think if your sharing a livingroom and shes not "that" into music then this is a major issue. BUT, its the duty of both to compomise

Yup, that's it in a nutshell. And if one or the other isn't willing to do that, then it's never going to work, as BOTH parties need to be HAPPY with the arrangement.

Well maybe I've been unlucky with women...

Nope, it's probably more that we've been lucky, or rather refused to settle for anything less, as many women are exactly as you describe. Why share your life with someone who's intent on changing you, simply to pacify her needs?

I just can't get why anyone, man or women, would tolerate being controlled like that, and merely being USED as a pawn for increasing their partner's self-worth...

I have actively encouraged my wife to come to audition kit and get involved in the whole process.
When i go to pick kit up at fellow enthusiast's homes i get the feeling they are always a little surprised to see my wife with me!
They don't say that of course but it's a feeling. To be fair her ears are just as good if not better and she always tells me without emotional connection to kit what she thinks, which helps!
From what I remember she was a little reluctant to be involved initially but she has really enjoyed the journey and it always amazes her that
the sound evolves and actually gets 'better'. So i have involved her and the kit is now not a problem.

I think ultimately you have to recognise what makes each there happy in a relationship and if t's not destructive, embrace it for each other.
We happen to like the kit in the living room far more than a 70 inch T.V, which i personally can't see the point in, but whatever floats your boat.
To be honest she did give me 'The Look' when I once looked at the TVOTT Altec A7 Horn set up on the tinternet...

I drew the line at both Tannoy 215 and then Westlakes(god loves a trier though!) they were just too big. Even where folk use standmounts I often find the system support paraphenalia more objectionable tbh and I've switched to an oak unit more akin to room furniture. CD's are now stored in the loft as is most of my vinyl.

Other than cabinet coloration with a big cabinet, which requires a lot of treatment, I have never understood a preference for standmounters over floorstanders.

They effectively take up the same space, they have less bass extension, they require stands which can be very expensive and sometimes ring, and they are also often unstable and a threat to children, with the potential for the speaker to be knocked off.

I've noticed some people seem to equate stand mounts with being fast and agile and floorstanders slow and ploddy. And they tend to assume the floorstander will automatically have deeper bass too. Whereas none of these things are connected to the floor/stand thing in any way.

06-11-2017, 18:20
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. You will get more scale with floorstanders, in general, but you will also have more box colouration and diffraction effects with floorstanders, in general. This is why people say that standmounts can image or ‘disappear’ better than floorstanders.

...tell that to Thiel or Avalon though. [emoji6]

Also, I have had two pairs of speakers now, Amphion Argon and Royd RR3, which behind a curtain you would swear are floorstanders. In comparison my Royd Sorcerers are definitely lacking at the low bass end i.e. sound like a mini monitor.

Oh yeah I forgot that one about the imaging. There are about 100 things that affect imaging and about 5 of them are to do with the speaker. Okay that may be an exaggeration but even assuming the room and positioning don't swamp everything else, every bit of the system will have some effect on the imaging ability. No-one ever deliberately designed speakers to image badly, after all*

Ah yes, the (literal) “wall of sound” presentation. I think the Bose 901 can qualify here too. Not deliberately imaging badly, just not seeing it as any sort of priority.

Interesting that Tannoy now have the Legacy series with its more 'neutral' version of retro styling, and of course something like the DC10A follows the classic dual concentric approach, while being thoroughly modern and glossy. Love the Prestige stuff though.

Don't often dip in as I don't really do hi-fi any more, what with the non working ears and lack of time and preparations for moving back to the UK etc. However, the idea of seeing the back of speakers rather appeals so here are two sets of Teufels that I made!!

Hi Marco and Geoff,

Although I don't do hi-fi now, I still do music. Probably more now as I don't worry too much about the gear. Sennheisers and Rogers Ravensbrook with the Mac does me fine.

We are trying to finish the house as after ten years here we are getting itchy feet and wan't to make what will undoubtedly be the last move afore we go! Scotland beckons. We need a slot racing club for me and a lawn bowls club for Ronnie so Dundee or Inverness seems the choice. I would prefer the West Coast but the clubs will be our main social life I suspect as we don't wan't to live too close to a town, being country folk.

Not much looking forward to the NHS after here but one can't have everything. Some scenery will be welcome as it's all a bit flat round here much as it's lovely.

So when I do use the speakers, the hills will be alive with the sound etc........

Keep us informed Gordon. What's your timetable for relocating (again :))?

Timetable is 'flexible'...... it very much depends on the sale of this place and France doesn't do rapid house sales like the UK. We are sort of hoping for the spring. We can say with Ronnie's brother and then go house hunting from Gloucestershire. Much easier than from here. We may even do a self build if we can get a decent size plot. Fruit and veg from the garden is a must, even more so if I remember correctly what UK supermarkets offer.

Being out here has paid off as it has meant building a reasonable pot of dosh for house purchase and the mortgage will be cleared next May. The price of choosing the wrong previous partner for both of us.

We have lived in interesting times.

Hi Neil, there was a thread I posted about them as they had a problem when I got them but I can't find it by searching. The voice coils were rubbing, but they are a very unconventional design. The bass unit has no conventional surround the rubber has been removed and the cone bonded to the planar panel. I suppose it give the 10" unit a much larger area to radiate. However, I think the design was flawed in that the planar panel is only secured at the four corners. To fix the rubbing coils I had to make wedges to place around the perimeter of the panel and this effected a cure...sort of, later on I had to add more as some strange buzzing noises started.

There is very little info on the net about these. All I could find from EAR is a show report from the US where they were demonstrated. Tim De Paravicini is said to have designed them, but he did not make them. I emailed him and he gave the info as to who had made them, but I didn't get any further. There were two sizes going to be available. I don't know if mine are the smaller or larger of the two. They were to have retailed around the £5,000 mark, but I have never seen anything to suggest that they were in fact ever sold.

Here is a vid I posted some time ago.

Good point!

I was always impressed by the “clock works”, on old victrola’s, that kept the speed fairly steady on 78’s, with the crank sticking out the side, wind it up and go, in fact it worked extremely well for a completely mechanical device.

Russel, I am an unapologetic Omni-speaker kind of guy, and these are simply wonderful n my room. These are very open, detailed, and have very decent bass response for a relatively smallish cabinet. Not having to sit in a sweet spot to enjoy what they offer is also a good thing in my book.

I enjoy all types of speakers, but when it comes to ones I own and enjoy the most, the Omni seems to work so well in my room that I haven't seriously considered anything else.

They do seem to solve many placement problems. And should have a great soundstage? Many years ago I had a pair of Bose omnidirectional speakers, nowhere near as nice as yours, but I did enjoy their room filling sound.

Russell

Frazeur1
04-07-2018, 12:27
While they do solve some placement problems, they still require a bit of playing around with positioning like any speaker does. But once you find the location that gives an even balance, sit back and enjoy.

Some omnis can give a sense of overblown staging, pianos and vocalists mouths that seem larger than life. So far no such issues with these. Again, some of those issues can be due to positioning. The Venus do put up a very nicely detailed, musical stage.

Many years ago I dabbled with some smaller Bose, the 301. Kind of a wooly sound to it, but certainly it could sound very wide as to staging ability.

Happy July 4th too, Russel!

Yes I had a pair of Bose 601 Model III. With my Adcom 555 amp, which everyone said was too big, they sounded surprisingly good. Compared to the Vandersteen’s I replaced them with, they were not all that outclassed. The treble was much smoother with the Vandee’s, but the time I lived with the 601’s I was happy. Much as you describe your Omni’s about placement. I recently, (in the past three years), restored the 601’s with some much better speaker elements and sold them to a friend, who is still very happy with them.

Your refurbished 601’s look nice Russel!

Thanks!
I put some Nice Goldwood speakers in, that closely matched the original specs, and are synthetic cones with rubber surrounds. And I put sealer on the tweeters, as it was near impossible to find replacements. The original crossover was nothing but a single cap! So, I put a real crossover in, and replaced the cheap terminal plate with a larger one with gold 5 way posts. And I restuffed them with poly. They sounded pretty amazing, the cabinets were fairly well made.

The original woofers dry rotted, and one a mouse chewed a hole in it! While I was using them! Just like a cartoon.

Only got them yesterday Martin, was blown away when I first listened to them but not so much today (you know how it is ). The powered woofers are a neat idea, linked to the crossover but variable, don't think I've got that quite right yet. However it was good to go back to my faithful old Tannoys, they seem to have more 'gravitas'. So I was trying to decide between amps now I've got another set of speakers in the mix.

I do Roy, I do.

There's not much can touch a big Tannoy for gravitas though is there? They are playing in a whole different gravitas league.

I suspect getting the subs tuned in just right will make a big difference to the whole sound. Hours of tinkering-related fun ahead!

The Goldenears do the likes of David Guetta, Scooter & Gorgon City (some guilty pleasures...) really well but I don't always listen to them. Anyway got all the speakers plumbed in via the 2 sets of monoblocks & the 2 sets of balanced outs on my pre so I can have a wall of sound now :eyebrows:

That looks familiar David ? . Yes having heard my A/I 500 series amp/ border patrol p/ supply upgraded by the man himself driving the Troels
earlier this week I can only concur how wonderful the speakers sounded. And what made me laugh was being first and foremost a workshop there s
plenty of clutter around as you can see in front of the speakers !. However the system played music as the football commentators sometimes say with a
smile on its face it seemed. Truly superb.

A bigger house more to the point, but it's not going to happen! :) The lounge roof tho will be extended upwards, in a vaulted gable, partially because the current flat roof is starting to leak, partially because it will look much nicer, and finally because it removes two existing recessed Veluxes which act as big bass traps!

When I got the Tannoys I told the other half I was getting some bookshelf speakers-as in speakers the size of bookshelves!

In the past, I had given thought to opening a shop. Selling only used stereo gear. Just rotate the gear through my living room into the store, shopping eBay and other places for bargains, bid accordingly and buy anything that you get a good price on, clean it up and place it in my system, and once tired of it move it to the store with a small profit in its price to pay the bills. Many hi-fi shops today take trade ins and sell used gear, but a shop that only sells used gear, I think would go over well. I’m too old and crippled now, but it would surely be a job that would be easy to wake up to.

My plan is to open a coffee and vinyl shop, with a decent system in there and music on all the time. Would sell equipment too. I already have enough kit and vinyl to stock the place. Sounds like you have been giving this some thought. Perhaps you could use the same premises as the old record shop. But if you are serious about giving it a go you need to get cracking, you're not getting any younger you know.

I have somehow found myself with two copies of the same Norah Jones CD - what would you give me for one of them? I also have two vinyl copies of Scritti Politti's 'Cupid & Psyche '85' (another future classic). Make me an offer!

Cupid & Psyche! I remember reading a review of that on teletext when it came out.

Can't use the old record shop premises as need a premises that is zoned for food and drink. Plus it was too small which is why he moved, he had that much stock you couldn't get in the door. And it's already become a vaping shop.

Not that there's any shortage of empty stores that would do round here. It seems there is actually a limit to how many bookmakers shops can be sustained within 500 feet of each other. If you rent one off the council you can get 3 months free of rent and business rates I'm told.

Interesting story about these CD's: A few years ago my car got broken into and all of my CD's had been nicked. All that was there were two copies of this damn Norah Jones. Thing is, they weren't mine to begin with, the thief had left them for me. How mean is that? He could have just done a turd on the drivers seat, that would have been preferable. :(

I tried sneaking them into the wheely bin, but when I went to bring the emptied bin back up the drive I saw that the CD's had been chucked onto the ground. Some things you can't even give away.

That is something I have dreamed of doing myself many times; it always seemed weird to me that coffee shops close so early & I really don't want to have to go in a pub just for a cup of coffee & to relax, so I am amazed that it hasn't been done before, at least in any of the towns & cities I have frequented over the years.

I have seen those speakers before , they are just like those but wrapped in 24K gold leaf and blasting the Rolling Stones in the White House right now!

I am very happy with these, updated 2.0 crossovers (Path resisters, Clarity Cap CSA,Solon perfect lay inductors,Audison internal wire), I will most likely never replace these unless a pair of Tannoy Westminsters are miss delivered to my house!
These are 98 db @ 1 watt 20khz to 30 hz very flat and needs no sub-woofer .

Thanks gents but I'm not really seeking out 'hifi' in a bedroom environment ;), have radio on through the day, maybe listen to a cd/record/MP3 while I'm waiting for the sandman to blow oofle dust in my eyes.. (and maybe Ravel's Bolero when I'm entertaining :D)

Proper system. I bet that Manley Stingray is awesome with your speakers.

It is well matched and sounds good , this system was a big step down and a compromise, I am glad I kept all my expensive power cables , interconnects and speaker cables but thats how life is.
All the wire probably matches the cost of the gear it's self. no making fun of the audiophile dust , every 6 months I clean up the stereo ,then reapply new audiophile dust as needed to get just the right tone.

Some shots of the Stingray, Evana is really cool , she hand selected this one for me and signed the top of the middle transformer, I have been to her factory , She sent me the front license plate in the mail Tubes Rule it was on the front of her restored Ford Pinto . She could have any car she wants and drives a like new Pinto. She is Evana unchanged by success.

Hi Jerry

The room isn't 'bare', just minimalist ;-)

Genesis main drivers are planar ribbons which have a dipole radiating pattern so are less affected by absorptive material. I have had a laptop and microphone set up to help get the frequency range (mostly) flat in the room and soft furnishings or tube trap type thingies were not necessary

The sofas in the room do have plenty of soft furnishings too

I am working on my horn system for many years (+15) being all this time convinced of the superiority of the horn principle and not giving up. My last iteration was replacing the midbass with a pair of Audac for which I've got a good price. Now I am even closer to perfection as I understand it :)

Just noticed this!

The UL6 is technically the better speaker, and also sonically in a hi-fi sense (overall superior detail and definition), but the 15XRs have better (deeper) bass, and as the system is also used for movies, the twin ABRs [in conjunction with the two Yamaha 10-inch subs, which are hidden] defo add extra 'body' and impact to things such as explosions and gunfire:)

The 15XRs, however, are no slouches either with music; indeed they sound great. Remember that they've been re-capped with some rather lovely Jantzen Silver Z-caps, see here: http://www.jantzen-audio.com/silver-z-cap/, rewired internally with quality cables, and the terminals at the back upgraded with solid-copper ones from Cardas, so 'stock' they ain't!;)

My plan is to open a coffee and vinyl shop, with a decent system in there and music on all the time. Would sell equipment too. I already have enough kit and vinyl to stock the place. Where I live is now effectively a university campus, they are building huge halls of residence just down the road. Show the students what they are missing out on :)

I used to tell folk that my cafe was really an excuse for me to play music all day! Had a good set-up with big old Heathkit speakers sitting on top of the fridges. Must have turned many folk on to things I played,,plus had great meetings with passing musicians - local stars Stormzy, Mr Dury.....

Are they DIY? If so which design?

They were built by Slawa of SW1X for his personal use and improved on the Endorphin P17 who's design is on line. When I bought them the drivers were vintage Alnico Grundig tweeter, Saba Greencone vintage alnico, and vintage alnico Altec 416B (VOTT). Everything silver wired and high quality crossovers.

Like all Hi fi its a never ending process to bring about further improvements and I have been trying for about a year to see if I can improve on the Saba Greencones. I persuaded myself that I should be able to improve on midrange drivers costing about £150 and about 60 years old. Surely hi fi had moved on in that time! Its been a long journey but finally I found the Cube Audio FC8s albeit at ten times the cost of the Sabas. They replace the midrange and tweeters with a point source driver.

I just have the job of integrating them perfectly into the baffles. They extend further up and down the frequencies than the Sabas so 'crossovers' will need some tweaking.

that's what I need Chris - a HiFi room :-)

For me its been a two edged sword. The room I commandeered is L shaped with an 8 ft ceiling at one end, and a 14 ft ceiling at the other. The walls are dry lined plasterboard. I tried the open baffles in all four orientations, N,S E and W. What I have now is the best location but its where the ceiling is highest and echoes are bad.

So a fair bit of expense to find the right acoustic treatment - thanks GIK, but as its my room I can have it as messy or odd as I like :)
