    Since it is my suggestion for the Album Club, it would be silly not to - a damned fine it is too. (In fact I think this is one of the finest recordings made of the Grieg piano concerto!)

    A couple of us here though it would be a good idea to submit some Classical music to the Album Club to 'widen the horizons' so to speak. Perhaps you might like to contribute?

    Sigh - I keep trying lieder, but it's no good, I just don't really enjoy it!

    A fine singer, though, and I am much in admiration of her recording of Strauss' 4 Last Songs.

    Have you tried the Mahler Ruckert-Lieder? I may have played you one of them by Yvonne Minton. Lovely.

    That 'Carmina' is easily my reference - I have 8 versions.

    I would be interested to know about the Bruckner Quartet. I did not know he had written one. I like his String Quintet so I would be interested in your impression of the Quartet

    Bruckner's string quartet is a very early piece, and is usually dismissed by snooty critics.
    It is very different from the String Quintet.

    But I think it is wonderful! - full of sad, beautiful melodies!

    Here's my fave recording, with the Keller string quartet playing on an Onyx LP, not available on CD as far as I know.
    It would sound great on your Marantz/Benz tt rig, Andrei!

    I've no idea if it's available for download. ---



    There are quite a few CD recordings of the piece, but none are anywhere near as good as that LP, imo.
    It comes up on eBay now & then for a few £ - there are some expensive ones on Euro eBay at the moment, but it shouldn't be long before a cheaper one comes along. Well worth getting!

    This CD has been on my shelves for years - very well received by critics - and every now and then I dust it off and try again.
    Nope - last night once again it failed to make much of an impression.
    Ah well - I'll try again in 2015.

    Yummm -- this is more like it.
    Bought yesterday, an Oxfam £1.99 LP bargain -->

    'Sad, beautiful melodies' sounds like my cup of tea. It still surprises me that there is so much difference between the LP and CD of the same music ... usually favouring the LP but not always. I suspect it has as much to do with the mastering as the format. I'll keep an eye out for it as I am much taken with the quintet.

    On cassette tape - NOS sealed in a charity shop for 25p.
    And it sounds very nice indeed.
    Unusual music - the Bach sonatas & partitas for solo violin, but with piano accompaniment added by Robert Schumann!



    A truly phenomenal recording of the Liszt piano sonata on a nice & minty LP.
    Great sq, too.

    Followed by a very fine LP of Elgar 1st symphony.
