View Full Version : tv hifi spotting
after much boredom-drinking I have had the bright idea of a hifi spotting thread....
so far I have seen a pioneer 1250 receiver in a virgin ad with that guy off
breaking bad....who my wife fancies...grrr
I also spotted a nad av receiver in the latest episode of mimic....just behind the bird off shane meadows "this is england".
oh..a few weeks back i also spied a fisher valve based receiver....a pattern here methinks!!..in a old episode of columbo, can't recall the plot mind.
c'mom people, pass on your spots......perhaps the site owner could offer a prize every week for the best spot!!!!

Saw what looked like a Sansui receiver on a Galaxy chocolate ad, James Nesbit's character in "Murphy's law" owns a pair of Royd Edens... Can't think of anything else recent.
There's an e-cig ad where a group of hipsters start there own club in a derelict building or something, always makes me laugh as it shows the fella setting up a belt drive TT then in the next shot he's scratching on it

In the movie Clockwork Orange, there is the famous Transcriptors supplied by John Michell. The film starred Malcolm McDowell and was shot in Elstree. In the film Gangster Number One. i supplied on hire, a Garrard 401 SME 3009 mk1 in a Loricraft plinth, TWO Revox A77s one high speed, one low a 33, FM2 and a 303 rounded off with a pair of Tannoy Lancasters. The film starred Malcolm McDowell and was shot in Elstree, do you see a pattern emerging
Found this from the excellent link James posted earlier -

There was a drama-documentary about Jacqueline du Pré (made for TV) which depicted the use of a Thorens 125/SME deck with Quad 33/FM3 electronics.
Quad ESL 57s and Ferrograph (Wright & Weaire) tape decks appear in the Powell and Pressberger film "Peeping Tom".

In one episode of Elementary Holmes is seen in front of MacIntosh equipment in his brownstone. :stalks:
House also had a turntable in his office at the hospital. Couldn't tell what it was though...
Matt Damon's girlfriend in The Departed listened to evidence of his discretions on a cd playing on a full McIntosh system through a pair of Sennheisers... ;)
I remember my mum telling me that Insp Morse had a nice rig. I can't claim that one though as I've never watched an episode... :eyebrows:
Will Smith in 'I Am Legend' has B&O speakers
I seem to remember a Morse episode where the murder victim was a Teifenbrun-type character who had designed a revolutionary (sorry) turntable of which Morse had an example. Sources say (I've too much time on my hands today) the the system he had was Roksan Xerxes/Naim Nait, speakers unknown.
Then there was that pair of Martin Logans that appeared in most episodes of Friends. Anyone who had a teenage daughter in the late '90s/early '00s will remember them.....

Yep the fictional Audio company was Richards Audio Research The episode is 'The Dead Of Jericho'
In the film "Diva", the hero uses an Nagra 4-2 to make a surreptious recording of an opera singer. Cassette copies of this recording are made on Nakamichi tape and are played back on Revox equipment (which includes the linear-tracking TT) as well as a Sony Walkman. I think a Nakamichi 700 cassette player makes an appearence as well. (Talk about product placement!)
In the film "The Good Sheppard", the CIA use a Nagra III and associated gear to analyse the source of a conversation. And of course in the film "The Conversation", the wire-tapper uses some Uher tape machines and a Nagra SN machine.
A Nagra 4-2 also appears at the end of the film "The Year of Living Dangerously".

There a total of three 'Xerxes' in that Episode. Morse House, Anne Stavely House & ofc the Alan Richards {Which it turns out is actually Tony} lecture & office..
If you watch the bit where Alan Richards {Tony} holds the lecture as well as in his office rig there is a two box half width Naim amp with the 'Xerxes' 'XPS-1' PSU sat on top.. The two box could be a '32'/'110'. But what is being used to drive the Sennheiser 'HD400/410'? headsets you also see?
The 'Nait'/'Xerxes' is in Anne Stavely house.
As a result of this excellent info it would seem I will be watching my first episode of Morse later, thanks chaps ;)

Every time a turntable appears on screen when we're watching TV, Mrs. B rewinds, pauses the picture and waits for me to annouce what it is before continuing. She knows me too well...
As to the best starring role for a turntable, it has to be the Columbo episode "The Bye Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case", where an ADC Accutrac 4000 has a starring role as the method used by the murderer to cover up his dastardly deed and try to throw Columbo off the scent!

In the film "The mechanic" Jason Statham's character has a Pro-Ject turntable & Jolida valve amp... Which blows the house up when it reaches the end of the record :eyebrows:
Dawn of the Dead (the original not the remake) they have a Beocentre in the room over the shopping mall with linear tracking TT but I don't know which model it is. Odd choice though when they have a whole hi-fi store to loot for kit.
You can often see a Cambridge separates pile in Eastenders, but have never seen any speakers....maybe they don't have any as they can't ever have time to listen to music as they are all too busy shouting and scheming at each other and shouting "I will get eet sorted....alright!"
I saw a great system on Escape to The Country which occupied a whole room. The speakers were MBL and looked something like these.

It's interesting that people in soaps, even youngsters, are never shown listening to music or watching TV.
One exception I can recall was Coronation St in the 1980s when after having a disastrous series of child 'actresses' playing the young Tracey Barlow they abandoned the idea entirely. To keep the character alive if anyone asked about her Deidre would reply: 'Tracey's in her bedroom playing her turps'. That went on for some years...

Back on topic, Mr Big from Sex and the City (Mrs. B watched it, not me.................honest.) had a B&O Beosound 9000 and a Rega Planar 3 turntable. Not sure how it sounded as the Beosound only has a line level aux input and there was no evidence of a phono preamp that I could see.

Ok a bit non specific in places but.... there was a men's aftershave ad awhile back with a Gyrodec and Mcintosh electronics.
Life insurance ad with a Linn CD player and integrated amp (I think) sitting on a kitchen counter to the right side.
Current car ad and a lady has a nice system with a reel to reel.
Galaxy ad with old large 70s reciever
Jumper had complete Meridian system.
Emerdale had a Denon DM30.
Some computer games device (X Box maybe) ad has old audio gear in the back ground.
Ruark Audio (maybe Tivoli) in Emerdale. Cambridge Audio system in Emerdale.
9 and a half weeks Nakamichi audio
Martin Logans in Friends
Suits one of the lawyers has vinyl set up in office, maybe a Project or Music Hall turntable.
Best one by far imho was an ET 2 tonearm, VPI turntable in Indecent Proposal
House I think had a Sota turntable.

My shop in Radlett was just a couple of miles from the BBC studios in Borehamwood and they often came to me to borrow equipment for various programmes. Usually, it was 'vintage' gear they wanted, working or not, just so long as it looked interesting. They paid good money but often only shown for a few seconds.

this was just before I joined this forum and had no idea there was a thriving market for this era of kit. mine had all the dial bulbs out but still worked flawlessly.....I even reset the idle current to 10mv as per a bods advice,
would buy it back now for treble that I got for it.......SOB

'In 2005 Craig Charles joined the principal cast of Coronation Street, the world's longest-running TV soap opera, playing philandering taxicab driver, Lloyd Mullaney. Charles introduced aspects of the character himself, making Lloyd a Northern Soul DJ and record collector, and funk music enthusiast. He chooses funk and soul music which plays in the background during scenes, and posters for The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club and Red Dwarf have also appeared in the background.'
Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' was playing in the background the other night.
I have a VHS tape (yes, I still watch them, got loads of never-to-be-repeated progs on them) with an interview/chat between the wonderful late-lamented Douglas Adams and the irritatingly smug Richard Dawkins in Adams' London house. We don't get to see the main system but lurking in the background are a pair of big B+Ws, the equivalent today would be 802 Diamonds. Adams was apparently a big hi-fi nut. Given his wealth I wish I'd been his local dealer

There was an article in one of the mags at the time about Richard Adams's system.
From my shaky memory, it might have been Hi Fi Choice.
The system might have contained Audio Research components.
The speakers were panels, possibly Martin Logans. Maybe.
At the time it was a pretty valid stab at best of the best, as I recall.

Just watching the TV series Fargo,
Billy Bob Thornton takes an LP and puts it on a B&O 4004 lateral tracker (could have been 4002) , the rest of the kit is a Beocord 8000 , amp is either the Beo 2400 or 1900 and speakers, by the size, looked like the B&O S25s.

I'd say occasionally they have some nice stuff. A lot of the time it is multi room crap and even more often they have nothing at all to play music on even though they are obviously loaded. What's that all about? Best one for that was a couple who ran a mail order record business. They converted an old pumping station into a house, the living room was about half an acre (not an exaggeration) and all they had to play music on was a crappy Sony midi system.
WTF?

Record is "un homme, une femme" appropriate 60s lame soundtrack music from Francis Lai.
More interesting are the two Thorens 124, not lenco, especially the first one with a fixed tonearm mount, quite unusual because it is normally a removable board.
What's the movie ?

That's because most darts players in the seventies looked like that. There are some folk these days grumbling about having glamorous girls working at those tournaments. I know what I'd rather be looking at.
Was watching the darts the other day and most of them still do look like that. No booze or fags on the go during the match anymore though, which is a shame.

Does anyone remember that "Not The Nine o'clock News" sketch with the beer drinking contest, where the competitors threw a few darts in between necking pints? Pretty close to the truth really, but then darts (and snooker) were more entertaining in those days.
I remember in the darts when they would occasionally cut to a shot of the crowd and you could see the heavy smoke haze hanging over them. And the tables they were sat at would be literally overflowing with empty pint pots with more stacked up on the floor from where they'd had to clear some space to put another ash tray down. People knew how to enjoy themselves back then.

Finally I have the opportunity to contribute to the best thread on AOS!
Watched the superb documentary on the Williams F1 team the other night (Saturday?). "Williams: Formula 1 In The Blood".
Frank Dernie, a former F1 engineer, has some pretty bank account emptying kit on show.
Not sure exactly what the speakers are, Avantgarde perhaps?? CD player looks swiss or even a bit REGA-ish . . .
They were showing sneaky peaks of the kit out of focus during the interview, thought the speakers were just some wall art possibly but then he played some music on them.
Been scrolling through iPlayer trying to find the clip on and off for 2 days!
I'm pleased with my commitment here.

Watched a few more episodes of this hoping to see some hi-fi but it was just the usual 'Standard Oil' signs and other rusty cack.

Yes, it does get a bit repetitive with the old ceramic signs they cream their pants over and then they pay fortunes for old motorbike frames?

I know! I don't see how they make any money - like with 'Storage Wars' you never see them actually flogging the tat they've paid a fortune for but I suppose they get paid by the TV show producers too.
& I'm not sure where I stand on Danielle, sometimes she looks hot but other times she looks minging..
I have also observed that.

Exactly, I wonder how much they get for an episode. Fast n loud get 50 grand an episode.
Anyone seen five minutes of finding Bigfoot, lots of people running around in the woods in the dark with torches and all you see are torches and people watch that crap. Five minutes is enough to know they never see anything.
But they get paid to do it.
I've seen 'Finding Bigfoot' - false advertising since they never locate the bastard thing. Just people running about saying 'Did you hear that? Did you hear that?'. They never find any hi-fi kit either.

Bit like 'The Curse of Oak Island'. Just a bunch of blokes tramping about in mud and hinting at things that never happen. It's rubbish!!

No, Curse of Oak Island is good in a shaggy dog story sort of way. Plus they have found some interesting stuff, especially last week.
You chaps have too much time on your hands. :)
Flying turntables - start of ‘and now, from Norwich, it’s the quiz of the week..

And the obvious question is "what make and model of turntable is this?"
There was a programme on TV last night, about EMI covering the period from the late 50s up to the present day. In the programme there were the occasional shots of radio DJs in their broadcast studios using Gates turntables with Gray tonearms, as well as a fleeting shot of a Studer-Revox C221 broadcast CD player.
And the obvious question is "what make and model of turntable is this?"

Well done! I recognised the arm as being a Technics, but that was as far as it went.

I don't recall anyone ever winning a hifi separate on the show, some music centres maybe but this would be a bit 'high end' for them.

In Jason Statham's 2016 film The Mechanic Resurrection one of the opening scenes in Thailand is Jason using an Oracle Delphi MK VI we supplied that deck for the shoot.

Ah - a Nagra III. A Nagra III also appears in the film 'The Good Shepherd'. :)
That American Pickers with the Bose 901s was on again, had forgotten what he gave for them.

Roy, you are the king of TV hifi spotters!
A bit like a train spotter, but even better as this hobby is indoors so no need for the woolly hat and anorak. And the proximity of the kitchen means you don't need the flask either :D

Thanks Steve, it's certainly something I've always aspired to.
What's the kit set up behind him in this Vodaphone ad, right near the end at 0.50?

I bet you didn't see the Beolab 90's on 'Billions' a few weeks ago - 57 grand a pair, so they won't be appearing on telly very often. Sorry no pics - not got the hang of that yet.

Bit too dark and out of focus to tell?

Don't know if it's been mentioned already, but in HBO's Vinyl they definitely show a lot of gear.
Beogram 3000 turntable, Teac & Akai R2R decks (and Nakamichi cassette decks), Empire cartridges, Technics headshells etc.
Not quite HiFi on BBC4, I can go for that: the smooth world of yacht rock. (and get a better turntable to play that!)
