No. I've not heard Brabbins - I assume you rate it highly?
My other faves are Previn (EMI) and Fremaux. I've heard quite a few others, but they don't really compete, for me. (eg, Previn (Telarc), Litton, Slatkin, Davis, Boult, Mackerras, Daniel, Walton)

I like Brabbins a lot, Jerry. Another (interesting) performance is Haitink on EMI - quite "ponderous" but strangely compelling. His slow movement is a masterclass in control at very slow tempi (very good recording, too).Originally Posted by jandl100

Whoa - a very fine Brahms 4 from Ashkenazy. I'd never even heard of his set before I cam across this CD on eBay.
Nice performance of the horn trio, too.
The CD is from the Italian label Ermitage, who have licensed the symphony recording from Decca and tacked on their own recording of the horn trio with Ashkenazy tinkling the ivories. Curious!

- the finale of the Appassionata sonata is literally laugh out loud amazing (the opening chords) and jawdropping (the rest).
And this is a very interesting and beautiful album - works by Purcell, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake and Susanna Wallumrod (the vocalist on the disc).
You probably don't want to listen to it all in one go or you may top yourself. All the tracks are kind of sad, the Purcell are positively suicidal.
Fantastic album and demo class sonics.

Hmmm -- the symphony is quite interesting, although a review in Fanfare mag claimed it is a masterpiece ...
I much prefer his chamber music, also on the Guild label.
Andreae was a famous conductor mid-20C - especially for his Bruckner recordings.
No, his symphony doesn't sound like Bruckner!
