Two sizes were made 7" and 8.25". I have about a dozen of the former and a couple of the latter. Your 8.25" spool does look in good condition.Quote:

Do the Series 7 have treaded hub spigots for use with a treaded spool retainer? I know the Brenell and Nagra machines do, so, as you say, do not need the 'hub locks'.Quote:

The 8.25" diameter was the original spool size chosen by Ferrograph as it was the same diameter as spools of 8mm cine-film, fitting most home projectors at the time.
Apropos tape length, a 7" spool can hold 1800 foot; enough for 45mins at 7.5ips. I can understand why most serious machines have the capability to take 10.5" diameter spools. I don't use tape that much, anyway 7" is the largest spool size I can fit on the Nagra. Nick (Beechwoods) and I have exchanged recordings we have made at 7.5ips on Nagra machines and I can't find fault with this speed on playback. Mind you, I have not done a comparison as such between recording at 7.5ips and at 15ips.

Yes the 'Series 7' are threaded...You need the hub lock for the old wearite ferrographs cos if you don't the reels are proned to vibrate..
10.5" are no good to me, 8.25" are perfect..
You can get 2,400ft on a 8.25" reel, The 'Series 7': '702'/'722' variants actually have 15ips believe it or not, you should get around half an hour out of a 8.25" reel @ 15ips.Just over an hour with 8.25" @ 7.5ips..
Only drawback with the 'Series 7' & the series 6' i think! is the tape doesnt disengage from the head on wind so you must remember to turn your amp volume off when doing so or fried tweeters could be on the menu.
Anyone wanting a 'Series 7' be prepared to spend some money on having the Pinch roll & three idler wheels re-tyred, the original Neoprene tyres are nearly always bolloxed.New ones are much quieter anyway.They either go to mush or rock hard, anyone who says 'Yeh there ok' are probably rock hard & not ok

Just returned from a quick demo of these Gales. He's done a lovely job on them. Unfortunately I mislaid my CD of test tracks and had to listen to some unfamiliar music but they sounded very impressive in his workshop - huge sound. I'm in two minds about these, you just can't tell anything in a situation like that - they were connected up to a basic Denon amp. He said I could come back with all my Naim gear for another demo, but I'm not sure I can be arsed with all that. Would my 250 even be big enough to control all that bass? I thought it a bit cheeky to ask for a home demo :eyebrows:Quote:

A Naim 250 will drive 401's with little trouble unless you really want to push it, in which case the rigidly held power supplies will cause the amp to complain rather unpleasantly..
DMS 'briks are fairly efficient and the 250 gives around 125WPC into 4 Ohms (old 'Briks dip to below 3 at some frequencies IIRC). The 401's need POWER to make them come to life and I'd suggest a "looser" sounding amp for them - the Meridian 557 or Quad 606 II/707/909 should be ideal for example, together with other beefy powerhouses.
I just got a Thomas Dolby LP delivered today. Excellent condition (near mint to my eyes). 1p + postage. That's £3.01 in total. The postage was £2.61 and the packing materials must have cost more than 39p, so the seller made a loss when you figure in his ebay and paypal charges.

Andre, that one will give you a severe headache within an hour of use... The Meridian MCD and especially MCD Pro were rather better, although very lacking by modern standards - a cheapo Cambridge or NAD would wipe the pants off one in sound..
My Marantz CD63 is the equivalent of the Philips (well, it looks identical except that it's in black). I disagree that it will "give you a severe headache within an hour of use". No, it's not the ultimate audiophile player, but it never pretended to be, so shouldn't be auditioned as such. And yes, it has a different sound presentation compared to more modern players, but it can be quite a musical sounding player in its own right. I'm very fond of mine, especially for the likes of Julio Iglesias and other 'simple' (MOR) music. I find complicated multi-layered music can overpower it and sound messy and unfocused. (am I making sense to anyone?)
The Meridian versions are a lot rarer and go for a lot more money. I don't think Andre wants to buy it for it's sound quality, more for it's collectability. Personally I'd rather have it over a cheapo Nad or Cambridge any day. I'll never get rid of mine.

I just found the treble to be a bit "ringy" at the time and couldn't listen for long. The Sony CDP101 was much better, although both of these early machines had a "paper cutout" kind of soundstaging IMO. The MCD Pro I had, which was the first CD player I owned and is still running I understand, 25 years on, had a more relaxed presentation and more air and space when there..Quote:

Twenty one years ago, 509's were less than £2500 retail and I perhaps foolishly bought a pair of Tube Technology Genesis mono's instead, which sold for about the same.
Several years ago, stuff on ebay was dirt cheap. It's only in recent years that audio has taken off in price (unlike the clocks I bought which now sell for half what I paid for them).
When I first started selling 509's they were around £1100 the pair and made the USA competitors look like very poor value indeed, now they are similarly priced. This is partly due to the £2K price rise just before Christmas...:stalks:
Having said that they are still wonderful amps, solid and reliable.
As for 'vintage' products - I used to moan that all the wonderful old kit I have was worth virtually nothing but now it's all gone stratospheric and I'm still not happy because I find it too expensive to buy goodies on E-Bay...:scratch:
Thats a good machine. I borrowed one of these for a few weeks i the 80's to try before buy, if it wernt for a Tandberg coming up cheap at the time i would have bought it back then..The long throw VU's were to die for. The thing that gets me with the big Naks later on the digital meters are pants.
