Well, a Cadet and some reasonably sensitive speakers can sound good. The Junior Stereo power amp is a very sweet sounding amp.Originally Posted by struth

had a Ravensbrook myself.... it was imo crap. heard a cadet once and didnt think much of it but dont think the speakers were especially sensitive, and much preferred my wad

Still got a Ravensbrook and an HG88. Used to have a Ravenbourne which I actually quite rated... Got a few Rogers tuners as well...
I was not impressed with the valve gear. OK -ish if at back ground listening levels but goes pear shape as the volume goes up!
The Master power amp looks like it could be of a different breed though. Certainly very rare indeed!

The Ravensbourne FET2 tuner is pretty good, still have one. The similar looking earlier Ravensbourne tuner, is just too hissy.

Standard one here... 2 or 3 valve ones as well. They sound better than Troughlines or Quad valve tuners IMHO but pretty lousy sensitivity and "pre-set" switched tuning only... fine tune is by a control on top of the chassis protruding from an RF shielding can, variable inductance. If you have a strong signal and are happy to be tuned to the same station all the time they sound good though. Much more impressive than the amps. I once used one for quite a while years ago with a stereo decoder I made.

had a cadet 2 and a cadet 3 , the 2 is better used with a decent pre , the best Rogers I had where a pair of Juniors... perhaps is because they run el 84's and not Ecl 86's , as has been said the cadets are sweet sounding but run out of steam when driven at higher volumes

Yes. It does seem to be a Junior. I should know the difference having had the Cadet in various forms. Integrated and separate.
The Ravensbrook should not be underestimated. It is a better sounding amp than the Ravensbourne. I've had a number of each and compared them. Years ago I had a Ravensbrook driving AR4Xa speakers and that little combo sounded very nice indeed.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Both can sound pretty good but I found a slight preference for the 'bourne when I compared them. It was a minter hardly used one though. Interesting power amp design in them...

I bought my Ravensbourne amp new, didn't like it compared with Quad II's. I believe there may have been some changes in production over the years.
Yes, I thought the Ravensbrook a tad better than the Ravensbourne.

Ravensbourne FET2 is very good sounding, quite sensitive too. It has green markings on the perspex dial, as against white makings on the dial for the older Ravensbourne tuner.
I liked the FET2 so much, I made a new front panel and case to match the Quad 44 that I bought when they first came out, there was no Quad FM4 at that time:
