I got a lot of pleasure from my Diamond IIs - they've also been out on stopgap duties on a couple of occasions too.
I'll have to dig 'em out from under the pile of stuff in the back bedroom cupboard and give 'em another run.
From what I remember they were voiced to be run with grilles on, and sounded quacky if you ran them sans grilles.

Maxim 2, not bad, had a large capacitor in series with the bass unit to limit low freq input.Hang on - I think we're talking about different Maxims here. I'm talking about the Maxim, Maxim 2 and especially the Maxim 3 from the 80s/90s (which were the main Wharfedale Diamond competitors), not the originals which, in my humble opinion, are good and impressive for their size, but not worth the prices being asked for them.
That said though, I've owned two pairs of the 1960s Maxims - one pair cost me £1 from the car boot sale, the other £3 from my local dump.
Consider the JPW Gold monitor, better tweeter than in Maxim 2 and usually go for peanuts.

Nearly bought a pair of Maxims when I was going through a downsizing period in the early 80s, however, after listening, bought a pair of RCL Small Loudspeakers. Still listen to them 30 years on, only thing that isn't original is the grilles,which disintegrated in the 90s.

as I've got a silver one of these I guess I could be accused of bigging this up, but... I've been amazed by the last couple of auctions I've seen for this deck - where basically it seems to have gone for the price of the arm, so to speak...
people don't seem to reckon it at all - not sure why
this one hasn't an arm and is a bit scruffy - but could be a bargain?
