Is anybody going to be daft enough to buy this Rogers Cadet pre-amp for £400?
They're not very good, can't be easily used without the matching power amp that is its power source, the phono adaptor does not appear to be present and somebody has drilled a row of holes along the top of the case. Besides, it's worth maybe £50 max anyway!

I have a Master, now that is a bit different, that may be worth that sort of money.

I was not keen on their early transistor amps Ravensbourne and Ravensbrook, bit rough at the top end.
had a Ravensbrook myself.... it was imo crap. heard a cadet once and didnt think much of it but dont think the speakers were especially sensitive, and much preferred my wad
Still got a Ravensbrook and an HG88. Used to have a Ravenbourne which I actually quite rated... Got a few Rogers tuners as well...
I was not impressed with the valve gear. OK -ish if at back ground listening levels but goes pear shape as the volume goes up!
The Master power amp looks like it could be of a different breed though. Certainly very rare indeed!
The Ravensbourne FET2 tuner is pretty good, still have one. The similar looking earlier Ravensbourne tuner, is just too hissy.Quote:

Yes. It does seem to be a Junior. I should know the difference having had the Cadet in various forms. Integrated and separate.
The Ravensbrook should not be underestimated. It is a better sounding amp than the Ravensbourne. I've had a number of each and compared them. Years ago I had a Ravensbrook driving AR4Xa speakers and that little combo sounded very nice indeed.
Both can sound pretty good but I found a slight preference for the 'bourne when I compared them. It was a minter hardly used one though. Interesting power amp design in them...Quote:

Yes, I thought the Ravensbrook a tad better than the Ravensbourne.
Ravensbourne FET2 is very good sounding, quite sensitive too. It has green markings on the perspex dial, as against white makings on the dial for the older Ravensbourne tuner.Quote:

Strange thing is, later when the FM4 came out, I bought one of those. I felt the only improvement on the Ravensbourne FET2 was the push button tuning. And, now, the FM4 has a fault, not been able fix it yet. Of course the Ravensbourne FET2 still works fine.

These were all my later Father's, I needed them recently after filling my car with fuel recently, the wrong fuel. I filled the tank with diesel, about 8 gallons, it's a petrol car.
Amazingly, the car got me home and survived, 26 year old Volvo.

I'm surprised it got you home Alex . This certainly wouldn't have worked in a new car . Years ago I borrowed ny brothers car and did the same thing . When I was a mechanic on the lorries ( many years ago:) ) we added a gallon of petrol to the diesel tank to stop the fuel from ' freezing '.
I discovered later that the fuel didn't actually freeze , the wax which in previous years had been removed to make candles , separated from the diesel when it reached a certain temperature and blocked the fuel lines.
The stand pipe in the fuel tank lifts up fuel from the lowest point of the tank first . Chances are you were using the pure petrol at the bottom of the tank first Alex . As you travelled there would then be a mixture of petrol and Diesel and lastly pure diesel as it moved nearer the bottom . Chances are there was some petrol being burnt for a while .Quote:
