I was today years old when I discovered that Portsmouth is the only island city in the UK - I had never realised it is located on “Portsea Island” and not part of the mainland. I’ve even been there a few times and still never knew.

What is the requirement for a town to become a city? I always thought it was there being a cathedral, then I heard that having a university qualified it. I've just read that in 2002 Preston became England's 50th city, marking the Queen's 50th year (Golden Jubilee).

I think it used to be a requirement, but then the designation of the seat of a Bishop (cathedra) was probably confered by the king at that time, so presumably any reigning monarch, as head of the Church of England can 'upgrade' the status of a church to that of cathedral if they so wish.
There are many towns in the UK that are home to cathedrals but are not cities.
