Compared to modern 'cars' the Allegro is now quite good looking. If we forget about the Vanden Plas model with the absurd Rolls Royce grille.

Face it, the '70s was the decade fashion took a holiday: flared trousers; 'teardrop' collars; wide lapels; skinny tight fitting shirts, and platform heels! And brown was 'in' as a colour for both interior decoration and for clothes, as well as for cars.

All the clothing you mention there (as well as two-tone parallel trousers, Ben Sherman button down or 'penny round' shirts, Crombie coats, 'double denim' and 'Budgie' jackets), formed part of my wardrobe (I didn't actually have a wardrobe in my teens, it was a chest of drawers and a chair piled with larger items). The 70s wasn't the decade fashion took a holiday, that WAS the fashion. Maybe it was the decade that taste took a holiday, but really we didn't see it that way at the time. Current fashion (if there is such a thing these days) may well become an embarrassment in years to come.

Maybe I should have said that the '70s was the decade when sartorial TASTE took a holiday. I rebelled against much of it, but it was difficult.

Couldn't do much about suits, and the 'kipper' ties of the time, but I refused platform heels and wore sensible brogues instead. Managed to make my straight corduroy jeans more or less last the decade.

However, more to the point, the '70s was a great period for music, not pop but the sort of stuff shown on The Old Grey Whistle Test.

I never considered myself a 'hippie', (how could I, with my Harrington or Budgie jacket, but I'd be wearing them along with flared jeans or "Loons", denim waistcoats, Afghan coat, and shoulder-length hair Thinking about it, I'm amazed I ever got a girlfriend... Thing is, I just wore what I liked the look of, without any regard for which 'tribe' it was meant for.

It was all a bit more "tribal" in my Lancashire Village you were either a skin/ suede, or you were a hippie lol. My music choices dictated the latter as did hair down to my arse, petulia oil etc, etc. Regarding girlfriends yeah you are dead right those came along when my views and appearance mellowed and the "Look" became more Bowie Quiff and less Robert Plant.
