I only wished I knew about the M55e/Jico SAS combo years before. I've stopped itching to hear other carts now and just think about more records that I can buy. Let's hope that Jico or some other company come up with a replacement.

Think they are working on it Simon.

Here is a link to a guy speaking on another forum. I think he is an employee of Jico.

As always very late to the party but I managed to pick up (sorry for the pun)a nice brown bodied version of the Shure N55e.

1773017731

I've very quickly set this up on my 301 with 3012 arm going through my Sugden Phonostage. The cartridge+stylus+headshell and cartridge tags/leads cost less than £30. It's not making a bad noise considering I'm to listening to carts in the £2K area!

I've dialled in at 1.7g and can honestly say that things did improve. I have a heavy mass magnesium headshell and decent cart leads (high purity copper) I'll be playing around with it over the week.

Mine is grey and has a flip down stylus guard attached. I also have the aforementioned M97xe with both Shure and Jico stylus. I must admit I haven't listened to it much and have never taken the Jico stylus out of the wrapper. It's done maybe seventy hours on its own stylus and I think I put it away because I preferred the AT440MLb. I might dig it out this weekend and give it some exercise.

Here's the Shure with it's swanky new Ortofon Magnesium head shell and high purity copper cartridge and gold plated tags. The pins got a very good clean before fitting with brasso and then IPA to clean any residue and then a final buff with a few cotton buds. The cart is sitting on my 301 whilst I rewire my old Rega tonearm. It sounds great and well worth a punt if you can find one. Things should be lifted to another level with the new JICO stylus.

I've been using a Shure v15iii with a Jico SAS for the last couple of months and am very taken with it. It's very even handed, detailed and images superbly. It more than holds its own with my Goldring Eroica LX and Dynavector DV20XH.

Here's my old beast with the new replacement £40 Jico stylus from Japan. It arrived today and sounds fantastic. I've not paid particular attention to cartridge alignment and my 3012 arse end could do with being dropped a few mm's as it's not quite level. So far this little adventure has cost me £64. This is a fantastic cartridge and well worth a punt if you can find one. I have the Shure V15mk3 and VN35MR stylus and whilst the little Shure isn't as good as it's big brother it's not that far behind. I think Jim and Marco got the sonic characteristics of this cart nailed. Even handed, great soundstaging, reasonable space bewteen instruments, laid back. Surface noise virtually non-existant. I've found the cart works well with a decent record weight, several of my pressing are not quite flat and whilst the little shure tracks well it can be improved by flattening out the vinyl with the record weight. I'll be a little more fastidious with the carts setup tomorrow and get some decent listening done. :eyebrows:

On Vinyl Engine somewhere, there are many threads discussing Shure cartridge bodies. I seem to remember there being around five basic types, all with different fittings and coil-resistances, but these bodies were then spread over the entire production run.

My V15 III's can sound relentless with the stock original styli I have, but I remember being shocked by the improvement the later red 'HE' stylus gave - air and some real depth perspective. I don't think the 'MR' was ever imported to the UK in any quantity, but I suspect it would have improved things further as it seemed to do with the V15VMR. I tried again with the V15T2 (new stock stylus) and it's just too dull for me, although the bass and mids are sublime.

I'm now way out of touch, but are Jico working on an SAS replacement stylus?

Barry
17-08-2016, 18:44
Certainly the Shure V15 Mk. IV, fitted with the MR stylus, was a significant improvement over the stock V15 III.

I gave up with Shure after the V15 III, and switched my alligance to Ortofon and Decca, but I was pleasantly surprised by the V15 IV after listening to my friend's sample.

I tried the standard stylus but could not guarantee how many hours it had seen so i decided to spend £40 on something new I can honestly hand on heart say that I think that it's probably the best way to go. I was lucky and got my '55 for peanuts (first time for everything) and so spending the £40 on the JICO replacement wasn't so bad. The wait from Japan can be a little annoying but the dealer on eBay was quick and it arrived within 2 weeks. I'm now spinning the '55/Alphason combo as we speak and think it sounds excellent for the money. Incidently the JICO SAS stylus start at about £150 the one I bought was JICO but a much cheaper version. The '55 is now my work horse cartridge when I can't be bothered for valves to warm up!

A bit dull and boring in standard form but comes to life with a Jico stylus. I haven't listened to mine for a while and my aural memory isn't always reliable lol. If the parts arrive this week for my phono stage I'll be having a shoot out at the weekend and will give the Shure a whirl. I have a selection of MMs for comparison though I remember having a definite preference for the AT440Mlb. As with most MMs the correct capacitive loading is essential if you want to hear your cartridge at its best.

I've just purchased a Thorens TD150 with a SME series 2 (non improved) tonearm that came with a Shure V15 typeII attached. I've got it set at 1gram(according to the tonearm settings, I've not actually measured it) and when listening with Sennheiser 600HD headphones/Schiit Vali 2 HPA it sounds very well. I'm planning to run it with Schiit Mani phono stage in the very near future which I hope will improve it's sound further.
However while a long term listener of music I'm basically a novice when it comes to cartridges. I've read mixed things here and elsewhere about the Shure V15 typeII. Is it really a museum piece that should be consigned to a drawer ASAP? Would a Shure M97xe be considered a significant upgrade?

Ok, so I think this is about as far as anyone has pushed the old 55E here on the forum. Here's my 55E with £40 JICO stylus and £40 snakewood body. Fitting the new body took 60 seconds tops. It's a simple push fit once you've removed the old brown body from the Shure. Fit is excellent, very snug and tight. The shure cart just needs to be pushed into place and then that's it. I've not heard it yet but hope to post something in the next few days.

Now with regards the Shure cartridge. It's extremely easy to remove the brown casing from the main cartridge body. The cartridge is held in the casing with some very flimsy glue which is no more than 1mm thick in fact I think that the cartridge probably rattles around in the brown shell. All you need is a thin scalpal blade and then very very carefully disect down the side of the left and right sides of the cartridge and then gently wiggle out out of the brown shell. Now the Snakewood headshell is a weird beast. The guy that sent it seems to think that everyone has 1mm mounting bolts, well that's not the case for me all my mounting bolts are 3mm, so yes I had to carefully re-drill the holes with a 3mm drill bit for wood. The cartridge honestly fits the snakewood headshell very very well and simply pushes into place when you remove the Shure's old brown body. I'd say that the headshell definitely acts clarity to the M55E. My investment so far with the Shure M55E has so far cost me about ~£85 and this includes the cartridge, stylus and headhsell. I think you'd have to pay £300-400 to better this in it's form. The most expensive JICO stylus on their website for the M55E is $211 or about £165. So if I bought the new snazzy stylus and starting using it i'd still be in for <£260 and I think that this combo would complete with any MM on the market at the moment and probably give some mid priced MC's (£500-750) a very good run for their money. Just a couple of shots showing the new headshell.

Are you sure you don't have 2.5mm bolts? Because that seems to be the universal standard and it's what's going to be supplied with a cartridge you buy new today. Easy mistake to make but genuinely curious if you really do use 3mm mounting hardware because I'd imagine many cartridges and headshells wouldn't take them, but I've never tried. Using 3mm would actually make life a bit easier because they seem a lot more readily available than 2.5mm nuts and bolts.

Well I tried 2.5mm bolts and go nowhere. The headshells I use all take 3mm no problems I've had no problems mounting cartridges in this way and if I ever did encounter a problem I would simply modify the headshell to accept the mounting bolt. ;)

Indeed. This little cart seems to keep giving. The Snakewood headhsell is something you might want to consider.

Well I'm actually going to use your review as a reference and see how the cartridge differs in presentation from your findings. I think both yourself & Marco gave a very accurate description of how the cartridge behaves so don't be too spooked if you see some of your comments being used for a future review I've got planned. I honestly think you'll be a happy man if you try one. There is a slightly cheaper wood (I think it's 35 Euros) if you don't want to spend as much as the 41 Euros that this cost.

It is supplied with 2mm bolts if it is like the one for my AT95.

TBH the bolts which came with this headhsell where too small anyway so I had to improvise, hence the 3mm bolts and headshell mod.

:lol:sorry chaps just been eating another massive Christmas dinner and just caught up with this post. Hope you both having nice Christmas.

Yes you were correct Brian mine is the old boron cantilever stylus.

Andy I think I agree with you the $400 ruby cantilever does push the upgrade into questionably expensive territory where there are other options! However the $200 sapphire cantilever version is still in my opinion very good value. I would question the importance of the cantilever myself as I really think the critical part is the micro ridge stylus which is stunning.

I have read a report by a cartridge designer who compared all these types of cantilever materials and although they measured slight difference, audibly they were not the key aspect to the stylus SQ.

Could be these exotic materials give manufacturers an excuse to bump up the price?

Wakefield Turntables
27-12-2016, 20:14
Well remembered Brian.

I agree with you Jim looks like they are trying to use exotic materials to ramp up the prices, and yep, I think the diamond is the special factor here, for me this was proven beyond doubt when I had the diamond changed on the DECCA maroon I have. It really was one of those night and day experiences.

My only cartridge change in 2017 will be to have a new diamond fitted to my Decca. The original conical diamond does not always track every record perfectly although it does sound wonderful.

The micro ridge diamond shape on the Jico SAS WILL track anything and dig out information in the groove only the very best cartridges can reveal. It never sounds edgy and is far easier to set up compared to the line contact in the 2M black!

Having read all 57 pages of this thread I've come very late to this party. It's still going though right ;-).
I've been in the vinyl doldrums for some time now so I thought maybe trying something different on the cartridge front might just inject some life back into it, so I managed to find an M55e on Ebay with a stock Shure stylus last week and it arrived Saturday morning so I set about fitting it to my Well Tempered Versalex. This is what it looks like:
19222

I've been grinning at it ever since. What a find! It's put the fun back into vinyl replay for me and the most shocking part of this is that I'm in absolutely no rush to re-fit my Dynavector DV20X2L!! It feels a little bit like selling off the family saloon and buying a Caterham 7. The DV was more refined, certainly, but this is just digging out more music, more groove, what sounds like an extra octave of bass, but it doesn't get overblown. This is how I remember vinyl sounding a long time ago - So it's not my ears afterall.

Thanks to everyone who flagged this up as a giant killer - You're absolutely right. I'm sure at some point I'll feel the need to get a SAS stylus to go with it, but for the time being I'm busy digging out records I've not played in years. That's what it's all about!

REALLY happy!

Was I the only individual that did the wooden headshell mod?

Having read all 57 pages of this thread I've come very late to this party. It's still going though right ;-).
I've been in the vinyl doldrums for some time now so I thought maybe trying something different on the cartridge front might just inject some life back into it, so I managed to find an M55e on Ebay with a stock Shure stylus last week and it arrived Saturday morning so I set about fitting it to my Well Tempered Versalex. This is what it looks like:

I've been grinning at it ever since. What a find! It's put the fun back into vinyl replay for me and the most shocking part of this is that I'm in absolutely no rush to re-fit my Dynavector DV20X2L!! Nice one Richard especially as you got an M55 with a stock Shure stylus. I feel this really does deliver a good dose of vinyl magic and sounds just right. The JICO SAS is a different beast altogether.;)

Similar to me then. I went as far as selling my mc, so pleased was i with the stock m55 and stock stylus. Getting hardcto find surprisingly as at their peak shure made 28 thousand carts a week. Many must have been m55's

I'm totally sold on Shures , both the m55 and m75. They do everything right to my ears and the knowledge that all I need to do is replace the stylus as and when its needed is sweet indeed. I don't think I'll be hankering after anything else. I'll be selling my fancy MC here soon ;)

I think I'm in agreement there. I can't see me holding onto my DV20X2L for much longer. I'm enjoying vinyl in a way that I haven't done for a long time with this Shure. The Jico stylus sounds interesting, but I'm in no mood to upset the current balance as it's just so musical.

One other thing I have noticed. There were certain records that I've bought in the last couple of years that I had believed were poor pressings, sounding dull and lifeless on my DV cart. I bought a cheap re-press of Dave Brubeck's Time Out from Rise last year and it sounded dreadful. Playing it on the Shure though is a different matter. Perfectly enjoyable. It's almost as if the Shure stylus is ploughing a different part of the groove that just happens to contain a bit more music. Very odd.

The Shure has legendary tracking ability.
