Expecting Fod to leave. He fell out with everyone.
A few fans not happy about him but time to draw a line under what happened

The McGregor one's been on the cards for a while. If he's still as good as he once was, it'll be a good signing. Meanwhile, we've just made one of our best signings of the season, by holding onto one of our best players:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/921/UJAhWJ.jpg

"Tom Rogic has signed a new five-year contract which will see him remain at the club until at least the summer of 2022".

:yay::thumbsup:

The boy is pure class. I'd say he's currently worth in the region of £10-15m [with the potential to become a £30-40m player, in a bigger league]. He could easily play for one of the top six teams in the EPL.

He’s a good player but rarely plays for 90 minutes.

He has been lately. For example, he finished the game last weekend against Aberdeen. It's certainly not a fitness issue, probably more down to Rodgers 'shuffling the pack' at that point in games, once he's done his bit, to allow someone like Sinclair to come on and change things.

I think the prices I've quoted are pretty accurate, especially now he's signed a new 5-year contract.

He's a first-choice Australian international player, and only 25, so not even at his peak yet. There's no way Brendan Rodgers would let him go for any less than £12m, and I'm not even sure he would at that.

IMO, he's in the same ballpark, quality-wise, as Virgil van Dilk, who we sold to Southampton, now at Liverpool, and he signed for them for £75m! So that's the kind of potential he has. Plus, if he has a great World Cup and puts himself on the map, then that will also increase his value.

Indeed that applies to all the Celtic players, who'll be playing for their respective countries at this World Cup:

1) Mikael Lustig (Sweden).

2) Moussa Dembele (France).

3) Dedryck Boyata (Belgium).

4) Jozo Simunovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

5) Erik Sviatchenko (Denmark).

6) Cristian Gamboa (Costa Rica).

7) Tom Rogic (Australia).

And if Scotland had qualified, there'd have been another seven!

Anyway, it'll give the tournament an added interest for me :)

Stones doesn't usually switch off.
He has been caught out of position a few times, or had the ball taken off him and not had the speed of thought or body to get back quickly enough.

Van Dijk somehow managed to hide for a whole game, on the pitch, and in front of 50 odd thousand supporters when Southampton rocked up at ours last.

Fair enough, but I think he's improved at Liverpool, and for me is now a top central defender. Don't remember him "switching off" much during the matches you played against Liverpool in the CL, certainly at Anfield;) I'd defo have him back at Celtic, in a shot, (although we couldn't afford him now)!

Anyway, my point was that, IMO, Rogic is good enough to play for any of the top six sides in the EPL, and once there, would almost certainly develop into a £30-40m rated player. Not sure, Chris, if you know him, but he's a class act. Look out for him at the World Cup:)

Decent, yes, but if Gerrard wants to wrestle the title off us next season, or stop 10-in-a-row, he'll need much more quality. Basically, he'll need to find another Tierney, Brown, Rogic, Ntcham, Forrest, Dembele etc, type player, to put in a Rangers shirt.

Is there money available for that? Doesn't seem like it so far....

Well are easy to master if you match their physicality. We struggle with that as our players are not big enough and most not got it where it counts. Hoping the new lads will change that. Want 2 big hard defenders. Lol

Ah well Utd not really emulated their early season form. Tbh mourinio is too defensive for a Utd side. Surprised they gave him an extension.

Completely agree. Mourinho is never a Man Utd manager, in terms of getting them to play the Man Utd way [free-flowing, attacking football], but over the course of the season will get them enough good results. However, Liverpool and Man City are the league's entertainers, and play football the way it should be played!

I've never been a Chelsea fan, but well done to them for winning the cup. Talking of cup final goals, check out this howitzer, from Callum McGregor [honestly, it's worth watching, from a pure skill POV, even if you have no interest in Celtic]:

For me though, the celebrations aren't OTT; it's not often you get to win a double treble [never been done before in the history of Scottish football], so why not celebrate it? That's why the tour happened. It was an historic event. There was none of that last year when we had 'just' won the treble :)

well if they had won something where there was competition i would be all for it, but they have coasted to it due to very poor opposition.. would have preferred them winning the europa cup.
but as i say, if they are happy, im not going to argue. i might add if it were gers at top in same circumstance i would feel the same.(not that that is likely alas)

on another note, congrats to little livingston for making it to the spl against the odds. shame we will have yet another 3g pitch tho, as this does put off top players coming to scotland.

I would disagree, as first of all you can only beat who's in front of you, and regardless of that, the level of consistency Celtic have shown, playing at a high standard in more games than anyone else has played, is still remarkable, especially coming back from extremely difficult International and Champions League games, and still managing to win, often away from home at difficult grounds.

Plus, although the competition may not be of the highest technical standard, players are extremely committed, and you have to fight very hard to win, often against 10 men behind the ball, as every time the other teams play us, it's like a cup final to them!

So I can assure you it's not as easy as you think for Celtic to have achieved what they have, and also this time by losing and drawing more games than last season's 'invincible' one, and winning the league by much less points. Therefore, I'd disagree with your comment about "coasting" it.

In the cup final at the weekend, Motherwell made it difficult for us, especially in the second half, and of course have drawn against us twice in the league, ditto Kilmarnock, including a win at Rugby Park. Hibs have also beat us and drawn twice against us, and of course there was that 4-0 thumping from Hearts at Tynecastle...

So no, "coasted to it". I don't think so :nono:

Next season will be even harder, as no doubt Gerrard will improve Rangers, and this time we've got to play FOUR CL qualifiers, not long after the players get back from their summer holidays, and as I've mentioned already, quite a few of them will also have been at the World Cup, so it's going to a testing time for us next season, which will be far from easy, but bring it on! :hifive:

Unfortunately all the European ties come early which makes it hard to qualify, I thought Celtic only had a couple of players who have been selected for the World Cup.

Marco
21-05-2018, 16:02
Nope... All the ones I listed earlier (seven) are in the squads of their respective countries, and some are in the first teams. And yes, next time it'll be harder than ever for Celtic to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

However, every year when the bar is raised, the team rise to meet the challenge, and with no doubt some quality additions to the squad in the summer, I expect them to do it again. Let's hope that Rangers emulate them, in that respect, and have a decent run in the Europa League! :)

Yeah, the transfer was done and dusted last season, and we put him out on loan to St Mirren, where he banged in about 17 goals that helped them to the title (and promotion).

If he's got the right mentality (I think he's clearly good enough) to play for a team like Celtic, then Rodgers isn't exactly shy of putting youngsters into the team. We'll see. However, it's always good to see another talented young Scottish player:)

probably depends if any ahead of him, go out, and of course who else comes in. its a big squad of good players so not an easy nut to crack.
i see the skrtel deal is dead.. not fussed as he is 34 and starting to pick up knocks now. his wage at fernabace is rediculous at 60k. shows the inadequacies of the spl i guess.

Marco
24-05-2018, 09:28
Ah, didn't see the Skrtel thing... I'd be wary anyway of signing up all the 'golden oldies', at the tail end of their careers, who may join for the wrong reasons and not be able to handle the physical nature of the Scottish game, or the demands of playing for a club like Rangers.

Plus, it's no way to build for the future or acquire player assets, as what you're spending is just dead money. Gerrard has got three years to try and stop Celtic winning 10-in-row [his main target, no matter what anyone says], so he's got ample time to sign some talented younger players, and build, which by the time we get to season 2020/21, he should have a team that can give Celtic a damn good go.

That's the right way to do it!

yup, im more interested in a good team of youngish players, playing attractive footy, but there are many who's only thought is 10. i couldnt give a damn about that as we werent around for many of them. the whole point should be to get a self sustaining side that can compete and win.

24-05-2018, 09:41
rangers fans and board need to learn how to walk again before they start running

Marco
24-05-2018, 10:05
I completely agree. Also, from a Celtic point of view, what interests me FAR more than the '10 thing' is simply ensuring that we win the league, in order to play in the Champions League qualifiers, and thus potentially come up against some of the 'big boys' later, and earn lots of money in the process, which helps keep the club where they are.

I'm not obsessed with the 10 thing at all. However, in terms of Rangers not being in the SPL for some of Celtic's recent title wins, I'm not sure if they had been there it would've made that much difference, as I think we'd still have been good enough, pre Rodgers, to win the title, even with the presence (then) of Rangers.

The other thing I disagree with is some saying that the trophy success Rodgers has achieved with Celtic is partly down to the fact that the league is not as strong now as it was when the likes of Walter Smith won the treble with Rangers.

I don't buy that. I do buy the undeniable fact that Rangers were MILES better in those days and provided a much sterner challenge to Celtic than they do currently - you'd need to be a blinkered idiot not to accept that fact - *but*, IMO, the rest of the teams now, certainly in the top six, are better than they were when Rangers last won the treble.

You just need to look at the likes of Aberdeen now, under Derek McInnes, Hibs, under Neil Lennon and Kilmarnock, under Stevie Clarke, as well as your Motherwells and St Johnstones, all of which are better teams now than they were during the 2000s. We've got some great managers now in the SPL. So I'd say that, Rangers aside, the SPL is the strongest it's been for ages, and that that should be taken into consideration when assessing the success that Rodgers has had.

There are no really easy games anymore, which is why that despite Celtic having by a country mile the best team in the league, and their 'embarrassment of riches', compared with the other clubs. they haven't managed to rout any teams 6 or 7-0 recently, which used happen fairly regularly before. If Gerrard can get Rangers back up there again, then Celtic will have to work harder than ever for any further titles success they might get.

And that would only be a good thing!

Indeed, the only consolation for me was that Real effectively won the game courtesy of my favourite player in the world, the magnificent [WELSH] Gareth Bale... What a wonder goal his first one was!!:wow:

Got to be one of the best goals scored EVER, in ANY match, let alone in a Champions League final - just incredible!

Mane scored a cracker too. Good final tho

Losing Salah so early too, was pivotal, as it killed the momentum Liverpool had at that time. I'm so sad for him, and also Egypt (in terms of the forthcoming World Cup], if the shoulder injury turns out to be as bad as it looks...

In the end Liverpool did really well, and although they won't say so now, at the beginning of the season if you'd said they'd have reached the Champions League final, they'd have taken it - and let's not forget with a team (and squad) that costs substantially less than the likes of Man City, Barcelona or PSG, all of whom went out of the competition much earlier.

They need to sign some more quality players in the summer, particularly a goalkeeper, and if they buy well, with Klopp at the helm they can have a right good crack next season at winning the EPL.

Karius is finished. Need a keeper desperatly.

Did so well to get there, just didn't have the squad to manage without Salah. A great effort and yes, we'd have taken 4th in the league and a CL final.

Yup, just not enough strength in depth yet, compared with a team like Real Madrid. When you can bring someone like Gareth Bale off the bench - and then he goes and does *THAT*, well......

Ramos is just a wonderful bastard of a defender. I adore him.
Modric is a wonder. Moves the ball so quickly so effectively, never hardly runs or tackles but Everything goes through him.
Personally never thought Liverpool would nab this. 13 CL titles Madrid... amazing

Lol... I honestly wish him all the best. As I've said before, from a Celtic point of view, we can *only* gain from the existence of a strong Rangers, and an increase in competitive games accordingly, so hopefully Gerrard is the man!

I see Rangers have signed Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool for 12 months. another midfielder:rolleyes: he was part of the under20 england side at said world cup, which i think they won last time. guess he is better than his displays when on loan to sunderland. i know he was expected to be a world beater, but seems to have lost his way. he's a big strong and quick lad tho.

Yup. See how the squad looks in a few weeks. Need some defenders of ability through the door and at least 1 striker. Probably 2

If we get goldston in too, then thats 2 BIG centre halves. Both 6'4" i think. Got bullied to easy last few years so that should help, as long as they are mobile too.
Good price imo, and should be a sellable asset.

Yes, good to see some forward planning makes a change from the usual firefighting approach

Glad we've now signed up this boy for £9m, as he showed glimpses of real quality last season, and who I believe will grow into be a real top striker for Celtic:

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11787/11405737/odsonne-edouard-signs-four-year-deal-with-celtic

All we need to do now is hold onto Dembele! Not sure that'll happen, though... If he does stay for another season, we'll have around a £35m forward line, excluding Griffiths :)

You might need those new defenders!;)

Marco

I agree about the shrewd buy, financially, and we've had a few of those in recent times!

For me, he's tailor-made for the Champions League, so hopefully he'll get us there via the qualifiers, and then enhance his reputation on the biggest stage of all:)

Flanagan confirmed on a 2 year deal with a 12 month option. the place is starting to resemble liverpool with all the accents:D
still, his problems apart, he is a good and versatile player, covering anywhere across back line.

still awaiting some forward additions tho.

on rangers front we seem to be about to strike a deal with roma for a year long loan for umar sadiq. big tall striker, and may be a bit special.... may be bloody useless too of course;)

There's a chance, depending on how much Man City would want. I would certainly welcome the move, as we need another quality central defender (and Jason knows the Celtic set up), that is if there's enough in the coffers after the £9m signing of Edouard:)

Not heard of many of the new players coming into Rangers, but no doubt it'll make the team stronger. Looking forward to the start of the new season!

Having now sold Armstrong to Southampton, we're a closing in on John McGinn: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44690849

That's a transfer I've wanted to happen for ages (as I see him as a potential eventual replacement for Brown), plus he's a great player, and I think that sooner, rather than later, it'll be a done deal!

Well at least it was a win last night, with the second goal needed for the away leg. With better finishing it would have been more comfortable. A couple of the new players looked solid.

yup, too many missed chances, and was a bit like deja vu. think we need to change morelos position to behind the striker, and find a striker lol. but, its early days yet and they(opposition) were a decent side tbh. better than most at this stage.
