Nor I - I have software on three storage formats: LP, CD and reel-to-reel tape. Used to have a lot of music on cassette, recorded to play in the car. I still have a couple of Nakamichi cassette tape decks.

No. I just have a pack of BASF blanks that I've never used. It's hard to find albums on DAT and they're expensive when they do show up.

I bought this deck years ago thought I would get round to seeing if it actually works.

Well it certainly looks nice in the setup and fun to have a play with! I think DAT was too expensive for the consumer market, although it was used in recording studios and then for data storage.

That's just reminded me of (Philips?) "DCC" - that didn't last long, either!

Better than CD? Mechanically DAT uses tape in the same way as video tape: the tape is pulled out and uses a helical scan head to read/write, and thus suffers the same vulnerability to stretching and oxide shedding as any other magnetic tape.

I have a CD recorder and a bunch of blank CD-RW discs, but I have never used it. Perhaps I should give a try and make up CDs for the car.
