What's this, a Tracy Chapman disc l haven't got? !!!

Released 2005. It's ok, as are all the others I have (4 on CD, 2 vinyl). But imo her eponymous debut stands head and shoulders above the others.

Thanks Steve - but I'm embarrassed to say that I have just looked under 'Chapman' in my CD collection and there it is.

I once started a thread called "Can one have too much music?". It prompted quite a few replies to the effect that 'No, one can't have too much'. Well I have just demonstrated that you can have too many CDs, to the point that you don’t know what you have got.

Anyway I'll play it now to remind myself.

This review by John Black, published in Hi Fi News and Record Review at the time, is interesting:

"Depending entirely on your point of view, Tracy Chapman is either a deeply depressing do-gooder or a courageous champion of the underdogs. Whatever your take, there's no way to deny that she has a unique voice, a curious trembling tone which suggests fragility but somehow conveys reserve of quiet strength.
Her seventh album demands to be heard in its entirety (if at all), because the same intense mood is sustained throughout, with only a couple of tracks delivered at much more than a snail's pace. For those who can take this sort of emotional turmoil, the jazzy, almost Gershwin-like 'Don't Dwell' is one of the loveliest melodies Chapman has come up with, and the closing 'Be And Be Not Afraid' offers an empowering philosophy for those who feel downtrodden.

Tbh, I never try to analyse the finer points of a performance nor where the artist's head may be at - The vocals and arrangements either 'connect' with me or they don't. And I've never been much for lyrics either.

Also, I do think it's perfectly possible to have too much music - I always considered the best work to be the stuff that doesn't immediately impress, but may need repeated listens, but with all this music around me I just don't have the time! Back in the day when I only had 50 or so albums, I knew them all back to front and inside out, and enjoyed them all.

I don't know quite how it happened, but I have approximately 150 Chillout CDs by "Various Artists". Cafe Del mar up to volume 16 (plus the 20th, 25th & 30th Anniversary collections), Cafe Mambo Series, Saint Germain En Laye Cafe, The Art of Chill, etc., etc., etc... Among them are roughly 20 "Ministry of Sound" compilations, and somehow I managed to acquire this one, which is an Australian/New Zealand release, from 2004:

It is one of my favourite compilations. Disc 1 is more "chill" opening with an absolutely brilliant remix of Missy Higgins "Nightminds" by Dave Higgins - I have no idea if they are related, but his remix of one of my favourite Missy tracks is epic. There are too many good tracks on this release to name check them all, but suffice to say if you are a chill/smooth house fan, I would strongly recommend picking up a copy. Surprisingly, there is one available in the UK for £13.49 delivered. (No, it's not me plugging my own sale! )

That's a lot of "chill"! I have few soothing, 'ambient' discs in my collection. Not quite lift music, but something to stick on when I'm, say, cooking and unable to give the music my full attention.

At least you haven't got 150 "Now That's What I Call Crap (Oops, sorry - I mean Music)" discs.

Actually there are "just" 119 Now albums, with number 120 out next month. Though that doesn't include all the variants (Now Christmas, Now 70s, etc). Before you all gang up on me, it's Anita who collects them, and her friend buys and sends her each new release. In her defence, Anita never plays them, she just got caught up in some kind of collectormania. She's still missing about ten.

All CDs, apart from maybe the first dozen or so which she has on vinyl. And she says I have a problem!

I agree they're crap, but especially the last 20 years' worth which are so bad you'd have to leave the room.

I still have a few "dance" compilations, though nothing like that bad! I used to like the early "Renaissance" releases, still have a few. This one I used to play to death post-club.
