Came across a half speed mastered copy of Boston's first album - it sounds rather nice, with finer fadeout detail and greater low end authority than the standard pressings.
The cover is a bit tatty, but for £3 I can't really complain.
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTE5OVgxNTk5/z/bbIAAOxyeglTaqRl/$_35.JPG
This is not a picture of the copy I now have, but it is the same version release.
I decided to do a quick comparison with my standard run copy, and from a tonality perspective my original copy is streets ahead of the Mastersound copy (there's a lot more high end response and life), so I did a bit of digging around and found this http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/cbs-mastersound-lps-crap.588/
Seems that CBS used the original production mastering notes, and didn't make appropriate EQ adjustments for the half speed cutting, which is a shame because the detailing is much better
Nice to find the Mastersound pressing nonetheless, and for the little I paid for it I think I've gained a little bit more knowledge - I'll pass on one next time I see it ;)

Picked this up at the weekend... An absolute favorite of mine and one I've been yearning for on vinyl for yonks.
KVARTETTEN SOM SPRANGDES - KATTIVALS / ON GUMP
Heavy organ psych, mean and meaty. Just great full on grooves. I found myself simply stunned with the sleeve too, a wonderful image. No fooking photoshop just a beautiful LP throughout.

What does "fuzzy" actually mean with regards to purchases?
I just bought a Garrard 401 with a Clearaudio 12" carbon fibre arm with on the fly VTA adjustment

There have been many definitions and explanations none of which enlightened me. Suffice to say yours should qualify if it was an impulse buy....then againmany would say not.....Hope that clears it up :)

The use of the word "fuzzy" for LP was explained long ago by André. It comes from the film by Stanley Kubrick: 'A Clockwork Orange'. It is one of the many nadsat words spoken by Alex, the main protagonist in the story. For a glossary of nadsat see: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:A_Clockwork_Orange#F

I tried looking for that clip - but couldn't find it. I suspect Alex's use of the phrase "fuzzy warbles" is a criticism of LPs as a music medium.

Discogs seller strikes again. I managed to locate a 3LP set id been looking for for over ten years. Graded as Media Mint/Cover Near Mint. Not perfect cover but pretty much the best im gonna get. I always check & ask for confirmation of stated condition cos these seller have a very bad habbit of listing stated gradings that are not true to the actual item. Guess what This twot has come back & said the cover is more like VG+. I naturally cancelled the item..I get sick to the back teeth of these people & do not ever intend using this facility again. The worse ones are the blatent liars that confirm a grading which is not true when you receive the item/s
Now im in the shit locating records. I must have wasted thousands on this place receiving items that do not match the description grading.

There's people that are not obsessive about condition & are happy with just something in VG or EX condition.in which case an off grading is no issue to them. However im totally the opposite.

Totally get that mate, gradings important.
For myself I never buy anything less than Near Mint.
A good chunk of my blues collection is fairly old and was not sold in huge numbers so I had to take those points into consideration if I wanted said records; even so most are in about as good as you will find. a 1950's record is not going to appear in mint condition(well not very often) but like you I used to be pretty ott about condition. I have mellowed a bit now :D
Yeah..sometimes you have to take whats out there, although now and again you can get a cracker.
Most recently for me, a film soundtrack I previously bought back in the 80's...
Had a "much used" copy on LP, more scratches than a hoor's backside, and recently I found a factory sealed unplayed copy on Discogs.
Shipped from America, wasn't ridiculously priced I guess because it wasn't a mainstream item?
Sometimes you can land lucky.

It hasn't arrived yet so I can't comment on the pressing. Having listened via Spotify I can say it's great work and should translate well. I hadn't heard any of his new album until I saw him live the other night. I was more than impressed with the new songs he played which made me buy this one.
The opening track sounds like some strange kind of fuzz bass and an effect but he showed how he got the sound using a one string washboard guitar and sewing thimble on his thumb. Really good stuff.
Soundtrack triple whammy here...
The last two are being repressed and available again, were going for silly money on EBay.
Some Joker selling one for £400. (Pun not intended)
The church pipe organ on this is sublime, massive massive soundstage with entrail rearranging bass.

I bought my first LP since the eighties over the weekend. It arrived today. Talk Talk, Spirit of Eden. I only bought it because it comes with a free DVD Audio version which I can now play. The LP, I won't be able to play. I must admit that even though the cover is not a classic, handling a brand new shrink wrapped album again after so long was an oddly pleasurable experience and certainly brought back happy memories.
Popped into Glasgow yesterday with Snapper and purloined the following (from Monorail music):

Blues in Orbit sounded mighty fine Marco, great album.
Could have saved a bit of dosh and downloaded the MP3 though. ;)
Lol - not quite the same thing!
You should treat yourself to the vinyl; it's arguably one of the finest jazz recordings ever produced (both sonically and musically speaking). Sounded fabby-dozy [to the max] on your Michy :)

great album is Split...not everyones cup of tea mind but some album ....
Split's always been a favourite Grant, I understand Cherry Red was recorded live in one take & the rawness comes across (including the stray cow bell near the start!). Will start hunting for the rest of their output on vinyl now, already got best & Solid.
Used to have them all but now only have one left...the mighty hogs. Great band in there day and more popular than many think even today. tony ts was a demon on the guitar

Interestingly, this album was one of the first on CD to start the "loudness wars".
First 3 albums on vinyl now, done with Oasis got a bit crap after that.
Also,
By way of contrast, a better copy of this.

OST - 180g Vinyl.....always one of my favorite films this and Maurice Jarre's soundtrack is stunning. The original music is performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Tony Bremner although Jarre by Christopher Palmer revised some of the tracks. This version(double vinyl) has an extra 20 minutes of music not included in the film.
Very nice music Grant, like that one a lot.
Jarre's Dr Zhivago is another favourite.
cant find zivago on nice vinyl at moment. its a great soundtrack and may have to go cd..but will wait for now. I love David Lean films

Paper Aeroplanes - Little Letters, and Joy.
Anyone else heard of this band?
Yes, really very good - a bunch of us here went to see Tina Dico in London a few years back and they were support. We all liked them and I've seen them a couple of times since. Not so keep on their latest album, gone a bit mainstream, but their early stuff is superb. Great live too

Bought the 4 Peter Gabriel 45 rpm LPs
Filled in the holes in my Mylene Farmer CD collection - her last three albums. Found them cheapish on Amazon, marketplace.
The remastered Le Roux CDs by Rock Candy - Last Safe Place and So Fired Up. Again cheapish on Amazon, the original Cd issues are awful and in my view unlistenable.
Radio Silence - Radio Silence and Seven, Seven, both You Tube finds.

I've loved this album since listening to my dad's old cassette recording of it as a kid. Genius songwriting on this. Must play dad my new copy, won't have been heard him since the hissy cassette copy bit the dust

Great choice Rich. The Kinks were seriously underated in the day, and especially Ray Davis. His works with the Crouch End choir is fabulous. Sure your dad would love it.

I remember hearing an interview with Paul McCartney a few years ago where he says he wished he was half the songwriter Ray Davis is. Not a bad accolade that.
Were my favourite band in the day, followed by the Stones and Amazingly Mungo Jerry, who I adored as well for some reason

What's your favourite Stones album Grant? I can never decide between Exile or Sticky myself.
The 2 you mention are very good, as was there debut album back in the day...64? but Flowers was my personal favourite... Singles wise they were all brill, and thats why I love the complimation albums... Brown Sugar probably being the daddy, with the chicken strut and all that lol.. I will never be that age again alas, but glad I was there at the time

180g Jimmy Page remasters Led Zep I and II.
Quite fancy the new Fernandez "when the levee breaks" album. not sure if the vinyl is worth the price I saw(£70 ish) but may be as its a set I think on 45.... maybe the sacd will be better value. Not sure when it comes out and doubt initially you'll be able to buy one without a preorder though. I dont like preorders.. Going to sell my rare Untiled soundtrack "almost famous" vinyl as its value has gone through roof to buy it I think.
This superb box set, on fuzzy-wuzz:

Nice one, Grant.
A flawed film with some great moments and a decent soundtrack. Favourite bit of dialogue ~
'Baron von Richter: David, we are not asking for anything. Europe is ours, we can walk into Britain whenever we like.
Sir David Kelly: If you think we're going to gamble on Herr Hitler's guarantees, you're making a grave mistake. All those years in England seems to have left you none the wiser. We're not easily frightened. Also we know how hard it is for an army to cross the Channel. The last little Corporal who tried came a cropper. So don't threaten or dictate to us until you're marching up Whitehall... and even then we won't listen.'
16981
'Whose this geezer Hitler?'
Overall i wouldnt say flawed... It had some errors at times, often forced on them by circustance and some by trying to show the spirit of equality against the Hun which existed to an extent in the country but not in the RAF.
The stars are there to sell the film and not for accuracy and certain parts have to be missed out or changed to hold an audiences attention but it is way better than most not least because of some nifty flying shots. My dad and cousin both liked it and both were in raf during war... My cousi! Flew in the bob in a hurricane as a serg pilot

A lot of the flying sequences are fabulous, Grant. I agree it more or less covers the salient points of the BOB, my hesitancy was to do with the structure and the dozy love subplot. Still, as a a kid I adored it.

I watched a lot of the air action being filmed for that movie as a youngster. They used RAF Northolt. The planes were not quite right though. The Heinkels and Messerschmitts were ex Spanish Air Force and sported Rolls Royce Merlin engines with odd looking air intakes and cowlings over them (as shown in that picture).
Not in the Americams league of balsing up History of course aka u571. Lol.. I will plagerise this as it sums up the farce well...
It's spring 1942, and an American submarine is making its way through the Atlantic. The target: a stricken German U-boat. Posing as a German supply crew, the American sailors plan to board the U-571 and steal its Enigma. Just a few problems here. First, the real submarine U-571 was never captured, though it was sunk by an Australian plane off Ireland in 1944. Second, by 1942, allied intelligence already had several Enigma machines. The first capture took place in February 1940, when the U-33 was taken by HMS Gleaner off the coast of Scotland. Three Enigma rotors were found, according to some sources, in a German sailor's trousers. Third, as eagle-eyed readers may already have noticed, the Enigma had actually been deciphered almost a year before this film is set – and seven months before the US entered the second world war.
Inspiration
The film seems to be based on the real story of Operation Primrose. On 8 May 1941, German submarine U-110 attacked an allied convoy that included the British ship HMS Bulldog. Damaged by depth charges, U-110 surfaced and was boarded by the Bulldog's crew, who collected all the papers they could find (no one spoke German, so they couldn't be selective), and an Enigma machine. Bletchley Park already had several Enigmas at this point. Bulldog's triumph was recovering the codebooks.
Casting
Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew McConaughey in U-571
Chuckle brothers ... Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew McConaughey in U-571
A generally B-list and exclusively American cast is headed up by Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton and Harvey Keitel, with the tokenish addition of TC Carson as an African-American cook. After the German crew is taken prisoner, Carson jeers at them: "It's your first time looking at a black man, ain't it? Get used to it!" It's absolutely true that Nazi Germany persecuted black people. Whereas the United States in 1942, of course, was a model of racial equality, and ... oh. Never mind. Obviously, at some point during pre-production, someone asked the question: "But how can we make this film even more ridiculous?" Fortunately, the answer was readily to hand: cast poodle rocker Jon Bon Jovi as the chief engineer

Had to do a lot of their fly scenes over Spain i think for the weather. Was on of the biggest airforces in world for a few months lol

If you like world music/jazz and also wish to add another amazing sounding 'hi-fi demo LP' to your collection, of superb soulful music, I URGE you to check this one out. RCA Victor Living Voice recordings are usually top-notch, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint!

Not my cuppa, but not bad audio wise, and guess it would sound great on a decent stereo.

Yeah, I know you likes yer Dukesy.... I just spied it, and it looked interesting, firstly because I also like DE, but also because it looked like a classic recording on a Phillips 'hi-fi' label. It's also on 140g vinyl and utterly mint - you know when the vinyl's so clean it acts like a veritable mirror? :)
Looks as if it's never been played....

Philips recordings are usually good, and often have value
Visited Macca yesterday, in Stoke, and popped into Rubber Soul Records: http://www.rubbersoulrecords.co.uk/
...which is a superb traditional record shop, run by passionate music enthusiast Rob Barrs. It's a veritable treasure trove for all physical music formats, crammed to the gunnels with vinyl and CDs. There must at least be 30,000 vinyl albums alone in there!
You could literally spend days going through the stock, but I only had an hour or so before I needed to get back home, but had enough time to buy the following LPs:

Hopefully he will, I've been buying records off him for almost 20 years. He used to have a stall in the indoor market. The shop is moving to bigger premises in Hanley soon. If you go there before the move then you will see why. The place is full to the rafters with stock, quite literally. Upstairs there are thousands of albums at a quid each, allow about 4 hours if you want to trawl through everything.
I'll do the upstairs next time, that is if Rob's not in his new premises by then :)

I was in Shrewsbury the other day doing some shopping, and on the way back to the car noticed that a new independent record shop has opened in Wyle Cop, called Left for Dead:
http://www.leftfordeadshop.co.uk/
Unfortunately, by then I didn't have a lot of time on my hands, so only had a quick flick through the stock. The good thing, for lovers of buying new vinyl, is that the shop only stocks new stuff, so no second-hand records, and this makes it different from other record stores in the area. It's a smallish shop but well-stocked with various genres of music, both on vinyl and CD :)
These days, with a collection of around 3000 LPs, unless there are specific albums I'm looking for, I tend to be selective and mostly buy new titles, as I both enjoy owning something that hasn't been played before, and more importantly, introducing myself to new music, especially as I enjoy taking punts on stuff (often obscurities) I haven't heard before.
The owner, Andy, also has a little system in the shop, with a Rega T/T at the helm, so you can listen to stuff before you buy. No time for that, however, on this occasion, so I played safe and got the new album from Yello:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/JGBzmD.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pnJGBzmDj)
Left for Dead comes highly recommended for those of you who live in or around Shropshire, or are visiting Shrewsbury. I'll definitely be back, and will spend more time there on my next visit!
