I think they have the QUAD amps with the Tannoys as that would make the most sense.

Barry

I checked the studio's equipment list :)

It is most likely a misprint. Quad, to my knowledge, never made a "540F" amplifier. They did make a dual channel 140W amplifier, with provision for a floating front end input, the 520f. I have one and cannot see anything like it in the video.

Quad also made '240' amplifier for professional use. It only had a small production run of 180 units and is now extremely rare.

I can’t find one either when doing a search .
I did see very similar audio note power amps once ....

I've seen 'Finding Bigfoot' - false advertising since they never locate the bastard thing. Just people running about saying 'Did you hear that? Did you hear that?'. They never find any hi-fi kit either.
Nice work if you can get it. Probably get about 50k an episode and its total bullshit like most of these reality programs.

American Pickers, referred to as an ‘oversized turntable’

I had to quit watching those American Pickers, they don’t know their arse from a hole in the ground. And when they do see something they know, they pay above top price, so there is no way they could make a profit. I recall an episode where they bought a few old guitars and amps. Paid way too much, for no good reason. Then sold it all to some so called famous musician for $50 more than they paid. That wouldn’t even cover the gas they spent getting it. Their knowledge of stereo is less than zero, for someone in their line of work, you’d think they’d brush up on that sort of thing? But it’s all too fake, no one could possibly make a living doing what they do, you can only sell so many rusted oil cans.

Saw one where they'd bought a model train for $8000 & it sold at auction for $3000. In one I saw tonight they paid $85,000 for 3 old motorbikes, Mike said one was very rare but half the motor was missing!

Thanks Barry, wasn't sure about the turntable. It was in George Clarke's programme tonight, they were demonstrating that open plan living was nothing new with this old Pathe news film.

I saw the one with the model train. I happen to know a little about model trains and I knew they were screwing up. I didn’t see the $85K for motorbikes?! Seriously, how much profit do they expect to make? They want to be big time bike collectors, but they know nothing! It takes years of hanging around bike rallies and swap meets, etc to learn what things are worth. I saw them pay $3500 for a beat up gas tank! The guy only asked $3000, but he insisted on paying more, who does that? I bet if you tried to go to their store, you’d find it doesn’t really exist.

Must admit I have often thought it was bollocks. These old blokes with garages full of tat must be rubbing their hands when they see them pull up.

Judging by the strobe markings you can just about see by his hand, I’d say it’s actually a Garrard 301 with the TPA10 arm.

The bike they paid most for (and I forget the split, think this one was $55k of the $85k?) was a 4 cylinder Ace, quite a rare bike apparently BUT the reason the bloke who had it hadn't restored it was that he couldn't get the parts (most of the motor & transmission were missing). Surely toot & ploot would have the same problem?

I initially thought that, but I'm not so sure if they are strobe markings. Also the rear edge of the TT is square, unlike that of the 301, and any arm used with a 301 would be mounted outboard of the deck.

I mentioned the Collaro 2010/Garrard TPA10 combination, as that was what the father of a school chum of mine used (actually it might have been a TPA12A arm, with a Leak Stereo 20 amp and Wharefedale SFB3 speakers). And very good it sounded to my 16 year old ears!

My second TT was a Collaro 2010 (a "poor mans' 301") with an SME 3009 arm.

As I was saying, they are wannabe bike collectors, but just don’t have the background. In the real world you don’t get to make too many mistakes like that.

At least on Pawn Stars, they don’t know anything either, but they have experts they call on and they rarely loose money.

1974 Gene Hackman movie, The Conversation.
He plays an investigator trailing a couple, recording what they say when they meet with a team of tech guys operating from the back of a bogus van using directional distance mics.
At night he plays sax and in one early scene he's in his appartment after a tough day, sitting on a stool playing along to a jazz record on his pretty impressive hifi.
I say that without knowing what it is, but it looks good and sounds even better. Early Tannoys maybe ??

I can't remember who it was for, but there was an advert on TV the other night showing a Thorens TD150 Mk2 playing a record. So what, I hear you cry? Well, the outer platter was completely missing - the record was sitting on the subplatter.

WHY?? This sort of thing really bugs me and, yes, yes, I know I should get out more...

Connoisseur turntables had a 50/50 chance of spinning in the wrong direction - that is why the on/off switch lever had a rubber tip that would push the platter to turn clockwise. Simple but effective.

I was going to watch that and forgot.

The speakers are there, one is stuffed between the hifi cabinet and the doorway, and the other is right on the other side. Both just sat on the floor ofc as was the practice at the time.

You never get a close look at it but my guess is it's entry-level Hitachi or JVC kit from about 1979/80.

You probably aren't missing much as they are all American comedy shows, and I know you're a bit closed-off in that department :D Bit like me not liking Rammstein, having never heard them :ner: What are Rammstein? Are they German? I don't like German music, all that funny shorts and thigh slapping puts me off :(

Marco
11-05-2021, 07:12
Haha - 'closed off' is probably true, simply because since 'Cheers', I haven't found one I've considered as remotely funny.

However, I have rather specific tastes with comedy, and so what makes me laugh [generally outré/off-the-wall material, think League of Gentlemen, Little Britain or Fonejacker, as a rough guide, or most things Scottish], which is almost always the opposite of what American's laugh at, or those (perhaps such as your good self) who are 'tuned into' that type of humour:)

That said, I'm always open to being introduced to something new, in terms of comedy (American or otherwise), which is purported to be funny. In general though, sitcoms don't do it for me, although I've no idea whether those you've mentioned above are such or not.

Which 'origin story' do you go for?

I like the one which says they needed a 'typical speaker' to try out a mix on, and so sent the tea-boy down to Edgeware Road with a couple of hundred quid. The tea boy liked the look of the white drivers on the NS10M so bought them.

Me too, I recently saw the one where the boy went off with the turtle, it really brought back memories but I had completely forgotten about it until I saw it again. I did remember the one where the farmers smash up the Chippendale dresser, and the man who feeds his baby with bee stuff.

I watched That's Life every week with my mum, was that a Sunday too? And the Professionals (a Saturday I think).

The scariest TV memory I have of that time (I would have been about 8) was the Hammer House of Horror episode called the House that Bled to Death where a pipe sprayed blood all over a children's birthday party or something.

Funnily enough I watched all that but I wasn't allowed to watch The Sweeney because of the violence.

Noting:

Yes, that’s the one Lawrence. The “pub” where the fire was simulated had long since stopped being a pub, and it was the upstairs of the Body Shop. I remember it was quite a talking point at the time as all of the shops in the area of filming had Christmas decorations put up, much to the bemusement of everyone including the local media!
