Turntables are for me the most interesting bits of Hifi look look at, what does one consider the most Beautiful and the most ugliest turntable ever made.

I still think the Michell Gyrodec is one of the best looking decks ever made.

As to the ugliest, it’s a long list!

John Michell was certainly a cleaver chapie with the design of the Gyro his design has proven to be timeless and continues to sell in reasonably high numbers mostly I have been told due to its looks, the price is still reasonable for a Uk design and is certainly in line with inflation calculator.

For me my Sme 30/12 is not exactly beautiful erring on ugly with its o rings etc kind of industrial, of all the sme turntables I kind of like the model 15 as it has some shape but not can be described as beautiful. The kronos is certainly not pretty, I like the bergman turntables for there clean lines. The Kodo beat I have on loan is quite nice looking but not in white.

Micro Seiki turned out some turntables I thought were gorgeous.

This is the BL-111. Lovely looking thing.

I think that Clearaudio produce some very nice looking turntables. The higher end statement models I don’t care for much as they are just too big and look like some impractical drinks trolley. Some of the smaller ones with all that satin aluminium, Panzerholz and acyrilic are lovely in my eyes.

B&O 4000 tt was one of the best looking I Suppose the transcriptor or whatever it was, in the movie a clockwork orange, was one of the most iconic

I'd agree about the B&O decks of that era, on grounds of simple, elegant design and beauty, if not ultimate sound quality! In today's market, the Technics SP-10R copies without shame its predecessors' looks and I think is about as far as anyone needs to go in terms of cost, looks and function.

http://www.soundhifi.com/images/SP-10R.jpg

There are plenty of ugly decks around, both old and new. Any old EMT deck, for me, fits naturally in the (f)ugly category and you'd have to be resolutely single or have a very understanding partner to have one in the house rather than in a broadcast studio. I'll disagree with Barry over the TD-124 - lovely sounding, functional and refreshingly compact thing, but beautiful? Maybe beautiful like a well looked after Morris Minor but not exactly B&O!

Any turntable that needs a fork lift truck to install is never goping to float my aesthetic boat, but the Acoustical Systems Apolyt adds sheer and perhaps inconvenient bulk to shocking ugliness, narrowly pipping the 'oil rig' range-topping Clearaudio decks for my 'raspberry' prize:

Wot, like a baboon's backside?

This is unusual, Geoff, because you and I often have quite similar tastes, but although it'll undoubtedly be a great turntable and superbly built, it looks like puke! :spew:

Why? Because I HATE BLING!! Especially that shiny 'faux-rosewood' look, combined with a gold platter, which for some inexplicable reason, the Japs seem to love:doh:

It's hi-fi for hairy-chested medallion men... Anyway, do carry on:D

P.S I like the arm!

Stylish, clean, distinctive lines, and you can just about get away with the gold platter, as it sets off the silver nicely (plus, the satin finish nullifies the bling).... Sexy! :exactly:

The challenge would be finding the right plinth to set it off.... Solid ebony, with a block of aluminium, machined to the same finish as the rest of the turntable, sandwiched in between the wood, perhaps? Dunno...:hmm:

Ah, now you're talking, that's RIGHT up my street!! Love pretty much all the Braun stuff. That, for me, is just bang on: 'sober' and functional looking, but with a soupçon of chic. Look at the lovely PHAT headshell on that arm - I could almost EAT it!:D

Pop a nice DL-103 in there, and you'll be in 'radio broadcast-sound' heaven. In fact, I'd love to fit the whole arm onto my own turntable.

Sorry, the Rega does little for me, but I can see where you're coming from, design-wise...

I would love to hear one I had a SP10 MK3 which in my opinion way ahead of the MK2 some years back and regret selling it for £3000 I did not like it that much but had some great qualities I found it had great bass and amazing stability I just found it a bit too precise and a bit clinical. I had it serviced and used a Fidelity Research FR66 and a Ikeda 407 which seemed a good match. I purchased a Vibraplane active air suspension unit for it that transformed the turntable no end but had a noisy compressor. I did look at having a Albert Porter Plinth which is meant to transform it but decided to give in.

Nope, sorry - I love that, although prefer it in the cream and grey finish!

Whereas that Braun PCS-5 is just mingin' to my eyes. I think the biggest issue is the headshell - I hate big, chunky headshells as a rule, unless they're on the end of equally big and chunky arms.

Sorry, but with regard to turntables Beauty is in the ear of the listener - or should be.
So, although my Linn LP12 simply looks like a turntable I consider it beautiful as it produces a reasonably accurate beautiful sound. While listening to the LP12/Ittok/Kiseki Blue Gold Spot 1 of my sons friends (age around 23) asked "Why did they bother inventing CDs when record players can sound so good?"

I still think this is 'easy on the eye' with its beautifully curved edges. Maybe 'beautiful' is going too far, but to me it is a fine balance between the Bauhaus looks of Braun gear (which I admire), and the Scandinavian elegance and 'cool' looks of B&O. I think the Brinkman designs possess a similar fine balance.

Regarding the new Technics SP10, well I have always admired the previous aesthetics and this one thankfully maintains the look - but I have serious reservations about the gold platter. It's verging too close to being a bit 'bling' to my eyes.

But as they say in my local - "De gustibus non disputandem".

AWESOME, Barry...I'll be saving that link!

Personally, I love how they look (and especially sound, with matching Gray Research arm). As you know, the BBC used that combo (mainly the CB-77) in their broadcasting studios for long enough;)

I'd absolutely DIE for one of these babies in mint condition:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/pAumLN.png

The sort of sonic presentation I love from a turntable, and which I've strived to obtain from my own T/T, is the type of sound Radio 1 (especially during the Top 40 chart shows on Sunday nights) and Radio 2 used to produce, back in the early-to-mid 80s, when they broadcast music with vinyl records, using Gates, Technics SP10 and EMT (mostly 950) turntables, with their partnering high-mass arms and broadcast cartridges, tracking at 3g+.

It's a sound that's always stuck in my head: powerful, bold and weighty, with beguiling drive and 'heft', together with a beautifully lucid and expansive midrange, and crystal-clear, smooth top-end, such that the whole sound positively thundered through the speakers in my (then teenage) bedroom, when the likes of 'Two Tribes' came on, from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, or 'Blue Monday', by New Order.

It sounded *so* good, I used to sit utterly transfixed listening to it (through my then big JVC receiver and Mission speakers), and thought to myself: 'one day I'll build a vinyl system which will sound like that!'

And I have - only better!:D

I cited the Empire 598 'Troubadour' as an example of an ugly-looking TT (to my eyes)

I saw one at a dealer in London thirty odd years ago. It's quite 'blingy' in appearance: champagne gold finish and the plastic arm rest lights up (orange) when the deck is switched on. Agree the plinth looks handsome, and the lid uses a glass sheet rather than plastic used by others everywhere else.

As they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I cited the Empire 598 'Troubadour' as an example of an ugly-looking TT (to my eyes)

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Facebook/AudioVideo%20photos/1934673_1033445845153_6699746_n.jpg

Yeah, undoubtedly it's a little blingy, but for some reason it doesn't offend my eyes like some. I'm probably mesmerised by the lovely fat headshell on the arm! I just love high-mass headshells like that, which hide all the fugly mounting hardwire and cartridge leads:)

Nice looking linn I love the plinth I was was forever swapping Linn LP12's in my younger years must have owned around 7 of them the best sounding to my ears are always the early ones. I have to say my linn lp12 aro vdh grasshopper in early 90s was rather nice. I always liked the lp12 aro in many ways.

I like the motor unit, Jerry, but not in that plinth, as you know my views on shiny 'faux-rosewood'!:D

I think the motor unit would look nice in a plain light-oak, silver, or black plinth:)

I rate the arm in terms of its sound, though! Like a "poor man's" Aro... Good unipivots are rather musical devices:)

All of the regulars in my local have received a classical education () and would agree that in matters of taste there is no dispute. After a few beers they might, after a discussion on Brexit, misquote Voltaire: “Je désapprouve ce que vous dites, mais je défendrai à la mort votre droit à le dire”.

I'm unsure what the 'official' quote is from Voltaire, but as a French speaker, I can say that the use of "Je désapprouve" is somewhat unsuitable and a little stilted in that context, so instead I'd replace it with "Je ne suis pas d’accord", and therefore alter the above quote thus: "Je ne suis pas d’accord avec ce que vous dites, mais je défendrai à la mort votre droit à le dire".

That's more likely how a French person would say it:)

Jerry sheer class, always dreamed of owning one very unlikely though.

I have heard one by far the best turntable ever produced its big and heavy I think 400kg and has a massive compressor but puts all decks to shame, I actually love the looks, very rare these days. Hi Nari,

I know where you're coming from, but I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the 'clear perspex'/skeletal look. I know some love it, though. Just not my thing!

Also, I dislike over-complication in design (the design of anything, not just turntables), simply for the sake of making something look 'expensive', or to justify a high price-tag. And for me, the 'La Luce', and other T/Ts like it, smack very much of that.

With T/Ts, I admire functional simplicity and solid (bombproof) engineering, above all else:)

What it looks like is purposeful, thus engineered to address/solve the issues required, to ensure the most accurate replay of vinyl, not some over-elaborate 'executive toy', like many high-end T/Ts, which look like they've been built from glorified Meccano sets!;)

I have heard one in a known system side by side a Rockport I like the continuum it had a sense of weight and scale that was amazing the Rockport seemed to extract even more and was rather breathtaking. The amg was the brain child Werner Roeschlau who previously manufactured turntables and components for other companies, most notably Brinkmann - which may explain why they look similar.

It is enough to see the shape of the Brinkman Balance or even more so Bardo to spot the similarities. Brinkmann’s Balance uses an external motor and control unit and the Bardo incorporates a 'magnetic direct drive' system, the AMG Viella integrates its belt motor into the main chassis. The main bearing is also different. The AMG table uses the hydromechanical characteristics of the lubricant to simplify its bearing design. I met Werner at a show once he was a delightful man with many great ideas sadly not around any more. The AMG turntables certainly delightful always liked them over Brinkman personally. Not very well represented in the UK sadly

I remember meeting its designer at that show think it was the Heathrow Penta show back then, and remember him telling me that the motor drive had something to do with Nasa he showed me pictures of the custom made drive system seen nothing like it. I phoned him a year ago and said if one was to be made today it would be in the region of £400000 or thereabouts so would not bother producing them again dont blame him, I could never afford one.

Nice turntable I never quite got on with the sound but very versatile, arm boards are quite simple on the AC3 nothing that a good machine shop could not knock up easily, I would be tempted to try other materials in any case. Sme wanted £1400 for a arm board fro my 30/12 so I could put the thales on it, it is a big bit of brass. I had one made quite easily

Yes, that's a very lovely thing, Neil.

Stylish/elegant, yet understated, but also 'purposeful' looking, and most importantly, superbly engineered. I hate superfluous frippery, on turntables, and anything that you can tell has been designed primarily to act as an ornament. One must remember a turntable's primary function, which isn't simply to be looked at and admired!;)

Nice, but I prefer the 'chunkier', more substantial, look of the Braun, which was posted earlier in the thread. The one above looks a wee bit too much like a Lenco, popped inside a Braun plinth. I preferred the tonearm on the other one, too.

The PS-500 looks like a cheaper model, although I could be wrong.

Yup, whilst I love both, I much prefer the more solid, 'industrial' look of the DPC55. I suspect it would also be the better sounding of the two. The arm on the DPC55, for me, also looks superior.

Yes, it’s a brute, but I love its sense of purposeful intent.

It's a PCS-5, no D :)

That is the earlier model from 1962. The PS-500 is a few years later from 1968. I think the difference in build just reflects changing styles and a move toward a more domestically acceptable unit. I agree the arm on the earlier deck is likely superior though not as capable of dealing with medium and high compliance cartridges which were becoming more mainstream at the time. At the end of the day they are both lovely decks, it's almost wrong to pick a favourite :)

Ah, that explains it then, and why I prefer the earlier model, as I'm more into the high-mass approach and something I can use with low-compliance cartridges. I suspect an SPU, for instance, would work superbly well on the PCS-5. "Domestically acceptable", for me, isn't a consideration;)

I agree, though, that both Brauns are lovely examples of turntable design:)

Yep - the PS-500 also has a 'hidden' but major asset lacking in the earlier model ... hydraulic suspension.
This makes for a complete lack of any of the microphonic problems associated with 'coupled' decks and arms.
Also provides a major Achilles heel - they can leak over time and fixing that is a huge undertaking :(

(also the bits of string tend to break)

Below is a pic of mine showing the suspension (1,2 and 3) and the bits of string:

The 'Bodge' is of interest to me. Mine makes a ton of static feedback noise and I'm pretty sure this is the cause. I unsoldered the old DIN connector and soldered a pair of phonos onto the connector board and reconnected it - cue the huge feedback. As far as I can work out I should maybe disconnect one of the 2 grounds as they are wired in common? Or not. What did you do to get yours working?

Sure, I can get that. Both are gorgeous, but with my particular (well-known) proclivities, you can see why I prefer the PCS-5:)

The fact that it's in a plinth that resembles 'Grey Hammertone', such as one of my other favourite T/Ts, harking from a similar era, also helps:

Now *that* certainly looks 'purposeful'!!

I will own one, in a suitable plinth, combined with an EMT 929 tonearm (to which I will fit an EMT JSD 5), as shown below, in the not too distant future.

I just like the understated, classic look of the Linns, I have a 1984 model with the fluted plinth, but this one built up by one of our members looks very tasty in particular

At the risk of upsetting a number of our members, but I'm not keen on the look of the Notts analogue decks. They just look like they sound dull/dead even though I know they don't and that they are indeed excellent decks. Just no sex appeal on my scale unfortunately

Not had any problems like that so no idea what might be causing it

On mine I removed the (non-original) connecting strip bodge that linked the 'old' grey wire to the 'new' blue one and made the connection directly to the tonearm wires in the tin box where the grey wire originated. Without looking again at the precise wiring I can't say for certain but from memory I simply replicated the solder connections used by the grey wire I removed. Looking at the wiring diagram in the PS 500 Manual it would seem that the two ground wires are linked in the box anyway.

If you want I can post the diagram into a separate thread ... ;)

Packed full of negative vibes for me, for some reason.

Interesting! I’ve never tried an L-07D and would like to add one to the collection. However a couple of people whose ears I trust have told me that whilst they thought it was very good, they didn’t think it was in the real top of the top class in sound terms. One chap who used to sell them told me not to bother, as he reckoned that the Sony PS-X9 I have would “wipe the floor with it!”. Still, horses for courses I suppose.

Going back to style, I tend to agree with those offering up the LP12. I’ve always though it had an understated and simple elegance to it.

Whils one of those big statements I can believe it. The PS-X9 is a serious professional standard broadcast deck that fetches BIG bucks. The L07d can be had for a lot less.

The Sony would likely make for an interesting comparison. However, "wipe the floor", I think not. Like most of these types of turntables, the motor units themselves are essentially 'neutral', thus pretty much devoid of character (because they're so well engineered), so what you're largely hearing is the sound of the arm and cartridge.

Therefore, what you'll get from an L-O7D will be rather dependent on which arm and cartridge is fitted. In that respect, the stock arm, whilst pretty good, can be bettered. The Trio does have an inherently 'cool' overall sonic signature, however, in the way of an SP10, which if partnered with the wrong arm or cartridge, can make it sound somewhat sterile.

I did like the L-O7D very much, but ultimately preferred my own modded Technics, as did the owner of the L-O7D(!) which I heard in the same system (Dandy's), along with the Nakamichi, who subsequently sold his Trio, the following week, and bought an Inspire Enigma...

I wouldn't go as far as "horrible", just a bit 'meh'... However, as you say, I suspect a nice oak would be better. Still wouldn't improve the look of the platter, though. I'm just not into clear acrylic or perspex on turntables.

I always feel these sort of threads have the potential to turn nasty when your pride & joy is dismissed by someone as a "kit of shit" or other unkind remark. Beauty is very subjective, every single person ever thinks they know style & class when they see it, yet a huge percentage of everyone else says/thinks they are wrong. Not everyone can be right, or wrong even, it is just the same thing seen through different eyes.

I am an ex graphic designer & now an artist so that probably explains where I am coming from, I don't think that just blurting out "I don't like that & that is my opinion" goes far enough, but if you can describe the reasons you don't like it then everyone learns something & it becomes positive not negative.

The thing to remember, Brook, is that it's only hi-fi. No-one's 'insulting' your mother;)

I couldn't give a monkey's what anyone thinks of my kit, or my opinion of what looks good, as long as *I* like it and it looks good to me! Plus, when you post pictures on a forum, of anything, you have to be prepared for others to comment, positively or negatively. Therefore, you can't afford to be 'precious'.

It's just the nature of the beast:)

Marco.

Hi Marco,

I think there is a lot to be said for how something is said as much as what is said.

When I posted a thread saying how much I love my new Clearaudio TT, I received positive comments (and a lot of help). You could easily have waded in saying it looks shit and potentially taken the shine off my joy (no one likes piss on their chips) and probably taken the thread in a negative direction. It was considerate that you didn't.

But in a thread about likes and dislikes of TT design, I'd be a bit thin skinned to take offence at your opinion of my beautiful TT :)

A bit of consideration goes a long way, everything in it's place, including "Kit of shit" :)

Cheers

Rich.

I 100% agree! Indeed, if I'd done that, it would've been tantamount to blatant thread-crapping, which we frown upon here. It's a different kettle of fish though, criticising stuff on a general thread like this:)

Sorry I don't like the look of your T/T, but many hate what I consider looks good, especially ancient and obsolete broadcast equipment, so don't take it to heart, mate!:D

There's an elegant simplicity to some of the Luxman turntables that I like a lot

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/141239120773-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

The Lux was one of my choices (to be precise the PD121 (for 12" arms) or the PD131 (for 9" arms)). :)

Referring back to the Braun TTs, whilst I admire their Bauhaus styling, I do prefer the look of TTs that have a shallow plinth, for example the Lux above, the Thorens 125 and the Linn LP12. Unfortunately shallow plinths means small motors, so one is largely obliged to consider DD.

Articulating why you like something is quite difficult, whether it is the visual arts, music, audio gear, clothing, styling of cars, or as we are discussing here, turntables.

As some would say: "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like". So to with the appearance of audio gear.

It also admits inconsistency - in my case I find the appearance of much of B&O gear beautiful for example, yet I'm attracted to the industrial/laboratory look of a lot of professional audio gear. Again some more inconsistency: I love the look of EMT gear, yet strongly dislike the look of QRK/Rusco/RekOKut designs.

So no accounting for taste.

I had to go back and check your first posting as I missed the Luxman amongst all the hideous clunkers that you also posted under your "ugly" heading (all of which I do agree with, mind). I have to say that the stretchy one is the worst looking Luxman tt I have ever seen. :D That vast expanse of bare top to accommodate the longer arm is ludicrous to my eye. Most 12 inch arm turntables strike me that way. I do understand the technical benefits of the longer arm, though.
I think we are just going to have to agree to differ on a lot of the aesthetic stuff, Barry. :)

A.f.a.I.k, the Raven only takes two, as does my Dais, though there are some decks which can accommodate more than two, as 'multiple' suggests (to me). If my experience with trying to set-up cart's properly on my rear arm is anything to go by, taking the alternative route of detachable head-shells seems tempting. Mind you, good eyesight would help ! Those underslung styli and another arm in the physical and visual way make for real p.i.t.a procedures..

Surely a high-end version of the Dansette style turnover cart. is long overdue.

Worry not, Paul! That looks stunning, and is one of the best implementations of housing a DP80 I've seen. A classic example of 'form follows function':)

Your plinth is beautifully finished, and subtly polished to show the lovely grain of the wood, unlike Jap 'faux rosewood'. That's falsely shiny, almost plastic looking, in a sickly 'baboon's arse' red, which combined with a blingy gold platter, for me is simply vomit-inducing!!

Can you tell I don't like it?:D:lol:

Yours sir, however, is class, and shows off the Denon impeccably!!

not wishing to detract from his lovely plinth but being an ex cabinet maker and antique restorer there is only 1 highly prized rosewood veneer and thats rio rosewood or brazilian rosewood, used mainly from about 1790,when its sanded is gives off a pleasant floral smell, hence the name rosewood.
stocks started to dwindle by the 60's and now under the CITES treaty it is banned, however subsitute rosewood timber and veneer is now in common use, just like mahogany that looks nothing like the mahogany you see on 18th century furniture.
behold the beauty!

Yup, it's been plonked on simply to make it look flashy and superficially more 'expensive' to tasteless 'key janglers':D

It's just a horrendous mismatch of clashing colours and finishes (gold platter, silver arm and shiny 'faux-rosewood' plinth), combined by someone who obviously should've stuck to engineering!

It probably offends my eyes so much because, due to my job, I'm used to combining different colours and finishes tastefully, and when it's done badly, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, I've always hated shiny wood-finishes, which for example, is why I never use gloss paint on doors, etc, around the house, and much prefer the satin/matt look:)

Plus, if I'm colouring or adding a shine to wood, I prefer to use (Liberon) wax, [see link below] not varnish. It always looks warmer and more natural.

Lol... Only teasing! But yes, you made the "pedestrian" remark on pfm, on the thread discussing the 'new Wigwam'. Something about you found things a little slower here and preferred the simplicity of having the bulk of the hi-fi chat all in the one section, as indeed is the case on pfm. Don't worry, no offence was taken!

I agree that that can superficially make things appear slower here, because we have rather more sub-sections, within which activity is spread around, especially if you fail to explore outside of our main area for audio, 'Blank Canvas'. However, quite often, as you've seen here, Analogue Art (or the digital section) can motor along rather quickly, when 'hot topics' are being discussed, such as now!;)

The trick with AoS is to get used to the layout, and the reasons why things were designed that way:)

Yes, that's true. It's a key rule of design, unless you're clever enough to know how to harmoniously combine bling and understated.

That's why, for example, when refurbishing and/or designing a house, if you want to make it look 'modern', then go all out and adopt the 'high-tech' minimalistic look [although that's not an excuse for creating an unimaginative 'white wonderland', or making rooms so empty, it looks like you've just been burgled!;)], not what's shown in your average DFS, and the same applies with 'traditional' or 'retro', which can easily stray into 'outdated and old-fashioned', if not done right.

I've seen some horrendous examples of both. You need to fundamentally understand the concepts concerned, before they can be successfully created and implemented!

Ah, relieved that my comment was purely observational (and was on the Wam thread !).

As someone, despite having an O level art, can't tell the difference between Rembrandt and Monet (I exaggerate for effect), I must admit to having had some artistic routing problems with the otherwise clever concept of AoS. The Japs do tend to like that kind of shiny 'rosewood' look, with gold. I've seen it often in their vintage gear. I seem to remember Pioneer doing an upmarket 'Reference' range of kit, in the early 90s, in a mirror-finished black with (unarguably immaculately) polished, faux rosewood side-cheeks, with gold trims. Perhaps you recall?

That look appears to epitomise 'Japanese chic', of a certain era. I sold some of the Pioneer stuff in question, when I worked for Bill Hutchinson, in Glasgow. And then of course there's the renowned (for all the right reasons) Pioneer Exclusive P3:

A phenomenally good turntable, but NOT in that bloody awful plinth!!:D

At least it hasn't got a gold platter....

I have a Graham Phantom on my SME Model 20, massive improvement in sound quality over the SME5 on the same motor unit. My understanding is Bob Graham developed the Phantom with the SME Model 30 in mind and while the Model 20 is no 30 I think it sounds most excellent with the Phantom in place.

I have Just purchased the Phantom Elite 12" its mounted on the Sme 30/12 for now, he developed the elite on the Techdas Airforce one the elite is quite a step forward over the Phantom 3 that I recently sold to a Sme 30/2 owner. I have owned a few phantoms over the years and had a few problems with build etc but still have a soft. The Series Kondo badged V-12 works well on the Micro Seiki I did try the Elite and like the V-12 on the micro. The thales simplicity 2 sounds great on the 30/12. My dealer had a plate made to try the fr66 fidelity research on the 30/12 and just did not work we tried a host of cartridges but sounds amazing on the micro. Bob graham used to own a 30/2 when Sumiko were the importers into the United States I owned a 30/2 graham phantom and prior to that a 2.2 so used to communicate with bob on a regular basis.

I'm essentially an analogue man, so now restrict myself so that I don't get lost. :)

Lol.... No worries. You may also find mileage in looking through Blank Canvas (for amps and speakers, etc) and Past Masters, if you're into vintage gear.

Much better, Geoff! Although the balance has strayed a little too far towards beige:eyebrows: Not sure what the wood finish is on that plinth, but it's a bit 'vanilla'. It'd have been nicer, IMO, in a traditional light oak or black ash:)

Marco.

It's just the lighting Marco. The TT base is actually white.

White? Lol... That makes it even worse! Who on earth would want a matt-white turntable plinth?

Piano white, *if* it's done professionally, to immaculate standards, can look rather striking, though! I like the design of the turntable, just not in that plinth:)

I was aware of the TechDas link with Bob Graham, my Phantom is a MK1 and no issues with its quality. Sadly the new arms are outside what I can afford to buy now, but I am very happy with my AMG Giro, so I think that's more than likely it now for me re vinyl replay - but never say never there are a few things I would like to try, Technics SP10 being one such.

I had a search for the above, and it was the gear in this range:

Not too unattractive in a cassette deck, but in a turntable plinth it's a different matter!:)

You can see, however, that the Japs have rather a fondness for that kind of look....

I came into the audio trade about the time many companies had that sort of look to their products and I must confess to having a soft spot for wood end cheeks.

Me too! My Sony X-777ES CDP has them, although they're in a matt-wood finish, not highly polished, as those above:)

However, for me, the same shiny 'faux rosewood' doesn't work as a turntable plinth.

Nice to see you posting more these days Mike :)

Thanks, Marco too for his plus point ! You were at AoS before even I was press-ganged into service. I'd no idea Daleks enjoyed such audio longevity !

Lol... Have always enjoyed your posts, Mike. I started posting on forums in 1999 (the old Naim one, when JV himself used to participate)... No wonder I sometimes get jaded!;)

Exactly!! Now, the styling of that T/T works and looks rather lovely... In fact, it's a beauty. I think the absence of gold bling makes a BIG difference!

Oh, and I bet it all sounds fab.
