I hardly write with a pen any more, but my favourite is my Waterman L'Etalon in black lacquer and gold trim. I've also got a L'Etalon Mechanical pencil in brown/silver - I hate having to sharpen a pencil! With a mechanical one, there's always plenty of lead in it!

The Waterman's look really nice but the trouble when buying a lot of fountain pens is that they don't do an italic nib, they aren't that common, and I can't write properly if it's not a straight italic nib

Sometimes I write italic (what we used to call at school 'real writing') and sometimes I print, depending on mood.

My mother always wrote in italics, and I learned in order to forge absence letters for school. My forgeries were quite convincing, but the school did eventually twig as I was fundamentally honest - I should have written that I was ill or had a dentist appointment, instead of saying I was at my friend's house enjoying Pink Floyd and a bit of Red Leb

Think that is what my Waterman is, save the lacquer is more of a gunmetal colour. It was given to me by my now late parents; one of the last Christmas presents from them.

I used it at work and at home but sadly I 'lost' it about six years later. Looked everywhere, couldn't find it and thought about buying a replacement. The exact same model was no longer made and I was surprised as to the cost quality fountain pens (at least £100).

Then, approximately ten years later, whilst redecorating the main bedroom, mirabile dictu I found the pen. It had rolled under one of the bedside cabinets, which being part of the headboard, was a bit of a permanent fixture. You can well imagine my joy at being reunited with something having much sentimental value, as well as relief from the sense of guilt I felt loosing it in the first place.

Safe to say it now resides in my desk drawer and is well looked after.

I cannot justify spending a lot on an italic fountain pen as, of course, it's not used much these days..

I'd love to try a Pilot 78G but I can only get them in a green colour and I can't stand green....
