There you go... Pretty much as predicted, and Kenny had enough chances to get his hat-trick! :)

yup, 2 and an assist makes about 3 ;) we both win lollypops. a better performance once they got going, and at least they didnt give up or play in 10 minute spells.
Man u won 1-0 over spurs too

Indeed... What a difference in the drive, momentum and desire of the team. Murty and Miller deserve lots of credit.

Thought Holt played well but Dorrans was badly missed in midfield

And i see congrats are due to Celts for equalising their record, even if it wasnt done in the style they hoped. 1-1 and still unbeaten in 62 now i think

Marco
28-10-2017, 16:43
Yeah, I wasn't super-confident about today's game, given the 'Stevie Clarke' factor. That's two points he's taken at both Ibrox and Celtic Park, which is a fantastic achievement for Killie.

It was a real coup the club getting a manager like him, and I can see the team climbing the table pretty quickly, and getting a few more 'shock results' this season! :)

Marco.

struth
28-10-2017, 17:46
Yes a good point for killie Clarke is good at organising but struggled a bit with imagination when at wba. My mates were glad to get shot on end. Funny Celtic draw with them and get praise and gers do same and sack manager. Lol

Marco
28-10-2017, 17:59
Yeah, but under very different circumstances. I think Celtic will have had one eye on the Bayern Munich game on Tuesday, reflected by the six changes they made to the team line up.

Marco.

struth
28-10-2017, 18:04
Yes it's a big chance for them to get a result. Don't think the crowd will bother the Germans but might inspire your lads. Looking for a high score draw a bit like the city game

Marco
28-10-2017, 18:46
Yeah, if offered that, I'd take it right now. Realistically, a point's the most we can hope for, especially as it looks like Simunovic will still be out, so it'll be another reshuffled defence.

I'll be happy though, as long as we play well and push them as far as possible, even if we lose :)

Napoli 2 - City 4

What a game!
Sergio scored goal number 178, and is now City's all time record goal scorer.
City are through to the next round, and need just one more point to top the group.

Yup, totally agree, but you missed Griffiths' wonder free kick! Check this out:

To be champions sometimes you have to 'win ugly', which we did today with the 0-1 win, but that goal would grace a Champions League final! :)

a good up n over. wasnt hit all that hard so keeper should have got closer tho. worthy winner tho. gers gae was predictable.. had most of the chances and only 2 or 3 on target. other side have 3 and score 2. poor team ethic and ability overall; but mostly ethics.

Man U 4-1 Newcastle. Intended watching this on BT but fell asleep instead lol. Missed a good game and the returns of Pogba and the mighty Zlatan. Utd stay 2nd behind current leaders from across the city, ... City, who won 2-0 v Leic ;)

Cheers, mate. PSG are just a different ball game altogether, and trust me, they'll give a few teams a good gubbing this year, en route to the CL final...

The reality is we're ahead of where we were at this stage last season:

Clear at the top of the league [check]

Scottish League Cup won [check]

But unlike last season, if we don't lose against Anderlecht at home on December 2nd, we'll still be in Europe after Christmas!

Are you happy with how City are progressing on all fronts? :)

Hi Robin,

I agree - it was never a penalty.

However, the French guy for Motherwell (forget his name) who gave away the penalty against Sinclair (who dived), should've been sent off earlier for his disgraceful 'tackle' (read as reckless lunge) on Dembele, so I think the referee realised he'd made a mistake there and made up for it with the later penalty, as there was *some* contact.

That said, he also made a number of blunders throughout the match, so defo didn't have the best of games.

Aye, I'm fully aware of that, Grant.
I'm not drawn by the nonsense being talked about.
There's way too much season ahead to start any title talk. More injuries could seriously dent our chances.
However, we now hold the record for most consecutive league victories, which is something to celebrate.

We have to go to Swansea next, to continue the run, and we play host to Tottenham next Saturday

Rangers have given Graham Murty the managers job on a contract to end of season. Something they should have done 6 weeks ago as there was no outstanding candidate available or interested. YA DANCER :yay::yay:

Get it RIGHT UP YEEZ!! :upyours::upyours:

Well that should wipe the smile off of Craig Levein's swarmy bearded coupon!! :D:D

The scoreline should've been much more emphatic, given the chances we created, and it's a pity it wasn't [as I'd have loved to have royally humped them], but with all our injury problems, we still pulled off a great result against one of the league's in-form teams.

Great to see Dembele get a goal, with all the transfer stuff surrounding him, which will help, and give him confidence, and also Edouard, who's getting better with every game, so hopefully we won't miss Griffo too much! Kouassi is beginning to show his class, and Ntcham just keeps on improving. He going to turn into a top European player for us, and when he eventually does leave Celtic, will go for big money!

Craig Gordon being out injured for up to 12 weeks is a blow, but I have full confidence in De Vries, who's settled into the club now and developed into a top keeper, plus I fully expect us to sign another goalie, as cover for him, before the transfer deadline ends tomrrow - and perhaps also another defender, although young Ajer has been a revelation since he's come into our defence, and has made a big difference.

I guess you have to be happy being 14 points clear at the top of the league, when your team aren't firing on all cylinders because of injuries to key players. Oh and the new boy, Charly Musonda, from Chelsea, looks like an intriguing prospect, with bags of skill and tricks... I suspect he'll be terrorising some SPL defences in the not too distant future! ;)

When we get all our players back from injury (which are numerous), it's shaping up to be some team... Zenit will be the big test, though! :)

A little [they just caught us on an off day, and the crazy winning run had to come to an end sometime].... However, we might do the job properly next time at their place! ;)

Anyway, your lot have improved big time - still not much goal threat in the team, but you've tightened up nicely at the back and added some steel in there (and creativity too) with some of your new signings. The next game at Ibrox will be interesting :)

Marco.

struth
30-01-2018, 22:33
Aye it might be a decent game. Think Cummings will score a few. Much depends on Morelos as although he is dynamic and gets into positions his finishing needs to be more regularly on target. He's only 21 and in first season in this level so plenty time

Marco
30-01-2018, 22:44
Yeah finishing ability is what's lacking in Morelos. He also needs to be given more support. I rate him, though. I also think Martin and Naismith will do you a turn :)

Yeah, but he'll be a different player for you, as he's a Rangers man, through and through - and you need as many of those in your team as possible, whilst trying to offload some of the Portuguese pretenders and wastes of space (Alves, Dalcio, Cardoso, etc)...

Oh and finally accept that Kranjcar can't hack it in the SPL!!

Marco
18-02-2018, 10:45
Mmm... We'll see. Apart from being defensively solid (although their goalkeeper for me was suspect), I agree that they looked fairly ordinary. However, that could've simply been because Celtic made them look that way, such was the quality of their play, which was the best I've seen all season. Zenit went through the previous group stage unbeaten though, so they can't be all that bad.

I do think that BR's tactics and the team's high-energy, pressing style took Zenit aback a little, which they appeared to have little answer for, and that coupled with their rustiness, with having not played competitive football for 2 months, was the reason for their poor performance, but no doubt that Mancini (a manager I rate highly) will have learned from the experience, and on their own patch will have his team better prepared this time to deal with that.

I think we'll definitely have to score over there, and play to the same standard as we did at home, to get through the tie.

Marco.

Yeah, the old firm back on top together, lol... TBH, with all the injuries we've got to key players, coupled with key players who are fit, performing well below par (Sinclair, Dembele, Lustig), it's amazing we've not had a worse time of it recently!

The result in Europe during the week was probably a blessing in disguise, as if we'd got through that tie, it would've simply papered over the cracks and been a distraction against going for another domestic treble (and most importantly ensuring that we win the league), and more games to play, which we don't need, in a tournament we'd have had no chance of winning...

What we need now is to get all (or as many) of our injured players back fit, and concentrate fully on the domestic front - and when we get those players back, I can't see anyone stopping us... Then build for next season's European qualifiers.

*However* I think that the forthcoming game at Ibrox, in a fortnight, has got all the hallmarks of a cracker, and if you guys keep winning up until that match, you'll be in the best position for a long time to beat us.

Marco.

Yeah, Liverpool in particular, looked fabulous and are beginning to reap the rewards of Klopp being given time to get his shit together. Utd are also improving under Mourinho, all of which will make for a fantastic battle for next season's title (as City have it in the bag for this year).

From the BBC Sport website, commenting on the Aberdeen vs Celtic game:

Rodgers had a dig at their domestic rivals, who have not had to deal with the demands of a European campaign, as he celebrated a ninth straight win over the Dons under his tenure, and a 10th for Celtic since their last defeat in February 2016.

He predicted the champions, who have already retained the League Cup, would only get better in the remaining weeks of the domestic campaign as they chase a second successive domestic treble.

"We are on an even keel with other teams now as there are 10 games to go in the league, and some teams around us have been on holiday for a year with virtually one game a week," he said.

"We have dealt with everything up to this point and now we can really focus and concentrate domestically. Hopefully we can finish off what has already been a really good season so far and make it another great season."

Pretty much what I was saying, but we'll need the bulk of our injured players back, in order to hit top form again!

Marco
26-02-2018, 10:01
I honestly welcome that Grant, and hope so! :)

Quite simply, because the better that Rangers become, and start to properly challenge us for the title, the better we'll have to be, in order to stay on top, thus pushing up not only our standards, but those overall of the SPL - and that can only help us compete better in Europe.

It's going to get tougher all the time for Celtic (and especially other SPL teams) competing in that area, simply because of the disparity in the amount of money Celtic get, compared with the other leading clubs of the world [in terms of our history, huge support and worldwide fan base], so we need to be properly tested at domestic level, in order for that to happen.

Celtic (and Rangers) are teams that need to enjoy regular success in Europe, and certainly as far as Celtic are concerned, in terms of where they are now and where they need to be in future, in order to continue their current level of growth, *must* reach the group stages of the Champions League, following times when they qualify, by winning the SPL title, simply to get the £30m, or so, for doing so.

That's the minimum requirement now for Celtic to be where they need to be, and if Rangers should win be the SPL title and enter the Champions League as Scotland's representative, Celtic that season must make a decent impact on the Europa League, in order to maintain their current status and level of success - and those will be the club's goals even after BR has done his bit and moves onto pastures new, as the next man in charge will be expected to achieve no less, and will therefore have to be of a similar calibre.

Good result today for us (after a tricky week without playing a competitive game), and second half performance. The first half was dire and pretty forgettable, but credit goes to Morton who shut down space and stifled our creativity as much as possible.

In the second half though, we upped the tempo much more, and the introduction of Edouard helped change the game and gave Dembele more space on the ball, which he used to good effect. The penalty given for us wasn't one though, as it was outside the box. However, had it not been given, I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the game, as by that time Celtic were well on top - and there was really only one winner, as Morton tired from their earlier exertions.

All in all then, a good result that both puts us through to the semi-finals of the competition and gives us a welcome confidence boost ahead of next Sunday's game against Rangers. In terms of that game, the negatives for us are I think that Rangers can exploit our injury and suspension hit defence, and will De Vries be able to handle the pressure of playing against Rangers at Ibrox? For me he can sometimes look rather nervous in goal, in these types of games, and be prone to making silly mistakes.

The positives are that Dembele seems to have found his shooting boots again, and as he's a big game player I'm confident that both will thrive against Rangers and play a big part in the outcome. I also think that in future there exists the potential of a good partnership between him and Edouard. Another positive of course is some of our injured players coming back, and in that respect I'd expect to see Patrick Roberts taking some part in the game, especially if things aren't going Celtic's way.

In any case, I'm certain that this game won't end in a 0-0 draw, like the last one - and that it's going to be a cracker!

Good luck to Rangers tomorrow against Falkirk, although I don't think they'll need it, as I expect them to win comfortably.

A bit more guile around the box and a straight leg from Morelos was all that that was needed. Interesting to see Scott Brown bossed around today in large sections of the game. Hope, indeed.

Marco

Cheers, guys!

Unfortunately Celtic are still a bit too good, but it’s gettung better

Indeed on both counts, Robin. Firstly, in terms of the latter, Rangers have improved MASSIVELY since the last old firm game, especially up front, and credit goes to Murty for that, who I think is doing a great job, and should now be given the manager's position permanently. For me, he's earned it!

Plus, long may the improvement in Rangers continue, because both Scottish football and Celtic *need* a strong Rangers - and next season I'd like to see a proper title challenge from them. That was undoubtedly the best (most open and even) old firm game for a long time, and I enjoyed this win more than even the 1-5 game at Ibrox last year, simply because Celtic were made to WORK for it!

However, in terms of the former (in bold above), that is also true, and the reality is that Celtic are going to get considerably stronger, not just for the remainder of the season, once all our key players return from injury, but also next season, after we've strengthened the team again in the summer and spent some of this season's CL/Europa league money, and banked the £7m from Liverpool, for the Van Dijk transfer.

On top of that, will Dembele leave in the summer, whom I think, having regained his fitness and form is going to be a sensation between now and the end of the season, and as such Celtic potentially pocketing £20-30m for his transfer? Just imagine the players we could buy for that.......? Especially with strikers of the quality of Griffiths and Edouard already at the club. I'd spend a good chunk of it on our defence!

Quite simply though, Celtic are currently operating on a totally different financial plane from Rangers, and as long as that remains the case, will be able to afford to buy a better class of player, which as much as Rangers played well today, was evident in the likes of Rogic, Ntcham, Dembele and Edouard - all of whom were a class apart and simply unmatched in quality by any Rangers player on the field or on the bench.

A good gauge of how strong both teams are just now, is to look at their respective subs benches today, and Celtic's was markedly superior, full of classy potential match winners, one of whom of course came on to score the winning goal.

That said, until we can both improve our defence [Boyata was an utter liability today] and get all our players there back and fit, then field a settled defence [a luxury not afforded to Rodgers virtually all season], Rangers will be capable of causing us problems, so if they keep up their current form, will always have a chance in forthcoming old firm games, including the cup one in a few weeks.

In terms of today's game however, with the Celtic defence, let's not forget that we fielded our third-choice goalkeeper (who incidentally had a great game), his first in a Celtic shirt, and at Ibrox too, so that showed his character, and were also without Lustig, who is always commanding in these games - and yet despite that and being down to 10 men, with 30 mins still to play, still managed to win the match, which included coming back twice from being behind!

That shows the character, mental toughness and winning mentality of the players: it's the form of champions, organised by a manager who really knows his stuff.

Once Rodgers can decide who his best pairing is in central defence, and play them week in, week out, that will make a big difference to how solid we are at the back. Kompper will be one mainly for next season. I'm not surprised he wasn't thrown in today, as he's still settling into Scottish football, but from what I've seen of him so far he looks calm and assured, something that Boyata isn't. I was also impressed today with Hendry, who also looks to be a sound signing.

So, as I said it was a superb game and also a great advert for Scottish football. Rangers played very well, especially in the first half and are a much more potent force now than they've been for sometime.

Plus, I expect them to get better still - and they'll need to - because the reality is that the Celtic team who beat them today, minus the likes of Gordon, Lustig, Armstrong (who's just come back from injury), Roberts and Griffiths, and that's not including what Charly Musonda might do when he gets going, was FAR from at full strength, so the team have the potential to become considerably better.....

I look forward to the forthcoming Scottish Cup semi-final at Celtic Park, where Rangers have done well recently, and so I expect that game to be just as tough as the one today, probably more so, as it's now Rangers' only chance of a trophy this season, and the chance to stop our double treble. Bring it on. It should be another cracker!!

In the meantime, I leave you with Edouard's stunning strike for the winner [a player, incidentally, who's getting better all the time, and I think next season, if he gets enough games, has the potential to be a sensation:

tbh i didnt expect we would have got so close so soon, so in that aspect im quite pleased. the team bottled it a bit considering the game was there for them, but the loss of bates early was a blow a cardoso is not a footballer anywhere near good enough for the premier league, at moment anyway. alves has lost his sharpness since his injuries and is now looking his age. these were always going to be the biggest issue. mccrorie being out was a blow too as he is big and strong;just whats needed in these games.
celtic have a lot of depth to squad and its something we wont get anytime soon. money wise, yes its going to be hard to keep closing when your side has so much, but money and players alone wont definitely make a winning team.(it does help tho)

overall the game was close enough that either side could have won and a draw wouldnt have been unfair, but at end of day if you have the lead twice, then its only your own fault if you lose. the extra man probably aided celtic more than us as you got tighter and we should have changed things accordingly but didnt. murty will learn tho i think and the fans need to get off his and the players backs,,, rome wasnt built in a day.

might add your side did well to bounce back, and that is a sign of champions

I quite like Murty hope he is given the job at the end of the season, unfortunately there are still a number of players not up to the standard required. But there are some good signs, Alves is still strong in the air and won every ball in the air, but not so great on the deck.

Marco
10-04-2018, 21:33
Me too... I think he's improved Rangers immensely and should be given more time to continue the job. Another managerial change, and yet more instability, is not what Rangers need now; they need precisely the opposite, and more time to build a proper challenge to Celtic, which Murty was doing a decent job of.

Realistically, who are they going to bring in as manager that's going to instantly usurp Brendan Rodgers, to win the title, and how much would it cost, including the players necessary? Never going to happen.

The only realistic appointment they could make, who would definitely make a difference and move Rangers forward in the direction they need to go, is Steve Clarke. Perhaps that's a possibility? What he's achieved with Kilmarnock, borders on inhuman.

Anything else, IMO, would be a retrograde step, or the club would risk bankruptcy again trying to lure a 'big name', with the budget needed to achieve that.

Who was responsible then for the disastrous appointment of Pedro Caixinha?

A diddy who largely signed a load of duffers/lazy bastards, not fit to wear a Rangers jersey, some of whom are still tied up on expensive long-term contracts, draining the club of much needed funds, and all of whom are unlikely to kick a ball again for Rangers?

That was the board, no? Therefore, aside from 'saving' the club financially, they've not been blessed with making too many other correct decisions!;)

Understandably, they're all desperate to stop 10-in-a-row.

Realistically however it won't happen, as Rodgers is here for the duration, *unless* before then someone very wealthy buys Rangers, ploughs in multiple millions of pounds, and appoints a manager of a similar calibre, who can assemble a team full of quality international-class players, and thus mount a proper challenge to Celtic.

As I simply can't see that happening anytime soon, I predict that Celtic will win 10-in-a-row. However, I also predict that once done, neither they, nor Rangers, will equal it again.

You never know - the players that have let him down so badly might actually put in the necessary effort and commitment, and get results against Atletico.
I wouldn't go holding my breath about it, but you never know.
Arsenal's away form this season is, well, to be blunt they haven't got any away form.
Nine away defeats in the league so far.

The problem isn't Wenger, it's Wenger's lack of resolve to sort the player situation out.
Behind that, did he have the backing of the board to do something about it?
Arsenal's board are known to begrudge long term staff a gold watch when they retire.

Do you (a) go down to the runaway league leaders and keep your self respect intact, or (b) embarrass yourselves by failing to beat the one team that's almost dead cert to get relegated?

The way they fought and came back in the derby was creditable, and it meant that we needed 6 points to take the title - it wasn't nailed down.

I would welcome it, as it would give the SPL a boost and much needed higher profile. However, neither are going to accept a job like that for peanuts, so where are Rangers going to get the money to pay them, and also the players they'll need to sign, in order to realistically mount a title challenge to Celtic?

The last thing you want is to risk the club going bankrupt again, for the sake of trying to stop 10-in-a-row...

You can guarantee that if Rangers up the ante by appointing such a management team, so will Celtic (in terms of the players they'll sign), in order to remain at the top - and then you'll start a spending war, such as David Murray used to indulge in [remember the old 'If Celtic put down £5, I'll put down £10 bollocks?], and you know how that ended!

Well no surprises today. Rangers again didn't turn up and Celtic won again easily. Congrats to them on the title win. Not to hard these days but you've still got to admire their consistency

Hoping someone puts a team together that can make a game of the league. Ger's should just pack it in if that's the best they can do

Say HELLO to 7-in-a-row! YAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS..... :yay::yay::yay: :champagne::champagne::champagne:

Now to secure a double treble in the cup final!

Thanks guys. The difference in today's game was that we were simply too good, not that you didn't turn up, like in the cup semi-final. There really wasn't much you could have done about it, as the football we played for the first 55 mins was breathtaking and just blew you away, demonstrating the gulf in class. From the first whistle, we just wanted to get the job done and title won, ASAP.

You're right, were it not for your goalkeeper and Celtic taking their foot off the gas in the last half hour, it could've easily been 7 or 8.... What's frustrating for me though, is we don't bring our 'A game', like this, to the table often enough in the more 'mundane' league games, such as against the Motherwells and Kilmarnocks of this world.

We should be playing like that EVERY week! Anyway, still over the moon. Let's hope Gerrard takes the Rangers job (as now seems likely) and can start to give us a challenge, and turn Rangers into something resembling the team that they once were.

Marco.Gerrard to Rangers makes a lot of sense. Big name joining a financially poor league. I hope the rivalry comes back, Scottish football has been the biggest victim of the whole saga.

Hi Oliver,

Interesting that you're a Hearts fan... Shame, as I can't stand Craig Levein!;)

Agree with you about Gerrard, although as long as that works out better than when Celtic appointed another young and untested 'famous player' manager in John Barnes!

Two things come to mind here, though:

1) Gerrard would want multiple millions of pounds to spend on players, before he'd consider the job. Where is that money coming from? I heard a figure of £25m being mentioned, but I'm afraid that would barely scratch the surface, given the gulf that currently exists between Celtic and Rangers. Try doubling that instead, at the very least!

2) He might prefer the Arsenal job, where money won't be a problem. I believe he's on the shortlist for that, too.

Probably more chance of him going to the gunners than up here now. that capitulation will no doubt make him think twice(it would me). Its not so much about money, although lots will be needed, but its the whole way the club currently runs. The vibe has gone; too many people attacking from outside, while inside they just keep tripping themselves up.
Not saying a Gerrard type could not get things going again, but The hatred of the club is never going to go, as its now classed as fair game. In fact it seems more important for any that their own sides .
This more than the quality of the game here, drives box office away.
Celtic are a good team, and a well run club; but even them with their 60 odd thousand crowds need champions league money to keep afloat at the level they are at. So, other clubs really can never compete, due to only getting a single place at the table, and then after several tests at beginning of season when they are not at their best.
Only a fool or a very rich man would invest heavily in football in this country, unless they have ulterior motives

Marco

Probably more chance of him going to the gunners than up here now.

I think it'll happen, as it's coming from enough reliable sources now to for there to be something in it, although for the sake of Rangers, I hope he signed on the dotted line before yesterday's game, as that'd be enough to put anyone off from taking the job!

If the Gerrard thing doesn't happen, then it would be yet another public embarrassment for Rangers, at the end of a dreadful season, and simply too much for their supporters to take. However if it happens, the position suits both parties in many ways, such as:

1) Gerrard's lack of managerial experience would be be reflected in his salary, which right now from that point of view, probably makes him affordable.

2) His appointment would sell lots of season tickets, at a time when many of Rangers' season ticket holders will be thinking twice about renewing them.

3) It would suit Gerrard, as he'd relish the challenge, and IMO is the right type of character for such a job (a winner). Plus in time if he's successful, it'd be great for his CV and act as the ideal stepping stone for getting a job managing in the English Premiership.

4) There would be many players from all over the world who'd love to play for him, if Rangers could afford to sign them, which brings me onto the most important point...

*Therefore*, if he comes, he must be given SERIOUS amounts of cash (and the time) to do a proper rebuilding job of the team, from top to bottom, which is what's needed: a complete clear out, as none of the current Rangers players are good enough to wear the jersey. At a realistic estimate, I'd say that you're talking about a minimum of £30m, just to get 'the ball rolling', and then see what happens.

That's nowhere near enough to stop Celtic, but it would be enough to start the rebuilding, see how it goes, and then later make further investment, if things are going to plan. Plus, the appointment of Gerrard's no2 will equally be crucial, and needs to be someone who not only knows Scottish football inside out, but most importantly what the club means to the fans, which few of the current players have a scooby-doo about!

The problem for Rangers is that Celtic aren't just going to stand still and let them build and get stronger, without them doing the same. Therefore, you can be guaranteed that if Gerrard does become the new Rangers manager, Celtic will up the ante, financially, to ensure that they stay on top - and currently unlike Rangers, have the money to do so.

For me, as I've said, if Gerrard becomes the new Rangers manager, then it can only be good for Scottish football, by significantly raising the profile of our game, and in particular good for Celtic. The fact is, the more we're forced to become stronger, by signing better players to stay on top, the better a team we'll become, and that will only help us compete more in Europe, which is the arena where we now need to excel.

So bring on Gerrard [what about as player/manager too, for one season?] and bring on a proper challenge from Rangers, but for the sake of both Rangers and Scottish football, let's hope that, with a young and ambitious manager at the helm, such as Gerrard, Rangers aren't drawn into a spending war with Celtic, spending money that they can't afford, simply trying to stop Celtic from winning 10-in-a-row. As a Celtic supporter, I certainly want us to succeed in that respect, but not at the expense of Rangers once again going bankrupt.

Because if that happens again, I doubt that the club will ever recover...

They're a bloody disgrace, mate. The arseholes currently there aren't fit for purpose. There should be petitions now outside of Ibrox, from fans, saying 'Sack the Board'! In that respect, they should go back to 1994, and 'do a Celtic'...

If Gerrard turns his back on them, and declines to be the new manager, then I think some sort of fan rebellion is a certainty!

as i said, i dont see gerrard going, especially now. he will want to see the back balance and we dont have one.

Indeed, so the appointment of Gerrard and a (substantial) financial influx from a new or existing investor, in order to facilitate a challenge to Celtic, would have to go hand in hand. Gerrard is currently at Ibrox having talks with the board, with a view to becoming the new manager, and that simply wouldn't happen if the necessary money wasn't there.

Therefore, I expect Gerrard to be announced as the new Rangers manger very soon - and good luck to him. He'll need it, because he'll be taking on the job with Rangers at an all-time low, both on the field and off it...

He's defo a Celtic fan, mate. Read the article all the way through, and you see what Andy Lynch says. It's something I've known for a while, since there were rumours when Rodgers became manager that he wanted to bring Gerrard up to play for Celtic.

Gerrard's allegiances to Celtic mean nowt though, as it didn't stop two of the most famous Rangers supporters/protestants being huge successes at Celtic, as both managers and players respectively, in Jock Stein and Kenny Dalglish!:eyebrows:

True professionals only care about winning and doing their best in the role they've been employed to perform, and that'll also apply to Gerrard, if he becomes Rangers manager.

I agree, but I always look out for the Liverpool score, and would support them against every team but Celtic! I was rooting for them so much when they narrowly lost out on the Premiership title, under Rodgers, and would be delighted if they could do it under Klopp, who's being given the right amount of time to build a team capable of winning the EPL.

*But* he'll need to hold onto his best players, such as Salah and Firmino, and add similar quality to the team during the summer transfer window, if they're to have a chance, as Man City won't give their title easily, and both Utd and Chelsea will be stronger again next season.

Defensively Liverpool were alarming but they are so good attacking, I wonder if they could do it against Real? I don't see why not.

Marco
03-05-2018, 08:18
To be fair, Chris, plenty of teams have lost goals playing Roma at home, where they are very strong. Look at Barcelona!;)

And some of those Roma scored last night had, shall we say, an 'element of fortune' to them, for example the OG and the late penalty that never was.

However, I do agree that defensively (especially at this level) Liverpool are a little suspect, although I rate Robertson (more going forward though than defensively) and van Dijk very highly, plus Karius is a decent keeper.

Lovren, for me, is their defensive weak link. He lacks finesse at this level and sometimes his decision making and distribution is poor.

However, going forward they're superb (although Salah was somewhat disappointing last night), and in a one-off match, especially a cup final, you'd fancy them to out-score anyone, Real Madrid included, especially not the best Real Madrid team there's ever been.

I have a feeling we could be in for something akin to the drama of Istanbul, in 2005, with that famous comeback against AC Milan, although this time it might not go to penalties... Let's hope so!

Btw, good luck to Arsenal tonight. It would be nice to see Wenger bow out on a high :)

Exciting times ahead, mate. Let's hope it puts Rangers back on the map. It'll be interesting to know now how much he has to spend on new players!

Marco.

for various reasons I doubt that will become known, but he seems happy enough. Have a feeling the wage bill will go up tho :eyebrows:

2 pretty much already in for next season, and guessing quite a few more in pipeline. Sure a few have been lined up. Difficulty as always is competing on wages and lack of european footy.
We shall see, but good luck to them.

Im not so sure.

It depends what "doing well" means.

For me closing the huge gap between them and Celtic would be doing well. But they are years away from being realistic contenders for the league.

They might snag a cup, if Celtic have a bad day.

Will that be enough for the Rangers fans. I doubt it. Its all about where they are in relation to Celtic.

" we are catching Celtic, bit by bit " is not going to be sufficient.

Marco
06-05-2018, 20:35
Hi Brian,

Very good points... As has been said before, in terms of Rangers trying to catch Celtic, it'll largely come down to how much money Gerrard will be given to spend on the team - and he'll need PLENTY, in order to try and take the title from Celtic, who incidentally had a very good 1-3 win today against Hearts, in what was always going to be a difficult game, given the result the last time both teams met at Tyncastle.

Apparently, there'll be an announcement to that effect (the money side) tomorrow from Dave King, so we'll see. The reality is, before Rangers are in a position to genuinely challenge Celtic, they'll need to properly get above Aberdeen - and that doesn't just mean finishing second in the league this season with a struggle; that means next season establishing themselves as the bonafide second best team in Scotland, and having the points difference over Aberdeen (and Hibs) to prove it.

However, I do think they'll achieve that next season, and finish a strong second to Celtic - only then would they be in a position to move onto the next level, in the season after that, by mounting a challenge to Celtic for the title, and continuing that again the following year, to try and stop Celtic from winning 10-in-a-row.

It would be a MONUMENTAL, and virtually impossible task to expect Gerrard to assemble a team next season, no matter how much money he gets to spend, which would be capable of winning the title, *but* I expect him to massively improve the Rangers team, and for them to finish a strong second. However, it'll take a year or two for him to get Rangers to where they need to be - although of course much also depends on how Celtic strengthen during that period.

Quite simply, due to the money Celtic have earned from the Champions League campaigns they've taken part in over the last few years, as well profiting handsomely from some shrewd signings (which continues to be the case, with Dembele, etc), they are in a different financial league from Rangers, and if necessary will simply outspend them, in order to stay on top - *but* it's not all about money...

Much will depend on how good a coach and manager Gerrard turns out to be, and whether, like Rodgers, he can get more out of the players who are already at the club and build a team, with some quality new signings, which is first and foremost difficult to beat, and then turn Ibrox back into the fortress it once was. Also, in terms of next season, how things pan out at the top will largely depend on whether Celtic can successfully negotiate FOUR qualifying rounds for the CL, to enter the CL group stages.

If Celtic can do that, then they'll bank another £30m, or so, which will strengthen them financially, but also make the team more vulnerable in league games immediately after they've played very difficult matches in the Champions League [as a result of mental and physical tiredness], which Rangers could take advantage of. However, of course, Rangers may face the same problems, if they make progress in the Europa League.

However, I feel that one thing's certain:

Gerrard will make the Rangers team much more skillful, competitive and harder to beat, which quite simply, over the course of a season, will earn them more points than they did under recent Rangers managers, and that will also improve their performances in the cup competitions. How far that ultimately takes them, only time will tell, but the days of Rangers simply being Celtic's whipping boys are probably over - and that's got to be a good thing for the reputation of Scottish football and also Celtic, who when faced with competing against a stronger Rangers, will benefit accordingly, by upping the ante.

Personally, I can't wait to see how it all unfolds!

Hhard to say how far apart they are skill wise, but they are a mile apart mentality wise at moment. One thing the new guy can do is keep any who have the right mentality and then bring in others to suit, both better skills and in the mental toughness.
At moment most of them are weak that way. A lot of the guys are loans as well and in the situation they have been in they very often dont care so much, if they are going back to parent club or dont fancy staying anyway...
Think Alnwick, McCrorie will stay. Murphy will probably be bought, along with the 2 new guys, coming in(arfield and big shagger). of the others, much will depend on how they show up, and if bids coe in etc, but most will go or at best be squad players.
Its all hypothetical tho, as it depends on finance and perhaps some more boardroom musical chairs.

Lol - you're joking, right? Trying to be as impartial as possible, they're further apart there, than twice the length of Sauchiehall Street!:D

You're right about the mentality thing, but the huge difference in skill between the current Rangers and Celtic players, all throughout the team, particularly in midfield and up front, is obvious, both on the pitch itself and in the current market value of the players in both first teams.

Gerrard will be trying hard to redress the balance.

I said it's hard to say HOW FAR apart they are skill wise as the difference in mentality is the overwhelming force. Often is in football and it's really the new way to train folk.
When they have played well they have looked good but they crash and burn as fast as a bit of paper. Football skills is not so much a problem for most players it's their mental toughness. Celtic have this in spades and until sides equal this mentality they won't be able to get close. And that goes for all sides.
The thing I like about hibs is they are aquiring this toughness which is allowing them to use there skills to effect. They are imo the 2 best side in country at moment

Marco

I don't think it's hard at all. Not sure where you're coming from here mate, as the current gulf in class/skill, between the players in both teams, epitomised by the likes of Tierney, Rogic, Ntcham, Dembele, etc, is blatantly clear for all to see:)

its a bit like watching players training... they can do amazing things with a ball etc; doesnt mean they can play football tho:) thats my point. Most pro players have loads of skill... I remember seeing Alex McDonald of rangers train a lot and the stuff he could do with a ball was amazing but on the park he never used that part of his makeup for whatever reasons.
Football is about organization, vision and confidence mostly. the extra skills that the players you mention are the icing on the cake, as they can use that skill under pressure. Its clear that Rangers players cannot, and thus in my mind are crap footballers, even if they have the skills.
I think Gerrard himself has said, he will quickly find out which players have what it takes to do it under pressure, and not give up... Personally I dont think many will survive the cull

Another even bigger factor is managers. A really good manager like celtics can and did make the same players twice as good as the last lad.
Celtic were still top side but dehlia didn't have what Brendan has.
You could put a poor manager in charge at Barca and you will see some of the most skilful players in world get beat regularly.

He did when he was at St Johnstone !!!!!!!!!

But of course, we were a team who encouraged skills, finesse, class etc etc.... unlike the big 2 at the time.

Kick and run was not a tactic you would ever find on our play list.

Skills, skills, skills
Pass and run, pass and run.

It is a little known fact that Barcelona heard about our methods and came to study them, in training. They acknowledge even today the effect Saints had on their approach, and how much in debt they are .

“Tippy Tap football”...... yes.............. invented in Perth.

Alex McDonald in his prime (before Rangers got a hold ) next to Messi, and Iniesta.

That all makes sense, but my own feelings are that if Celtic are likely to drop points before the end of the season, it'll be tonight against Kilmarnock, as since Clarke took over, they've been a bit of a bogey team.

Against Aberdeen, at Celtic Park, the players will see that as a big game that they'll want to win, to keep the momentum going ahead of the cup final the following week, against Motherwell. So for that reason, I'll go for Rangers finishing second :)

Lol, well that's obviously currently the case in Scotland, highlighted among other things, by 7 SPL titles in a row!;)

They'll defo be playing for cup final places in the Aberdeen game, plus they'll want to beat one of their biggest rivals on the last game of the season, on their home patch. They certainly won't want to go into the cup final, on the back of a defeat, so if Rangers do what they need to do, that should give them second place.

i'd expect a few players that dont sit in first 11 to play. they will probably try to catch the eye for the final. the others wont want to pick up an injury and wont maybe give 100%.
for the other 3 sides its a cup final, so celtic should both field their strongest side and should win, if they are the team they think they are. nothing else is acceptable. sure brendan will see it that way too....more or less

Marco
10-05-2018, 09:27
You see? I knew we'd drop points last night against Kilmarnock [0-0], although it was with six changes to the team. I guess it was a bit of a 'nothing' game for both sides, as we'd already won the title, and Killie had no chance of finishing any higher than 5th.

We'll see how 'focussed' the players are on Sunday, in the final game against Aberdeen... I'm not expecting Rodgers to field anything other than the strongest team available to him, and for Celtic to want to win, especially at home and a week before the cup final.

However, it's arguable that a win is more important for Aberdeen, and they've got to beat us sometime! We'll see :)

Am I 'happy' that because Celtic lost 0-1 to Aberdeen, it denied Rangers second place in the league? AM I FUCK!! I was still cheering Celtic on in the dying minutes, hoping for an equaliser, so we wouldn't have lost out unbeaten home record, even if that meant Rangers finishing second!

Only the brain dead/idiotic Celtic fans would've wanted their team to lose at home, in the final league game of the season, when the championship trophy was being handed out, just to stop Rangers finishing second:doh:

Count me out of that pish....:nono:

Anyway, so much for 'building some momentum' before the cup final next weekend against Motherwell (although Aberdeen did deserve to win, as they wanted it more) - some of the Celtic players better get their act together and stop swanning around the place, considering that the job is done and prematurely thinking about their summer holidays!!:rolleyes:
