Not so keen on the real ales, guess you have to grow up with them.

Marco
27-09-2017, 09:39
Not really, I only properly discovered and enjoyed drinking them when I moved down to Wales, particularly being so near to the English borders of Cheshire and Shropshire, where there's lots of locally produced real ales, and then going to some of the pubs there.

It's an entirely different scene to the one I was used to in Glasgow! :)

Was for me, never got a taste for them, ended up drinking lager when I lived int Leeds.

Not sure that the real ale scene would've been as vibrant in Leeds, as that round here, and as such allowed access to such a variety of high-quality ales, such as found in Wales and throughout Shropshire and Cheshire, particularly in the country pubs we usually frequent.

I'm probably a bit too 'fussy' (some might say discerning) for my own good, because as I don't drink to get pissed, and am certainly not a heavy drinker, the small amount I do take *has* to be GOOD. Quality always comes before quantity! :)

So for me, that rules out 90% of the pish here posing as, and sold as 'lager', even a lot of the foreign stuff, as it's so often a pale imitation of the same beer you get in the country of its origin, so I prefer drinking something that I know is genuine, and also produced locally, often only a few miles from the pub where I'm drinking it, which is why some *good* real ales hit the spot nicely

Ha - perhaps, but I'm talking about in the city of Leeds itself, not so much out in the sticks or in small towns in Yorkshire. Do the pubs there sell lots of different varieties of real ales? I wouldn't know because I've never stayed in Leeds for any amount of time :)

For me though, bottles aren't the same. To enjoy real ale properly, it has to be drunk on draught. Do none of the pubs near you serve Deuchars IPA? That's a rather nice drop :)

Excellent! And I fully endorse its sentiments

I really don't know how people can even drink the pish that passes as lager, especially Carling, which I would turn down if it was free even!
When I'm in a good real ale pub with 10 types to choose from and some plonker comes to the bar and asks for "4 pints of Carling" I truly wince... It's like going to a good restaurant and asking if they have any McDonald's style chicken nuggets!

Oh and Marco, Leeds is a real ale heaven! Try "The Duck & Drake" if you're ever near Leeds bus station (about 3 mins walk from it).

I completely agree. Carling? FFS, the choice of football hooligans!

Cool, noted and I stand corrected. My perception of big cities is that, by and large, pubs serve commercially produced cack to completely undiscerning pissheads, and that's almost certainly not exclusive to Leeds. Wrexham (even though only a large town) is rife with it, which is why I almost never drink there!

The perfect pub for me, and those we most often use, is a quiet, quaint, privately owned country pub (often a husband and wife team), situated in beautiful surroundings, where (in the wintertime) I can sit at a table beside a roaring log fire, with no shitty muzak blaring away, drinking some quality real ale and eating some quality home-cooked pub grub.

Or in the summer, doing the same thing (minus the fire) outside in a well-kept beer garden, admiring the view. *That*, for me, is where it's at!

Yes, but the big difference is, even if you don't like the taste of real ale, it's (most often) a hand-crafted, carefully produced quality product, unlike something like Carling or Tennent's lager! ;)

A lot of it is aptly put in those Wychwood brewery ads "What's up lager boy? Scared you might taste something?" They start drinking concoction of wet chemicals (Ta Alan) at 16 and become used to it... I had a good mate (now lost to the the big C unfortunately. Probably all those chemicals!) who drank nowt but Carling and we all used to rip the piss out of him for it. One day he said he'd try a half of real ale... He didn't really like it but said it wasn't as bad as he remembered.. We kept giving him tries of our different real ales and after a month or so he once again bought a half... To cut a long story short he was soon converted to real ale and after a few months he bought a Carling to see what he'd liked about it... "that tastes like piss! Bloody awful! how the feck did I like that shite!" etc came from his mouth... he didn't finish the pint of Carling!

I enjoy a good lager as much as I dislike a crap one. Therefore, British so called 'lagers' don't find favour with me. The British just don't brew a decent mainstream lager.

As for 'real ale', well it's OK I guess, if you've got a few paint brushes to wash out! ;)

And that's the fact of the matter (or a decent any lager, IMO), whether you still enjoy drinking it or not. I'd say the same thing to folks who claimed to prefer the taste of supermarket ready-meals, compared with that of freshly made, home-cooked food! ;)

Dont mind some if well used and looked after. I usually take a continental one tho. Tuberg on draft used to be very good, but again it needs pouring regular like most gaseous beer, guinness included, although not gassed as such. Dublin they literally never stop pouring for more than 30 sec in big bars

Amen to that. In addition, our local (which keeps its real ales in kegs on a rack behind the bar - none of this pump-pulled stuff!) also has a mobile phone ban. If anyone's phone rings, they have to put £1 in a jar on the bar, which is given to charity when it's full.

Sounds like one of my locals. Me and the mrs drove past it many times thought it was a derelict building. Like going back in time in there. The pub became popular during the foot and mouth thing several years ago, as the potolers couldn't get to the mendip caves. There is a cave entrance in the car park , so well handy. They have branched out a bit more on food these days, the odd shep pie/chillie, but the main staple, is a cheese roll, or cheese and onion roll. local ( just up the road cheddar gorge) cheddar cheese, over half an inch thick slab, the onion even thicker. Nice with some local cider ( proper cider).

There are scatter cushions. In a pub.

I like dives myself. Tile floor, paint peeling off the walls, still the same cheap tables and chairs the place had when it opened in 1922 or whatever. Lock-ins until 3am every night. Used to be spoilt for choice round these parts but they have all closed down or been tarted up and spoiled.

Yup, cosy is important, and it's something that 'open plan' room ism't. Unfortunately, 'airy and spacious' seems to be the de rigueur look these days, and if not done properly, simply results in cold and uninviting.

I like 'snugs' in pubs, nice cosy, quiet little corners/areas you can sit in, enjoying your beer (with someone decent to talk to, perhaps even your wife, lol), away from where all the 'rowdies' [who just love the sound of their own voice] and cackling women congregate...

It's rather like booths in restaurants, which you used to see more of at one time, and which I also like, as they 'cocoon' you to some extent from the presence of the unwashed masses you unfortunately have to share the same space with! ;)

That is one handsome face, reminds me of Robert Shaw in "Jaws". You should really get the beard back - the current Captain Birdseye is totally unconvincing, so there could an opening :D

We played mainly original stuff, Manic Street Preachers/Terrorvision style and a few covers from Hendrix, The Who, Aerosmith and some more obscure songs too. I played in another band as well that was purely 60's/70's covers. That was great fun and our vocalist was the former Lib Dem MP Norman Baker. That band is still going but Norman and the drummer are the only original members.

No, that's where it lives Steve. Having almost 30kg on the bottom shelf makes the whole rack feel nice and secure. I don't have the meters switched on anyway, they can become a bit of a distraction & apparently the sound is more transparent with them off (although I can't tell the difference).

Great set-up, Royster - very similar to my own, although my room is a little bigger... No doubt it sounds fab, as look very well set up, with the positioning of those Tannoys spot on (for the room)!

Marco.

I've got scope to make the listening area bigger but it's just about right, the other end of the room is larger & allocated to tv viewing with 2 more reclining sofas. My 65" Sony telly broke down just as the lockdown kicked in so I haven't been able to get an engineer out yet (it's still under a 5 year warranty). Got a stop gap 40" tv in for now.

Well an ex and some other lady friends have liked the picture on Facebook which my current lady friend huffed & puffed about (& I know your position on Facebook Marco so no tirade please ;) . I find it invaluable for keeping in touch with family & friends, especially in the current situation, me & my cousin who lives in scotland wind each other up all day).

Lol - you misunderstand me. I've got nothing against the use of social media *in the right way*, such as you're doing. Like Grant says, it's a tool to be used and enjoyed, (much as you and I post on here), just as long as it doesn't turn into an addiction or obsession, and which ends up controlling your life:)

If you're happy with how they sound, I wouldn't touch your Tannoys. Generally, although I know yours are the ported type, they work best (display their key sonic strengths) in small-ish rooms, so in that respect small is better than big, which I'm sure is a problem your lady friends often have to deal with, when the opposite applies:lol:;)

I should have said thanks for the favourable comments about the system & my pic (not bad for 61?). Yes, I'm very satisfied with it's performance (as are the ladies with mine ;) ).

The only pic of me i can find where i’m not in a car or on a bike with a crash hat on.

https://i.imgur.com/29ThXIn.jpg

Pic was taken in Adenau town where we’d go for a mid morning breakfast of bratwurst hotdogs before heading to the ring for a few laps, then back to the camp site for beers and a bbq, then on to either the Blaue Ecke in Adenau or the world famous restaurant of the petrol head the Pistenklause in Nurburg for more beer and food.

http://www.speedhunters.com/2008/08/gallery_gt_gt_pistenklause_at_the_nurburgring/

Their steak on a stone is the best i’ve had anywhere ever, just fabulous, and the atmosphere is wonderful as everyone is there for the same reason and has the same mindset.
If one has even the slightest trace of petrol running through their veins, then i can recommend a week there without question.
We were planning on going back later this year on the bikes, but that isn’t going to happen now.

Edit..
found one more, this time at Calais on the way back.
I’m wearing the hat as a bet from an american mate..

Eleven years after the first pic I posted I look a complete wreck!

Mind you it was this Saturday and I had just face planted the tarmac after hitting a pothole downhill at 25mph. Broke 4 top front teeth and 5 hours later after my R arm that had been used a brake had been cleaned and Maxofacial had cut and shaped what was left of my top lip and nose and inserted 30 stitches inside and out.

Cycling is good for you......honest. It has been a regular part of my life for nearly 40 years, more so since i retired last year. "Dad isn't it time you called it a day"......"err I think you know the answer to that kids". Thankfully I have a very high pain threshold. When I had a Vasectomy at 32 I asked them when they cut the first tube...."should I be feeling this?"...Mad scurrying around then took place to pump some more local into me:D:lol:

Heard of Room at the Top but never frequented it. Romford had Hollywoods & Secrets and in the late 90s I used to go to Bas Vegas with JJs & Liquid & Envy.

Me and a couple of mates fancied a couple of night caps last time we went for a curry in Romford, closest 'pub' was The Goose near Romford station, looked like a real dive and the doormen wouldn't let us in anyway..
