Do you know what really grinds my gears??
People call people by thier name in the accent of the country they come from... For eg when an english news reporter says fabio capello in an italien accent... Eeeeegh it makes me cringe!
Yer, that does my tits in too, especially when one has the right accent to carry it off properly!
But what rips my knitting even more, silly stilted accents aside, is professional BBC TV presenters, and such like, getting the pronunciation completely wrong of foreign words, instead of researching it properly first before they say it on air!!
The classics are usually during cookery programmes, where 'Bruschetta' (crusty Italian bread topped with fresh tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and fresh basil) is pronounced as 'Brushetta', instead of 'Bruskaetta', or 'Focaccia' (flat oven-baked Italian bread), as 'Focca-see-a' instead of 'Fo-ca-cha'!!
Ordinary people can of course be forgiven for such mistakes, but professional TV presenters should do their bloody research properly before they go on air!
[Rant over] :)
Marco.

My moby is 7 years old and still going strong. I used to sell them but when I left the industry I didn't want anything more to do with them so all this i-phone business has passed me by, except for when I saw the TV ad for the original i-phone and thought 'Christ they will sell a sh*tload of them':)

Waiting for 2 hours... I think I must have been hypnotised or something... This is the last iPhone I'm getting! I'm not doing this nonsence again ... Roll in the htc evo4 I say!

When 'someone else' has used the kettle and for no good reason has switched it off at the wall socket.
There you are - early morning got to get out to work and you fill the kettle and switch it on and go and shave and whatever and then you come back and pour cold water all over the tea bag so the whole thing is bolloxed and now there's no time left so you have to leave without a cup of tea and you are pissed off for the rest of the day.

You know what really Grinds my Gears
You get a new PC (for nothing admittedly - off a mate who is rich and binning it) and then when you try to plug in your active speakers there is no sound no matter which of the many holes you stuff the thingamajig into - so you call him and he says 'oh yeah it's got a soundcard so you will need to run an optical link into your AV amp and play back through that.' So you go looking for the half dozen or so optical leads that you KNOW you have somewhere but you don't find them although you do find the baseball cap you got awarded like 15 years ago when you were working in a call centre and you'd really rather forget that thanks all the same - so then you give up and think - 'bollox why do I need sound on the PC anyway' but then you realise 'oh yeah cause without it I can't hear the u=tube links on AOS...'
That's what really grinds my gears.

Limping is shit!!
I hurt my ankle today, not badly, I didn't feel it when I did it... It hurts no the less, and I have a compulsion to limp... But it doesn't hurt any less limping... I can make my self walk normally but it doesn't get worse... So why am I limping?
The Grand Wazoo
05-07-2010, 22:32
Put a pebble in your shoe Hamish, then you won't feel so guilty about limping!
I always thought a pebble in your shoe was the ultimate birth control - guaranteed to make you limp... (boom, boom )
The Red Arrows just flew over my house. Actually, I guess it wasn't deliberately arranged for them to fly over my house, it just happened to be underneath them as they passed by. Still, lovely to see them, whatever.
Put a pebble in your shoe Hamish, then you won't feel so guilty about limping!
Are you kidding, Chris?? He has enough trouble walking in his high-heels without that!!
Marco.
I don't want to add any more crap to your For Sale thread, so using this one instead - people, leave Hamish's FS thread for what it is, please! ;)
In the words of John Mason (Sean Connery) in The Rock (one of the best films ever, if you disagree, you're wrong...) "Personally, I think you're a fucking idiot" - but actually, who the heck are we to tell you what to do? And, most importantly, the pair of you are thinking of starting a family, which is the most rewarding thing in the world, but boy, if you think you need a holiday now, just you wait, sunny Jim! ;) All joking aside, though, [Dad mode on again!] cherish the time that you have with Hannah and spoil the hell out of her before you become a family - you will love it when a little Gill comes along, but it will change your lives forever, and it is important to appreciate and enjoy each other, which will get you through the sleepless nights, the frustrations and worries - all of which await you when you enter parenthood! [Dad mode off]
And anyway, the little blighters have far less chance of destroying the Adams than they do a valve amp, so best get shot quick! I'd have it in a heartbeat, but I'm a dad... :)

" Tell me lies tell me sweet little lies "
Went down to London this week to see an old pal who emigrated down there a couple of years back. After an extended pub crawl around some classic 'Boozers' in the town we went back to his local in Tulse Hill and met a couple of his drinking buddies.
Chatting to one of them turns out that many years ago he had done an MSc at the same University I attended (Keele). So making conversation I asked him where he had lived at the time. @
'In the flat over the curry house at the bottom of the bank' he says.
'Ah' says I, 'I know that flat - went there after the pub one night. I remember it well 'cause the bloke who lived there had some impressive concrete 'speakers.'
'Wait a minute' says he 'I had some concrete speakers when I lived there!'
So turns out we were there at the same time and knew each other quite well although we now (20 years on) both look very different to how we did then (no more long hair for one:).
He's still into his hi-fi and tells me he is now using arrays of Jordan drivers built into the ceiling corners of his living room, using the corner as a horn. Next time I'm down he's invited me round for a listen
A random meeting in a London pub - what are the odds, eh?

That's brilliant! I love it when things like that happen!
I always say though, life would be a lot more odd without coincidence!
Have you read the Jasper Fforde books about "Thursday Next" (that's the name of the protagonist) ... One of her enemies uses unlikely coincidence to do people harm. So her uncle mycroft ... Who happens to be dead, but it doesn't matter because he went rogue whilst working for the chronoguard (time travelers who make sure the time line is maintained) ... Builds her an entropy detector (he is also an inventor, and possibly the source of all life on earth) - it's basically a jar with 2 types of seeds in it... If she shakes the jar and the seeds become less mixed up and separate them selves into halves of the jar ... Then she knows her enemy is near by!
Good books, very amusing!
There is a cat called the 'Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat' because they moved the county boundaries. He is more commonly called 'The Cat formerly known as Cheshire'.
So yeah... Speakers in the ceiling with the room as a horn... Sounds unusual... But I guess if he had concrete speakers 20 years ago, he was on a path to unusual!

I guess it is even more odd when there is a 20 year gap and you only realise you have met before because of a pair of concrete speakers!

Balderdash? Piffle? This thread needs to be kept alive!
Thought you might like to read some of my favourite quotes from Vivian Stanshalls album 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End'
"I don't know what I want, but I want it NOW!"
"Mercifully, Henry hit him with the soft end of the pistol."
"God's turban & tutu, do I need a dare of the hog!"
"Like the shock of fondling a raw sausage, blindfold, at a gay party ..."
"Do you know what a palmist once said to me? She said: WILL YOU LET GO!"
"If I had all the money I've spent on drink.............. I'd spend it on drink."
"That was inedible muck, and there wasn't enough of it."
"A pale sun poked impudent marmalade fingers through the grizzled lattice glass, and sent the shadows scurrying, like convent girls menaced by a tramp."
............oh & this one:
"She noted that the gnomes were a length more obviously masculine than hitherto, and now knew why Gerald had squandered so much pocket-money on Plasticene".

Viv Stanshall was in the Bonzo Dog Band. He stood in for John Peel every now & then on the late Peel's late show & did parodies of Radio 4 drama programmes. The album is a rewrite of some of those sketches stitched together into an album full of wonderful English nonsense - thus fully qualified as first class B&P.

Very wise!
Hubert was unusual. In his adolescence, during the summer, in a northerly direction parallel to the Earthly axis, he would throw himself naked onto the lawn, and with that loathsome bluey Roman clock face tattooed about his private parts, think about Jean Harlow very hard, and from the shadow cast, tell the time with remarkable accuracy.
Our friends have just had a baby boy and named him Hubert. Don't think there is any connection (they're a Polish couple, I doubt they'd know Sir Henry) but it was coincidence enough for a post in B & P! :)
The Grand Wazoo
06-09-2010, 21:41
Well, there is the mention of a Polish person in Sir Henry:
Earth, having sipped its cold manna, merely "pssst... pssst..." and crisped beneath pom-toed fastidious feet. Worms and wigglies slumbered deep, and stirred not a bit, as didn't dead Mr. Cumberpatch who, like all Rawlinsons or favoured servants, was buried upright in the Victory Garden.
"No sense in wasting space", said Henry, "bags of calcium and goodness in the buggers. You should've seen my sprouts when Baron Tostoff, the ruined Pole, kicked it."
Interesting! I doubt there was any connection to Tostoff, though - I think it was a natural conception, no need for IVF and test-tubes to make baby Hubert as far as I know! One doesn't like to as such questions though, does one?

A google whack is 2 words recognised by google as being in the English dictionary (underlined in the top right corner - although that doesn't seem to happen on a iPhone) that between them find one result .... Loads of fun, but very frustrating when you get down to 2 or 3

'Good evening shopkeep! Might I be so bold as to make enquiries as to if, in the event that I decide to purchase some of these marvellous comestibles from your esteemed establishment, it might be both possible and permissable to pay for same via the use of my Visa Debit facility?'

Have you ever come across such a purposeless, waste of syllables, bollocksful, mind-numbingly stupid phrase as 'in store'?
http://www.laura-ashley.com.au/resources/internal/file_views/1295/1_instoreLIGHTINGTOWELS.jpg
For crying out loud.......I almost never see a sentence with that in it that could convey its meaning without the phrase!
You see it on a sign outside a shop. It tells you that the thing they're selling in the shop is..............wait for it............in the shop!!
It's much, much worse when it's one word - 'instore'.

Agreed! I think I've been in this situation for at least twenty years. A mixture of inertia, having initially chosen well, and not willing to spend large amounts of money to make any serious up-grades.
May sound smug - but I really am 'at peace' with my system, for all it's shortcomings. It now allows me to enjoy my record collection, rather than worrying about improvements. But that's not to say I'm not interested in the latest components and I still like to 'tinker' with cartridges.

Salt & Vinager pots..how come only us blokes re-fill em up?
Exactly 2 months & 2 Days from the above, guess what! I Had to fill the salt pot up again. :(
I suppose it's like myself that has absolutly no intentions in doing any Ironing of cloths, i'll put a straight out of the wash creased 'T' shirt on before even dream of an Iron. I'm one of those super stringent house cleaner uppers & cheif cook 'n' pot washers, but Ironings a no no :)
I suppose i just better get used to a life of Salt & vinager pot filling
The only chore I LIKE doing is the ironing, because the rule is that I wear headphones and listen to music whilst doing it, whilst Sue watches Eastnation Streetadale or whatever the cr@p is!
I'm left handed and got out of doing any ironing for over 10 years after moving in with 'er indoors by telling her I needed a left handed ironing board, unfortunately she eventually mentioned this to someone at work...been in the doghouse ever since......

OK, so here's some balderdash & piffle.
What I am about to disclose is something that probably no-one else on God's great Earth knows other than me. And now, I'm going to let you all into my secret.
On the title track of Al Stewart's album, 'Year of the Cat' (vinyl copy), during the 6th verse where the lyrics go:
Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
......the words "and lost your ticket" last for exactly and precisely one revolution of the record.
So there you go. You are now the privileged custodian of that vitally important piece of information - treat it with the respect it deserves.
I feel honoured and privileged that you decided to share that with us Chris. I hope you feel cleansed now that you have got that off your chest.

Abso-bleedin-lutely, I've been keeping that to myself since I was about 16 years old. It felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders!
I became aware of this mind numbing fact when my sister's copy of the album acquired a certain extra element in its grooves (known to those in the inner circle as 'a bit of shite') that made the stylus jump just at the crucial point of the lyric - after the word ticket. It created a locked groove and good old Al was heard to repeat himself ad infinitum. The weird thing was that there wasn't click or bang through the speakers, just yer man wibbling away to himself about how his lady had lost her ticket.
I now own that album & after the jolly old Moth RCM got set to work, the end of the song was soon restored to its full glory!
I found an album recently where the run-out groove repeated itself (a bass-guitar riff, if I remember rightly) ad infinitum, but I can't remember what album or artist it was. Which must qualify me for nomination for "most useless post of the day" even though the day is only 38 minutes long...

Reminds me of the dripping tap at the end of 'Alans Psychedelic Breakfast', last track, and therefore a locked (LP) groove, on Side 2 of Pink Floyd's 'Atom Heart Mother' (at 5:08 in part 2)

Long in the tooth
Meaning:
Old, especially of horses or people.
Origin:
Horses's teeth, unlike humans', continue to grow with age. They also wear down with use, but the changes in the characteristics of the teeth over time make it possible to make a rough estimate of a horse's age by examining them.
So, Andre, when your seller says that, what he really means is that if you look inside, you'll see it's ready for the knacker's yard

Factually what you say is correct, however, in the context of what Andre is referring to, I'd say it's more likely to mean 'old fashioned' or 'past its best', than knackered.
Of course, one man's 'old fashioned' is another's 'audio nirvana', especially the way the best vintage equipment is often voiced compared to its modern counterparts ;)

You know I have plenty of time for old gear - I took this to be the Ebay seller's version of Estate Agent-speak. You know the kind of thing, where phrases like:
"Internal Viewing Recommended" really means Looks like a bombsite on the outside.
or
"Studio" means you can wash the dishes, watch the telly, and answer the front door all at the same time without getting up from the toilet.
"A range of kitchen cupboards" means every single one is of a different style and they range from dirty to hanging off.
"Colourful history" means the house has witnessed unspeakable acts of violence leading to the permanent and terrifying haunting by a wide range of headless ghouls.

Not sure if this is the best place to post this or not, but here goes. Living in Ipswich, Suffolk, I think we are under a flightpath towards/from what I guess is Stansted, though it could equally be Luton, Heathrow or even Gatwick, or maybe all or some of the above. Anyway, the point is that I am well used to seeing commercial planes flying over at night, and am aware that they always have a flashing "strobe" light to them as I trace them across the night sky. Just seen three in a row, and I am sure you've all seen the same. Sometimes we have the police helicopter out (this is Ipswich!) and that is very identifiable - noisy, slow, searchlight often.
Well last night my missus and I were in the garden around 9.30 I guess, and she said "what's that?" - and we watched a very bright orange light move much quicker than normal across the sky, in a similar direction to normal, but at a much faster speed. It was a constant speed, in a flat trajectory, and the orange light (a globe of light) was at a constant brightness, with no flickering or strobing at all. It didn't do anything peculiar like stop or suddenly speed off, but it was probably faster than a commercial flight by 2 times.
Any ideas? My only thought was that it was a fighter jet (British or Amercian) and the constant orange glow was the afterburners, but I would have expected to see some variance in the brightness or intesity, and there was certainly no noise which again I would have expected. It was a UFO buy definition, but I don't for one minute believe it was aliens - it definitely wasn't a meteor or shooting star because it travelled just like an aircraft, in a linear manner, at the "right" height, just much faster, and with the orange glowing light...?

Actually, it's two bits of frippery & nonsense:
I once saw a kids toy in a shop window in Brighton.

You've got to love the flavour of a good T-bone.
Sometimes I think we in the UK have forgotten about the flavour of a good steak and that nowadays, tenderness is the only measure by which one is judged.
Fat & bones are the things that give meat real flavour......& I'll take that over 'melt in the mouth' any day.
Nice one, Hamish - hope you enjoyed it :)
I completely agree, Chris. The only thing that fillet is good for is Beef Wellington or Tournedos Rossini, otherwise I'm a ribeye (or T-bone) man. Sirloin is sometimes ok, too. All beef, however, must have a nice 'marbling' of fat running through it to ensure that there's flavour when cooked.
But whatever it is, it has to be hung and matured, and bought from a proper butcher - none of yer day glow-dyed red coloured tasteless cardboard posing as meat (clueless numpties think that this is an indicator of quality ) that most supermarkets sell! :spew:

Having 2 whippets means that a leaded walk just won't do anything... They are actually pretty lazy dogs considering they are known for speed ... But they do need a good run once a day at least ...
They are also very friendly ... Or at least our 2 are...
Anytime they meet anothe dog they bound over and say hello ... It's always fine as long ad the owner of the other dog react correctly.
There is a chap who walks his dog in the same park as me, ours go off the lead as soon as we get to the park and he seems to do the same ... The problem is that because are so fast it makes other people a little nervous if they run in thier direction... I understand that, but this one other dog owner, a chap about my age panics and picks his dog off the floor and shouts at me to restrain my animals ...
In my books there is no excuse for owning a dog and not knowing that that sort of behaviour instills fear into a dog ...
Imagine having a baby and instilling a fear of all other humans in it ... It would be boarder line abuse ...
I have met 2 people who have reacted like that to our dogs ... With every other dog/owner that they meet, ours are very well behaved, playful at worst ... So I'm sure ours arent in the wrong ... So what's wrong with these 2 owners .... How do they manage to get away with being so lacking of understanding of dog behavior

3. I need to get out more!

Don't worry mate - years ago a good friend & I sat up late talking about this stuff & he said to me that his wife wanted kids but he didn't think that the time was right.
I told him that there's never a right time to have kids as you can always find a reason not to have them. But you look for those reasons because becoming a parent seems to be the biggest watershed in your life & you're afraid to move into it.
It's happened to everyone who ever became a parent since year dot.
To shit yerself about it is normal..........it's part of what makes it so fantastic when they arrive!

Cheers Chris, I'm sure I'll be fine, just going through the motions I think ... ... ...
It's funny, one of my good mates has just had a kid ... Literally about a week ago!
He was shitting him self loads more than me - he hasn't been with his lady as long as me an Hannah have been together and started doubting all sorts of things ... He hit the booze and the rest and spent the last six months coming out drinking with me and Hannah quite a lot... We spent much of the time counciling him and talking him through most of his emotions ...
Now obviolusly I'm yet to experience a pregnancy longer than I currently have, so I'm no expert on these matters, but talking someone through the situation, especially considering someone who has viewed the situation often quite negatively has proved quite cathartic ... Whatever I feel now, I just feel "well at least i don't feel how he did"...
Thankfully he has now had his daughter and now says things like "it's the best feeling ever" and "those first few moments with her have changed my life" ... All stuff that we told him would happen of course!
It supprises me how little emotional intelegency people have ... I have a bloody good idea that A: it's going to be absolutely amazing ... And B: I currently have no idea of just how amazing it is going to be!! ...
It's quite funny actually, I'm reading a book about pregnancy designed for men ... There are loads of comments from men about there emotional responses ... They most as well just be stuff I have written for the most part ... ... At least I'm normal I guess :)

Blimey ...
Congrats Hamish and your good lady, i shit myself whan we found out as well, it was more the fact of telling our parents, we were due to get wed in August of the following year which worked out the same month as our first (Aime'e) was due, so the wedding was brought forward to FEB with the wedding dress being let out to fit nearer the time, we went on and had another three as well all within 5 years, there are all very close to each other and we enjoy being a big family, the money dosn't come in to it you just cope, a bit of a downer is that Aime'e is allergic to peanuts which has been a major issue over the years and still is, she's 19 now and we still worry all the time when she is out and about, all part of being a parent though,
Best wishes for you, Hannah and the shrimp for the future

That's why I live alone! Lots of women never seem to be able to settle they have to be constantly pottering around all day until finally they go in the bath or something and you can get an hour's peace.
It's all about our prehistoric ancestors IMHO - the blokes had to go out on the hunt 2-3 days at a time - high intensity activity - so when they came back they sat about doing nothing and conserving energy for the next hunt. The women stayed back at the cave looking after the fire and the kids so were adapted to continuous low intensity work. That's my theory anyway:)

O yeh i came to the realisation years ago that you can't have an hobby like this unless you live alone.
Actually did live with a girl for almost 5 years with no problem on that front at all, she liked music and would sit and listen with me or make herself scarce if she thought I wanted a bit of time alone...damned if I know now why I finished it with her....
No probs with hoovering or washing or general pottering about either! In fact she wouldn't do any house work at all. Something to do with feminism I think...

Think about this for a minute:
We've just entered a new decade - this is something that we all agree on, is it not?
I spent the latter half of 1999 telling people that the New Year would not see in a new millennium and they all told me I was wrong. The rest of the world, driven on by the media celebrated a new millennium and a good time was had by all.
So, it's official then - a decade is eleven years.
