The Four Feathers, 1939. directed by Zoltan Korda, starring John Clements, Ralph Richardson, June Duprez, and C. Aubrey Smith.
John Laurie plays the Khalifa (was he ever young?) but alas even as he speaks a foreign language, he still sounds like Laurie.
This is the Reg A Criterion Bluray. Its colour and pretty decent pic for a film so old.
The action scenes, photographed by Osmond Borradaile, were not only filmed where the historical battles had taken place, but also included among the many extras, people who had witnessed or participated in the fighting more than forty years earlier. These battle scenes further benefitted from Director Zoltan Korda's expertise at large-scale action and his early experience as a cavalry officer. The sailing ships pulled by hordes of Sudanese along the Nile were constructed specially for the production in exact period detail at great cost.

This is the remastered Criterion version and region A
After filming had ended, Cary Grant kept the famous UNICA key. A few years later he gave the key to his great friend and co-star Ingrid Bergman, saying that the key had given him luck and hoped it would do the same for her. Many years later, at a tribute to director Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Bergman went off-script and presented the key to him, to his surprise and delight.

I will stay with my region A collection and this...Night Train to Munich, 1940. Its directed by Carol Reed and starring Margaret Lockwood and Rex Harrison. Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, based on the 1939 short story Report on a Fugitive by Gordon Wellesley.
The second of six film appearances by Charters and Caldicott (played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne). They first appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes (1938)," also written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder. They later appeared in "Crook's Tour (1940)," "Millions Like Us (1943)," and "It's Not Cricket (1949)," which were also written by Gilliat and Lauder, and in "Dead of Night (1945)."
Considering the early release date of this movie--August 1940 in the UK and December 1940 in the US--there are many remarkable depictions of the onerous nature of the Nazi system, something not fully appreciated even by UK audiences at the time. The UK had bent over backward to accommodate Adolf Hitler in the late 1930s, and the war had only "gotten serious" a few months earlier with the debacle at Dunkirk in France and the following aerial Battle of Britain, which was well underway when this movie was released. The US would not enter the war for a full year after the December release date.
As of 2011, this movie has not been released in Germany at all.
