The english patient on blu ray last night....a favourite of my good lady. Juliet Binoche aint too hard on the eye!!

Contextual accuracy and continuity are critical. I pick up on all the mistakes relating to machines. Planes, bikes and cars, etc. Many US movies featured Japanese two stroke bikes and of course the yanks always played a recording of a big four stroke Harley on the soundtrack. What crap!

Planes too. On occasion you see a plane taking off in a film and you (or at least I) know that it's a piston engined job and you hear a gas turbine sound. Again, crap!

Recent Kia car commercials have had a car zooming about to the soundtrack of a beefy V6 engine and I know for a fact the thing has a piddly little four cylinder motor.

Yes. I am pickier than most! And probably a bit more technically minded with machinery.

This is a classic example of the late Alexander Pope's observation that 'Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise'. I have zero knowledge of such technical gibbons, so incongruities such as those you describe don't bother in the slightest. Ironically, I rarely watch war films.

If the acting and direction are good enough, I can suspend disbelief quite easily, so even if I'm intellectually aware of a historical inaccuracy, that doesn't spoil my enjoyment, whereas ham acting or clunky direction certainly would.

Just finished: Escape to athena from 1979 with a very good cast but a slender plot. Still its quite good and Stefanie Powers was drop dead gorgeous.


...NOW, "Kind Hearts and Coronets" from 1949... Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood and Dennis Price star in one of the great films of our time. Guinness plays multiple members of the aristocratic D'ascoyne family all targets of Price's rage. All superbly done and in the scene where six members of the D'Ascoyne family, all played by Alec Guinness, are seen together, it took two days to film. The camera was set on a specially built platform to minimize movement. In addition, the camera operator Jeff Seaholme spent the night with the camera to ensure that nothing moved it by accident. A frame with six black matte painted optical flat glass windows was set in front of the camera and the windows opened one at a time so each of the characters could be filmed in turn. The film was then wound back for the next character. Most of the time was spent waiting for Guinness to be made up as the next character.

Too true Barry.. superb film and the restored Blu-Ray is fantastic............ as for the film, do NOT tell the truth in your memoirs and then leave them on the table when you leave.

Now my all-time favourite film "Hobson's Choice" starring Sir John Mills, Brenda De Banzie and Charles Laughton as Henry Hobson. ..what can be said but ...PERFECTION.... David Lean directed and I believe Mills said it was HIS fav too so i am in good company

Tonight's main attraction is Powell & Pressburger's 1943 film; " The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" starring Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr, Anton Walbrook and a fairly large role for John Laurie of Dad's Army fame later in his career. of that show he once remarked that it was the biggest load of rubbish he was ever in lol

Prime Minister Winston Churchill hated this film and tried to have it banned. He was not alone in his condemnation as "right-wing sociologists E. W. and M. M. Robson produced a pamphlet called "The Shame and Disgrace of Colonel Blimp" ....... all because a German was shown in a good light. Martin Scorsese help fund the restoration for this blu-ray version which is a delight in every way. One of the 2 "P"'s greatest achievements.
