I quite frequently feel the need to share something not worth starting a thread for but concider it at least vaguely worth pointing out... I'm going to use this thread to do just that, others are welcome to join me if they feel the need!

I shall start by telling you 'Withnail & I' is just starting on film four... If you haven't watched it, you need to, if you have... Well watch it again, you know how it makes you smile!

It was fascinating, especially the optical illusionary effects of dazzle camouflage - you can see it clearly by the naked eye, yet struggle to properly pinpoint the object properly and can have trouble working out which direction it is going in - truly bizarre.

Yep, an I got not the first idea weater or not any of that lot is true or just a loa of garbage, makes interesting reading though!
Oddly the first and last chapter of the book go into great detail about trying to prove the theory, but the middle is a lot more interesting... It's basically loads of accounts tales of things that supossedly can be proven by the theory, but is actualy just a load of storys of the supposedly true, no doubt vastly exagerated, "unknown". I read it at quite an impresionable time of my life, and although I do have a healthy skeptisim about most of it I think it is probably the cause of my open minded, not disbeliving stuff just coz it sounds a bit mad, leaveing what I don't know open to question atitude.... Well worth a read... Even if for most it will just make you chuckle!

Our dog is about the only dog in the world who doesn't much like water..
She never jumped in the canal when we live right by it, never jumped in the river, she wouldn't even go in a pond, infact she walks around puddles, no lie!
But like all dogs she does stink somtimes so she needs a wash..
Oddly she frequently goes and sits in the shower cubicle and looks at me expectantly, we have recently taken advantage of her doing this by getting in with her and giving her a shower. She sits there quietly whilst having her shower and doesn't even wag her tail when you say her name in a silly voice... But as soon as you open the door she goes completely insane leaping in the air like a nutter digging her way into the back of the arm chair, throwing towels round, lieing on the floor waving her legs about... Il film it next time, it's bloody hilarious ... Does anyone elses dog do such crazy things??

Yes mate, I meant to pm you actually... Not sure what the problem was but when I switched it back on again after I had mentioned the problem on here, it worked fine... It will remain a mystery I think, but I suspect I was being daft!

As for the lens, go in that site for me and vote for them to make one for Nikon! I have a 1.2 50mm, but I would def buy a 0.95 50mm if one was available, I love extreme low light photography with shallow depth of field - the results have such a other worldly feel to them!

On the subject of ultra fast lenses have a read of the article about kubrick's search for and use of 0.7 lenses to be used for shooting natural candel lit shots in clockwork orange... I heard recently that design and creative industrys are the uk's growing industrys, now making up 8% of it. Whether that means I'm in the right trade or not I don't know... I'd say it's worth looking into though, we have been lucky enough to get in with a another company that calls it's self a design agency although they do some design them selves they put a lot of stuff our way. I'm also lucky enough to work with a guy who is a genius when it comes to both design and programing and another genius at design leaving me with dubious pleasure of typing stuff which I think is pretty funny concidering my spelling and grammer skill - luckily by the time I get the copy to type up someone has dome that bit for me :). Basically what I'm saying is, get in with the right people and your on to winner! When dan gets good and we get bigger I'm hoping to put work his way - lazy bugger needs a job ;)

I've done all sorts mate, but never anything to do with computers unfortunately. But as Hamish will back me up on, I definitely know my way around em, and spend most of my life tinkering with them. I'm definitely a PC user, since you ask.
The course is pretty good. You can go at your own pace, (within reason, there are hand-in dates) it's not PC-centric at all, plenty of mac support I gather, there's a forum if you get stuck or have a question, and it's completely done from home over the internet, no tutorials or posting assignments in.



When dan gets good and we get bigger I'm hoping to put work his way - lazy bugger needs a job ;)

Yeah, really liked it, few bits missing and a few bits changed from the book, but nothing that too seriously jepodised the plot to my mind. I liked the ghosts, I could have watched more of them, was one of them Joe - as in Adam and joe??
I do think the book was better, but I can't think of many films I like more than the book (apart from shawshank of course)

My own opinion is *it is the thing to do*, especially when expressing an interest in an item listed in the for sales section. It lets people, the potential buyer and the seller know that things are happening for them, and also when others who are late have missed out. I think you know where I am coming from on this.

My own opinion on polite forum etiquette, nor necessarily the rest of the AoS management though. Sour grapes on my part ? Yes. There its off my chest.

im not sure this is trivial... certainly not to me! my Hannah has successfully returned to work this week after 15 months of depression related absence! unfortunately she was given the wrong type of pills by our local gp's which actually made it worse... after they gradually tripled the dosage of the tablets that were making it more worse the more she took them, it took her seeing a locum (the 4th doctor who had seen her) before the error was fixed ... a full 9 months after they had originally put her on them. she has since been put on the right tablets and with some help from various psychiatrists and councillors now almost has an accurate diagnosis and is on the right pills for her! ironically despite this fairly major nhs error, she does actually work at the hospital where her boss has kept her job for her the entire time she has been off and has been hugely supportive!
im very proud of my hannah this morning as she managed to get up at 5.45 after getting back from work at 9.45 last night ...i walked her to the bus stop this morning (frustratingly the stop closest to our old house) it was very nice walking along the canal listening to the dawn chorus with her - not something i have heard for quite a while... in fact i more often hear it on the way back from the pub!!

(Twice now my little 'un has been prescribed drugs or dosage that should only have been given to an adult, so whilst the NHS is rightly one of the "jewels in the crown" of this country, I can sympathise with the frustration when they get it wrong.) Having seen first hand people close to me go through depression I know what you will have experienced - often overlooked unless you've "been there, done that" (got the T-shirt.) Dalek Supreme (Dalek in a creamy sauce with bacon.)

Serves 4


Fry the onion and garlic together in olive oil until soft and golden. Remove from pan.
In same pan fry bacon until golden.Remove from pan.
Fry Dalek until cooked. Add the onion garlic and bacon to the Dalek. Mix together.
Add the stock liquid. Add the cream. Stir until coated. Heat until fully warmed through
Serve with white rice.

did anyone ever watch the program "balderdash and piffle" a superb bit of tv about etymology and people getting more words into the OED ... i love etymology (despite my poor spelling etc) ... the first xmas present hannah got me was a beautiful edition of nathan bailey's "an universal etymological english dictionary" it was rebound in the 30's but it is a 1773 edition with wonderful, in some places slightly singed (i like to think from reading in front of an open fire) pages... it makes me feel warm inside just touching it.... and then you open it and find such gems as:

Same here: SMB 310D was the registration number of my dad's first car. All I can remember of our current car's number is that it's got GOU in there somewhere.

Lego and mecano for example, ok they came in kits with instructions that gave you 4 or 5 options of things to build, but the fun was once you had built all the options, chucking all the bits into one of the three massive boxes full of Lego you had that you had collected and your brother before you and a couple of family friends and passed on to you... That way you could use your imagination and build everything from houses to space ships ... I even invented a boat once that had tubes either side with propeler as the front and back ... I remember telling my dad that the propeler at the back turned the one at the front which in turn powered the one at the back ... I told my dad, he looked at my quizically and explained that I had made something similar to the jet engine... Kudos to me I say, I was about 6!

Yeah it surprised me when I saw it as I expected it to be terrible but Black is really very good and it manages not to get too cornball at the end. I think they based it on that series where the bloke from Kiss went to an English public school and formed a punk rock band with some of the pupils. Don't remember the name of it.

I wonder if it's to do with dog food content? Our dogs are fed on proplan (bloody expensive concidering they eat if so quickly even if they were worried about the taste I can't see how they do taste it at the speed it goes in) even some of the poos they did in the yard over the winter that got left out there for a while whilst I coulndt be bothered to sweep them up didn't go White!

Concidentally we were discussing the dissapearance of 'WDS' (trademark pending) just the other day at work. The following theories were advanced:

1) Dog is sick or has worms and there are a lot less sick dogs about these days

2) Dog food is different nowadays

3) WDS is white because it has lain there long enough to be bleached by the sun but these days we do not get enough consecutive sunny, dry days for this to occur (cute this one as links Climate Change to the absence of WDS - didn't see that in the IPCC's 2000 page report...but they can have it for free for the next one:eyebrows:)

I've not long since returned from my Son's football presentation night, where he has been awarded "Most Improved Player 2009/2010 Season" in his team.

He is rightfully very proud of his achievement - I am also very proud of this award, as I am all too aware of the dedication and practise it has taken to get this far.

Supermarkets may aswell be a self service dead zone, i noticed a store in Sheffield that you go to checkouts put your credit card in & scan your own bar codes! Give me a corner shop & smal private butchers anyday.

Hannah has been telling me today that the Toryish government has started effecting the nhs already... She works in sergical day case ward where they have today been told they need to rearange the ward so as to ferther the segregation of women and men as well have forced pregancy checks on all women aged 12-55. I'm sure nurses etc will be happy to do more work to go with there pay freeze...

I work in the private sector for a profitable company - the sort of organization that generates the wealth (in tax) that enables an organization like the NHS to exist. I've not had a pay rise in three years either. And I don't know what a student nurse earns but I bet £10 that it's more than I do.

As far as compulsory pregnancy testing is concerned, I'm fairly certain that would be illegal. Maybe pregnancy would be detected anyway through the various tests that all hospital patients undergo?

Ali I couldn't agree more. the point I was making was that if we want happy, well paid nurses the money has to be made to pay them.

That was what annoyed me so much about the last government. Every speech was about how they were going to spend more money, nothing about how it was going to be generated in the first place. Any clueless idiot can spend money - but making it aint so easy. If you want world class hospitals and schools then first of all you need a world-class economy to pay for them.

About five years ago we had a spate of these bogus e-mails sent to us at work. Then, they all originated from Nigeria.

They were a bloody nuisance; given the classified nature of the work, we had to report each and every incidence to the SFO. Fortuately they soon stopped.

The sad thing is that some people fall for this scam; give over their bank details and are then surprised to find their accounts have been emptied. I notice that these e-mails from the Ivory Coast do not state the percentage cut offered for your 'assistance'.

My mate used to have the ability to use his arms..his bungalow was equiped with ultra low units etc so he could do things himself, now he's can't move at all i've refitted the kitchen to full size for his staff to use. It took him a good 3 hours to just wash the pots years ago, where it takes us 10 mins, putting them away in the plate rack would be a task & a half alone for him..We are so very lucky
