I believe it is a state of mind and an approach to evaluating hi-fi systems
I associate the term negatively with hi-fi made by Linn or Naim
If you want flat earth only Linn or Naim will do.

seriously though, i cant help but relate it to the human race's exceptance that the world was flat, and that if you went too far near the edge you would fall off! obviously that atitude quickly changed once the world had been explored properly! so, if we are going to refer to this flat earth slogan as an asset, please,,, those that know its true meaning explain it to us dafties.

Before Linn released the LP12 in 1973, which was basically an Ariston RD11, many hi-fi companies had promoted electrical specifications as indicative of their products performance.
Conventional wisdom at the time in the hi-fi community was that the loudspeaker was the most important part of a hi-fi system. Linn championed the "source-first" approach, arguing that, whilst a system was only as good as its weakest link, the most important part of any system was the source.
Linn had focused on its products ability to reproduce the elements of music as judged subjectively - sometimes referred to as "PRAT" for pace, rhythm and timing - or, in Linn's terminology, "pitch accuracy".
Since many of the principles Linn subscribed to were thought to be heretical, or flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Linn/Naim aficionados were nicknamed "Flat Earthers", sometimes affectionately, sometimes derogatorily.
Juat a little bit of history explaining where I beleive the term "Flat Earthers" originated from! Might be of some help to those that are not sure of the term from an Hi-Fi perspective.
