Well done! As soon as you are able, replace the decidedly inferior LM301 chip with a TL071 or better, upgrade the +/- 12V supply voltage dropping resistors with 1W rated equivalents and fit a couple of decoupling capacitors as close as possible to the chip supply pins. It will all make for an enormous improvement in SQ.

I didn't pay any. I've not paid charges on anything from China recently, although my purchases have been under thirty quid.

You'll have to wait for it though, usually about three weeks.

For low value items no vat or duties are payable. The threshold for vat is £15 and for duties it is £135.

I've found that often HMRC don't bother with items marginally over the thresholds. YMMV

Afternoon fun The Wharfedale Dovedale 3 / Tisbury Passive / Quad 405 excellent through in a Sony CDP S1 excellent definition and stonking bass the 405 is by far the best match for the rough and ready dovedales. I will admit I'm stacked full with speakers Kef / Tannoy / Ruark / ARC / IMF / and more ���� yikes + a 20+ amp collection :cool:

The equaliser looks like a tape loop and it's not clear it will attenuate the volume. If it did the equaliser world hardly have any bars at low volume and you wouldn't be able to see the flashing lights!

Best thing is to use the Tisbury into the CD input or whatever at a low volume then turn it up slowly to see if the amp volume is also working. Take the out from the equaliser into your power amp.

Afternoon Gerry it's Going really well I see the similarities with regarded to the leak stereo 20 my dad had one in 2011 but he had to sell at the time
Been using the Audio Note / Rogers and now trying the very sweet Ruark Talisman in love with all I have tried will be trying more during the next week This is the end game for me amplifier wise it's an astonishing bit of kit the price was a bargain very very happy indeed . The Dan cave is something I have worked on with different levels of kit some of it rare indeed sure impresses folk I'm done now the collection is complete.

EL84 have been my favourite power valve for a long time, I just love their clear open naturalness and control. And the LA Audio amp is a very good implementation, imho.
But I'm done with valves now, I think.

If you are capable. Get the cabs refinished & a nice Black finish on the baffle board instead of that cheap matt blackboard paint finish..Easy enough job cos those Baffle boards should be screwd into the cabinet..

You'll need a dac with variable digital output. I might be wrong but best to check first before plugging them in and potentially blowing them :) or try some quiet chamber music at first.

A laptop into a HiFace might allow you the control you need, or a pro DtoD convertor (if such a thing exists) but you really want the digital controller.

I might have completely the wrong end of the stick so maybe Google it first.

The DSS930 speakers were originally sold with the DSC950BK Digital Signal Contoller, a digital preamp if you will, which accepts 7 digital or analog sources with the option that two may be optical. The controller also includes a 42-key IR remote. With the DSC950BK one can connect up to 12 speaker pairs and/or 3 clusters for multiroom applications with independent volume and tone for each cluster.

Typically a single connector is run from the DSC950BK to one of the speakers and another lead run from speaker to speaker. The digital signal automatically sorts out left channel from right. From an opinion stanpoint the DSS930 speakers have an exceptionally clean, uncolored sound, very similar to the Mackie HR626 near-field monitors and the Meridian DSP5000C. I would personally opt to add a subwoofer at some point. Their strongpoint is clarity and neutrality of sound rather than volume so I would not use them to move the dust at home.

The Isophase tweeter is driven by a dedicated 20W continuous/ 40W peak. The two 5.25-inch polypropelene woofers are driven by a similar 80W/320W amplifier. They will accept any standard digital signal input but you must have the speakers' remote or your power output will be FULL! Sampling freqencies accepted are 32, 44.1 and 48kHz. D/A converters (low, high frequencies): differential bitstream, 128x oversampling. S/N ratio: up to 100dB.

I am fairly familiar with these speakers, having used them for several years, and actually will be helping a friend sell a set with the DSC950BK before selling my own DSC950BK. I hope the information helps.

Upon switching on my LA Audio A30 valve amplifier this morning one of the valves from the right channel was not lighting up so i swapped it for another EL 84 and still the same problem still no light beginning to think its the amp that has the fault swapped for the other good valves to still no joy? We bit down in the dumps about this - any thoughts on repair?

I was advised that it is not always a good idea to power them up with a failed valve or circuit in case it overloads elsewhere, but you should be OK. The repair hopefully will be relatively cheap on parts.

I want to use a Technics SU-C909U as a pre with the quad 405 only trouble is the pre takes power from the technics 909 power amp is their a way so I can just power the pre to use with the 405. Interesting :scratch:

There might be two ways to do this. The power connection from the power amp to the preamp appears to be a DC feed as the connecting lead looks like it has DC power plugs on it (this is from looking at pics by googling) If you have a multimeter you could measure the voltage from the socket on the power amp and get a separate supply to pwer the pre.

OR you use it as is and take the L & R channels from the Pre-out sockets on the rear to the inputs on the 405. The power amp will of course remain powered up, but that should not present a problem unless Technics say that it should not be run without a load attached, i.e speakers.

If that lead coming out is carrying mains it appears to be coming out of the amp between two metal plates with no physical protection around it - when those sharp edges finally cut through the cable and short the Live conductor to the case, it's going to go bang, and so will you if you're touching it at the time!

I wouldn't even think of plugging it in until you've opened it up and made sure everything is safe. If whoever built it did something silly like they have with that lead, christ knows what other disasters could be hidden inside.

One of the terminals needs replacing on one of the Chesters i have bought a new Old stock pair i only need the - one from the set i know to take the 2528 driver out to get to the cross over but fitting the terminal i need some advice looking like the 2 bolts need to be undone from the terminals as well as the 5 Philips screws holding on to the back plate are they simply undo the bolts and refit the terminal?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Dan, from memory, you should find the terminal plate/panel comes out easily once unscrewed. You'll obviously need to unsolder the wires from the crossover. The terminal posts are 'keyed' to prevent rotation and they have long shanks, so are not easily replaceable with alternatives. It's a good job you found genuine NOS items.

I'll wait to have the one repaired i have booked it in with my tech for the near future - Yep the Terminals were purchased from Mainly Tannoy at a very fair price and a proper T165 fit as per photo on the listing a rare find watch this space - :)

I've used Aleene's Tacky Glue on Tannoys in the past. It's water based and mating faces remain movable for a while, works a treat! Apply it with a small art brush. It can be thinned with water if required.

If you don't have a spare, separate the trim ring from the front of the rubber cone surround very carefully for re-use before removing the cone itself. The rear cone spider is held in with screws, make sure the washers don't get into the coil gap or you'll have big problems.

You don't need to remove the gauze dust cap and shim the coil central as some suggest. It is easy enough to get right by feel and a bit of judicious jiggling.

The coil rub has been fixed by the Technician no need for the NOS but have a spare one - :) Next up he just need's to fit the terminal - then a good dab of wood varnish / polish to finish them up then they are making way into my collection - :) -

Last cabinets I did was with Rustins clear satin water based varnish after a rub down first. It was applied with a cloth pad and came up beautifully after waxing, dead easy to apply, two thin coats is enough.

IMO, there are not many speakers that beat the 'Tannoy Sound'. Not had an Orelle amp (only had an Orelle CDP) but they certainly knew how to take things up high and I'm sure they are a great match for the Chesters. As you say goosebump territory.

I think this amp is auto-bias mate and yes just swap all L&R channels at the same time, don't really want different brands on each side.

Of course its up to you but I don't think it needs to leave your gaff!

I mean if it's only barely lit compared to others being bright I'd think again but if it just seems a bit 'dull' in comparison it's unlikely an actual issue.

You could also swap the non illuminated tube for one that does illuminate more in another socket, then you can determine if it is the tube or the amp. Again if it is auto bias and sounds okay, I wouldn't worry too much. Also if they are NOS tubes and haven't been used before they will change a bit (as I'm sure you know). I'd leave it on for a couple of hours and have a listen, any loud crackling/imbalance and I'd switch off and have a rethink.

Hi Dan, can't see too well in that picture to be honest but if it sounds okay, it probably is. It's possible there is a slight spec difference within the tube and your amp is compensating by slightly under powering it I guess. Like I say keep an eye on it and if it gets dimmer or things start to sound off take it out. Like I say could try swapping them round and see if its the socket (amp) or the tube.

One of the Mullard's was faulty so he popped in a replacement fully tested EL 84 that was it £20 later - I have no ideal if originals or not but they sound superb i think they all are NOS but not sure - Much improved as to what was originally tubes were used much sweeter now - :) again a legendary British Valve £85 for a set of 4 total

Sure is a Sleeper i bloody love em Bargain at £57 - Top top if you have no original remote The Sky Q the touch remote works the volume - Go to settings and choose Denon hey presto - Same with the Pioneer A300R Precision

Yeah, I like a sleeper. Quad 306 was one of my favs, gone up a bit lately, still brilliant though!

Completely agree about the 306. One of my best ever bargain buys! I use it all the time for relaying music (in tandem with my Croft) from my upstairs system, to downstairs through the vintage Ditton 15s, which it marries with beautifully - and so far it's completely un-modded!:)

Numark TT 1510 - Stanton 500 Cartridge - throw anything on it it will play but of cheap and nasty fun light as a feather literally - Sounds decent enough will be using in another cheap as chips no thrills spills system for fun

If you ever spot a Rogers Ravensbrook amp, try it. Very sweet sound, better than the bigger Ravensbourne. DIN connections on them.

Interesting on the NAD phase - it does happen - Using 3020 as a Pre on occasions - The 350's are commanding £100+ nowadays best get one before they are even more folk are catching on to just how good they are -

The council are doing the 5 yearly check of the electrics tomorrow so the standby kit providing the music and I'm surprised how musical it sounds for not a lot of money its on a shoestring that's the fun

Why do you have to have a system 'on standby' whilst the electrics are being tested? Does it run on batteries?

Reading the specification for the Onkyo amplifier (despite the comical translation), the power consumption can be as high as 200W. I would therefore recommend that the necessary step down transformer has a considerably higher power rating (I would go for 400 - 500W).

Steer well clear of this one. Given its size and the warnings about not using it with certain items, it is almost guaranteed that it is not a transformer-based item, but instead a high frequency switching circuit that generates a stepped-down voltage.

These often add high frequency spikes onto the supply and can damage connected equipment, so stick with a good quality transformer-based item. Barry's shout of Airlink is an excellent choice - I also use them and this one would be spot on: https://airlinktransformers.com/product/japan-uk-voltage-converter-uk-ja0500

This is a 500VA unit - they also do a 250VA that would probably be fine, but the 500VA is only £8 more, so seems a no-brainer.

You could get your tech to fit a proper bucking transformer so correct voltage supplied without the need for 'attachments'.

I've had them fitted to Ming Da amplifiers (as they are often Japanese voltage).

That one on ebay says for use with 'light portable electronic devices'. Deffo steer clear as Beobloke says!

Credit where credit is due. It was Jamie who mentioned Airlink, not me. All I did was to suggest any the step down transformer used, ideally should have about double the power capacity as that of the device it is powering.
