, 5V, 12V, 19V?

Do you know what voltage it is, or can you measure it with a meter?

3A fuse in the mains lead and they have a phono socket input that accepts a signal from any normal preamplifier. There’s a three position switch underneath them (L-R-LINE) and, if you’re using them like this then the switch needs to be set to ‘LINE’ on both speakers.

When you plug them in, an LED at the bottom front behind the grille should light red to show they are in standby mode. When you play some music, they should detect the signal, switch on, the LED will go green and you should hear music. When the music stops, they’ll switch back to standby automatically after a few minutes.

They’re nice, sweet sounding speakers but they don’t do big volume or thunderous bass! Mine are in the dining room and are great for background music over dinner or the radio when I’m working from home. They were originally mainly used in B&O systems as extension speakers in a second room, or as rear channels in a surround sound setup, with either Beolab 8000s or Pentas on the front channels.

The Supratek has been looked over it powers up and works on quick bench test from tech test he's sourcing a GZ34 and a pair of 6SN7GT needs to go back in for the valves to be fitted and tested again to make sure all is good to use

Watch this space it might need to be sold as valve equipment for me is just to high maintenance we'll see :)

My old Leak Stereo 20 power amps had a right old mismatched selection of EL84 valves in and still sounded great without issues.

I can understand your dilemma. I bought a pair 50 years ago. They were used: I think I paid £50 for them. One of them sounded a bit 'off ', so I took them to Quad in Huntingdon. for diagnosis and repair if necessary.

Sadly Quad, can no longer service them, and the only people who have the original jigs to do the job are Quad Musikwiedergabe in Germany. In this country, One Thing Audio offers a refurbishment service using their own panel design, but they do not sound quite the same.

If you were to take them to Quad these days they would just send them to One Thing Audio for the work to be done.

The only resistance that is measurable is the heaters, they are low resistance when cold.

Diamond 9.0 as you say great little speakers, which should fill most rooms nicely if paired with a little sub - I bought a couple of pairs for my daughter's hairdresser shop a couple of years ago. They barely got any use, and now she's moved premises, so guess who now has these boxes cluttering the house?

I might try one pair, together with my sub, in my second system, in place of my old Celestion 5s. The others I'll stick on here for sale when I have time. You might have been a bit too early for a bargain Dan - sorry about that. But still a bargain at £59.

Macca

friend of mine used Diamond IV in a 14 x 36 room with no problems. Maybe could have done with subs too but that was back in the flat earth days when subwoofers were something only demented Americans used and were not considered 'hi-fi'

But for rock and pop music bass depth was adequate and they could reach acceptable levels without breaking up even in that huge space.

Those big ports look odd a TL usually has a slot port. They are the same size as the driver but I can't see any screw holes if any have been removed. Interesting design anyway.

JPWs Sounding great had the B250's repaired by a local engineer :) dry glue and realignment

These were designed by David Lyth of VOLT to show what VOLT could do at demo shows then taken on by Wilmslow they are known as "The Boxer" hard to put a year and value on them but I'll have them for £25

I got mine in 1998, I remember as it was not long after I moved into this house and needed something with a bit more wallop than Mission 731s

No idea where I found £200 to buy them, I think that was almost two weeks wages for me back then.

The 602 are even better but the 603 floorstander I recall being a bit lumpy.

I bought a pair of the 603s in 1996. Cost me £499 and my then wife was not best pleased. I didn't find them to be 'lumpy', but then I was using them in a decent sized room, fed by a Musical Fidelity Electra E100 which had some clout. After some time I decided that I actually preferred the MA R352s they replaced. Too late.

What you have there Dan are the S1s, with the gold coloured tweeters with the ineffective protection around them. Very rare to find a pair that had escaped infant fingers, including mine.

A good all rounder from sessions with Rock , Metal , Reggae , Pop and Jazz they seem to handle anything thrown at them :) built with Tannoy's own made drivers they punch out some bass for the size you would think they were a larger box

Remember those coming out, couldn't afford them.

Looks like they need close to wall position, no toe-in. You could try putting something heavy on top, bricks or whatever, see if you can damp those cab resonances?

Port is tuned low should get 40Hz out of them in room, not bad about the same as a lot of big floorstanders.

Good tip will look into it very good speaker if matched well after a session with the Pioneer A616MK2 the Titanium tweeters are too bright back to the Marantz PM4 Class A a naturally bright speaker they loved the Nytech 252 that made them sing :) they need a smoother roll off response keeping them for a bit see if they make the collection

Good find - the Shure M95ED is/was a good cartridge.

Agree with you about the 4-pin Belling & Lee connector of the SME 3000 series arms. You do occasionally see them for sale, but they are very expensive.
You might consider having the connector base of the arm changed to one using RCA phono sockets. There are plenty of kits to do this available from Ebay. That way you can use an interconnect lead of your choice (if you are into cable swapping).

iI thought they might be. :)

I do have some experience of a Lenco design, namely that of the Goldring G99 turntable. The G99 was built by the UK audio company Goldring following a design made by the Swiss company Lenco, and using their unique arrangement of a vertical idler wheel running on a horizontal tapered motor shaft which allows a continuous speed adjustment.

I wrote about it here: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?10774-For-one-week-only-the-Goldring-G99-turntable-and-Decca-arm-and-cartridge. You might find it of some interest, although the arm and cartridge used are completely different.

I think I bought it on your behalf from a friend of mine. I can remember coming out to your place to deliver it, and being amazed at the amount of classic audio gear you have collected. Guys, Dave has two rooms full of classic gear in a building separate from his house. And some of it is unique: a double Transcriptors TT anybody!?

But getting back to the G99, yes it was a deliberate attempt to rival the Garrard 301 and 401 turntables. IMO the 301 is overrated; but the same could be said by others of the Thorens TD124.

Wakefield Turntables
23-01-2026, 20:22
The G99 is just a Lenco GL75 in fancy clothes. Any PTP Lenco will better any G99 nowadays due to better isolation of the motor from the plinth and cartridge.

Remind me a bit of those Yamaha ear shaped flat speakers. Did they actually claim that having the driver the same shape as the ear made them sound better??

I think the idea of the asymmetry was to break up flexural modes of the diaphragm, just as asymmetry breaks up listening room resonances. Having an 'ear shape' was probably just a foible by the Yamaha design team.

These 1970's speakers are described as "Yamaha NS-230 Dipole Sandwich Speakers Piano Department Ear Shaped Driver". Yamaha also make pianos, so maybe the unusual shape was suggested by the piano department.

I seen to recall they were originally designed to go with their organs so maybe something got lost in translation?
