Primal Scream - 'Give Out But Don't Give Up'



''Give Out But Don’t Give Up ... was met with absolute incredulity. For every powder-fuelled trendy who reckoned they could see what Primal Scream were getting at with this loose, louche trawl through stereotypical rock'n'roll and dodgy Confederacy chic, several more were absolutely heartbroken. I can remember the reactions to "Rocks" among my friends, from mild disappointment through outright mockery to an aghast sense of betrayal. Primal Scream, after all, were the band who had shown the way, who’d seen the error of their indie rock ways and taken plenty of us along with them. Nobody in 1994 much listened to Screamadelica any more, but we all of us owned it. "Bitches keep bitchin'/ Clap keeps an-itchin'" – how could they do this to us?''

I went to the warm up for the tour for this album, hardly anyone there just me and some poxy students who were expecting Screamadelica 2 and didn't get it.

Never really thought that deeply about this album, but has made me want to play it next and see if I can understand what they were talking about! I also loved "Vanishing Point" and "Echo Dek" so let's see how the evening goes, once I've finished this...

Yeah I have those two, and Melody am was always going to be a hard act to follow imo. Not bad tho.

Vanishing Point was a sort-of return to dance music, with Echo Dek being a dub version of that iirc. I lent my copy of Echo Dek to a mate and never got it back. Now you've reminded me about it I'll try to get it back next time I visit. I remember it being weird in a good way.

As for 'Give out but...', I like it enough to play it every now and then, but Screamadelica is much more my thing.

I managed "Give Out" and Vanishing Point, but I'm all screamed out now - will try Echo Dek tomorrow - I can't really recall it. Checking my server I also bought 2008's Beautiful Future, but that I don't remember at all! Will give that a go as well, as I need something a little more mellow to end the day...



I can't believe this is nearly 30 years old! Seems like only yesterday I bought it!

LOL! If you can pick up this one and/or any of their other albums for pennies, I think they would be up your street - laid-back chilled electronic jazz.
