Most of us like to see what others are using. So show us your speakers. Just tell us what they are and add a photo :).
These are my main speakers. Tannoy Cheviot Mk.II. And they sound gorgeous! :D

I posted a pic of the Tannoys, so I guess I'd better show the KEF Corellis too. This is before restoration. They had a few marks at the time.

Unfortunately, the large ones with the 10" woofers didn't make It past prototype stage. I just didn't like the sound of the metal coned woofers (lacked depth and sounded grey or dull in the lower mids), so replaced them with a much better sounding, single, 10" carbon/paper woofer.

Yes that's right Geoff but when it's made by a manufacturer you have previously rubbished it's quite a thing to reveal... I am so surprised to be honest... the toons are still on via the Naim and I'm loving it more the more I have it on.... I could listen to this for hours on end, it's that good.... and a complete bargain compared to the rest of the sytem ;)

Not great photos, and not in place being used.
I have more of my FPS plane wave and subs, rather than a corner of one next to the Chario speakers ( same as Jerry).but on the other laptop, and not good as photos taken show me reflected in my pants, so better not post those...
Duevel planets, and KEF ref 1. Duevel used in second system, KEF back in the cupboard with many other sets of speakers.

They really are immaculate inside, the wadding is still pure white like new. Only thing I have done is update the electrolytic caps and put some decent binding posts on the back. They still seems to be improving with every change/upgrade I make elsewhere, so I'm going to see how long I can resist replacing them. God only knows where I'm going to put them as I promised their original owner that I would care for them til their end of days!

Is that one of your old systems, situated in your current house, Jerry? Looks very different from the norm! :)
Firstly, the decor is quite different from your usual 'look', and secondly, the system appears properly set up on specialist stands, with the equipment (dusted) and neatly spaced out [rather than stacked up dusty, all higgledy-piggledy], cables neatly dressed, and no big fugly TV sat in the way!
Is that when you used to know what you were doing? :ner::D

Ha - I *knew* that wasn't your usual pad! It looks rather like a system set up in a dealer's demo room :)
But it's fairly 'textbook' for how a system should be set up, if you want to do the job properly... It's the ducks, though, that make it all sound good, so that's ultimately what's missing! :D

My Goodmans Magisters. Obviously not original. I've changed the mids and tweeters, re-capped, put an inductor on the bass and put a new baffle on top of the old one to bring the drivers in front of the 'picture frame' surround. I have to say they sound fabulous to me.
They look like they can do the business.

I drove over 500 miles to collect them.
Boy was I disappointed when I got them home!
I sold them on immediately.
Soft focus, rolled off treble, pretty much exactly the type of sound I don't like.
I can't recall what amps I had at the time, although I can see a 30wpc el34 amp in the background! I'm sure that I had others as well.

Interesting Jerry, thanks for the reply. I see they are on the Series 3 now, not sure what changes have been made. In talking with the US distributor, the tend to like using solid state to drive them even though they have a couple other tube amplifier options in their stable of gear. If I get another chance at some point, I will probably try to get my ears on them.
By the way, you certainly have had a lot of good and interesting speakers in your home! Nice to be able to listen to so many things within your own home and systems! Thanks for sharing!

Magneplanar MG2.5r actives with oak frames use Linkwitz bass units to provide added weight to the bass which also frees up the bass/midrange panel. They fold flat against the side walls and swing out when I want to use them. LX521s have superior pinpoint imaging and are the speakers I use the most, but the Maggies have a grand sense of scale that is immersive with well recorded live rock albums. The 42inch ribbon crosses over at 1kHz.

Why did I know you were going to say that?
The Proacs interest me. I know they have a lot of dedicated followers but I've only ever heard one pair, little stand mounters; they were very impressive. Clean, with lots of 'sparkle'
I love 'em.
With the two larger drivers there's plenty of Bass but it's not over blown. Being bottom ported this can also be adjusted by raising or lowering on the spikes to your 'taste'.
The Treble on these I wouldn't say was 'sparkly'. Very 'weighty', a cymbal sounds like a cymbal ! But they can be beautifull, light and airy when the content calls for it.
All round a lovely speaker, shame they've now discontinued them and don't offer anything quite like them. Lots of interesting speakers but nothing really to replace the 148's.

@Anthony - I think the best (i.e. those I liked best) conventional cone&dome-in-a-box speakers were the Leema Xavier.
If I had to settle down with a conventional speaker it would be those.
My main speakers in use, KEF K160s. These are not the best speakers I have but fit the space and were the first speakers I bought over a year ago when I got back into hifi.

Thanks. Yes, some thought (and diplomatic effort) went into the finish. Sides and tops are sprayed. The fronts I covered in felt - mainly because I think it helps the sound when the front panel is so expansive, but also, the felt happens to give quite a nice visual effect too.
And be assured, the angle of the photo means that it's not quite possible to see the nails that are pinning down the items to the mantle. ;-)
Some KEF C25s on the left and black ash KEF Coda iiis on the right. I also have another set of the earlier brown walnut veneer Coda iiis too.

Thanks Grant, they are big, at 200lbs each, and over 5ft tall. I was on the verge of selling them for years, until I got that 300watt Krell. That woke them up! When I first bought them they were in a much smaller room, but I built a 16ft by 20ft building to house them in! They are none too small. True full range speakers.

I can't remember which thread I mentioned this in a week or two ago... but I'm always surprised at the lack of interest in the old white front Mission 770's... The 770 Freedom is very good as well, though very different to the white front ones in presentation.
The 770 was regarded as a giant killer in its day, and that was at a not inconsiderable in 1980 price of £379. I used a pair as my main speakers for about ten years.. a long time ago.. I should fit some tweeters and try them again some day:) They were great with an MF A370 power amp.

Couldn't agree more. We need a huge lazy susan to rotate between us each of the great and different experiences on offer here! :-)
Alternatively, you might have seen the Rockin'1000 Smells Like Teen Spirit extravaganza... Maybe we could hire some football stadium, hook up all of our 1000 amps and pairs of speakers to a single source and see how that sounds... :-D

This seems an appropriate place to quote the great Hunter S Thompson's experience:
'One of the bass speaker boxes is starting to emit smoke ... or maybe that acrid-smelling blue haze is coming from one of the Universal 3-Way Dividing Network boxes.
But to hell with the smoke; the first time this happened, I panicked and took down the whole system - but when I took the back off the speaker box I realised it was only the insulation burning, which is not a serious matter when you have 80 speakers in one room. According to the human cinder who built this system then left town without leaving a schematic to show me how to put it back together in case a drug addict fell into the wiring, I can afford to sacrifice at least ten speakers to fire and smoke without any serious fall-off in sound quality. The break-point, he says, would be somewhere between 15-20. At that point - with 15 or 20 speakers burned into cinders disappearing one after another in balls of blue smoke - I would start getting some fuzz on the low end, and also a loss in clarity.'

Nice speakers, Jules, beautifully built and highly rated, too! :)
However, that's one of the issues with the modern fashion of designing floor-standing speakers with slim baffles, in an attempt to appear as 'room friendly', to pander to WAF... Remove those side-firing bass drivers and put them on the front of the speakers instead, with suitably wide baffles, and I suspect that would cure much of the problem! ;)

Hmm.
Maybe.
I had Virgo 2 for quite a while and loved them.
They did something very special with imaging (when given the space they wanted!) and I do wonder if that had something to do with the narrow front baffle.
I'm pretty sure of it, Jerry! I completely agree with you about the imaging, as that's one of the things the Virgo's excel at, but for me, side-firing bass drivers on floor-standing speakers, in most modern rooms, is a flawed concept.

I've got them in a bay, I find toeing them in gives the bass a longer apparent path to the walls and works well, but of course the width of the stage contracts a little. As I listen almost nearfield this isn't a problem. So basically I think they are more flexible than might be thought. After all some speakers have a bass cone that fires down into the floor and this is by design.

Interesting that the co-founder of Audio Physic, Joachim Gerhard, left the company as he was unhappy about its direction - he now has a new company that sells speakers, amps and cartridges -

These are possibly the best speakers I have ever heard. Certainly the best for soundstaging, so good compared to anything else it just isn't funny. I think you can build them for a couple of grand if you have the skills and the tools. Designed for active operation though.
Yup, that's interesting, but I should stress the point I was making was not that side-firing drivers are a flawed design, per se, but simply in most modern rooms, particularly when you're not listening near-field.
They're just not easy to get to work right.
Love or loathe big Tannoys, for example [down Jerry:D], they're amongst the easiest speakers to get to work in a room I've ever used, despite their significant size - and I suspect that the large single-driver/wide baffle arrangement, and how they're ported, is a big part of that.
Marco.

Marco.Anything that doesn't fire directly at you is dodgy and/or suspect.
Some speakers can just about get away with it and Jerry's MBLs do but the trade off for Jerry is near field listening as he places them against the long wall to make it work.
It does work bloody well though. At least I think so.
Yes, I enjoyed Jerry's system very much when I heard it. I didn't want to say at the time though, that his T/T sounded crap in comparison with his digital front end, but I believe he's 'sorted' that now!;)

Dispersion patterns at bass frequencies are virtually omnidirectional, so the orientation of the driver is less critical. Also, even if side or even rear facing, the bass driver is not far enough away from other drivers to make much phase difference, due to the long (many feet) wavelengths at low frequencies.

That's true If the bass driver Is crossed very low and with a steep slope. The last 3-way I built crossed at 320hz, 2nd order, and I was getting output up to 1000hz.
My setup with Jordan Eikona 2 VTLs and CXA60 (edit: photo taken when I was using Yamaha AS501, since upgraded) Original VTL design has rectangular feet but in the interest of extra stability and aesthetics I made up some circular ones, which I think look better. Cabinets built by BK Electronics but the paint job was all my own work :)
