I think he'd like to stay as President until he falls off his perch but it can't happen so it won't happen. We had all this last time and of course nothing came of it.

Could Trump and his mate Vance work out a 'back door' method? Say Vance was elected as the next president, with Trump as his VP? Then if Vance resigns his position Trump would then step in? Hopefully there is something in the Constitution that would make such a scenario impossible.

Technically that's not excluded by the constitution due to the wording of the 22nd amendment which says no-one can be elected President more than twice - but it would be challenged in the court if it were to happen.

Trump's clearly getting too old for it anyway, I don't think he could physically do another term. He might not even go the distance on this one.

Most likely course will be to attempt to put in some sort of 'mini me' as a successor. Thing is Trump has a 'cult of the personality' thing going which isn't easy to replicate. Ofc it will still need some credible Democrat candidate to prevent that which I can't see where that will come from right now.

Yeah, I don't see the Democrats coming with an alternative anytime soon, unless AI can come up with something. Likely that the nearest to Democrat the voters will see will be whoever becomes the next Republican candidate, who, like the rest of Trump's administration will finally have the courage to speak out against the Tyranny of Trump.

What the Democrats need is someone with essentially conservative values who will reject some of the more extreme 'Progressive' ideas such as the gender stuff and the 'Let's allow everyone and anyone to come and live here' but who is still on board with the saner aspects of the progressive programme. Another LBJ or Obama, essentially. They sort of had that with Biden until it turned out he was away with the fairies.

Unlike Trump, who is very much here with the elves.

We had all this last time and of course nothing came of it.I think he's already gone well beyond his meddling in the Constitution that he did in his first term. He has no regard for abiding by any laws or even the rulings of the Supreme Court, so unless the midterm elections see a huge swing to the Democrats, who knows what will happen!

He's a different kind of crazy :)

Trump is a vindictive, selfish, mendacious, narcissistic plutocrat, who only cares about himself and his perceived image. However he does have enormous charisma, which impresses his unthinking followers.

That's what he looks like when the conversation isn't about him and his greatness.

I read the article below and thought of the folk reading and contributing to this thread. I’ve already expressed my views and concerns about Trump, so I’ll simply add that I found it both eloquent and insightful.

You think this is a new thing that only started with Trump?

Questions were asked about Obama's penchant for assassination by drone strikes (over 500 of them) but that never got mentioned here. There was no thread about Obama being a threat to the constitution etc. He also still holds the record for number of deportations.

Not saying this to defend Trump or his administration, just a remark on the vein of naivety that runs through this thread.

Probably because he wasn't? On the other hand, and despite being the recipient of FIFA's inaugural peace prize, Trump is.

It will be interesting to see who wins the FIFA peace prize in the future.

Probably because he wasn't? .

Depends on how you view it. Assassinating people with drone strikes, on no mandate other than his personal say-so. Beyond the powers given to the President by the Constitution, or not?

So far I cannot think of one thing Trump has done that does not have precedent with a previous President. People really need to brush up on their U.S history.

I don't know about that, has any previous president ended 8 wars in his first year? Trump has, apparently. No luck so far with Russia/Ukraine, and I know he originally said he could end that one in a day, but to be fair he didn't say which day.

Others don’t seem to struggle listing them:

Approved by Congress, as per the Constitution.

Approved by Congress, as per the Constitution.

Not really:

https://factually.co/fact-checks/politics/obama-drone-strikes-congress-approval-civilian-casualties-0b7ac8

The Obama White House treated the 2001 AUMF and other prior authorizations as the legal basis for many drone operations and generally did not obtain fresh, case‑by‑case congressional authorization before strikes abroad; legal analysts and congressional hearings show persistent tension between executive prerogative and calls from lawmakers for new oversight or clearer statutory authority.

Some experts warned that relying on a stale AUMF gives the executive broad cover to sustain "perpetual" or geographically expansive operations without fresh congressional debate
