I cannot even get my homepage up.doh!
its been having problems all morning, either signs you out or cant load a page. If sunday is their regular maintenance day they shouldnt allow auctions to be finishing on that day.
Well I have a philosophical view on life these days. In the four years I've bought off eBay it's the first time I've had anything damaged. And it was due to it being wrapped in bubblewrap and a softgrade box opened and wrapped around it rather than a strong, rigid box. The fact that it weighs so much didn't help.Quote:

Geoff, is the underside of the platter damped? Mine has some residue suggesting it was. And do you use the original mat? I can photocopy the manual or send it to you if you would like to scan it.

Thanks Geoff. There's a bloke (iconic-audio) selling a quality Technics replacement for £37 which seems pretty good considering the typical price for a dust cover. I'll have another go and see how many more marks I can polish out and try to hide the split and crack at the sides and then decide on a replacement. Wonder how James got on with his cover.Quote:

I'd not pay that kind of money. Personally, the Mk.II is my favourite (not sure why though). I had a mint Mk.II 1210 about five years ago for £200 off the Bay.

If you get the chance grab one of LIDL's Weller type soldering guns. They do these every few months as 'Specials' and they work great. The large amount of almost instant power is brilliant for doing speaker plugs & cables which soak up the heat like mad! They're cheap and good quality. Keep an eye on their website for the 'Specials'.Quote:

I haven't tried the cassette deck yet, but the cd player works, though I haven't subjected it to critical listening yet. The main attraction was the M4 amplifier - I already have a c4 preamp and was very impressed with performance.
The first thing I hooked up was the t7 tuner, I slid it into the workshop system instead of a Denon Tu 260l, which I'd always thought was rather good. Well, straight away it was obvious the Yam was in a different league - smoother but more detailed and realistic, a very worthwhile step up. AND you wouldn't believe the five station presets - this is SOOOOO good - you set them with a memory button, just like a modern tuner, BUT when you switch between them the whole tuning operation is motorised and the tuning knob and scale pointer move with ghostly precision to the new station, then un-mute. The M-4 power amp I hooked up to some little music centre speakers before risking either of my concentric darlings. None of the square buttons lit up:(. Made an ok sound with the cd player going through it, so took it down to the house to play through my Tannoys.

As it happens the pre in the house system at the moment is a Yamaha C-4, so the M-4 replaced the Luxkit Avance Z501 with the correct pre. Much lead swapping and critical listening later, reached the following verdicts:
M-4 is good, but not the sonic equal of the Luxkit. Sounds good in isolation, then you connect up the Luxkit and have an "oh yeah" moment. Followed by an extended meditation on self delusion.
So....the M-4...Possibly a service? Certainly the bulbs in the square buttons need fettling. A little disappointing as I was expecting great things, but the Luxkit is pretty stellar. And the Yamaha is beautifully built, whereas the Luxkit internals make my electronics guru friend hold his head in his hands.
The new C-4 preamp is flakey - balance control is unbelievably noisy, channel balance isn't equal, doesn't sound as clean as my other one. Has bulb issues too. Might do a little deoxit squirting later.
Anyone with experience of this gear, or informed opinions of it, contributions will be appreciated!
Excellent and quite rare Moth MM/MC phono stage. Going cheap for such a good item, ends very shortly, well worth grabbing!
I used to have one and found it extremely good. transparent, clean and vibrant, fine on MC too.

I Got one of those dust covers from Iconic Audio for my Girl friends modded Techie.
Very well made, crystal clear, and boxed well. Has four small soft pads applied to the edge so it doesn't slide around or scratch the deck.

There are quite a few differences between the 930 & 940. None of the ones I've seen have the headphone outputs, provision to power a phono stage or cuing light plus a number of other small differences. The 940 does of course share the 930 top platter/bearing and motor.
