Bought Elvis Costellos' First ten years on CD, as a result just bought three vinyls :-
My Aim is True
This years Model
Armed Forces
Still waiting for My Aim is True, but the other two are in great condition, also bought After the Goldrush and Harvest. The copy of Harvest looks absolutely mint but plays a bit crackly? will need to clean it before trying again.

Hawkwind 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' (De-Luxe Box set) already arrived..
I'd be interested to know how this sounds as it one of the early Hawkwind albums that I don't have on vinyl.
If it is a good one then I'd love to know what label it is on and which retailer you sourced it from if possible please? :)

Tapestry 180g reissue - surprisingly excellent SQ as is often the case with this 'unofficial' label. A nicely replicated gatefold sleeve.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TWycPQSTL._SY355_.jpg
These Sundazed Mono reissues cut by Kevin Gray and pressed at QRP are superb. Also have Mellow Yellow and Hurdy Gurdy Man.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5119Ho4HNtL._SX355_.jpg
Excellent pressing from Optimal but in house mastering from unstated source. Sounds a bit recessed but quite vivid sounding in parts (don't have an original to compare). Cut at lower level than ideal with wider than necessary deadwax.

Trouble is too much hassle with ebay overgrading on used vinyl these days. Especially with Topographic having lots of quiet bits and the optimistic asking prices. I'm sure this Optimal/Rhino is better than the Friday Music version judging from comments elsewhere. I also got it for only £13 Amazon pre-order. :) However I was expecting a Chris Bellman cut like the Rhino Close To the Edge. :(

To be honest Paul i think ive got myself into control with my obsessions, it no longer bothers me about battered packets or crackles on used records, i am totally & utterly unhappy with new releases un im wasting no more money on em'.. They are history, im gradually replacing them with used vinyl..
However i recieved a used copy of Sabbaths 'Bloody Sabbath' this morning it was scruffy & crackled like mad, ive been down & had it cleaned proffesionally twice over, virtually dead silent..

10-07-2013, 13:41
Sometimes records clean up nicely and frankly I don't play used vinyl until it's been through my Okki Nokki, but truth is recently (last 2/3 years) more records are 'not as described'. At one time you would get 90% of vinyl in top condition with no more than slight cover imperfections as long as you avoided VG and below. I have quite a number of reissues that are better than originals. Usually have to also get the original just to prove it. That Rhino Close To The Edge mastered by CB is up there so it perplexes me why Grundman mastering wasn't used for Topographic Oceans. Most EU Rhino titles have been mastered by Kevin Gray or Chris Bellman up till now.

I don't like all that Folk stuuf, does'nt do anything for me...
A late Re-Issue of Locomotive 'We Are Eerything You See' on Zap! Records, it was a chance but sounds good, i could never afford an original 1st issue these days on Parlophone.
Ben 's/t' i couldnt resist this as i could never afford an original Swirley these days, ive had this issue before & sounds just as good to me, sleeve construction/finish is very good..
Very lucky scoring a NM Coley 'Goodbye Brains' on private pressing

A1/B1 pressing in great condition after a thorough clean. Not cheap.
BTW the MOV Brutal Youth sounds little different from CD (apparently it's a 16/44.1 master) and No Frontiers has gone back due to a converging groove causing stylus to stick.
The Nick Drake Five Leaves Left box arrived earlier in week and was pressed with misprinted labels possibly due to a late recut and rushed repress and repackaging.

This arrived today at long last. The album's brilliant, I've had it on CD for a while.
It's a decent pressing by the sound of it so far, nice weighty slab of the black stuff too.

Nice!
Best of all though, it's a great album!
Indeed, Chris. I've already got it on a 70s re-issue, but then spied this beauty sitting in amongst the usual Max Bygraves, Perry Como pap in a small charity shop in Shrewsbury, so I snaffled it up, pronto... I was nearly going to haggle over the price, but then thought that would be too cheeky (even for me)!! :D

Quite right, it's for charity after all! I usually make an extra donation when I feel I've got a good deal.
I have that on SACD, Marco. It's a superb album. Wish I had cleaned up more of the Stones' SACDs when they came out.
Cheers, chaps. Check out the classical records I purloined, Martin, in the classical section and let me know if any stand out :)

Edit: Just noticed for a 1st issue {Stereo} inner sleeve is wrong, should have a light blue band all around, the mono has red band all around to are colour co ordinate with the label colour.. Red label {Mono}, Blue label {Stereo}

Michael Fremer claims it is better than the original?
"As for the sound, well I get into arguments all to often with people who insist originals are always better. If after comparing this reissue to the original they still think so, they are hopelessly prejudiced. This reissue easily beats the original I have in every category."

The thing that has put me off purchasing this is the fact a couple of my favourite tracks (Genie, Unforgivable Thing) are missing and some real stinkers (in my opinion!) like Angelia and Drilling Holes made it. I don't understand those choices. Shame they didn't make it a triple.

Those are two titles for which I went through several used copies before finding a decent one (a few years ago). In any case never been a decent reissue of either since the now ultra expensive Mo-Fi AHM which I regrettably failed to purchase at the time. The Zombies mono sounds good in spite of a 24 bit file source and reproduces a thick card and flipback sleeve with lined inner. However getting more one off pressing faults after a pretty good run with new vinyl - replacement for Suzanne Vega ordered. Got a replacement Caravan IICDIA0AIDIAOY due to slight warp and replacement was horribly crackly and covered with scratches! This would have equaled original if they hadn't used too low a cutting level.
How is this one, Paul? I was looking at it in the weekend.
The Suzanne Vega sounds great and is back to the musical standard of the early albums. Have had to get a replacement due to an audible pressing mark.

Andre.
It's always been the same - luck of the draw I suppose. At least I don't have to do several miles round trip to a record shop these days. Amazon will even collect returns if you want but that means being at home all day. I do wonder how much returned vinyl they have to deal with as I'm sure a lot of people don't listen to it and use the download card that comes with many titles. I even got to the stage with one title (in limited supply) where Diverse Vinyl politely suggested they weren't prepared to send a second replacement. For 'mainstream' titles I normally stick to Amazon for free returns drop off and there is a store locally that does it. Agree it is wasting a lot of time though.
Paul.

Good LP that Paul.. Sound good too.
Just been incredibly lucky to track down and buy (very reasonably) a factory sealed Sony USA (analogue) remastered (2010) version of Electric Ladyland on 180g double LP vinyl. Been hunting one down for ages but only coming across the MOV digital versions which seem to abound over here or one of the Polydor/Reprise re-releases. Looking forward to receiving this one which is reputedly one of the better sounding pressings.
My last vinyl purchase (charity shop, as per usual for vinyl - too poor for new vinyl or collectable vinyl unless it's christmas) I bought pretty much because of the MCA sleeve which features a DV505 arm playing the record.
But turned out to be a great 12": Garry Shider "Beautiful", some Bootsy Collins 80s electro funk.

Try the RTI pressed all analogue versions (QRP for the Mono). They are brighter (read more detailed) than ''original' Track or Polydor but the EL beats my 1973 Polydor pressing. In fact original 60's pressings are just too damn expensive in anything like acceptable condition. For mono ABAL I would recommend the Classic Records 200g version (with repro Track labels).

Those RTI Hendrix are nice pressings and will save you ££££s. Paid £20 for the first Polydor reissue of Electric Ladyland about 10 years ago but even that goes for several times as much now. Early Ummagumma pressings sound terrific BTW. A very underrated Floyd album! I avoid 80's reissues like the plague - upgraded any I had to 70's pressings years ago.
By all accounts the Sony Legacy Family authorised version (which is taken from the analogue tapes) is the best version of the newer 180g pressings. It is meant to stand head and shoulders above the MOV digital remaster. Not sure if the SL pressings are available in anything other than the Electric Ladyland LP though. The 1st edition pressings are insanely expensive now (£200 for a mint example isn't unheard of).

Diverse only have EL in stock but since listed assume the other titles are still in the catalogue. Give them a ring to find out. The genuine original EL pressing was fetching £200 years ago ( blue print inside cover/inverted matrix nos).
Hi Paul
Sorry not a single new LP will ever enter this house again.. I found the exact same LP (70's pressing, mint) 4 months ago...paid £8.99 from memory, so yes, they're about! Managed to find a 1st pressing of Led Zep 2 in mint condition for the same price a while back too :)

Aye you can drop on em, dropped on an original Floyd 'Relics' on starline records, in timewarp condition less than a tenner..
I've been rather pleased with the "new" new vinyl I've bought lately. Noteworthy have been:
James Blake - several items (Universal)
Diana Krall - Glad Rag Doll & Quiet Nights (Verve / Universal)
Les McCann & Eddie Harris- Swiss Movement (Atlantic / Rhino)
Lalo Schifrin - Bullitt soundtrack (Warner)
Jimmy Smith - The Cat (Verve / Back to Black)
Karajan / Philharmonia - Bizet L'Arlesienne and Carmen (Hi-Q Records)
Pink Floyd - DSOTM & The Wall (my first time with The Wall - EMI)
That is not to say that they are all perfectly silent - there's a couple I think would benefit from a spin on an Okki Nokki or similar - but sound on all has, basically, been excellent.
EDIT: Add Lady Gaga - Artpop and Daft Punk to that list...
Treated myself to a few new fuzzies:
Gonga - Black Sabbeth. Bought from Probe in Liverpool, as part of their Record Store Day stock. If you fancy a listen, and some more info, see here:
http://www.terrorizer.com/news/streams/gonga-team-portisheads-beth-gibbons-cover-black-sabbath/
The Gentrys - (self-titled). One for Andre, me thinks ;)
Them - Now and Then.
Gong - Angels Egg.
Marco.
P.S I also picked up a TON of classical stuff on vinyl (see the classical section for details).
RSD purchases..Opeth - Watershed..Mastadon - Live in Brixton..Anathema - Untouchable 12'' ep..Ramones 10'' pinkvinyl ep.. Motorhead - Aftershock pic disc..and one new release but not part of RSD Ian Anderson - Homo Erraticus..al for £140 mad I am..

Deep Purple "Made in Japan" mint 1st pressing. Brill.
When the Japaneses pressing first came out the quality was not has good as the German pressing the tonal balance was off, The Yanks pressing sounded slightly distorted and the UK was OK.
Deep Purple and Pink Floyd both had this problem on over seas pressings. But for the worse I ever heard on any pressings was a OMD LP I even wrote to them with no reply. When I bought it on CD is was far far better.
On my last tour of the SW I found a shop called "UPBEAT" run by Keith Shepard, e-mail Kbude@btinternet.com in Bude I bought a whole stack of vinyl and a good price all new.
PM me if you want tele phone number .

I wonder if it was the mix or the cutting tool, could not find any reference to what was used.
I had also a Swedish version it was not as good as the German but better than the USA version by a long way.
So I try to buy German pressing when possible so if you are going this month to the Munich High End try and pick a few up.
Follow Stu from Hi-fi Pig he sniff's out some good recordings at times.
Bought at my local record shop today in Wrexham (Moonlight Records):
The Concert for Bangladesh (box set) - George Harrison. The box is in very good nick, as indeed is the enclosed booklet. Records are mint. Well pleased with this! :)
AC/DC - Highway to Hell.
Robert Cray - Midnight Stroll.
Eric Clapton - Backless (original gatefold edition on RSO records).
Eric Clapton - Behind the Sun.

This got dumped through my door today.
Only listened to first 4 sides of the first recorded concert.
Initial feelings are that this pressing is slightly harsher and maybe a little compressed. Drum work and vocals are fantastically clear, Richie Blackmore's guitar work sounds superb. So far, so good. I'm loving it!
