Detested the film, so much so I have absolutely no intention in watching Vol II. So I wouldn't know if the soundtrack has some great tunes on it. Probably my loss.

I came across John Mayer during my recent excursions trying to play guitar, the song 'Gravity' from his album 'Continmuum' was on the Gibson guitar teaching app, and I found the composition and song structure very appealing. By coincidence I came across this album on CD a few weeks later in a charity shop, so it was purchased.

"Heavier Things', his 3rd album, it is predominantly Blues/Rock with one or two songs with a greater pop feel. His lyrics are well worth listening to, generally contemplative or story telling. What I like is he takes quite simple musical structures but gets the most from them with some very soulful playing. The aforementioned 'Gravity" is well worth a listen as well. I will also be buying Continuum.

I have not posted for some time as I have been avidly practicing guitar, currently I seem to have reached a plateau with what I can play accurately and consistently, and improvement seems to be stagnating. I struggle with keeping to rhythms and tempo, some are worse than others, this can be very limiting and frustrating. As a result I have found a guitar teacher locally, he is very good and is also a full time musician, he is confident that he can help and so far his guidance is helping slowly.

I hope that some of you enjoy John Mayer.

I sympathise with the guitar thing. I got a guitar off the neighbours when I was 16. First I couldn't play at all. Then after a short while I could play but I was rubbish. Then, after about two years of really intense practice, I was slightly less rubbish.

My brother, on the other hand, who was already an accomplished pianist and violinist, picked up the guitar anytime I left it alone for ten minutes and within 3 days he could play like Hendrix.

If you weren't born with that innate musical aptitude it's a slog just to get to half decent. I never got there.

I found that jamming with people helped with the rhythm and tempo aspect. Helped that I have a few friends who are professional musicians, but there's only so long they were prepared to shepherd a beginner. However first time I had to improvise a solo I managed to accomplish it and in the right key, which buoyed me up a bit They weren't so impressed ofc.

I'll check out John Mayer, I think I might have come across him before though.

Thanks Martin, 20 years ago I did a BTEC music course with guitar as main instrument and was starting to get better , but it seems to have just left me now. I suppose do use it hen loose it!

I would love to be able to play a musical instrument. Given the choice it would be the piano, as it is so versatile; allowing one to play a variety of musical genres.

When I was very young I used to be able to play on the linoleum, but now all I can do is play the fool!

The only music lessons I had was for violin, and I was pretty good at it, reaching "first violin" in the school orchestra. Once I left school, I bought a cheap electric guitar, and a classic Casio CZ-101 synth. I taught myself how to play, and was in a couple of local bands on keyboards, including one that the lead singer left to become moderately successful in the early 90's. I don't do regrets in life, but not pursuing music is close to being one.

My 12 year old son is a very good drummer, as well as playing sax and piano - I have not pushed him at all, just exposed him to options, but he seems to be gravitating towards music. Luckily his older sister wants to become a Doctor, so hopefully she will be able to dish out the occasional handout to her penniless younger brother!
