I rarely play this version of TB, but in all honesty, it works really well. Indeed, I think 'Part 2' might just be better than the original in its orchestral guise.

I do find Bliss rather difficult. It's the way he chops and changes mood so often -- I just can't seem to get my head around that.
And the music so often sounds ... what's the word? ... banal, maybe.

That's true - at first listen I couldn't detect any structure to it - it just kind of rambled along chaotically (and not very interestingly after a good start) to my ear.
Late romantic English music can do that, for me. Elgar and Delius being as guilty as anyone else, on occasion.
The one notable exception being RVW, for me.
But I will give it another go and will happily eat my words if I change my mind. :)
To me, Mahler just rambles along! It'd be boring if we all liked the same things.
Didn't Constant Lambert liken RVW's Pastoral Symphony to "a cow looking over a gate"? For me it's one of his best pieces of music. . . .

At just under 90 minutes, is this the slowest Bruckner 7 ever? -- at least as it's on DVD I didn't have to change discs part way through. :)

Quite possibly the best SACD sound quality I have heard - hey, I actually enjoyed this one!
They often sound blurred and mushy, bloated and ill-defined, to me. Maybe I need to hear them in surround sound? :scratch:

I kind of dislike playing "audiophile" recordings on principle ;) -- but this disc is very fine musically as well as sonically. And it happily doesn't share the hyped up treble of all too many Living Presence recordings.
Interesting, too - baroque harpsichord playing from the early 1960s, before all the HIP malarkey got going and became the norm. A fairly steady pulse to it, but full of life and energy. I'll be seeking more of Puyana's work out. :)

Despite the rave reviews as well as a quick sample download, the 22nd concerto here was a big disappointment. My attention rapidly drifted off, all very generic really.

Ah, that's more like it. Some emotional involvement from the pianist! The orchestral accompaniment is a little heavy and sonic textures a bit thick - but still very enjoyable overall.

I like this - not quite the involvement as from Barenboim, but still good and the orchestra is lighter, more appropriate for the music than the Berlin Phil. The recording is clearer, too.
