View Full Version : My 2019 Update Thread - My final system I think.
I am glad the Red does UPNP as this would be my route for using it with Audirvana and Qobuz unless Qobuz Connect is made available to the Holo Audio RED. As its a ROON endpoint you are well sorted Gary so at least that part of the conundrum is fine , now its a matter of working out best implementation into the MAY I guess. I know the MAY has fabulous galvanic isolation on the USB input but not sure about I2S? Lots of folk using HQP using USB so they can max out the upsampling opportunities! BUT as I have found NOS is sublime and OS for me is a step backwards.
I would certainly like to hear what the MAY does compared to the CYAN 2 with all that fantastic dual mono power supply etc. The Cyan 2 sounds amazing so I expect the MAY is mind boggling!:)
Happy to bring it down at some point James, let you hear it in your System. :)
Cant wait to hear what the May can do once its ran in properly, will take quite a while to bed in by all accounts.
This things been over engineered as far as possible, so lots to come I think.
Meanwhile,
I'll just enjoy the day to day stuff as it happens.
Yeah,
Have Terrabytes of albums in Flac, and a lot in DSD so Roon is a good solution for me.
Cant beat browsing your music on the big Ipad.
As I wasn't getting the Fizz playing music from Roon via the Oppo, I let my Qobuz subscription lapse.
Time to get it back up and running now I have the Holo Audio Kit.
So good to have my own music sounding great in Roon again, been enjoying YouTube and Apple Music, but Roon sounds a lot better. Especially with the new gear.
https://i.imgur.com/JyumeVb.jpeg
Must admit to being curious about HQPlayer upsampling, especially knowing the Holo gear can take full advantage of it.
But that's WAY down the line, just gonna enjoy what I have as the reported sound quality starts to come out.
I can now play around with the upsampling options in Roon, the Holo Dac is still in NOS mode, so still get the advantage of that.
Its just that as with HQ Player, there’s upsampling being taken care of outside the Dac, in this case my seperate PC running Roon software.
Can adjust it on the fly in Roon from the IPad, so pretty handy.
Just something else to try going forward.
Just a couple of days in it’s already by far the best digital I've had, this Dac just hits different.
Yes a trip down will need to happen sometime. Great to hear you have advanced your digital system by quite a margin I think what with the May Dac and the RED streamer.
Over on head fi I was yabbering to a guy who upgraded from the RED but he had to spend a lot of cash £5000 on an Innuos Pulsar and even then I think it was only marginal differences and a big lesson in diminishing returns!
Seems like there's a lot of options, which is good. I think I am too old to learn all that, or too lazy.

 Crikey!
Good to know…
In other news…
I found a fancy fuse of the same rating I could use in the Red, an SR Purple.
These worked well to give a nice improvement with other gear in my system, so fitted it to the streamer.
Won’t do any harm, might as well use it!

Sometimes a CD is alot less faff, thats for sure.
Not lazy, just "set in your ways"

A bit of both I think!
Change in cabling
I use an AppleTV hooked up over HDMI input to the Oppo 203, for Apple Music, YouTube, streaming TV 'n such.
Not being able to use the Oppo's i2s audio output into the new Dac, I tested its coaxial digital output?
That said:
i2s will probably work if I switched the Dacs internal PLL off.
I'll test that after the Dac has run in properly, see what happens.
Anyhoo
I've never used the Oppos Spdif output?
And as I removed the Oppo's internal Dac circuitboard when modding my 203, I didn't even know if the socket was still connected to anything!
Plugged in a scrapper RCA cable to test it, and it works fine.
https://i.imgur.com/77ub2gf.jpeg
Anyone else remember these Tandy Gold interconnects?
Sat in my spares box for many years... they were a big thing back in the Day! :)
Been listening to Apple Music, YouTube n stuff through it last couple of days, sounds pretty good.
New Dac is making everything sound better so not unhappy with that.
If I'm using Spdif digital to the Dac from the Oppo though:
I'm not going to keep using an old analogue interconnect as a digital cable into the new Dac...
So picked up a 'proper' digital Coax cable to use.
Final piece of the puzzle I think.

https://i.imgur.com/8VG9Haw.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/xZjuZe3.jpeg
Read about this one, its is supposed to be quite good.
The 'magic' 1.5m length too.
Got it 2nd hand from a Dealer, like new condition so that's cool.
Picked it up for just over half price compared to new, bit of a bargain.
So plumbed it in and I'm happy with the improvement over the old RCA cable.
Sounds good, really like what it's doing.
That looks a great cable Gary, just bought another cable myself with KLE plugs and OCC copper.
Which one?
An interconnect or digital cable?
KLE plugs are the best in the Biz...
Which one?

Just an interconnect.
My digital cables are Audioquest Cinnamon USB and Coax. Both made a big difference however I believe the Carbon Audioquest cable is better. These digital cables not only made a difference audibly they also made a technical difference which in my case was even more important. Coax is proper 75ohm coax.
Cables certainly make a difference and even more so I find in digital audio.
Yup.
100% agree.

OK, 'my final system I think'
Well we can all critique the thread title, however (I think) I have come to the end of my upgrade journey.
Last purchase - cables, and yes they do make a differene.
I have been spending money like it grew on trees, hey what's it for apart from to enhance ones time left.
Bought a modern newer car, fabulous, lots of auto features apart from the gearbox, makes driving more relaxing.
Following the relaxing ethos, I bought some Arke Audio Solo stand mount speakers earlier this year, everyone needs to hear these.
The internal cabling is Triple C so my latest (last?) purchase was some Triple C speaker leads. Replaced some Talk 4.1 cables that I had been given some while back.
Result - more relaxed presentation, detail and transparency increased (what the Arke Audio speakers are masters of).
End of journey? I have no money left so yes!
We all get there in the end Alan!
Those speakers sound tasty...
Nope.
Im happy with what I have :)
Unless we are very fortunate, I don't think we ever reach "the end of the line" as regards achieving a personal audio nirvana.
What happens is that the majority of the equipment in the replay chain have already been chosen, within one's budget, so apart from upgrading an old item with a significantly newer and better item that also offers good value for money, the "job's done".
After 50 year's involvement in hobby and having spent something like £80K, I'm at the end of the upgrade path. The only thing that might interest me would be a stand alone DAC; my limited investigations have shown that switching between internal and external DACs reveal small but non-decisive changes, and my current DAC (a TEAC design) does not work well with any of my CDPs (Mark Levinson, Studer-Revox, Simaudio Moon, and Sony).
Dread to think how much I have spent over last 45 years on hifi!

Me too. System I'm listening to right now owes me nine grand which I don't think is too unreasonable for a serious enthusiast given what you can spend on this stuff, but there's another system on the telly and the house is full of unused equipment (not to mention the cable graveyard).
Best not to think about it.
BTW I always assumed the thread title was ironic, even back in 2019 :D

I've found a really effective way to stop upgrading is to have 3 or 4 power amps to swap between and masses of valves to roll into various bits of equipment.
When you rotate the amps every month or few months and swap a few valves around it gives you that upgrade, or rather change from sameness which avoids monotony.
It really does work. Apart from slight snags like getting there in the first place and the inability to stop buying valves.
Hey, ho.
Next piece of gear isn't hi-fi. Probably a 100 inch Hisense TV when the new model is available in the UK.
I am not claiming I am immune. Just saying change, rather than buying for change helps a lot. Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say.

I upgrade to better gear, never change just for the sake of it.
And always have been happy at any specific point.
Theres always better out there, you gotta live in your own comfort zone.
Just when something significantly better comes along, I could sensibly afford it at the time, and would improve my enjoyment in the hobby.
You gotta enjoy yourself, otherwise whats the point? :)
I like getting the most out of my kit, so mod it where possible?
Most stuff is built to a price point and can be improved for just a little outlay.
Fun part of the whole hifi thing for me that, and we all have our own aspects that we enjoy.
Its all going to my Son when I pop my clogs, he can sell it, enjoy it, give it to the Cat Protection League, whatever he wants.
Cant take it with you, so its all an inheritance for him as well.
Cant plan these things though, so best not to overthink it.
Always remember this guy, chased the dream system all his life... didnt quite work out for the best.
Need to keep things in perspective!

One of the Video comments hits hard...
All about perspective.
"The audio system fetched just $156,800 at auction. Fritz died of ALS a couple of years ago, suffering an affliction that slowly removed his ability to use, then appreciate, the project that took so much money and work. A nicely done Washington Post story from today (Jan. 13, 2024) also chronicles how his obsession pushed his marriage into divorce and caused a rift that prompted him to disinherited one of his sons. I was actually surprised to see that the equipment sold for that much. Reminds me of what a stamp-collecting friend told me many years ago: enjoy the hobby, and know that the collection will someday be worth 10 cents on the dollar, if that."
Might worth trying one of these with the Red streamer. I used one into another streamer sometime back and it made a noticeable difference.

Interesting product, and timely too.
Ive recently changed Broadband companies and had copper Ethernet removed and Fibre to the Home installed.
My network audio improved, which set me thinking about losing Ethernet all together and using a Fibre Network setup.
Thats been on hold for a while with other stuff to do, but with the new Dac/streamer setup I’ll look into it again.
Definitely worth doing, not too expensive and if it eliminates more noise n stuff that’s always good.
The filter you linked to James is very interesting, I'll do some reading up on it.
Could be just the ticket, and a lot simpler to implement.
cheers.

Am in Rhodes for the week, have left it running whilst I'm away so it'll have a good few hours on when I get back (Just received it the day before we left). 60 day return policy so if I don't feel it's an improvement it'll be going back.
Looks a nice bit of kit Ali.
Look fwd to hearing what you think of it when your back.
Was looking at the spec on that DAC on Audioholics, Gary.
It's insane.
Bring it here immediately, wanna hear it.
Can it beat my Firebottle modded Lampizator with Western Electric VT-25 valves in it?
I wonder...
My DAC will lie, but the spec on that thing sez it shouldn't.
It's all a fix. It's all pretend. Government is not your friend.
Yeah,

Don’t really care about measurements though, if it sounds good it sounds good.

Ikea style shelf location pins came with a silicone pad on them, but have fallen off over the years.
I've used Blu-tak, self adhesive pads all that stuff, currently not all shelves are the same.
Some are even just sitting glass on metal pin, which aint great.
So decided to fix it, nice way to pass the time of a wet Sunday afternoon I think, I enjoy dabbling with this stuff and it keeps me out of trouble. https://theartofsound.net/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
M6 Brass Nyloc nut, soldered to shelf brass location pin.
Sillicone Nitride ceramic balls inserted in the nut's nylon "cup" ('a La Naim Fraim concept) and shelves sat on that.
In my setup I've tried to minimise vibration and its harmful effects where I could, and this is just another step. How much difference, who knows, but I'll be happier knowing its done.
This has been a niggle for me for a while, this should give a much better shelf interface with less transferred vibration.
Big thread over on the Naim forum discussing the Fraim and how to recreate the effectiveness of it, Ceramic ball bearings on glass is the way to go.
And as theres a little play in the nylon "cup" that holds the ball bearing, this should level the shelves out much better than they are at the moment.
The Manufacturers of my Hifi rack, Stands Unique (sadly RIP) offered improved ‘carbon support’ shelf pegs, so they knew there was room for improvement.
Every little helps!

Spot on Kevin.
4-6 weeks lead time though, so a long wait.
I pushed the boat out on the Holo May KTE dac, the Serene Pre was designed specifically to bring out the best in it. Reviews are fantastic.
It also works as a Class A Headphone amp, from its 3 ohm XLR output, so opens up that to me too.
Holo Audio make great gear, the engineering level is nuts.
Their Holo Red streamer is next level good compared to what I used before, its great kit.
Happy to have the Holo Audio Stack, sure theres better out there but its a good stopping off point for me.
I think it it was made anywhere else but China it could be a LOT more expensive.
Having the units stacked together reminds me of the Densen Amps I used to have, always liked how they looked and its the same for the Holo Audio stuff.

The Topping is very clean, massive value for its price and dare I say it I prefer it to my PS Audio Pre?
Wanted to try it in my system first to see how I got on with it, and its really great. A few niggles though, not sure Id be happy long term.
But cant help think the matching Serene (the KTE version I'm going for) is the way forward.
The Preamp can be the heart of the system, so worth getting this one right I think.

I will be interested to see how you get on with the new Pre.
For the money, I have no complaints about the Topping, but I think the functionality could be improved.
What is the difference between the Serene and the Bliss?
The Bliss is just a headphone amplifier.

Think the Bliss functions as a pre as well?
Just to a lesser extent than the Serene.
Better HPA though, it being secondary with the Serene.
Looks like a very logical step for your next preamp Gary. Seriously well thought out preamp and very high specs. I expect it is very clean and transparent.
Wish Holo Audio would bring out a power amp!

Neutral and as clear as a bell too.
Mines was recapped not that long ago, so plenty of life left.
If anything it'd be a speaker upgrade at this point, ATC's mibbay?
But thats years down the line, if at all.

'I've SEEN things.... "
Digital music can still Shock you.
Genuinely.
This is my Endgame, anyone financially sane's really?
Diminishing returns is a real thing, an MSB Dac (or the like) is 10% better but 250% more expensive.
Took a major punt,
The reviews helped.
Happy with my Choice.
Great it’s worked out Gary. I am sure the May KTE can produce some awesome results if my Cyan 2 is anything to go by which is apparently 75-80% the performance of the May DAC.
I too have been gobsmacked by what I have heard from some digital material which has far exceeded expectations and far exceeded anything I have heard from my analog rig. Holo Audio really do seem to have found the magic formula and unleashed maybe the full potential from digital audio?

Out of interest, how much of your final 2019 system is still in place?
I would love to try the Holo DAC, but I need to fit a new liner in my pool next year, so HiFi funds will be limited.

On the theme about how much spent on hifi; I’m currently using a Hafler 101/200 that I bought 2nd hand in 1981! Had it recapped, etc.,a few years ago.its outlasted many amps, including a six-pack DNM, a valve set-up, even the Cadbury Neurochrome.
Currently thinking of Avantgarde Zero set-up, though I’m tempted by SPEC 99 amp and either unobtanium/Canton 1000, or the Glasgow equivalent (you guys know what I mean),*** as I have a lovely Reimyo dap999 dac.
Missed out Avantgarde Duos I spend 5 days fetching from Arran.AND my lovely Klipschorns that had to go when we moved house in 1996-no proper corners here!
Looking at my listening, the way I usually hear music is late at night via my Ether 2 planar headphones/i-Decco amp.
Thanks Ali!

Ah the Cadbury Neurochrome.
I'm glad I chose that colour for the anodising and it aquired the nickname Cadbury.
Who on here has had it in their system, I can't remember who I first sold it to?

Densen pre?
Densen pre?
A new pre to replace the Topping yeah,
but the Holo Audio Serene KTE, to match the Dac.
Long lead time on it, but will be worth the wait.
It can be used as a headphone amp from one set of its balanced XLR outputs, and night time listening on cans is something I miss.
The old friend is Meze headphones,
had the 99 Classics which were great, but picked up their bigger brother the 109 Pros

Nice mate, should be worth the wait.
Update on the vinyl front?
Due to a "mishap" the record players been out of action for a while now, but decided to get it back up n running, and call it done.
Two things?
Getting Jony at Audio Origami to rewire my tonearm with some of his "secret sauce" and upgrading the stock cart that came with my Project X8 balanced turntable.
One of these incoming, a Hana ML Moving Coil cartridge.

From reviews and forum opinion, this seems to be (like how I try to plan most of my gear) the Sweet Spot diminishing returns wise, and for me nowadays I just need vinyl to be "good enough", so not a rabbit hole I need to go down again.
Been there done that?
The "Dream combo" Michell Gorbe/SME V with top end Dynavector cart didn't get me to where my digital is now, so not chasing the "Vinyl Dream" like you might read about.
Where I am vinyl wise is where Im staying.
Just wanted to stick a fork in it and call it done with making the most of the platform I've got.
A fully balanced turntable and phonostage, make the most of the great arm I've got with a rewire, and get a "call it done" cartridge.
More a digital guy nowadays but have a substantial bunch of records,
every single one of them I remember where I was when THAT track hit hard, or where and when I bought them...
And thats never a bad thing, the smiles you get when you remember makes it worth it!
Sometimes its not always about chasing absolute sound quality, theres other stuff too :)
So did my research as always and getting a "one and done" MC Cartridge and an arm rewire.
Happy days.

I wonder how many folk use night-time headphone listening as their main usage?
I bought my Ether2s from Ali,I recall, after years of Wharfedale planar-magnetics.
The Wharfedale are excellent even though over 60 years old, though you do have
To run them from speaker outlets to get a reasonable volume.i
Use a Peachtree iDecco amp which has a built-in iPod socket.
Like Ali, I have a 686 amp, but remember the CADBURY 286!
The only time I use headphones is when using the computer. Despite having two sets of Koss headphones (ESP6 electrostatics and a PRO4AA), I dislike listening to headphones for more than about a quarter of an hour
To me they are unnatural: with the sound appearing to be inside your head, and when you move your head the limited stereo image moves with it, unlike listening to speakers.
Good to hear you have found a tonearm/cartridge combination that you are happy with and one which will probably see you out. I rarely buy vinyl these days; and when I do it is used rather than new as in general I'm not impressed with the quality of new pressings.
For vinyl replay I have settled with using an Ikeda 'cantileverless' moving coil cartridge in a Ikeda-modified 12" Ortofon arm on a Thorens 124/II turntable, or a Breuer 4A arm with a Van Den Hul 'One' cartridge.
Hana cartridges are very well regarded, so I expect you will be delighted with yours. :)
I also hate headphones. On the odd occasion I do listen at night I use the much smaller speakers on the TV system at fairly low volume.

My budget-ish headphones (AKG K550) are falling apart, even though like Barry they get occasional use on the laptop. They do what they do quite well though.
Used to have some of these in the 70s, I remember them being quite good, though my Wharfedale Denton speakers weren't setting the bar very high.

Yeah,

The 109 Pro's should be a step up?
Can listen to stuff late at night from the AppleTV with the Sony bluetooth cans, but for watching bluray movies, listening to CDs or vinyl I couldn't.
Thought I wouldnt miss it when I sold the 99 Classics (to fund other stuff) but I did. :)
Nice to have that facility back again, cant wait for the Holo Pre to arrive, so I can plug em in!

The Cart will be going to Audio Origami to fit when Jony rewires the arm, so no unboxing tommorow for me if its that (Suspect it is)

Posties been,
Just a wee tweak nothing major.
With the new Holo Audio gear, I wanted to get the most out of it?
The sounds still all bit all over the place, but the "moving average" of sound quality is consistently getting better as the gear burns in.
When its on song its pretty wonderful. More to come I think.
Thought of stuff I had lying around to try to see if it would make any difference?
Had a bunch of isolation feet in my spares box.
All discarded as (as the time) not being the best sounding option.
The Herbies and IsoAcoustics stuff sounded better to me with the kit I tried at the time so everything else was discarded.
But as always one to experiment... :)
I tried a bunch of different isolation products I had kicking around.
Immediately obvious the best of the bunch was the old SDS constrained layer damping feet I had, particularly under the Holo Dac and its seperate power supply...
Always liked the Sound Damped Steel isolation feet, as they were based on sound engineering principles of MANAGING the vibrations (turning them to heat) through constrained layer damping,... and not some random "Audiophile" JuJu.
SDS's bread and butter is heavy industry scale vibration management, think power stations, fluid distribution systems and the like.
The hifi thing is a spin off.
(Great way to use waste material from industrial installs!)
Oh boy, this is better. A lot better.
The feet on the Holo gear have obviously not been an afterthought,
but the Dac and power supply sounded WORSE with the IsoAcoustics feet... and that usually means the gear responds better to managing the vibrations, rather than damping them like the IsoAcoustics stuff does.
The SDS stuff is the best example of that I've tried, and the match with the Holo Audio gear seems pretty fantastic.
Bought my isolation feet from them years ago?
2mm thick.
Turns out they brought out an improved version a short time back, had no idea.
So I got curious, and ordered a bunch! :)
https://i.imgur.com/NBjmL2A.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/Mdbe0Wj.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/GtgkFTh.jpeg
Smaller in DIA at 50mm, so will look less bulky under my gear, and twice as thick at 4mm.
Getting my Mechanical Engineering head on for a bit, obviously the resonant frequency has changed - so a different proposition from the old ones?
Good email back and forth with SDS, no problem sending them back for whatever reason.
They are staying, turns out they sound a lot better too.
Bought a bunch and tried them out under my Holo Audio May dac and Red DCC Streamer.
Tried them one bit of Gear at a time and the effect was cumulative.
My System sits on a glass shelf rack, and thats never ideal.
These Sound Damped Steel isolation feet are maybe the solution to that?
Stuck em under my CD Transport and Topping Preamp, too, and it's all an improvement.
Great stuff, another wee nudge in the right direction.
Expect the incoming Holo Audio Serene KTE preamp (having same case design as the Dac) will benefit from good isolation as well, so have a play with that too.
Still enjoying the Journey :)
Just goes to show how One size DOESNT fit all?
The CD Transport previously just had the IsoAcoustics feet below it (and other stuff)
Removing the Iso's and fitting just the SounDampedSteel feet robbed it of its magic.
Put them back and yeah, thats better.
Put the SDS feet UNDER the IsoAcoustics though... effectively isolating the glass shelf from it and taking away the bad effects of that... is a big improvement.
https://i.imgur.com/bSHeMcT.jpeg
Combined effort it seems?
If it matters to you... give different stuff a go?
Its important to try all this stuff with the different kit you have, seems it all responds differently to what you do to it?
As always,
Try this nonsense for yourself, with your own gear, cos you just never know.
Nice to see someone else bothered by all this sort of shenanigans still as it does start to go down a mysterious black hole with no absolute right or wrong other than what you can hear. I know acoustic isolation and vibration control is a controversial subject and very subjective. It is certainly a bespoke tweak as what works for one piece of kit does the opposite with another and as we all have very different systems operating in very different acoustic environments. one size does not fit all.
The whole area of vibration / acoustic control is now being taken seriously by a number of manufacturers who are incorporating it into their case designs and circuit topology and not simply bunging some rubber feet on the bottom of their kit!
I have found much improvement in the efforts I have made with all sorts of materials and not at all surprised you have found the products you have evaluated contribute to an uplift in SQ.
Great to see/hear your efforts in this area Gary.
You bet Jim. :)
Say to everyone,
if it’s something your curious about important to try it out in your own system.

It’s funny that you mention SDS feet under IsoPucks. That is the exact configuration under my BB3, but this is on an IKEA chopping board shelf.
I have just recently ordered some new IsoPuck minis to go under the KIN, which will leave me 4 spare, so I will try them under the rest of the components to see what gives the best benefit.
I just wish they sold them in packs of 4.

Reckon I have the "hardware" in place now?
Like the previous tweak with isolating the kit with Soundamped Steel plates, nowadays Im looking at bringing out the best of the gear I have.
Really enjoying my CDs again through the Shanling CD Transport over USB to the Holo Audio Red DCC, converting the CDs to i2s into the dac.
The Transport has an i2s output, but connected this way through the Holo Red sounds better.
Theres two cables in this setup?
Have a good USB cable hooking up the Transport to the Holo red, but hadn't paid much attention to the Hdmi cable I'd stuck between the Red and the May Dac.
I'd assumed as the May Dac "does its thing" here, cables wouldnt make that much of a difference so stuck with a generic one I had lying around.
Given the nature of the Dac with its internal clocking and all the other internal stuff it does, hadnt given it a thought?
But I hadnt tried it ... and turns out... that was a mistake.
Recently,
I've been playing around with different HDMI cables to connect the Holo Red to the May Dac.
Noticable difference between a "standard" Hdmi cable, a Wireworld Silver plated copper HDMI and a Bluejeans certified FE-Bonded Pair cable.
Interesting!
That showed me that it was worth maximising the quality of the connection between the Holo red and the May Dac, to eek out the best of what the gear can do?
That connection is a big part of what makes playing CDs from the Shanling (and digital files on HDD connected to it) able to sound its best after all?
One and done - So I concluded its worth paying some attention to get the best out of it.
So I did.
Did my research and one i2s cable kept coming up as a bit of a giant killing "Sleeper"?
My kinda solution - best bang for buck, a great "hifi story" and great subjective value.
Beating divorce causing priced Siltech, Nordost and top tier Audioquest cables at their own game, but at a fraction of the price.
(Though on paper for a half meter length of wire I'm off my head...)
One and done though, already been convinced (my ears my system) a better cable here can make a noticable difference. And want the best out of the kit I've already paid for.
So pulled the trigger on the "sleeper" i2s cable.
This is manufactured specifically for i2s audio, it uses HDMI connectors but its silver cores are designed specifically only to work for audio, so wont work as a normal HDMI cable.
Spoke with their Engineer over the phone: Cryo treated solid core silver conducters in teflon air dialectric and some stuff he said was "proprietary and couldn't talk about"
They know exactly what they are doing.
Gonna sting a bit but know it'll be worth it.
Tubulus Concentus i2s 0.5m cable currently winging it's way from the Netherlands, to hook up my Holo Red DCC to the May Dac.

You need to find an alternative to Imgur for your post to make any sense. ;)
After nearly a 4 week wait the final piece of the digital puzzles here.
My listening nowadays is mostly CDs, my own Flac library and streaming from Qobuz, Apple Music and YouTube.
Vinyls its own separate thing.
So 3 aspects to the digital side?
Being able to use the Holo Audio Red as a DDC and reclocker for the CD transport had improved CDs significantly, Flac albums and Qobuz though, streamed over network to the Red doesn’t use its recklocking/filtering magic though, but still sounds great.
All other stuff music streaming wise is from my AppleTV, it being hooked up to my Oppo 203’s HDMi input.
Audio connection Oppo to the May Dac is using an AudioQuest Carbon digital coax….
… Well, it WAS.
I figured out the Holo Red’s settings could be tweaked to fool the AppleTV that the Red could function as an “Airplay speaker” through its config menu?
That way I was able to send the AppleTV’s digital audio lossless over Airplay to the Holo Red, and output directly to the May dac from there,
cutting out the need to pass it through the Oppo 203 altogether.
Far more direct connection with less in the way, but would it sound different?
You bet it did.
It always sounded great but the extra cabling and processing before affected the sound.
The direct connection was much better!
I said in a previous post I’d tried different HDMI cables to hook up the Holo Red to the May Dac, and that a better cable made a difference here.
So:
Given learning there’s ANOTHER trick up the Holo Reds toolbox, and that different cables between the Red and the Dac could sound better or worse, decided that I didn’t want the performance of my gear held back by compromises on cables, “Do it once and do it right” is a saying I keep coming back to, and works for me. :)
You need to find an alternative to Imgur for your post to make any sense. ;)

Doesn't show for me mate.
I think quite a few folks are using the Holo Red simply as a DDC as it apparently does a great job in this function. The fact that it is actually streamer as well makes it a superb piece of kit.
Great Gary that you have managed to find a way of cutting out another piece of kit ( oppo). I have always found less is more!:)

need to find an alternative to Imgur then.
On it.
According to Malcolm (willbewill): It's due to the Online Safety Act and Imgur not willing to put age restriction procedures in place.
I use postimage.com. It's free to use (at the moment, but that could change).
Another image hosting app that people recommend is imgbb.com. It too is free to use.
However I suspect that all image hosting apps will start to charge in the future.
Good luck.
Thanks Barry,
looking for an alternative, will take a look.
Yeah,
been using a VPN for a few years now, pics show up fine at my end.. but of course they would.
That’s why I asked.
For our “Online safety” ya say.. another thing I’ll need to double check.
(But that’s another conversation…)

Imgur not showing to third parties in the UK is a real pain, for example vinylengine use it, so if you use any of their apps (such as those for tonearm alignment) you can't print off the results or discuss them here.
Age restriction measures are intended to prevent minors from looking at unsuitable material, such as pornography or self-harming.
Coming closer to home if any Members put up items for sale, they need to post images, and in your case we need to see what the "postie" has brought you. :)
Me share a Postie pic..?
C'mon now, ain't ever gonna happen... :)
In other News:
The Stereos changed a wee bit, have some more stuff to post.
Will sort it.
You need to find an alternative to Imgur for your post to make any sense. ;)
Thats a bummer,
pics in my Gallety thread won’t show now, damn you Kier Starmer and your ‘nanny state’ :)
Found a great alternative in https://imgbox.com/
Playing AppleTv lossless audio (Apple music ‘n YouTube) to the Holo Red via Airplay, then onto the May Dac over its i2s connection.
BIG improvement over the AppleTV fed through the Oppo 203’s HDMI input to the Dac.
Sometimes the technology works out?

Speaking of i2s?
Postie delivered this on Friday, a Tubulus Concentus i2s cable, 0.5m.
4 week build/lead time so bought it ages ago, finally arrived.
https://www.tubulus.net/product/tubulus-concentus-i2s-cable/
https://images2.imgbox.com/be/62/sa3YpQBr_o.jpeg?download=true
Look at the plugs!
Solid metal construction, very chunky and dense, (like m’self)
Best build quality think I’v seen in a cable, they aren’t messing around.

Compared to a ‘Normal’ HDMI cable…
https://imgbox.com/f4sLky1X
https://images2.imgbox.com/18/25/f4sLky1X_o.jpeg?download=true
Tubulus has silver cores in Teflon tubes for air dialectic, is it very thick, and wired for i2s audio only (PS Audio standard)
Its a beast of a cable, 0.5m but quite heavy.
https://imgbox.com/f4sLky1X
Had played around with different HDMI cables for i2s between the Red and May Dac, and found they made a difference here?
So decided I didn’t want the cable to hold back what the Holo gear was capable of, so went straight to my “one and done” cable, knowing it wasn’t holding anything back sound wise.
Cant get over the level of improvement this cable has made, probably the most obvious cable improvement I’ve had in my system.
Costed not far off the price of the Red for a 0.5m bit of wire, sure, but I see it as another important part of the Red, it’s part of it, and the sound I’m hearing is night and day better than the Bluejeans cable I had in before, which was the best of the bunch I’d tried.
Didnt know if a better cable would make a difference for i2s with the Holo Audio gear, but tried it for myself and it really does.
Online opinion varied (as always)… knew I had to try for myself.
Really feel I’m hearing more of what the Holo Audio gear is capable of, and it’s next level good.
More to come when it burns in as with all cables.
Theres a Holo Audio Facebook group I’m a member of,
and a few of the guys there have my exact Holo Audio setup, and say this cable still improves after a few months, so will wait and see.
I’ll just enjoy it, and know that’s digital now DONE.
He says… probably :eyebrows:
Surprised you didn't go for the Ximius, it's only a mere €1,500. :D
Or the Chord Music at £5000!

"Sensible" heads prevailed Barry...

Holo Audio Serene KTE preamp.
Dropping this week, should be here for the weekend.
Shout out to Elise Audio for their fantastic service, bought all my Holo Audio gear from them, the perfect Hifi Dealer.

Mines is the KTE hot-rodded version.
I got it to bring out the best from my matching Holo May KTE Dac.
Apparently according to the Holo design guru Jeff Zu, he designed it for exactly that.
With the Holo Red, May Dac and now Serene Pre in my audio chain now I’d expect the Synergy thing to do its stuff here?
Also,
Would expect this to bring about a major shift in my systems sound, the Pre being so important in the chain, shall see.
A few months of ups and downs as it burns in - heck some of my other stuff is still at that stage - but just means you have it all to look forward to as it settles down.
Cool.
I’ll be running it fully balanced direct from my May Dac, and Pro-Ject DS3B balanced phonostage.
Balanced is always the way to go, Digitals more a priority for me than vinyl nowadays.
That could change though, who knows, but been down the Turntable rabbit hole, sticking with my Pro-Ject X8
Interestingly,
Its 2nd set of XLR outputs runs 3 Ohms impedance, so can be used as a balanced headphone output with converter cable?
Ive read its VERY good running headphones, so picked up a pair of Meze Audio 109 Pro’s to pair with it.
Nice looking things these.

Was waiting on the Serene coming, had the Meze’s for a while now but never heard ‘em!
The Serene replaces initially a PS Audio BHK Pre, then a Topping Pre90.
I tried to see if a more “straight wire with gain” measuring Preamp would be enough and I could call it done.
Great amp, totally silent and transparent but in practice it wasn’t the best match with the May.
Never thought I was hearing the May to its full potential with it.
The Topping is great, punches above its weight for sure, but this is for sure the better amp.
and designed specifically for the May, so there’s that too.
Will help me get more out my balanced vinyl setup as well?
Well,
it will when finally get my finger out and ask Jonny at Audio Origami to rewire my tone arm and fit the new Hana ML cartridge I have.
With recent upgrades I can say amps and digital are done now, just the vinyl to set up again.
Interesting journey this.
I should imagine the Serene preamp will bring even more clarity and maybe resolution to the system. If you get better soundstage and imaging that could also be a bonus. The dual mono construction of the Serene with separate power supplies for each channel look like a thoroughly sorted design.
Think you will have a world class set up there Gary especially for your digital playback.
I like the slim elegant looks of your preamp and agree using balanced connections throughout makes a lot of sense. Most pickup cartridges are inherently balanced so using a balanced phono stage is a good way to go.
My preamp is dual mono, including power supplies and uses XLR connectors.
Posties Been....
The Serene is finally here, after a 6 week journey from China.
Hope it works!

Brilliant Gary, at last! What a painfully long journey!?
Few dinks in the box? I had some speakers delivered with a huge gash in the side of the box but fortunately they were all ok.
Just remembered the Serene will be double boxed.

Will enjoy the Holo Audio stack Ali, cheers mate.
Your man cave?
That's a nice wee set of bookshelf speakers.you got there!
Crikey,
They are almost as big as your old OBs!
Will really drive that room, what are they Ali?
How's the bass interaction with the walls, ok?
Do you have room treatment in play?
Ali Tait
03-11-2025, 15:19
Lol, yeah man cave. Think they're bigger than the OB's, 127cm tall. They're Lumley Lampros 400's. Probably about 20 years old. Took a punt from an auction and glad I did, these are by far the best speakers I've had. The IPL's were great but these make them sound like toys. Drivers are all pristine. A few marks on the cabs but I suspect that was from the auction house moving them around. Nothing too bad other than one gouge that I did getting them up here. Other than that they look almost new, don't think they had a hard life. Equivalent price today would be 15k. Solid Cherrywood cabs and lead lined, which goes a long way to explaining the weight. :-)
They have tappings for bass, mids and top so very room tunable- 5 levels to select from for each.
https://i.postimg.cc/tTr9BhLF/Whats-App-Image-2025-11-03-at-15-17-27.jpg (https://postimg.cc/XGCMJyNv)
I've stuck some foam corner pads each side of the screen in the corners- you can see them poking up above the speakers but other than that no treatment and can't say they made any difference. On the face of it the room should be too small for them but there isn't any issues I can hear. I think the fact that the walls are not very solid- you can flex them in and out- actually helps- no bass boom.
The fun bit was getting them up into the loft. Did it by myself which was fun. Think the Egyptians would be proud of me lol.

The most fun was getting them up the stairs to the loft hatch. got them out of the car and onto a sack barrow and up four steps to the front door without too many problems, but the internal stairs were more problematic, as the horizontal part of each step protrudes over the vertical bit and they were just too heavy to negotiate this. Managed a couple, but I knew I wouldn’t make it to the top. After a bit of head scratching, I found some heavy duty bubble wrap which I secured to one side of the cabinet with a strap, then tied a rope around the speaker and lay it down on that side on the stair risers. The bubble wrap had a smooth shiny side which slid on the carpet fairly well, so I just pulled them up the stairs with them sliding up the risers on the bubble wrap.
Used a chain hoist to get them into the loft, which took some time but was a breeze in comparison to the stairs.
Gotta do what you gotta do Ali... nice mate.
Real nice.

Ah yes they certainly would, had one here sometime back and had great control and clarity. Using two is taking things to another level I’m sure.

I expect the build quality it state of the art?
As good as anything else Ive seen Jim.
You need to see it to get it, its quite a thing.
The relay driven volume knob is something else, smooth as silk with a satisfying mechanical click that reverberates through the chassis thats like a Lieca camera or high end watch.
Never experienced anything like it with stereo gear, the industrial design and perception of quality with this thing is stunning.
A view of the preamps interior:

As you say, a beautifully neat layout and construction.
Review here of the Holo audio KTE pairing over on Audiocircle?

Agree with this regarding the sound quality, there’s some synergy magic going on here, massive step up over the Topping preamp with the May Dac.

The relay driven volume knob is... sublime.
1dB increments apparently.

All that will do is to blow the fuse as the load, if all are switched on, exceeds 3kW.
Mind you a fancy mains distribution strip, 'blessed' by an audio retailer will make better toast! :D
None of that's to do with the main system that has its own wall sockets.
TV system runs of it though and that sounds great.
My main system has its own separate ring main of 18 sockets fed by a separate 30A RCMCB, connected to the meter via a Henley bock.
The only non-audio item connected to it is a side light, and sometimes a laptop or phone charger.
Mines runs on "thoughts 'n prayers" :)
Back in the day when I was looking into this power stuff, the findings of a guy called Roy Riches played a big part?
Good back and forth with him when I was setting my stuff up.
Got me thinking of benefits of balanced power, tight connections, quality fuses and the like.
Was all confirmed at a session of the "Scottish Mafia" AOS group at mine, where Ali brought over his self built balanced mains unit, not a jaw didnt hit the floor when we plugged it in.
One of those Hifi memories you remember!
And set me on a path,
Jeez, how many years ago was THAT Ali?
We're getting old man...
Barry,
I would incorporate a discrete 30amp supply setup like yours, along with my current 10KVA balanced mains TX if I could, but its not possible where I live at the moment.
Its the way to go 100%.

RCA shorting caps for unused RCA inputs on the Serene preamp, May dac and Shanling CD Transport.
https://images2.imgbox.com/d0/b0/4VjGdEuL_o.jpg
Nice wee bump in soundstage focus, learned with tweaking my previous PS Audio dac, shorting the inputs could reduce electrical noise getting into the unit, worked well with the Holo Audio gear as well.
Cool.

The May is my final dac, and I know from experience over the years the improvement the SR Fuses can bring.
Had a few over the years, and use them throught my System now.
the only ones I didnt get on with was the SR Blue.
There was 2A Purple fuse in the Dac which replaced the stock Holo Audio fuse.
I'll find a place elsewhere in the system for it.
The Pink (from various forums scattered across the Web) is a good step better than the Purple, particularly in a lower noise floor, a quality the dac excels at, so will be a good match.
Dynamics and soundstage depth too are supposed to be noticably better from those who have compared them.
Shall see, fitting it later this evening.
EDIT
Sounds noticably "different' from the Purple, from experience its gonna be up and down for at least a few weeks.
Plumbed it in, just going to sit back and let it do its thing.
All about bringing out the best of my Holo Audio gear, my Serene KTE preamp still has the stock Holo Red fuse, but not going there as the Pre is still new and sound is still all over the place as the amp burns in.
Will put another SR Pink in there after another couple of months on it and call it done.
Stepping off the Fuse Train after this,
Holo gear has the Pinks, the rest has Purples, which will be Job 'Jobbed.

Is the Pink fuse new to SR? It will be interesting to know if it performs even better than the purple. I am convinced fuses like these make a difference after hearing the Holo Audio Red in my Cyan 2 but now very curious as how much better the SR fuses are?
The Pink is SRs latest fuse, and supercedes the Purple
Swapping in the SR Purple over the stock Holo Red fuse was a noticable improvement Jim, I reckon this would apply to your Cyan 2 dac as well.
Had music playing overnight, working from home today so on my break I sat down and had a listen.
It doesnt sound 'bright' exactly, but compared to the sound I had before its brighter spotlit, not 'etched' exactly...but more hyper detailed, as opposed to an organic sound field where everything is part of everything else.
The classic 'analogue' Holo May sound?
These things take a long long time to properly break in, and the Purple sounded very different to what it eventually settled down to, so zero concerns.
Loving the extra detail as well as the wider and deeper soundstage Im getting now, only snag is its just more of a "Chord Dave" type sound than Im used to?
But the Holo magic will come through again once everything settles down.
The Pink is SRs latest fuse, and supercedes then Purple
Swapping in the SR Purple over the stock Holo Red fuse was a noticable improvement Jim, I reckon this would apply to your Cyan 2 dac as well.
Had music playing overnight, working from home today so on my break I sat down and had a listen.
It doesnt sound 'bright' exactly, but compared to the sound I had before its brighter spotlight, not Etched but more hyper detailed as opposed to an organic sound field where everything is part of everything else.

Until you hear what these fuses do it's hard to believe the difference they make. Will be interesting to write up the comparison between the Purple and pink fuses once they have "run" in.
Of course some folk will just say the only difference is the color!
Yup, 100%.
Power quality is everything,
and when you think of it the incoming AC is passed through the fuse before it even gets to your equipment.
And yet us Audio experts fuss about spikes, footers, cable direction and the like?
These things all make an impact but by how much?
How some folk say the incoming AC choke point (i.e. Fuse) can’t make a difference I’ve no idea.
Learned not to try and convince them though, none of my business what others think. :)
Same can be said about cables, some folk can hear the difference and some can’t.
Some years back I was messing with plugs and thought I could hear a difference between different sides of a double socket! It may have only been a small difference but nonetheless I heard it. I am sure there is a technical reason or I am just bonkers!

What kind of fuses do you use in the plugtops for your Holo equipment?
Barry,
do you mean the IEC cable plug fuse, as opposed to the internal fuse on the unit itself?
If so, there isn’t one.
All my Hifi gear is fed from a hardwired Shuko mains block, powered directly from a tail from the balanced mains unit, which is hardwired into the mains.
From there it’s Wireworld silver Shuko IEC cables feeding all the black boxes.
Get your point though about why fuss with fancy internal fuses if there’s a Bussman (or worse!) in the plug. :)
My Balanced mains unit is twin pole RCBO protected, as well as the RCDs in the main feed, so no issue with not having a plug fuse.
Thats only there to protect the cable anyway, not the equipment.
Fair enough, though I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say your balanced mains unit is hardwired into the mains. Is it wall mounted, and what is the current rating of the twin-pole RCDs?
Most balanced mains units, the commercial Russ Andrews type ones anyway, are an extension block which plugs into the wall?
Mines taps directly into the CU.
No idea about the current rating of the RCDs, my spark took care of all that stuff when he set it up.
If it "plugs into the wall" it is not hardwired and something has to be fitted into the plug; unless, that is, you use Shuko sockets which are individually protected by their own circuit breaker.
But as you say the whole was installed by your sparky, who no doubt would have issued you with a certificate for the work done.
It doesnt plug into the wall?
The Russ Andrew’s type ones do.
System plugs into a Shuko mains block, fed from balanced mains, which is directly tapped into the CU.
This is mine.

Yeah,
safety was important Barry, can’t muck around electrical stuff, not worth it, it’s only Hifi.
Now that looks the business. Good to see ganged two-pole circuit breakers are used.
Yes.
Agree 100% on the safety aspect.
Looked into it all Bigly at the time. :)
Current digital lash up...

Temporary loaner from a friend,
power supply in my Holo May popped and is packed up for collection Monday for return to Elise Audio for test/repair under warranty.
Would cost me £342 to ship it fully insured back to them in London, told them, they said no way we'll arrange to collect it.
Really Outstanding Customer Service.
Probably going back to China to be pulled apart (as failures are unheard of) so will see how we get on. Have it to look forward to again ☺️
The SMSL SU-1 and Douk USB ddc are a lot of fun, very mature transparent digital sound, hits way above what you'd expect at the price.
Still have my music which is the main thing.
:hmm:
You have not had it long, and if it needs to go back for investigation you could be without it for months.
Is there no chance of a replacement unit?
I know Kev,
but these things can happen.
Think if that length of time I’d think they would hopefully give me a new unit yeah.
Looked after me really well, great guys to deal with.
Good aftersales support is good.
On the flip side, my Sony preamp/DAC is just entering its 37th year of flawless operation.

Probably it'll pack in now I said that.

... anyone else smell burning bakelite?
lol. It's got great build quality not BPC.
Was only £350 so could always get another I suppose. Of course something packing in is always a good excuse to try something new.
Any progress on the speaker search?
Not yet,
Have a shortlist (thats getting longer...) will start with that and whittle it down when Ive saved up the pennies.
I'd say if the shortlist is under 20 options you're probably missing some you should try. Lots of really good speakers out there now if you have significant amount of money to spend (or will have).
If you've not been to a show for a while that would maybe be worth doing. Not a perfect environment for serious demos but gives you an idea. If it's crap at the show it probably is crap - and the opposite.
The 'traditional' old UK favourite suspects are mostly off the pace now I think.
Agree on giving new models a spin, the technology and design has caught up, not quite to the extent of digital but it’s getting there.
Fyne Audio (ex Tannoy engineers) has caught my eye most from the newcomers.
Also giving the likes of Magnepan a spin, not heard a ‘static in my system before.
Perceptions of a nightmare to correctly place and lack of bass, but you never know till you try.

Certainly worth a try you seem to have quite a bit of space to be able to move them about.
Fyne - I had a listen to the flagship 'Vintage 15' at a show, with the optional supertweeters. They grew on me a bit after a shakey start, but IMO what I have now does what they do a lot better at less than a quarter of the money. Do work in smaller room though just like big Tannoys do.

I’m sure you know that Loud and Clear stock Fyne speakers.

Yup.
Iain there is a Pal.
Gave me a discount on my Rega P2 back in the day at Stereo Stereo with my first student Grant, was a few quid short of the TT with my preferred Nakaoka MP30, so he took one off another demo turntable and sold me that.
Jeez… what was that, 96?
Gave the guy my Business ever since, He’s a very smart cookie!
Reminded him of that when I picked up my P10 from Loud n Clear, he genuinely blushed. :)

As you have had this unit for only six months or so, I think the importer should loan you a replacement whilst yours is being seen to. I knew of one dealer who would do that with any piece of gear he sold.
Hopefully being a power supply it shouldn't take too long to diagnose the problem and fix.
Fingers crossed!

Magneplanar aren't 'statics just to be pedantic, they used distributed magnets.
Jason at Arke Audio is trialling some Maggies with his Kratos bass enhancers, could be worth a listen.

Well…
who’da thunk it.
The most unlikely (and welcome) thing happened this morning.
UPS had been booked to collect my 2 box Dac today and I hadn’t taken it out the rack yet for boxing up.
When I last tried powering it on (And failed) I must have left the Dac power switch in the On position without realising it, the PSU wasn’t powering up the Dac so never gave it much thought at the time?
This morning, the PSU that previously wasn’t powering up was… warm - what?!
Dac still not powering up though so what’s going on says I.
On closer inspection it turns out it was me being a “feckin Eejit and the Dac is 100% working fine.
Took it to a mates the previous weekend and I had unboxed and set it up quite late when I got home and was quite tired.
Theres a chunky 19 pin umbilical cable that connects PSU to the Dac unit and, you guessed it, it wasn’t seated properly at the Dac end.
Really heavy plug and it clicks solidly into place when seated correctly.
I hadn’t done it properly, so,Dac wasn’t powering up
What a flippin’ Daftee!
Turns out the fancy SR fuse is intact as well, thought that had popped, so everything’s back the way it was and sounding just fine.
PHEW!
I’ll put it down to a Frank Spencer moment, Haha.
At least you have a happy ending.
Occam’s Razor (or my idiocy) at work!
Had my knickers in a real twist about it, worse case scenario etc?
Goes to show sometimes you just need to take a step back and chill, and look at the situation differently.
I’m laughing about it NOW of course…

All's well that ends well! :)
Those "chunky" connectors are latching designs made by Lemo and 'click' when fully mated, a bit like XLR connectors. An easy mistake to make: I have done the same with the power supply connection for my Levinson preamp.
Now you can concentrate on auditioning new speakers. :)
