Sounds like you've got a bad one there Barry. But I don't think they're all bad. Maybe most of them. I take your point about the ales, though if I was a real ale aficionado I doubt Wetherspoons would be on my itinerary. And as I would only visit for my breakfast, a cup of tea would be more my thing.
Preston's Wetherspoons isn't great, but I'm not saying it has anything to do with being next door to the Job Centre... We all used to meet up there many years ago at the start of a night out. And though they had a 'no music' policy (designed to encourage and enable conversation), with everyone talking louder than everyone else, you still couldn't hear yourself think 
When visiting Poole's Wetherspoons for breakfast a few years ago, the staff had neglected to clear a table a few feet from us long enough for the local gulls to enjoy a free brekkie of leftovers. Which resulted in most of the crockery lying broken on the floor, and even that didn't rouse the staff from their clock-watching and discussing who bagged off with whom the night before.
But then there's the Hartlepool one that as Martin has reported before does a decent job, does it promptly and doesn't charge the earth.
