I've always played a bit Marco, it was the only music in the house when I was a kid so it's kind of in my DNA. Except Mozart - my parents over-saturated me with Mozart & I loathe him!
Jochum / Bavarian / Bruckner 9 - one of the very best, imo.

Yep, I used to dislike his music - but over the years I have been quite won over.
The requiem, string quintets, piano sonatas .... ah, so much unbelievably wonderful music.

Good, very good, but not great. Nice to have it in my G&S DVD collection, though.
The version live from Central Park with the same cast except for Lansbury, in very poor sonics and visuals, was a lot better, imo.

Yes indeed, she was a bit of a babe back then. Still the finest and most satisfying pianist, along with Radu Lupu, that I know in recordings. She makes anything sound good.Quote:

Two 40 minute-ish symphonies.
The 3rd (placed 1st on the CD) is quite light-hearted and easy going, the 2nd is more serious and powerful.
Nicely recorded, both are well worthwhile. :)

I have no idea what to say :scratch: Like many similar western influenced Chinese / Japanese efforts I tend to enjoy a single playing then it goes on the gathering dust pile (I must try harder...)

Not that I imagine anyone cares, but vivaldis l'estro armonico and then, having a seriuosly baroque spell, to my total joy and anazement my dads copy of david oistrach playing the bach double violin concerto has succunbed to the Marco moth rcm treatment and is sublime beyond belief.
This awesome bloody amplifier, like a valve giant, is making the sweetest music at levels nearly too quiet to here. Lost for words
hmmm - don't know the Bach Double - will check it out ... Awesome violinist - I can thoroughly recommend Oistrakh's recording of the Sibelius on Melodiya.
I love the double. I have anne sophie mutters version too, but not in this class. With his brother igor.

Gould thoroughly disliked Beethoven's 5th piano concerto but had to play it to satisfy contractual obligations.
Whoa - it's actually a great and very unconventional performance! If you know the work, the opening bars of solo piano will have you goggling in amazement!

An interesting CD in several ways ....
1) I'd not come across this Naxos CD before - in fact, this is a release by "Naxos Canada" of Canadian musicians with a Chinese soloist. It's not listed on Amazon UK, I'd not realised Naxos released CDs by country.
2) the recording features a different "star" violin for each of the 6 concertos - 3strads, 1 Amati and 2 by Guarneri
3) it's an excellent performance and recording!

Hmm. There's no doubt about it, in my mind; Kovacevich has lost it a bit since his youth. Very fine playing, technically, but somehow the musical 'spark' eludes him in these 1990's recordings.

Sadly (tragically) it turned out to be only the 1st disc of a 2 disc boxset -- but it is absolutely phenomenal as a performance and as a recording - the sound is just massively superior to any of the reissues I have come across.

Oh yes, that is in many ways my definitive version of the second. Both the LP and CD are good and convey the hugeness of the playing extremely well. I saw Tennstedt conducting it with the LPO at the Festival Hall and it remains (together with Rattle some years later) a high point of my concert going experiences.Quote:

I played this again in an attempt to get more from it, and I did manage to. Despite it not reaching the heights of Jarvi's Allegro, it is exciting to listen to and does convey some emotion (more than a couple of my recordings manage) without falling into performance-by-numbers. I just wish he didn't keep pulling back the brass just when they need to blare out over the orchestra. Of course, this could be a limitation of the RLPO's brass section. Not bad, but the Jarvi remains the best.
