Needed to post a small package today, so popped into W.H.Smith, only to find it has changed its name to T.G.Jones!

Apparently the name W.H.Smith is being retained for the profitable airport, railway and hospital shops. Profitable because they have a largely captive customer base, so can overcharge for anything they sell. Bastards.

The trick is to buy what you need before you go to the airport or railway station. Or be rich.

I mean no-one goes to the airport or station by mistake, or unexpectedly ends up there.

I don't, but you do see people with their own flasks and water bottles and that. Or their own booze.

I can usually manage a train journey without refreshment and at the airport I always used to go in the fancy lounge where it was free food and drink.

You have to get someone to sign you in to the executive lounge or whatever it's called.

Free tea, coffee, beer, wine, spirits, snacks, complimentary newspapers and magazines. And when your flight is ready they come over and tell you. Always nice and quiet, too.

Complimentary newspapers I get on the plane, as I do with booze. But never at an airport.

When we went into Preston last weekend we noticed the WH Smith there (which occupies a corner plot) had T.G Jones signage down the side, but still WH Smith on the front. Probably saving up to get that one changed.

WH Smith (and other retailers at airports) take advantage of airport security, by charging two or three times the normal cost for bottled water and soft drinks as they know anything you brought from home has been taken off you at check-in. As you say, bastards.

But we still buy this overpriced crap because hey, we're on holiday!

Darn, I got drunk and knocked one of my speakers over. Also seemed to have spilt small amount of liquid on amp, seems ok though, I managed 4 months no drink, think I need to abstain once again!!

Nightmare, Mike, hopefully the amp is ok. I’ve done similar if not worse over the years after a tipple or three.
